1/18 Texans @ Chiefs divisional playoff thread
appoo replied to Steptide's topic in The Stadium Wall
Refs wrecked this game. Those bad calls wore out the Tesans D. The refs allowing Spagnulo's D to hold and interfere while calling Houston for holding completely got into Stroud;s head, and strangled the offense. Just a completely unlevel playing field. -

it's amazing how easy this game is when you get to play with an easier rule book than your opponents -
Personally, this Ravens matchup is my "McDermott Game."

The 2021 Chiefs having a worse DVOA than the Bills should tell you how important that metric is for the playoffs. It's a tremendous regulr season measure, an d even then I'm guessing the DVOA's of those games were pretty damn close -

There has been exactly ONE game where the Buffalo Bills have underperfomed in a playoff game. That was against the Bengals in the divisional round. A game where they had a huge amount of injuries defense, and mentally they were seemingly broken. Josh Allen played like ass. Stef diggs played like ass. The defense struggled to stay in the game (and they did barely btw - 17 - 10 half way through the 3rd Q). Everything fell flat and the Bills played well under their talent level. Every other playoff game in the McDermott era the Bills showed up and played well and mostly played to their talent levels. That is the definition of being a good playoff team. As a coach all you can do is do your best to prepare youor team to play well, and then the rest is up to fate and luck. You can't control for Pat Mahomes playing like a football god. You can't control for the Chiefs having a flat out better roster in 2021. You can't control for having the entire gut of your defense not being available in 2024 and the chiiefs having an elite defense. You give credit/critique of the things that your coach actually has control over. That's 2022 you can attack him for how the last 13 seconds of that chiefs game played out. But not really for the other losses -

Doug Pederson and Nick Foles won a super bowl against Bill Belichak, Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. How does that play into the narrative? yes. -

Y'all get frustrated at HOF dudes doing HOF ***** against a Bills D that's mostly injured, and project those frustrations on to McDermott. IMAGINE TRYING TO DEFEND JOSH ALLEN ON A HEATER!! WITH ANY DEFENSE. I wish more of you watched more sports. This is like claiming wins is a QB stat, or that Jim Kelly ISNT a HOF QB because he never won a SB. So much of winning a SB comes down to luck, health and who's HOF player is going bonkers. The best team in NFL history lost the SB because a good but nor great QB delievered a ***** Helmet catch to a WR who's the eptiome of a replacement level guy in this league. But y'all keep wanting to blame Mcdermott for getting his team in the position to beat elite teams, and then having luck and injuries and HOF players doing HOF things go against him weve already proven this. McDermott is already proven. Done and dusted. Period. -

Sean McDermott is at this point one of the 5 best HC's in the NFL. Andy Reid, Sean McVay, Jon Harbaugh, McDermott, Jim Harbaugh -

Any Ray Davis injury (concussion) updates?
appoo replied to Desert Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall
Going back to the earlier discussion...if you've ever played the game in pads, then you know that kind of hit is always a possibility, and you either accept or you quit. As a WR/RB you also know that you're going to get hit, period. Part of the game, and you know you gotta stretch out no matter what, and you also know that every QB is occasionally going to throw that kind of ball. If you want to blame someone, blame the sport in general. -
Another disaster by McDs defense in the playoffs

They’re not because the Ravens have two great TEs, a pair of really good WRs (assuming Zay Flowers is healthy) and a QB who’s faster than any backer in the league while ALSO being absolutely deadly from the pocket They’re gonna need Taron Johnson and Matt Milano and Terel Bernard to have the best takes of their lives -

Yup! I mean we got Lamar Jackson coming up here next weekend. If he’s zoning out then we don’t have a hope in hell of containing him, and there’s not a defense in the league that can, I don’t care how good you are at scheming. At that point you’re just hoping Josh Allen is on one and you just create an 1-2 openings that you capitalize on, and the ravens defense is gonna hope for the same thing -

Let me ask this question. This bills skill weapons, we have two of the best at their position in Shakir and Cook. Everyone else is probably good at best, with maybe the best set tackles in the league. So there’s good talent there. Given that, when Josh Allen is playing well is there a scheme or defense in the entire league that contain or even slow down much less stop that offense? Why is there an expectation that when you have talented offenses led by HOF level QBs who are playing well, that McDermott should have a scheme capable of containing or even slow down much less stopping them? In the playoffs against great offenses, the barometer is not going to be how well you stop them. It’s if you can create the occasional opportunities to create an opening for your own HOF QB to take advantage of. A punt here and there, stopping them for FGs, a rare turnover…that’s what you hope for. -

If you think the bills defense failed against the chiefs this past season, that’s a you issue and not a McDermott issue -

Like yall attacking McDermott. So why not Beane when he’s signed exactly one all pro type of talent through free agency? Almost exclusively this defense has been developed by McDermott and his staff, and rarely gotten standout performers through free agency. Von was the only big time signing or trade for this defense. Everyone else has been a role player outside the draft. And yet the Bills D has been perhaps the most consistently good for about 7-8 years now -

Any asshat coach can get lucky with their talent and have a great year. Elite coaches have runs that McDermott has had since coming to Buffalo -

He’s already over and well beyond the hump. There is no hump to overcome. Hes proven himself to be a great coach. You measure NFL coaches on longevity of success more so random luck with injuries and how they do against Hall of Fame talent in single games -

And? He doesn’t design the offense and he doesn’t create the offensive philosophy. Having an MVP talented QB does not guarantee 14 wins. plus that defense doesn’t have a single blue chipper that you’d expect to push into the first all pro team year in year out. Yet when healthy they’ve been effective this season -

Getting this current roster to 14 wins is some hall of fame *****. They are easily outplaying their talent level this season and this man continues to get attacked and fired by fans. You can give him the Andy Reid/Mike Tomlin lifetime contract at this point IMO -

the bills literally a walking MASH unit against cinncy and were bad on both sides of the ball that game with an exhausted team. I think my problem with this stuff is yall forget there’s another team out there. Joe Burrow - in that game - had Tee Higgins, Chase, one of the best slots in the league really good RB and a. Good TE…and again a future hall of fame QB. But your expectation is for Sean McDermott to stop that offense? With bunch of backups? Or stop Mahomes and Andy Reid and Travis Kelce and Tyreke hill when they go GOAT mode? And ACTUALLY containing Mahomes and Andy reid while literally pulling dudes off the street to start at linebacker? Its combination of hugely unfair expectations, refusing to see the larger story, and then not even appreciating what happens in a game. Like last year the Bills D put Allen in a position to win at the end. -

Also, Apparently Sean McDermott is the only coach to have his defense struggle with Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow -
Some legendary spelling here

Keon is there to make contested catches, with Surtain the Broncos generally don't move him around, but rahter just take away whatever part of the field he works on. Gonna be an interesting chess match up which I think gets adjustments drive to drive All the metrics suggest otherwise, but this is also why they play the game. I think the Bills ends up winning 24 - 10 or something like that
-
Can see this turning into a bit of a slog as the Broncos have an EXCELLENT defense and have the potential to smother Buffalo's WRs

He was going up against Riq Woolen a in some of those highlites, including the TD
