  1. Philosophically, I'm opposed to unions. This is a capitalist economy/society where value/cost of things is/should be determined by fair supply & demand. Labor is no different.

There's laws for companies not acting in a manner that's conducive to fair trade (monopoly, collusion, etc.), yet we allow & in sometimes even promote those very actions from our labor force.

That said, I realize that in some instances, unions are a necessary evil in that they provide an 'efficiency' in the market. You need to quote overpay unquote to have people make widgets so that there's enough capital available for people to purchase do-hickeys and keep them off the public dole. In theory, at least.

  2. Another way to look at is that it's perfect timing.

Last year, once we got things going, we 'won'. And we did this w/ great ST, near great Dee, & quite poor offense.

Yes, maybe in the near future, our Dee will decline as our major contributors age, but if the Offense can rise above the level of mediocrity by then (entirely reasonable) we should be able to continue to win.

  3. I don't think it's too unrealistic to expect our offense to actually improve this year.

Statistically speaking, it most categories, we were toward the bottom of the league.

Again, based on stats, we had one of the better Ds and THE BEST ST.

Assuming JP (& Co.) don't screw up too much, and assuming/hoping the other facets of our team don't slip too much, we should be better than last year.

  4. Okay, I'll give this a try -

1). Done wrong. It should be at least 50% better.

    2) Teri Hatcher

    3) Was there a player named Hyman Siedhue?

    4) Is it too late for Bob Keeshum (Capt Kangaroo) & Mr. GreenJeans? (I'm assuming you can try someone posthumulously.)

    5) Tea. Earl Grey. Hot. No wait, that belongs in the Picard is better than Kirk thread.

Let's go w/ just plain tap water.

  5. Like most non-1st round draft picks, he's likely going to be getting minimum wage base salaries.

Being a 3rd round pick, it's not like he's going to be getting a multi-million $ S.B. Amortized over the length of his contract, it won't amount to much one way or the other.

  6. Suppose you were an extremely wealthy individual that liked to engage in certain nefarious activities that were shall we say 'predatory'.

Would you be careful enough to select those potential victims that could easily be discredited were allegations of your illegal actions to be tried?

    Just food for thought...

  7. I just noticed that I have a tan line from my sunglasses. (I play a fair amount of VBall). As I was watching beach VBall last night, I realized that the players aren't particularly tanned. You'd think that playing in these tournaments, 6 or so hours a day, on a regular basis, the players would be very bronze. One player (Kerri Walsh), is actually almost white.

I was wondering if much like they dis last year at golf's US Open, where the course was so parched, they used green filters on the telecast so the course looked better, if they do the same thing telecasting AVP VBall. (Sort of a public service so as to not promote over tanning & thereby skin cancer)

    Any insight?

  8. I've already got the drill. I'm quite happy w/ it. Problem is one of the batteries doesn't hold a charge well, so I was going to replace it. That's when the sticker shock hit.

As for the Craftsmen, I now try to avoid Sears since they merged w/ KMart as kMart stole my money  (defaulted on their stock).

  9. Okay, for about $130 you get a nice cordless drill kit (Makita 12v 6227).

This kit contains a nice carry case, the drill, 2 batteries and a battery charger along w/ a few screwdriver bits.

How come the replacement batteries cost $55 each?

    That just ain't right.

  10. Facinating topic.

I don't know if this is a definition per se, but personally, I'd say that a sport is a competition where one competitors production has an effect on his opponent(s).

I do not consider golf a sport, although I actively participate. I recognize the incredible

skill exhibited by top players (actually, you could argue that my comprehension only reaches to about the level of a scratch man or LPGA player; PGA touring pros are so much above that.) Whether I play w/ Tiger, some hack or someone of equivalent talents as myself, barring certain pychological impacts (which can't be determined), my performace is the same.

I don't know if I would classify Nascar as a sport as I'm not sufficiently familiar w/ it.

It definitely is a competition AND competitors have an influence on how others do. However, how much one competitors performance is based on equipment (car) and how much their innate talent, I have no way of judging.

(Give Tiger a set of hickory sticks & he'll still whip my butt. Put this Danika babe in a '72 Pinto, let me drive her car & w/ a bit of practice, I'd bet I could beat her.)

Football, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, all true forms of sport. Baseball sort of gets an asterick as it's mostly Pitcher vs batter, w/ the pitcher having some 'helpers'.

Horse racing is definitely sport for the horses; I don't really think it is for the jockeys, but again, not being that familiar w/ it, I don't know how much the results are dependent

on equipment (horse) or skill/athletic prowess (jockey).

  11. Movies, off the top of my head, I'll go w/ Magnificant Seven/Seven Samurai.

As for music, I think I feel somewhat differently than you. To me, music is all about the interpretation of the song. Different versions/interpretations can be SUBSTANTIALLY different (case in point, All Along the Watchtower). That's what makes a song good or bad (IMHO). There's plenty of room for many versions of the same song.

As for movies, it's mostly story. Once the stories been told, it basically gets tired.

That said, the 2 songs that come to mind are Jamaican (sp?) Farewell Jimmy Buffet, &

Landslide by Dixie Chicks (They're vocals are inferior to Stevie Nicks, but the background instrumention adds to the song.).

  12. For every Archie Manning, Anthony Munoz and Jack Elway, there's a Marv Marinovich, Kellen Winslow or Bob Johnson.

If the Bob Johnson you refer to is RJ's father, all indications I'm aware of is that he did a fine job of parenting. Raised a 'fine young man'. As for a great fotball player  ...

Also, I think there's a few indications that Archie's offspring might not qualify for citizens of the year.

  13. Thanks for the #s. I realize this is a relatively small sampling, but it's basically what you'd expect I think.

The reason UDFAs are so well represented is that there are so many more of them.

A team typically brings to camp about 4 'low' round draft choices and perhaps 20 UDFAs.

Considering the level of talent is so close (think about how often it takes a few stops for a player to 'get it'). that certainly seems reasonable.

In a somewhat different vein, each draft class has a small # of athletes that are vastly superior to the others. MOST of them make it & continue to flourish in the NFL.

2nd rounders (& probably late 1st rounders) fall somewhere in between. They've done something to make them stand out, but not in a sterling fashion.

It'd be interested to see a further breakdown that is somewhat weighted for how much a particular level of draft choice contributes.

  14. I don't know what the demands are like coaching college, particularly Div II, but in the NFL, I get the impression that 80-100 hour work weeks are about norm.

When would he have time for any other endeavor?

Then again being 5-27, maybe he was only putting in 40, which left him plenty of time for 'more important' things.

  15. I've recently seen synthetic mulch available at Lowe's &/or Home of Pot. (I haven't actually seen the stuff, just the ads for it.)

I don't know if it's a new product or not & was wondering if anyone was familiar &/or had any experiences w/ it. It's supposed to be color fast & I don't like that after a few months my previously nice red mulch becomes a dingey yuck color.

For that matter, whattaya think about those weed-screens? Are the worth the effort. It certainly would be nice if I spent less time weeding flower beds.

    TIA

  16. Fascinating read.

I seem to recall that OJs fastest 40 was like 4.43. If you doubt how fast he was, get an old Guinness book of World Records, where they still measure track events in yards & check out who ran the 3rd leg of the 4x100 yd relay.

I'll give you a hint, he was at USC in '67 or '68 and his 1st name was Orethal.
