Interesting topic from WGR this morning.  Jeremy White was talking abou the biggest whiffs in Buffalo sports history since 2000.  He used both the Bills and Sabres but for the sake of this discussion we’ll focus on just the Bills.

Remember a whiff doesn’t necessarily have to be all draft busts.  It more about getting some of the really big and important decisions completely wrong.  Also it’s important to consider the negative impact on the organization.  For example, signing Shawn Merriman was a whiff, but it didn’t really impact the team that much.

Here are my choices and I keep everything current so this is only since 2000.

Hiring Rex Ryan - this was JW’s top choice and mine as well.  Rex did some major damage in Buffalo.  Terrible hire.

Trading for Sammy Watkins - this was an agressive move by a bad GM that backfired.  Whaley basically pushed all his chip to the table and gambled with this move on both Sammy and EJ.  He’s now out of a job.  This move was so reckless it drives me nuts

    Re-signing Ryan Fitzpatrick to a long-term deal

Prospector Buddy Nix thought he found gold...except it was fool’s gold.  The quick decision to extend Fitz, committed the team to a QB that was a fringe starter and resulted in them passing on other choices like drafting Russell Wilson.  This was the start of QB purgatory.

    Drafting CJ Spiller

This was a foolish move when the team had 2 good RB’s in Fred and Marshawn Lynch.  CJ also never turned out to be much as a starting RB.

    Marv Levy as GM

A terrible and selfish choice by Ralph Wilson.  This move would ramp the drought into high gear.

Lets hear some of your choices!

Aside from Jamarcus Russel  of Raider fame, Aaron Maybin is hands down the biggest bust in NFL history, across all teams.  He even put out a super-douchey rap song that sucked balls.  It's just mind numbing to see a team draft a guy with virtually no college experience at 8th overall.

Ughh....  the thought of hearing his name called that day just made me sick all over again, I need to go have a dump.

Clearly the biggest surprise of Round #1 was the Browns pick #4 going for Denzel Ward instead of Bradley Chubb. Chances are the Browns were still hoping for Barkley but basically knew they were getting Ward the moment the GIants made the Barkley pick. If we had known the Browns were looking at CB at #4 (it has been widely reported they wanted a CB to allow Garrett to get to the QB), would you be willing to trade Tredavious White for the #4 pick? Not that I am not high on White (I think he will make the Pro Bowl this year if he stays injury free).

Why for the Browns: White is closer to a sure thing than Ward and still has three years on the rookie scale (at a lower salary than #4).

Why for the Bills:  1. Guaranteed to get Josh Allen  2. Would have likely gotten WARD at #12 and likely still gotten Edmunds for #22 and #65 at 16. So Bills end up with Allen, Ward and Edmunds instead of Allen, White and Edmunds. All things equal,  I prefer the latter - but remember in this trade Bills get to keep their 2 #2s and get an extra year on the rooki scale for their CB. So would you rate Ward, #53 and #56 as higher than Tre' White?

Clearly Bills had interest in Ward - they even hosted him at OBD.

    typo corrected in bold

I wouldn't have traded any picks for any of the QBs that were going to be left on the board after Mayfield and Darnold.  My plan was to hope that Rosen/Allen drop to 12, if not, then BPA, if Rosen/Allen Still on the board at 22, great, if not BPA.  I would have then selected Mason Rudolph with my late second round pick(over-pick here, but not worth the risk with the 3rd round picks being a bit on the late side).

The Allen pick is growing on me, and obviously I have no choice here, but I felt all along that Rudolph and Allen were on equal ground, and Rosen being the most accurate, and balanced of the three the Bills would have a shot at.  During draft time I didn't care too much that Rosen might be a head case(See Jay Cutler), but after the draft, mu gut tells me he would have been a mistake.

My biggest fear, as with all Bills fans is that you can't teach accuracy, or more-so, instinctive accuracy with regards to Allen, but as far as a guy who has a lot of character and would embrace Buffalo as did Jim Kelly, I feel Josh Allen was the right pick after all.(even with me calling him Paxton Lynch 2.0 pre-draft)

yes, I waffled, Homey don't usually play 'dat.

  4. I will go on record admitting I didn't see enough Of Josh Allen's work to compare him to Paxton Lynch in all honesty.  I also made it known that I wanted Rosen for having seen more of his tape, but I have no effect on who the Bills draft, so after seeing some more film, I am at the very least more optimistic on what Allen can become, and far more disappointed in how Rosen carries himself publicly.

I'm not pulling a full 180 on who I was hoping for in the draft, as I really wanted them to stay put in the 1st round and take Mason Rudolph with the late 2nd round pick, but now that it's all said and done, I am not totally opposed to the pick.  I just hope he can develop and justify the move up.  What I can say tha's growing on me is his demeanor and work ethic.

    EDIT:

Let me clarify - If they were determined to move up in the draft, which I was against, I wanted Rosen.  If they stayed put and kept all their picks, I wanted Rudolph.  I felt like Rudolph was going to be the poor mans Allen.

Your countless threads with unsubstantiated rumors, wild theories, erratic mood swings, loose connections and hot takes have made these last few days truly special!  In no particular order.....

    - Thank you to every guy who had a chance encounter with a Delta Sonic employee with a cousin who works at a Best Buy in Buffalo that had a big scoop.

    - Big thanks to the guy whose district regional sales manager knows Russ and believes we may draft a QB this year.

    - Thank you to everyone who follows the Incarcerated Steves and Prison Bobs of the twittersphere for keeping us up to date on all the latest fiction.

    -  Big thanks to the guys that shared every mock draft on the internet and had meltdowns based on the mock results.

    - Thanks to the peeps who are "so f@#$ing done with this team if the pick _______________!"

    - Thank you to the guy who cruises the Brown's reddit page and uncovered the 26 team trade scenario that lands us a top 3 pick with only giving up Jerry Hughes.

    - Thanks to everyone who started a reaction thread for every permutation and draft outcome.

    - Thank you to everyone who reminded us how many holes there are to fill and for those wise men among us that reminded us that it really isn't about filling all the holes but finding the one hole that you think you might be able to spend the rest of your life with.

Without all you emotionally unstable, gullible schmucks who find authority in the strangest of places none of this would have been possible!!!

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay released their mock draft yesterday.  This would be a pretty bad scenario for the Bills.  Drafting Tremaine Edwards at 12, McGlinchy at 22, and then Mason Rudolph in the 2nd round.   If this happens I will start a new thread about why the 2018 draft was a fail for the Bills.

The one thing is - Kiper and McShay do not have trades in their mock draft and are selecting players in their spots as of yesterday

I would not be disappointed with Mason Rudolph in the least.  Watch his film.  You'll wonder why he's not being talked about more.  I'd be willing to bet good money that if the Bills pass on him, the Cheatriots pick him up, and he ends up being good.

You are clairvoyant then ? We know the Bills need a QB. How do you know which QBs will pan out and which won't? Shouldn't you be on an NFL FO staff ? Make a career out of picking lottery numbers etc.

Wow, attacking my personal view.  You must feel so proud of yourself for such a clever reply.  One question though... I was unaware that I needed to apply for a job for an NFL front office position to pick lottery numbers, I guess I was doing it wrong this whole time, do you have an application I can borrow?

Can't wait for Beane to tell us what draft pick they are trading up to.

Hopefully we pick at 12 and 22.  I'd like to see him stand tall in the face of all the media hype and fan screaming for a move up.  useless to move up when you have picks in the first round, and holes everywhere on your roster.

  9. There are several busts just waiting to happen in this QB class, with no guarantees on any of them developing.  I like that we have 12 and 22.  This team has so many other holes to fill than just QB.  Whaley certainly would have sold the farm and then drafted anther EJ Manuel.  Not every Hall of Famer comes from the first round, or even the top 10 picks.  Ahhemm...  ever heard of a guy called Jim Kelly?

I really hope they don't move up.  There are plenty to have at 12.

Projection from Great Blue North website.....Bills trade 12 and 22, 2019 first and 2nd rd picks as well as 2020 2nd rounder for Cleveland's no. four pick in the first in order to take Baker Mayfield.    This after Darnold, Allen and Rosen go 1-2-3.

Would you pull that trigger or stay put?

    Stay put.

Josh Allen has the look of what you want in a QB.  A big guy who can throw it through a brick wall.   Good character- not a butt-head.   What bothers me about him is that he played at a low level of competition and did poorly when facing teams in the top 50.  I wonder if he ever played against more than a handful of NFL-quality defensive backs in his 2 year college career. (Reedly JC for  first two years).  Usually, you want to see the guy do good against the top competition, or if he is at a lower level, he should dominate.  I don't see that he did that.  Let's look at his 2017 results and opponents.

The Mountain West compiled a .436 winning percentage in nonconference play, the third-worst clip in the FBS.    It is the 7th ranked conference in the ncaa.

Hawaii, New Mexico and San Jose State all mustered a single conference triumph, and Nevada joined the trio with a 3-9 record or worse.

Notice the QB rating against Iowa (29) and Oregon (6.9)    Fairly good teams.   ouch.

So his record against ranking was

    opponent   no.     record

    1-25              1        0-1

    26-50            2        0-2

    51-100          5       4-1

    101-150       1       1-0
    151 +          4         3-1

I didn't triple check the numbers, so don't nitpick.  Allen did NOT play against top notch opponents.  In the film that you see on him, he is not throwing against too many DB's who will be in the pros.   I'm not a expert, but I don't see consistent success against top notch competition.  I don't see him playing and succeeding against good playeers.    I would be concerned about draft him as a project.

I feel like he'll be another Paxton Lynch

  12. I really hope he finishes pre-season as the starter, I really do.  I loved what he did last pre-season, and how well he was playing in the snowy Colts game.  McBeane is not going to sell the farm for a QB, get that notion out of your heads, none of these QBs at the top are a lock to be elite, none of them, period.  So start warming up the idea of McCarron or Peterman now so you're not all jumping off the ledge come September.

No, he doesn't suck, yes, he was a rookie, and after 1.3 games...really????  a late round pick and you wanted instant Joe Montana, just add water???  it's ridiculous how people crucify a player's career around here.
