None of that is to dispute that Clayton is a rare athlete. He ran a 12 second 100 meters aged 15 and you just don't find that freakish combination of speed and size very often. But he has tried soccer, rugby, athletics, boxing and tennis without finding a sport where he can channel that natural athleticism. Maybe football is the one for him, I certainly hope so, but when people refer to him as a rugby star... or even a rugby player it just isn't really true. He was a supermarket shelf stacker who played a bit of rugby at the weekend.

    OK, then...

The most exciting thing in there, to me, is all the mention of Travis Clayton. I have expressed my hope (a half dozen times, or more, since he was drafted) that Clayton will, at some point, be used as a sixth lineman in jumbo packages. This is a 6'7, 310lb monster, who ran a 4.79 40, and, as a former supermarket shelf stacker who played a bit of rugby at the weekend, knows how to catch a ball. Imagine him in as a sixth lineman, declared as an eligible receiver, catching a Josh Allen pass in stride, and trucking anyone who dares tackle him!

How much fun would that be?

Three years and still didn't understand the offense? Ladies and gentlemen...your Miami LoLphins....

Is it me, or is there a subtle dig on McDaniel in this clip? "... That accountability piece is something that we needed... also pushing us every day..."

The Dolphins have a culture problem, and if half the anonymous reports coming out of that organization are true, it's systemic. I doubt the new WR coach is going to be able to fix it.

He was not a rugby phenom. He was an amateur rugby player. He is a hugely athletic massive man. He has tried about 5 sports without finding a place to harness that. Rugby didn't work out. Maybe football will. But I wouldn't use his short amateur rugby career as a sign of anything.

Very well, but I remain undeterred. I've edited my post to "rugby player," and maintain my point. The Bills use that sixth-lineman jumbo package so frequently, but I can't remember an O-lineman catching a pass since Tommy Doyle.

  5. Bills:

    • Keon Coleman takes that next step we’re all hoping for, but still finishes fourth in receptions behind Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid, and Elijah Moore, who leads the team in receptions.
    • Tre White makes the pro bowl, and comeback player of the year. (Declines the prowl for obvious reasons.)
    • KJ Hamler is elevated at least twice from the PS, and gets at least one TD.

    AFCE:

    • Patriots get a wild card.
    • Dolphins and Jets finish below 500.
    • Dolphins fire Grier, or McDaniel before the end of the regular season. (Whichever one they don’t fire, gets fired after the regular season.)

    Rest of league:

    • Bo Nix finishes top ten in MVP voting.
    • Aaron Rodgers, and Mike Thomlinson get into a shouting match during a game.
    • Cowboys miss the playoffs, and Dak Prescott calls it quits.

They both missed an opportunity, because they couldn't see the Forrest for the Tre's.

Yes! This! What I have always found is that football games and championships are won with players who get the most mentions during training camp! It is impossible for any team to win a championship without mentions!

Not just the number, mind you. They have to occur within 48 hours of the start of camp.

  8. Travis Clayton. He's going to make the 53 get put in as the sixth lineman in jumbo packages, and declare as an eligible receiver. He'll catch a pass from Allen, and absolutely pancake whomever's in front of him. It will take a minimum of three defenders to take him down. He will change the way opposing teams defend the jumbo package.

    I mean, it's a cool fantasy, right...?

I'm sure it's crossed their mind.

I guess the debate is whether it was the primary reason or just an additional consideration.

Considering the complexity of modern NFL offenses, I'd be inclined to think Billl's description was their primary reason for not doing it. I'm not sure how injury-prone the PR position is in the current version of the NFL; I'd guess it's a relatively safe duty.

Geez, how much does it cost to park a 10 speed up there?

    A "10 speed." You're dating yourself again!

He was probably paying for a lot more than that. That is just what he admitted to.

I don't think they really know or care to know. They just wanted to get their narrative across.

The article does have the odor of ginned-up outrage. This is the era of click-driven news.

I get what you are saying, but Uber rides, food, physical therapists as rent really a competitive advantage. Not compared to his knowledge for the game when it comes to practice, play on etc..

He can't help every school, but if he can help one, I say do it.  Kids need all the support they can get in 2025.

Some coaches are better than others, but there's lessons in that for those kids as well

    Sure.

But I absolutely 100% understand why other coaches would complain-- I certainly would. They have to face an NFL QB, and he's paying to get them to practices, a pre-game nutrition program, and athletic-recovery services? And obviously, it was in violation of their league rules, or he wouldn't have been suspended. I can't imagine that the organization that runs that league was anything other than ecstatic that they had an NFL QB involved in their program. But, given the circumstances, you can't expect them to not follow their own rules.

  12. 2 minutes ago, TBBills Fan said:

Exactly. Seems that way.  It's a shame, as I'm sure the kids lose, which is sad since people involved in education are the ones crying fowlost likely

I get it, though. The article references "placating the rules are rules crowd..." but i'm going to assume that the school that Bridgewater coaches at isn't the only poor school in that league. From the other (potentially poor) school's perspectives, competing against another school that has an NFL QB as its coach is bad enough, but to have that coach dumping money into its program in a way that violates the rules for fair competition is a bridge too far. (sorry for the pun...)

  13. My assumption is that it's a district policy in that system. There's a similar policy in place where my wife teaches, and my kids go to school-- sports programs have to stay within their district budgets. It's aimed at keeping the schools in wealthier areas from buying an unfair advantage.

I hope Spencer Brown makes it. He and Dawkins were just excellent last year. But I doubt he gets the love. I'm sure Dawkins will make it.

I've always thought this was a fun, and interesting poll, but I'll never put much stock in its accuracy. Being that it's current players who cast votes, there is certainly at least some element of popularity involved. The fact that Josh Allen-- reputed as one of the top trash-talkers in the league-- was ranked outside of the top ten in '24 makes that clear.

As Spencer Brown has always been quick to get in anyone's face who even looks at Josh wrong, I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't a very popular player outside of Buffalo. But we sure love him!

  15. For me, it's been Khalil Shakir, both as a player, and person. But, by the end of the season, I was really becoming a fan of Ty Johnson, who's a bit of an unsung hero. He started the '24 season listed as the #3 RB, behind Ray Davis, and later in the season was listed as co-#2. He consistently made incredibly athletic receptions, is a great route runner, and has great speed. His athleticism, paired with his incredible situational awareness has made him one of Allen's go-to guys for extending broken plays. And by all accounts, he's a great teammate, and a great guy. Very easy to be a fan of.
