Impressions from second QB-WR session -QB Report

I just got back from the second (and final) throwing session of the Combine and I can tell you this... Oklahoma State's Zac Robinson will be rising up draft boards with his performance today.

With highly touted passers Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow and Dan LeFevour all sitting out the throwing session, Robinson was among several passers who took advantage of the spotlight.

Robinson showed good footwork and balance dropping back -- a question mark considering he's coming from a spread offense -- and was consistently accurate to all levels of the field. He zipped intermediate slants and dig routes and showed plenty of drive on the deep out. As a perfect example of why quarterbacks should throw at the Combine, Robinson scored points with scouts on the accuracy of his deep ball (good trajectory, outside shade) despite none of his deep passes actually being caught by his receivers.

Arguably the second most impressive quarterback on this day was surprisingly Ole Miss' Jevan Snead. Snead was as accurate on this day as I've ever seen him -- hitting receivers in stride consistently and showing off his good arm strength. The problem with Snead is that he knows he has a good arm and he relies on it. He carries the ball a bit low and has a very quick release, but he rarely stepped into his throws today, relying almost exclusively on his arm. Snead has intriguing tools -- and he clearly helped his cause today by showing them -- but quarterback coaches I've spoken with in the past have pointed this out as an issue.

Cincinnati's Tony Pike was inconsistent today. The opposite of Snead, Pike has steps into his throws and has a nice over-the-top delivery, which is enhanced by his 6-5, 243 pounds. However, he sprayed the ball today, especially when throwing outside the numbers. He got better as the day went on and didn't do anything to lower his stock, but he certainly didn't seize the opportunity, either.

Under the radar quarterbacks Thaddeus Lewis (Duke), Riley Skinner (Wake Forest) and John Skelton (Fordham) showed why they are rated as they are. Lewis was inconsistent to most levels of the field, except on the deep ball - where his wounded ducks forced receivers to slow and, at times even stop their routes, to wait for the ball. Skelton was wildly erratic, especially early in the gauntlet drills. His high and wide throws consistently forced receivers to adjust, throwing off their balance and timing during drills.

I like what I have been hearing about this Robinson kid. If it's true that he has an accurate deep ball, then I'm in. Good footwork and balance, accuracy and a nice deep ball. Sign me up. We should take him in about the fourth round or so. Whether or not he is a day one starter, I wouldn't mind taking the time to develop him.

  2. If we could be assured that McClain would become as good a player as Patrick Willis is, then I'd be in favor of taking him in the right scenario.

Our nightmare scenario is that the top two NTs, the top 4 OTs, and the top 2 QBs will be gone by the time the Bills draft at #9 and that no other team would want to trade up for our pick.

The names I see all of you reciting in this scenario are McClain, Berry, Bryant, and Dan Williams.

I agree. The only reason I would take any of the aforementioned is in the worst case scenario you describe. Personally, I would McClain. He should be a force that will help us in defending the run.

  3. This thread is dumb because we're not taking Bryant. Nix seems to be a pretty sharp guy so an argument is moot for either case. Sorry but it's not happening and yes I'll wager on it.

Agreed. There is a snowballs chance in hell we take him.

  4. yeah that is an insane average. Maybe cause the defenses were so focused on the run game?

Read interview w/ him once, said his chances were rare, so had to make best of them. he could have transferred to another program that passed more when Paul Johnson came in, but stayed. classy.

here's stats, yep 25 yd ave...

had 46 receptions for 1,154 yards and eight touchdowns last season. During his three-year career at Tech, Thomas caught 120 passes for 2,339 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Good point on defenses focusing on the run.

I like that he states that he had to make the most of his chances. That shows he is a dedicated player and shouldn't be a disappointment. I mean if he makes the most of all his opportunities, maybe he could turn a short pass from one of our current dismal QBs into a big play. :wallbash:

  5. Wouldn't mind having all 3.... And before anyone adds the we already have a 30 year old RB on the team, Freddy has much less wear and tear then Jones, don't get me wrong though Jones is an absolute warrior out there and would be great to have in the rotation if his carries are monitored. Excellent redzone RB :wallbash: Probably wants too much $ though

I gotta agree with your assessment of Freddy, but I'm no so sure about bringing in Thomas. Yes, he is a good back, but he will probably want a fat contract after last year and I would like the Bills spending their money on other positions at this time.

  6. he seems like a quality player and person, but think he'll go higher than 3rd, and think we need to go w/ NT for our second pick.

His college stats are lower than they could be, since GT plays flexbone

I saw someone post elsewhere that his average yards per catch in GT was 25+

If that is true, then considering the flexbone offense he was in he is a great player. So, yes he most likely will be taken in the 2nd but with that foot injury I think there is a possibility he slips to the 3rd and we might take him. However we should focus on other positions so in reality it most likely will not happen.

  7. This kid has got Randy Moss written all over him. He's gonna fall to 18th or something because he took a free cell phone and someone's gonna walk away with the steal of the draft. I'll take your NCAA rules violations and raise you an invite to watch some of his highlights on youtube. He's built like TO in his prime with more speed.

And when those violations turn into suspensions there won't be a highlight reel. I'm not questioning his talent or ability, just his focus and desire. He doesn't seem to be that serious, but hey maybe he grows up. I just don't think the Bills should be making that kind of risk when there are bigger problems to take care of in the draft.

  8. Dude he's a kid. Bruce Smith fell asleep at the wheel drunk in the middle of an intersection after he was already retired. Dominik Hasek got a DUI by my house going 70 in a 35 when he was winning Hart Trophies. Ooooh I'm scared about an NCAA rules violation...

But showing up late to games? I don't want to have someone who is supposed to be my new stud WR not showing up on Sunday...

  9. I'll be honest I didn't realize Reed's #'s were that sad until now, but with those type of stats, why was he even on the field, IDK, but I have to believe that either hardy or johnson can do better than that. Not to mention both are much better red zone options simply because of size, with JR and TO out of the way these 2 will have every opportunity to play with the first team and make plays, look for hardy and nelson to play inside and run the crosses while lee and stevieJ are on the corners, it really doesnt sound bad to me, lots of potential to do damage, esp in the red zone

I'm glad you brought up Nelson. I think he will turn into a great receiving threat at TE before too long. If his blocking improves then he's gonna be really good.

  10. Not many. How come everybody has suddenly abandoned the "best player available" theory? What if the Ravens were like, "yeah this Ray Lewis guy looks pretty good, but linebacker isn't our greatest need?" If Dez Bryant looks like a complete beast, a franchise-changing guy, you gotta take him.

I don't think that WRs can be franchise changing guys without a competent QB to throw to them. I'm not knocking Bryant, just the idea of the Bills investing a 1st rounder on him given their current situation. And yes, I know that Reed and Owens won't be back but we have greater needs to address with our #1, like the offensive line for one.

  11. It looks like he can throw the ball 50 yards with little effort. His competition was not elite. If he has what it takes it will still take 3 years for him to develop. Can we wait three years for him and watch Fitz, TE or Brohm without mass suicides? Probably not.

Sounds like he has upside so I guess you are right in asking if we have the time to wait for him to develop. My guess is that we will have to wait anyway because I don't foresee a franchise QB emerging for the Bills THIS season. So that being said, if there is a guy like Skelton with enough upside that Nix/Gailey like, I wouldn't mind taking him in a mid-late round and developing him.

P.S. I wouldn't count out Brohm. However, that depends on if Gailey can determine anything from what little film there must be of him.

  12. Another veteran linebacker who is expected to be available is Adalius Thomas. He prefers to play the outside where he can rush the passer, but has played inside as well with the Patriots.

He'd probably come a lot cheaper than Dansby. Plus I'm sure he'd love to hand it to Belichick twice every season since they had their falling out.

    Isn't Banta-Cain also a FA? I wouldn't mind signing him.

  13. I know everyone didn't throw at the combine, but I thought this Skelton kid looked the best throwing the ball. He's 6'5" and the ball jumps off his hand....quickly. Being the size he is and the way he throws it, he reminded me of Bledsoe. Check out the Youtube on him (hope the link works).

Looked like he moved around pretty well too. Is he the second coming? No. Did he play against anyone? No. I'm just saying he looked good at the combine. Tony Pike....not so much.

    -1

I was never a fan of Bledsoe. However I know next to nothing about this Skelton kid so can't say too much

  14. ok, so you really dont think Hardy or Johnson could average 39 catches for 489 yds/yr?1 td per yr avg?

Josh reed never lived up to his billing comin out of LSU, 311 catches 3575 yds 10 tds in 8 yrs, doesn't sound like we will be missing much.

    +1

I have faith that at least one of these two guys if not both will have a break out season next year.
