'Gin Mill' has to be a WNY expression. I've never heard it used anywhere else. Have any of you heard that expression elsewhere?

Probably came out of the 20's and prohibition???

Then again, isn't Buffalo stuck in the past?

    :lol::lol:

  2. Todd Maranovich & father as well.

Taking his key from Barry Bonds. Just as how he denies taking steroids, KW and KWII would have denied the motorcycle stunts until the cows come home. Until the surveillance tape proved otherwise; then they were forced to admit it. The thing with PR today is to lie straight-faced until, when the truth is found out 10 years later, there's nothing that can be done about it, the story is out of the public conciousness, and he's too rich to care. Reporting the truth is no longer a protection.

    Well said!

I am glad sports is the only place this happens.

  3. my grocery store only had Ham N Cheese, Peperoni Pizza, and those nasty Cheeseburger HotPockets ®

but Beef Taco??? damn that sounds good!  I wish my grocery store carried those.  I blame the Republicans.  its obvious they kept it out of my grocers freezer because they want to take away my right to choose

DING!  choice. oh yeah, so who do you think is hotter, the American Idol chick or the Apprentice chick?

    350959

Gotta admit... I like the "®", registered trademark thingy!

It shows good attention to detail...

  4. TD made my son fall off the "monkey bars" on Memorial Day and break his elbow... And of course it wasn't a simple break! One requiring the placement of two pins! What a dick!

He was also behind my healthcare provider closing their urgent care unit early... So I would have to wait 3 hours in an ER!

    :D

  5. Obviously, everyone knows Buffalo has some very serious economic and structural problems.  To give a little background on myself, I'm a 2003 University of Rochester grad with a BA in Political Science.  I have thought about maybe getting involved in government one day and would love to help out in Buffalo.  So for those who have moved away or those thinking about it, I have a few questions that maybe you could help me with.

    1) Why did you move out of Buffalo?

    2) Where did you go?

    3) How does your new home compare to Buffalo?

    4) If the econonmy and job market were stable would you move back?

    5) What suggestions to you have to improve the quality of life here?

Any feedback you have would be awesome and maybe together we can save the city, haha.  :D  Thanks.

I also graduated with a BA in political science/history, 1990 SUNY at Buffalo (UB).

    1. I worked for the Corps (Engineers) Buffalo District and I was going to be RIF'ed. I took the proactive approach and accepted a job with Rock Island District working out of the Arsenal (now garrison). My soon to be wife was attending the University of Illinois working on her master's. After a short time I transferred to a field site in Chicago, still here. My wife went back for her master's (after the MA in English) in Library and Information Science... She is now the director of a public Library close to home. Believe it or not, my wage scale (federal wage grade) is set to the Quad Cites area which is more than the Chicago area! <_< I think places like Deere (Moline) pull it up?

    2. First, Quad Cities (Davenport). Now, far south suburbs, Chicagoland. Still don't get the Cubs-Sox thing? Both Chicago... I root for both yet, would have to be pro-Sox if the unthinkable would happen (EL series)... eff the north side and all the congestion! Hate the Bears... I wonder why? ;) Don't mind the 'Hawks and Bulls.

    3. I view the area is the same in some regards, different in others... Very blue collar, mix "hillbilly"... Very diverse though, very easy to get around down here. Housing price very reasonable, would go for tons more in the southwest, west, north suburbs (my house was built in '95 for 150k... Would be well into the 200's in the aformentioned parts?) Taxes are about the same as New York. I pay more being just across the county border in the republican collar county, Will... If I could move my house 2 miles north into Cook and I would easily save about 2k off my 5k bill. I am pretty sure Cook is the only county in Illinois that levies taxes different between residential and commercial? Still pretty effed up, I also believe that Illinois has the most tax districts in the country?

    ... Stayin' on track.

    4. It isn't about the economy, if I found work I liked and enjoyed... Yes. My wife also. Northeast IL, northwest Indiana is where we "landed"... After all, I do consider it exile? :D

    5. Tough question! I will add humor... Quality of life?:D Look at all the fat-arses around... Seems people are eating well?

Buffalo, IMO, is a victim of its own geographical demise... It has become to far off the beaten path. It reminds me of the situation that Park Forest, IL (first planned community in the US) is in here. The thing is to not forget its past yet, let go of the monolithic side of that past? How is that done? A lot of services and institutions that are enjoyed have to fall by the way-side? Obviously, it is easier in a suburb of under 30k. Quite a quandry?

  6. I don't have a good way to get rid of the plant, but I have a good way to get rid of the rash.  But it takes some balls.  Itch up the rash so it's nice and raw.  Then pour bleach over it.  It's excrutiating at first, but the itch goes away and the ras will clear up in a couple of days.  I used to use this technique when I used to work outside.  I found the pain preferable to sitting there itching for days.

    Wow!

They have "ivy block" now... After work, I would take a hot soapy shower to get the oil off... Wash all tools and clothes too!

When the leaves are red and waxy... LOOK OUT!

Take a machete and hack at the vine (around the tree or what not).

Ivy love shaddy, wet areas. Make it sunny and dry and it should get rid of it?

  7. Actually, that is what I am doing today around the site. I have a lot of it also in my backyard.

Monsanto (RoundUp) makes a product for poison ivy... It works great. The bottle comes pre-mixed with attached sprayer... No mess... I use it at home.

At work... We just use Round-Up and mix it in a sprayer... I got the luxury of cruising around with either the electric Cushman or haulster type Cushman.

The stuff I used at home (above) works great... Just go easy on the area since it seemed to migrate away from my fence and onto my grass a little!

I am not immune to it! I used to do hydrographic survey work along the Upper Mississippi River and the stuff was nasty. When "cutting line" with a machete, you would always come into contact with it.

Supposedly, your first exposure doesn't affect you... It may get worse with more exposure. My kid (don't ask... under my wife's supervision, he was playing in back of the wood pile and making "boats" out of the leaves!) didn't show signs of outbreak for 2 weeks!

    Hope this helps!

  8. Actually, I'm just bustin' balls. But it's funny, because everytime you turn around in Florida, some sex offender is raping, killing and burying a little girl...in Detroit a person can't even go to a basketball game without fear of getting their ass kicked by one of the players...but one guy gets videotaped running over a person in Southern California, and everyone is like "Oh, fuggin' LA!"

    346744

    What about Rodney King?

    Just bustin' you 'testes' also...

    Peace.

  9. WTF?

Does everybody in LA walk around with a video camera? Never know when something is gonna happen?

Video shot by a man at the scene was later broadcast on news programs. It showed the suspect's front-wheel-drive compact car -- its front end wedged up against the rear of another car stopped on the street -- with its drive wheels spinning forward and smoke coming out of the front end.

  10. Well since you work in defense, tell me about the lack of armour for Humvees and the like.  A lot of folks say they support the miltary, yet there seems to be little outrage over the fact that our soldiers went into a hostile theatre without proper equipment.

Now it's my understanding (from sources like the NY Times and PBS) that there is a philosophical battle between Donald Rumsfeld and the brass at the Pentagon.  Rumsfeld seems to be pushing for a "quick strike" style of Army.  Smaller, lighter, smarter, etc.  But that vision doesn't mesh with the reality on the ground in Iraq.

Also, was there a miscalculation, either by the White House, or military planners, about how the Iraq invasion would play out after the fall of Saddam?

I could go on forever with questions.  I'm really curious to get your take, since you are on the inside.  In a nutshell, I feel that the entire Iraq campaign was started for the wrong reasons, not planned for the aftermath, and now we're in deep with young men and women losing their lives.

But that's my opinion.  I want to get your side.

I want to know if the "away game" is working?

    Only "experts" need to reply.

  11. Being overweight gets you two extra hours of PT each day...AFTER work.

Civilians have no clue. None. And yet they PRETEND to know enough to second-guess the military. Sickening.

My boss is a Col. Where does that put me?

You'd be amazed how "old school" this place is.

    <_<

  12. The reason the placeholder would be named in that manner is because I had stacks of photos of golfers, but only one appeared to have blonde hair (B&W photos).  If it had been merely "golfer" I wouldn't have a clue as to which photo I was thinking would work in that space and would be formatting the page all over again.

Maybe it's because I've had the task of formatting a yearbook before, but if there is something that's unique and easily observed that allows you to identify that particular photo from the stacks of hundreds in front of you, you use it, especially if you don't know the name of the person in the photo. Frankly, I just don't see any racism in that.

Also, their faculty advisor might be like ours was.  He only give us editors his classroom for 1 hour a day after school - and if we had practice, work, or whatever other commitment a high schooler might have, that was another day lost in trying to pull it together.

Every time I look at my senior yearbook I'm reminded of the pride that we editors had when it finally went to print. It truly was a massive undertaking.

Again thanks. I hope they explain it that way. It begins to change my view on the story.

  13. That is, at a very basic level, totally stupid and ignorant.  The Constitution outlines government powers, not civil rights.  The assumption is, was, and should always be that anything not specifically permitted to the government by the Constitution is not permitted the government, not that it's allowed by implication of ommission.  Enforcing that standard is NOT making law, it's following 200 years of legal precedent.  Regardless of what your views on abortion or contraception happen to be, the Constitution by ommission excludes those from the federal government's purview, and the courts have ruled as such for decades.

And of course, you've demonstrated a very basic ignorance of every other single topic you've ever posted on under whatever name you've made the post.  Why change now?

    Somebody took ethics training?

  14. The fillibuster is important in times like today. You have a spilt almost down the middle... Yet, one party controls all three houses.

The difference between this is under 10 million people.

I would never want to see it go, even if things were the other way.

There are what 50 some million constituents that need it?

If things were lopsided... I could not see the fillibuster actions.

Too much is at stake for an evenly divided country.
