  1. too bad cuz its brilliant

    It's not brilliant. It's silly.

And, btw, I did in fact read the post. My comment was sarcastic. I simply meant that the thread is a waste of time. Are you actually suggesting that the "veteran leadership on this team" stand up in front of the press and counter the praise we've received in the media? To what end? Maybe you didn't read your post. You wrote: "players like fitz and barnett and wilson and yes now stevie need to be much more vocal about not listening to the hype..." That's hilarious. I can just see Fitz standing in front of a microphone, "hey guys, don't believe the hype, we're not that good!"

And, I would love for you to give one example of ANY player saying or doing anything that would qualify as "delusional self adulation."

The praise that the Bills have received has been well deserved. To say that "everybody and their mother framing the bills offseason as the best in the nfl," is an exaggeration. There are several other teams that pundits are citing as having the best offseason including the Patriots (Steve Wyche). Many believe that Tampa Bay has had the best offseason, and I would agree.

    GO BILLS!

  2. misery loves company has absolutely nothing to do with it. thats not my modus operandi, never has been, never will

its about focus and desperation. sports is chock full of stories of teams that get a lot of attention and then crumble under their own expectations. in fact, this is much more the norm than the exception. its human nature to feel some satisfaction when people are talking you up, and at the highest level of professional sports it only takes a tiny edge to mean the difference between winning and losing. to a young team on the rise like the bills if it isnt put in check it definitely has the potential to set them up for overconfidence and destroying their psyche when things start to go wrong as they always do for every team

i can virtually guarantee you that most of the comments here are from young males who dont know the difference between healthy confidence and delusional self adulation. its no coincidence that the good coaches and mature team leaders who are consistently successful praise the abilities of their opponents and keep the team reminded they have to keep their feet on the ground to maintain every tiny bit of edge they can get. of course they have to have a reasonable level of confidence, but a mature professional understands where that line is and manages to it. quite frankly, i dont see that happening right now with this team. it still early but it has to start soon and be hammered into their heads every chance they get so that every single practice is conducted with an edge of desperation so that they wring every ounce of focus they can at every turn. the last thing they need is to have back slapping sessions based on kipers latest fkg tweets of love

do i even have to mention the recent highly painful examples we are all familiar with? the last three seasons the sabres were touted as cup contenders and twice missed the playoffs entirely. it was only after they ѕhit the bed badly and started sweating buckets that they started winning. ive already mentioned recent bills failures - do you think it was pure coincidence that immediately following stevie johnsons reckless assertion 'why not the bills' prior to the first jets beatdown it started a spiral of scared play and ugly losses? sure, they had a lot of injuries, but they also played scared and defeated most of the time immediately after that first jets pounding. do you really think going into that game with stevie proclaiming they could challenge any team for a superbowl berth didnt have cascading effects when the jets smashed them in the mouth on national tv? negro please

youre sticking your head in the sand if you think all this gushing cant have a negative impact. i want to hear more of the veteran leadership on this team coming out and specifically addressing this. weve heard a smattering of 'we havent dont anything yet', but not nearly enough to counter what has been an increasing tide of ball riding in the media. just as stevie set up horrible psychological factors by proudly beating his chest and proclaiming last seasons bills were just as capable as the jets (a ridiculous assertion considering the massive difference in recent and extensive playoff experience), not actively managing the hype by continually bringing the squad back to the reality that they havent done anything yet could have devastating consequences when the inevitable struggles start to creep in

players like fitz and barnett and wilson and yes now stevie need to be much more vocal about not listening to the hype, keeping their heads down, and concentrating on earning the headlines with wins. history has proven time and again if they dont do that they will unravel once the inevitable adversity hits. once that happens, you almost never recover in time, and more often are on the road to devastating and embarrassing disappointment

you would think i didnt need to tell a buffalo sports fan about that

now that i have sufficiently undressed the preposterous crowing going on in here, how bout we all go for mighty tacos

I'm sorry, but that post is way too long for me to read.

  3.

As for TJ Graham: I don't know if he'll be better than Roscoe. But at least he'll be bigger and more physical than Roscoe.

Is Graham really going to be that much more physical? From the footage I've observed (admittedly limited) I thought he seemed less aggressive- more like a gazelle than a horse. On a couple of the highlights that were shown during the draft, I thought to myself: if Fitz ever hangs him out midfield, it might be the end of his career. That being said, he will certainly be faster than Roscoe.

  4. I didn't like the attempt to sign Meachem. That guy is nothing special. I'm glad they passed once his price tag got high, so no harm done there. I didn't like the Teej Graham pick, but we'll see if it works out. I wasn't thrilled about them pursuing Mark Anderson (if you don't know what "regression to the mean" is, google it), but for the money they got him at, it's not a bad risk. I question the wisdom of drafting a 27-year-old backup C who never played C until after his college career was over, but that was a late pick, so whatever. I didn't like the Vince Young signing due to possible attitude issues; hopefully Young either proves me wrong or gets cut in training camp. I would have liked to see a little bit of attention paid to the DT spot -- I know our starters are awesome when healthy, but our backups are mostly 3-4 DEs and underwhelming NTs. Maybe they plan on going Giants style and rotating DEs at DT on passing downs.

And that's everything I can think of. Overall, I'm very happy with this offseason; it's the most I've liked an offseason in a long time. Obviously it would've been nice to draft a QB as a developmental guy, but the only one I liked at all (that we had a shot at) was Russell Wilson, and the 3rd round seems way too early to draft that guy. Frankly I'm stunned that Pete Carroll pulled that move, especially after signing Matt Flynn. Even though I hated the Graham pick, I don't know that I would've preferred them to take Wilson in that spot.

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about regarding Anderson. Are you suggesting that Anderson's performance last season should be considered above his baseline? Did he have games with a lot of sacks that you think should be considered outliers? Yours is the first post on here that I've read that doesn't consider him a good acquisition. Pleas explain.

  5. how come no one is bringing up our QB coach LEE who taught sparano everything he knew about the wild cat which made him able to have a .500 record as a HC.

Lee worked under Sparano in Miami, not the other way around. It is true that Lee used the wildcat quite successfully in Arkansas. But, that was college football. To say that he was responsible for Sparano's limited success in Miami is a stretch.

  6. interested in a wager? bills will handle the jets on both sides of the ball, name the terms and i'm game.........being worried about tony saprano is laughable, he's a joke who couldn't win more games then he lost

I'm not going to bet against the Bills! I'm trying to figure out if I should bet heavily at the Las Vegas Hilton with a 5.5 spread! However, if you're going to use the W/L column as a yardstick, where does that put Gailey?!

  7. Sporano had our number when his QBs and RBs had more daylight than they knew what to do with. The amount of times our pass rush was ineffective and our run defense really more of a mirage should be over now that we have a real DC and Super Mario. It won't be as easy to run on us and with sanchez, you rattle him early and Tebow will be in, remember how effective he was playing us last year? Im not concerned with the jets

I'm going to assume that any former head coach in our division moving to OC for another team, also in our division, is going to know an awful lot about every team in our division. I'm not at all worried about our pass rush- especially against the Jets. But, I think it's going to be crucial for us to stop the run this season. I think we were 28th last season? It goes without saying that Sparano knows a lot about us. It's easy to read all of the crazy headlines (and even crazier Rex Ryan ramblings) about the Jets and dismiss them as a dysfunctional mess- they are. But, they also have some talented players, and I suspect, a talented OC.

Another fact to remember is that the Bills have a new Defensive Coordinator to go with their new defense. So Wanny is much more of mystery to the Jets, then Sparano is to the Bills.

    Good point.

  8. completely disagree - dude is a loser and nothing to fear.......he was .500 as a HC and just finding his feet with a dysfuntional bunch of knobs, expect lots of teething pains......if you're going to worry about week 1, find something else to worry about - saprano ain't it

I am not so quick to dismiss him. I think you could make the argument (many have) that Brian Schottenheimer is a loser. But, Sparano took over the Phins the season after they went 1-15, and took them to the playoffs with a 11-5 record. That's a pretty quick turnaround. And, in the two seasons afterward, the players were the most vocal in defending him. You're right about the disfunction in NY, but Sparano is most certainly used to dealing with disfunction. I would expect Sparano to solidify a run first offense and have a good idea of how to play to our weaknesses. He will also give Ryan the opportunity to focus more on defense which is, of course, his forte.

  9. It’s just over100 days until the Bills take on the Jets in New Jersey. Personally, I think our improved defense and pass rush is going to lay Sanchez out. But, odds-makers still have us as 5.5 point underdogs in our first game and also have us ranked well behind the Jets overall. This doesn’t worry me so much this early in the off season. My biggest question mark is:

    Tony Sparano.

Most pundits and Jets fans believe that Sparano will be a marked improvement over Brian Schottenheimer, and I would agree. And, as the former HC in Miami, I think it’s safe to say he’s got our number.

I have read quite a few informed, inspired, and educated opinions on these forums. (Quite a few stupid ones as well!) I’m curious to read other Bills fan’s take on Tony Sparano as the Jets OC.

  10.

Here's what James Walker sees in the Bills offense (published yesterday on ESPN). He has the Bills offense ranked 2nd in the AFC East, ahead of the Jets and Dolphins:

    No. 2: Buffalo Bills

Analysis: The Bills have the potential to be solid on offense. The big question is, can quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick prove he is the long-term solution? Fitzpatrick looked fine early in 2011 and fell off in the second half of last season. Injured ribs were mentioned as one of the reasons. Running backs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller should be one of the best one-two punches in the NFL this year. Steve Johnson is a solid receiver coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. The Bills also have a versatile offensive line that fits their wide open style. The Bills still need to find their No. 2 receiver. David Nelson filled the void at the end of last year, but he's better in the slot. Donald Jones is coming back from injury and rookie T.J. Graham will get a hard look. If the Bills figure that out, their offense can be dangerous.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/42620/ranking-afc-east-offenses

I agree with James Walker regarding the Bills standing in the AFCE. But, I'm surprised at how many people disagree. In fact, oddsmakers in Vegas still have the Bills positioned last in the division. The Las Vegas Hilton is even accepting bets for week one of the regular season (the only sports book I know of to take such bets so early) and have the Jets at a 5.5 advantage. And, the consensus is that the Dolphins are slightly favored over the Bills for the conference (18/1 and 22/1, respectively).

Personally, considering the sad state of affairs in Miami, and with Rex Ryan saying such preposterous things as, "we will be like two different teams," I don't see how we aren't a better team. But, one thing I have learned is that the odds makers that the Vegas sports books rely on for their numbers are very good at their jobs.

  11. I would actually read the OP, before ripping this poor guy and calling him a troll for posting what he thinks to be the national perception, not his own perception, of the team.

I don't think the OP is a troll. But, how do you equate statements like, "RB ... Freddy Jackson... Another free agent pickup who starts..." or "Vince Young.. Backup QB... Most likely washed up," or "Chan Gailey... A big time loser with the Bills..." as national perception? Show me a serious media outlet that has referred to Gailey as "a big time loser," or has shown Jackson anything but respect. And while some pundits have expressed some wariness regarding Vince Young (a concern that I share), I don't remember anyone saying anything close to "most likely washed up."

Come to think of it, maybe this guy is a troll.

  12. The National Media says next to Nothing about the Buffalo Bills Offense... have you noticed?

Here is what I believe they see when they look at the leadership and roster....

The head coach and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey... A big time loser with the Bills... His won lost record proves it... He has bounced around from team to team... Even when Ralph Wilson chose him as head coach the Bills fans were not in favor of his hiring... Many wanted Shanahan now with Washington... Gailey has a lot to prove.

QB... Ryan Fitzpatrick ... Picked up as a free agent... Bills fans believe he is better as a backup than as a starter... He was a 7th round pick... Bills management is putting to much faith in a losing QB...

QB ... Vince Young.. Backup QB...Picked up by the Bills because no one else wanted him... Most likely washed up

QB ... Tyler Thigper... OMG are you kidding

RB ... Freddy Jackson... Another free agent pickup who starts..

RB ... C.J. Spiller ... A first round pick who has done litte and could be a bust

FB.... Corey McIntrey .. Only touched the ball 4 times last year...

TE ... Scott Chandler... Another free agent pick up no other team wanted... slow

WR ... Stevie Johnson ... A 7th round pick considered their #1 receiver

WR ... Marcus Easley .... a 4th round pick going into his 3rd year and never seen the field, maybe the #2 receiver

WR ... David Nelson .... Another free agent

WR ... Donald Jones ... Another free agent

WR ... T.J. Graham .... Picked in the 3rd round but could have been a 7th round pick

OL ... Corey Glenn .... A rookie LT

    OL ... Chris Hairston .. A 4th round pick

OL ... Kraig Urbik...... Another free agent

OL ... Chad Reinhart ... Another free agent

OL ... Eric Pears ...... Another free agent

Then we have Brad Smith... What is he a WR, RB, QB, Special teamer? Bills are even not sure...

Where is the Talent to get this squad to the playoffs?

And we the media are to believe with this motley crew they will make the playoffs ? are you kidding ?

But when you ask Bills fans, many believe they are on the right track, as do I and this so called motley crew will preform to playoff standards... Do you? and why do you Believe.......???

I think this is the most pessimistic post I have ever read by a fan. He uses whatever round someone was drafted in, be it first or seventh or whatever, as a criticism. Somehow free agency also makes someone suspect, like Freddy, "another free agent pickup who starts..."

Put a little cream in your coffee, pal!

  13. I don't think you can overstate how bad Jauron was with his no huddle offensive scheme being a perfect example of his incompetence. A no huddle offense without a decent O-line? If you look at teams with effective no-huddle offenses, they rely on fairly simple formations and a QB who can read defenses. The QB has to have time in the pocket. It's hard to run a no huddle offense and read defenses when the QB spends most of his time running for his life. I always felt bad for Trent Edwards. He never had a chance to develop. He was set up to fail. What last season's early success proved, if nothing else, was that Jauron had the talent to succeed. I'm not sure where that dope is right now- I know he spent some time with the Steelers after we canned him- but I wouldn't want to see him coaching Pop Warner.

  14. Yeah I'm guessing that the topic refers to the over/under on wins this year.

I'm sorry to disagree with you guys, but the odds posted in Vegas are for the week one games in which the Jets are favored by 5.5 and the over/under is 42.5. Here's a handy Wikipedia link that explains the over/under pretty well.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over-under

The only future odds that I know of beyond week one are for AFC, NFC, and Super Bowl championships. Currently, btw, the Bills are 50/1 for the SB.

While I'm at it, here's another link that carries most of the Vegas sports book odds. You can expect to see some very different numbers once the preseason starts.

    http://www.vegasinsider.com/nfl/odds/las%2Dvegas/

  15. I'm not a betting man. But I'm tempted to make an exception this year when I hear the Vegas odds-makers have the Bills over/under at 6.5.

Apparently, there's not a lot of optimism for the Bills outside of Buffalo.

Well, I am a betting man. Actually, what you are referring to is the point spread. The "over/under" is the bet on combined points. I believe the Las Vegas Hilton has the Jets by 5.5 and the over/under at 42.5. I'm hoping to be in Vegas in the next couple weeks and I plan on placing a decent sized bet on the Bills. (I currently reside in Los Angeles) I bet on the games every week (usually with the aide of a bookie, since I'm out-of-state), but I almost never bet on the Bills. But, occasionally, I make an exception.

It is curious, though. Believe it or not, the Bills were favored over the Jets in week 9 last season by 2.5 points.

  16. I don't know about their relationship personally. But, professionally I think they're an amazing duo. I think that one of the most brilliant things Chan did last season was to move Spiller over to wide receiver. Now that they are both at starting positions at RB, they are the perfect compliment: two very different styles that work the same position in different ways. Giving Spiller the chance to work at wide receiver (interpreted by some, at the time, as an inditement of his abilities at RB) gave him an opportunity to improve his hands and catching ability, as well as improving his understanding of routes. Between the two of them, they have every aspect of being a running back down.

Freddie on the inside and CJ on the outside! Man, I can't wait for this season to start!!!

  17. Why is this kid getting so much attention? I really don't get it. Are people basing his ability to succeed in the NFL off of a trick shot video?

I don't think too many people are basing his ability to succeed on the video. But, the video, and its popularity, make for some good press during the offseason, hence all the attention.

I'm actually a little disappointed that he's left so quickly. 6'3", decent stats (albeit in div 3), and clearly a talented arm, I thought he would be a good addition to the practice squad as a back-burner project. I thought the same about Corp as well.

So, are we really looking at Fitz, Young, Thigpen? Things could be worse!

  18. That's why you see so many Rhode Scholars in the Hall of Fame, right? Dan Marino can barely read but if it they were the same age I'd take him over Fitz in a heartbeat.

Gimme a break. Look at the man's career numbers for what they show, not what you want to see. He hasn't had success yet. He hasn't reached the playoffs yet. He has only completed over 60% of his passes in one season out of 3 as a starting NFL QB.

Dam Marino can barely read? Are you high? Along with being a well respected football analyst, he is a successful businessman and active in numerous foundations including his own.

And, are you honestly suggesting that intelligence is not a requisite for being a good quarterback? Seriously?!

But if you really want to talk numbers, Fitz's passer rating for the first seven games of last season averaged out to 98.2. That's pretty good. "Career numbers" cannot simply be taken at face value. Most of the statistics we use in analyzing football are meaningless without taking into consideration numerous variables which include the performance of other players on the field and the situation they are playing in. If you're really making an argument that intelligence in a QB doesn't matter, I'll bet I could name 32 head coaches that would disagree with you.

  19. I'm pretty surprised that people on this thread are so easily willing to dismiss Fitz as an average (or worse) QB. Everyone on this forum should know his history and what makes him valuable. He is one of the smartest players in the league. (In fact, I read an article last year that cited him as one of the smartest professional athletes in all of sports.) His early success last season should be taken seriously, and the poor finish to last season should have been a surprise to no one (even without his busted up ribs). At the start of last season the number one criticism of the Bills was that they "lacked depth." We read this ad nausuem. Turns out that it was true. Fitz may not be the most athletic QB in the league. But, it takes a lot more than a good arm to be a great QB. Fitz has the intellect to be our franchise QB. I would take a smart QB with an average arm over a dumb QB with a great arm ANY DAY. I believe history would prove that wise. And, by any measure, Fitz is considered a genius.
