1. I'm trying to think what building they are in that I would have known but right now I'm not picturing any.

On another note there was a pizza place off of Buffalo Ave when you were heading out of town.  Past Hooker, just past the firestation. There was a restaurant on the corner. Take a left go about two blocks.  The place was called Mom's.  Greatest sliced pizza I've ever had.  Was square cut into squares.  In the 60's it was 10cents a slice.  I believe this may have been Buzzi's parents.  Buzzi's sauce has a similar taste.

I believe Mom's was on 56th. It was great cold and was sold in many of the little delis in town.

As for your question "what bldg they are in"...I assume you are talking about Pizza Oven. Dunno about the bldg they are in...but, they are on Niagara St on the other side of 19th st. (but on the same side of Niagara St) as Bozak's (now out of business).

I just read that sentence and it's so confusing now I'm not even sure where they are. :)

  2. Man, that place is still there. My granfather lived right across the street in a 2nd story walkup. Huge treat to go his house, get pizza oven pizza, and watch Ultraman on channell 29. Our TV at home didn't have UHF, and both were B&W. Now I cant live without HD Tivo lol

    441861

    Look, isa monster! Call Ultraman!

Both LaHac and Pizza Oven are still around and doing well. Here's the thing, Niagara Falls pizza ROCKS in general (more WOPS, better pizza...that simple).

Pizza Oven can be quite good one day and the next day be pretty average. It's cheap and usually already made and hot when you get there. Certainly one of the better "slice houses". It's "The Pizza with the Big Secret". I'm not sure I want to know that secret...it makes me...well, you know.

Mr Ventry's is a better (more consistant) slice house, IMO, than Pizza Oven. Particularly good is their "romano slice". Not as good as Truscello's slice was...but, damn good. For the record, what Rocket's sells is just NOT Truscello's. (A place in Wilson makes a decent Truscello's slice.) Truscello's was the best tailgate pizza ever as it was great cold.

A great thing about Pizza Oven and Mr. Ventry's is I usually get a free slice or two if I order two or more slices...almost EVERY time. BEAUTIFUL!

Sammy's, like Pizza Oven, is inconsistent...but, great on a good day.

Still, they are slice places. LaHacienda is a pie joint...and their pizza is always best eaten right there. It doesn't travel well. My parent's live 3 blocks away and that's fine...but, I woldn't travel more than a mile or so with it.

Now the best SLICE I've ever had is in San Francisco. L'Osteria del Forno on Columbus makes great thin-crust (AKA pizza) slices fresh to order, in a brick oven. Pricey...and worth it.

Damnit! All this pizza talk has made me hungry. It's lunch time...and Amici's is down the street. That'll do. :)

    Later

  3. There's really no comparison...if you like thin crust pizza (or as I call it, pizza)

LaHacienda, Pine Ave. in Niagara Falls (no relation to LaHacienda on Brighton).

Pepperoni...well done. Not as good as it used to be, but still twice as good as any WNY pizza. Trust me.

  4. I will be in the New Haven/Wallingford area Sunday and plan to watch the game with Babyrock. She has a place she usually goes to, but does anyone know where the backer's meet, or have a recommendation?

    441192

Just go to NG's house. He LOVES company. No need to let him know either...just drop in. :)

  5. There were FAR too many plays that could have changed the game to pick one and say "That's the play that cost us that Superbowl".  They include: Bennett dropping sure interception and probable touchdown on drive that gives Giants their last FG; not getting Hostetler to drop the ball on the safety; Reed's drop when he got hammered the next time the Bills got the ball; the dropped pass to the TE on that series; Lofton bobbling the ball on the bomb he caught instead of catching it clean and going into the endzone; 2 or 3 other 3rd and forevers that kept Giants drives going; Kelly getting shaken up on and having to waste a timeout on the last drive; and Bills losing about 12 seconds when the officials reviewed McKellar's catch.

I'm sure there are a few others, but I'm trying to forget that game!  Also, if I'm not mistaken, Talley's elbow had gotten messed up in the Raiders blowout and his whole arm was taped up.  I don't know how much that effected him, but that is about the only game I can remember where he missed tackles.

    Dave.

    440851

Well of course you're right logically...but there's no place for logic here, damnit! Actually a few of those you mention are a little different..."not getting Hostetler to drop the ball"? But, the thing about Ingram's play is that we missed several tackles on a 3rd and very long.

So, while logically, there were many missed opportunities...Emotionally that was the killer. Now I'm all pissed-off!

Thank God it's getting close to cocktail time and all will be well soon.

  6. You're telling me that if you had to choose one linebacker for the Bills, you would choose Fletcher over Spikes? I dig Fletch, and think he's a tremendous competitor and player but he's not the player Spikes is. Spikes is steak and sizzle.

    440723

K-Dog, I think I'm going to agree (I think) that TKO may be the best the Bills have seen. Also, as an old guy, I'd like to see more love for Stratton and Haslett...though neither were as dominate or complete as TKO.

With that said, Fletcher is vastly underrated by Bills fans (and the NFL in general, IMO) and his total consistancy and incredible speed allow TKO to do some of the things he does in this defense. TKO can free-lance a little and show that "Star quality"...or sizzle because he knows London has his back...Fletch is EVERYWHERE. LF may not have much sizzle...he's all steak.

With that said, If I had to choose only one linebacker for my team I'd choose:

TKO...if the other linebackers were better than average...or if the MLB was superior

    Fletcher...if the other LBs stunk.

    BTW, how ya been?

  7. I stand by my original comments - Drew lost zip on his mid-range passes over the last few seasons, especially by the end of those seasons.  Bill, I think you misunderstood the point I was making:  the velocity on the mid-range passes is especially necessary in a cold climate.  Montana (except for his ill-fated KC stint) and Young didn't play in one; Cunningham had his best years in a dome.  Flutie couldn't throw the deep out, which limited the offense in the cold weather.

I'm NOT trying to revive old topics or take a shot at anyone - why go there, Bill?  I'm simply saying that I finally saw JP up close (I've seen Kelly, Iron Rob Johnson, Collins, Flutie, Bledsoe up close too), and I'm telling you this kid has more of a gun than any of them except perhaps Kelly.  It will definitely come in handy.

As an aside, I agree with the posters who say they'd rather have someone who can throw the 15-yard outs than someone who throws a pretty deep ball.  Kerry Collins, Bledsoe and Jeff George throw the nicest deep balls I've ever seen - and I wouldn't want any of them in a playoff game in the cold weather.

    439433

Coach, you are correct, IMO. JP has a ton of arm. I actually think it is stronger than Bledsoe's in EVERY WAY. That's not a shot at DB who had a very strong arm in his prime and, as you rightfully point out, can still toss a long pass.

The short and mid-level stuff JP is rock-solid at (except when he throws it to the other team, of course). And, throwing on the move doesn't seem to present a problem.

Bill, you haven't seen JP throw long much yet. I think you're gonna LOVE it when it happens.

The Kid will make mistakes. His scrambling and running will cost us now and again, but I think it's going to help more than it hurts...a LOT more.

When they were drafted I thought it was clear that Big Ben was a player, and maybe had the most talent at the time...that Eli was the safest bet, he will be fine (but, he's got a lot to overcome with TC as the head coach and Gilbride as the OC)...and that JP had the greatest upside. I think we're just seeing the beginning of it now.

    When's kickoff?

  8. 1)  You aren't human and never will be, so quit trying to feel that way.

    2)  Excited or too much ------- ? fill in the drug.

    3)  All those women aren't interested in a grandfather figure.

    4)  Welcome back bastard...maybe this time you will stick around for a while.

    439278

    1. True...my bad

    2. Virtually drug free (not counting booze...or the recreational drugs...or my prescriptions...never mind)

    3. Chicks dig The Dean. (Now, if I just keep repeating it, maybe I can actually make it come true.) This is so funny...one of the guys who used to own the North Star is a complete letch when he get's drunk and is totally UN-smooth. He comes out of a bar the other day and this pretty young thing is standing near his car smoking a butt. He says something to her like "Hey, you want to smoke something else" or something equally insulting and stupid. "F#uk You, Grandpa" was her hilarious response.

    4. Will I stay? Depends if you ignore all my PMs like last time. But, since I have a stable (I think) job and a computer that actually works. You're probably stuck with me for awhile. I can not be on this damn thing all the time, though.

BTW, no BF in Indiana is a wonderful thing...no?

  9. Finally relocated back to SF (I missed it every day) and feel ALMOST human. Saw my first game at the Star in quite a few years. Hooked up with NoCal Aaron (Aaron...right?) and his awesome girlfriend Lori, SF Bills Fan, long-time North Star regulars Brad and Marty and a large crowd of Bills fans. Pretty sure I talked their ears off...I was kinda excited.

The crowd there is really first rate. The Star is doing a great job now...I really couldn't have asked for more. (For those of you familiar with the North Star history, it really went down hill after the original owners sold and The Senator, Charley and I had lef the area. The new owners really "get it".) But the most surprising this was how many smoking hot women were there rooting for our young Wiliams...BEAUTIFUL!

I haven't had that much fun watching a game in a LONG time. Needless to say, I got faced.

While this is not ment as a LAMP post it may, indeed, be one...sorry!

  10. I passed by there (Page's Whistle Pig) today, and it looked to be open...but, maybe I just assumed it. I'll check it out tomorrow.

I'm no dog expert...not my favorite food. While I'll eat a dog at a baseball game, or on the streets of NYC (dirty water dog) if I'm starved and press for time, Ted's is the only commercial place I've ever thought had GREAT dogs.

BTW, ever have Omaha Steaks hotdogs? Their steaks are pretty average, IMO...but their burgers and hotdogs are out of this world. Their dogs may be better than Sahlens...I said maybe...and, again, I'm no hotdog expert.

Yep, that's my choice too.  They boil the dogs rather than grill them.  The white hots are incredible.

I'm not sure if they're going to open up this year.  The property appears to be for sale:

Anybody from the Town of Niagara know if they're still around?

  11. This is a totally fact/knowledge-free pick.  I usually do a bit of research before picking...but, this year no time (or $ to bet, for that matter).

As a fan of John Fante...

    BANDINI!

    It is Spring, after all.

    331020

    Bandini? :o

    Finished 19th in a 20-hourse field. What a dumb-ass this guy is.

I guess I'll stick to just reading John Fante.

  12. I just found out that my wife has skin cancer. She had a dark red, "mole" that was very dry feeling and rough on her back. I made her go to the doctor to get it looked at and we just found out it's cancer. They are going to start treatment today and hopefully it was caught early enough. This board helped me get through the death of my Grandmother while I was deployed to Africa and now I'm scheduled to go to Iraq in August.

Please just keep my wife, Heidi, in your prayers. Thank you.

    You got mine

  13. Welcome, newbies.

My only request is that you talk a little FOOTBALL around here, just to balance out all the OT posts! :D  ;)  ;)

    329032

578 posts and posin' as a long-timer? Dun you worry, Lucy. As the season gets closer, the football-to-OT ratio changes dramatically. This is the ideal time for OT chatter, IMO.

Welcome newbies..that's anyone under 1,000 posts!

    0:)

  14. Bloody uniforms and gear are always burned after a death of a service member. This isn't a "cover-up" whether they knew it was friendly fire or not. Media hype.

    329036

Are you saying they burn the items before completing an investigation? I understand they burn the items...but, if there was a question of the circumstances surrounding his death, wouldn't they be burning evidence that might help them in answering those questions? The article goes on to say:

[Army investigators now say his clothes should have been preserved as evidence.

Army officials said the Jones report concludes that the Tillman family should have been told at once that "friendly fire" was suspected. The report, however, found no official intent by military commanders to hide the truth.]

It's not just the Washington Post or CNN pointing fingers or hyping this. The presentation seems straight-forward and fair.

Because he was Pat Tillman it's getting more attention...in the same way his death gained more attention because of who he is/was. This takes NOTHING away from what he did. He's still a hero, IMO. But, to believe they should not investigate what might be potential misconduct (or worse) because he was a soldier is naive, IMO.
