  1. The question at the end kills me. "Should Fitzpatrick be in the conversation with Sanchez and Chad Henne as the No. 2 quarterback in the AFC East behind Tom Brady?" Even though I think he's overrated and would rather have Fitz, I get Sanchez being ranked ahead of Fitz by most because the Jets are a good team in a large market. But Henne has never been in the conversation as #2 in the AFCE, and the way it is worded makes it sound like Fitz wasn't fit to carry his jock until this week.

    My thoughts exactly.

  2. 1 - Marcell Dareus - Dareus has seen all of his action with the first defense. It's been uncommon for him to be pushed off of the line. He's shown that he can wreck the havoc that he was drafted to cause. Lining up next to Kyle Williams only helps this guy. He's going to make an impact this year.

2 - Aaron Williams - He's been working with the second team for the most part. He is as physical as advertised. Very good tackler. Has been beaten in coverage for a number of big plays. In the game against Chicago he showed that he could bounce back from a mistake and make a play - not getting down on himself keeps him in the game. With no injuries, I think he'll mostly see work in dime packages and occasionally in a nickle package.

3 - Kelvin Sheppard - He's seen very limited action this preseason, his only game coming in the last one against Detroit. He looked to be very instinctive and was around the ball a lot. I didn't notice him much in pass coverage situations, so I won't comment on that. I liked how he hit guys, seemed really aggressive with his contact.

4 - Da'Norris Searcy - He saw a lot of work with 2nd and 3rd string guys. He also had a lot of opportunities for returning punts. I was not impressed with his punt returning ability, and would rather he focus on his safety play. I though he hit well, and was better in run support than pass coverage.

4b - Chris Hairston - He started off injured and didn't see time until the last two games, most of the game vs Detroit. He looked solid with the second unit in Jax, and ended that game at LT. He played all of his time at LT in Detroit. Despite the poor performance of the unit against Detroit, he was very good. He had one mental mistake and gave up an easy sack. There was another sack towards the end of the first half that came from his side, which was caused by Johnny White missing the inside blitz and Thigpen rolled out into the sack. He seems to stick onto his guy when he makes contact.

5 - Johnny White - Hasn't seen much time because of his injury in Denver. Has played mostly with the 2nd and 3rd units. Looks like a very good runner. He can truck a bit and make a guy miss. He didn't see very good blocking from the 2nd or 3rd lines. He missed a block on a blitz against Detroit that lead to a sack, but later picked up that same blitz very well.

6 - Chris White - He's seen time mostly with the 3rd unit, and some with the second. Looks to be ok in pass coverage, and hits well. He doesn't always get good position in run defense and doesn't get off blocks all that great. With the number of bodies at ILB, I think he gets cut but put on the PS.

7 - Justin Rogers - Injured and saw little action. Played a lot in the last game. He showed some skill returning the ball, and from what I saw had decent coverage. If the Bills keep a 6th DB, it's him, otherwise he's another PS candidate.

7b - Michael Jasper - Has been healthy this preseason, which wasn't a common occurrence with the drafted. He is as raw as expected. He's a big body, and when he uses proper technique he does very well at the point of attack. He does seem to tire quickly, and when he gets tired he stands up. I seriously doubt he makes the roster, but I would love to see him on the PS as well.

Excellent synopsis. This is really spot on.

  3. I was pleasently surprised by Hairston last week, and I think Chan was as well.

    Hairston to play LT Thurs.

Bills fourth-round pick Chris Hairston played mainly right tackle in training camp. He missed some practice time with an undisclosed injury as well as the first two preseason games. But he played extensively against Jacksonville at both right and left tackle and fared well. Head coach Chan Gailey intends to get him a lot more time in Thursday’s game, but only on one side.

“He played left tackle in college so he had a comfort level at left tackle,” said Gailey in reference to Hairston playing on the right and left side last Saturday. ”I think it’s worked out well for him to be able to play both. The way we sit right now he needs to know both so it helps us from a depth perspective as well. We’ll keep him at left this week just so he can hone in on that for an extended period of time and see how he does.”

It makes one wonder if Hairston is gaining an edge on the all important swing tackle job behind Demtrius Bell and Erik Pears. If so, Hairston’s performance Thursday night is of huge significance.

It also sounds like Sheppard will get significant playing time tomorrow (http://www.buffalobills.com/media-center/videos/Kelvin-Sheppard-on-Making-His-NFL-Debut/e9044c46-3929-4617-897d-a62aef182feb)

Can't wait for the real season to start...

  4. I would bet anyone that if you get Gailey to say who his second favorite WR is on this team, it would be Roscoe. Chan always talks glowingly about Roscoe, and he doesn't throw around superlatives. There is no way Parrish is getting released, unless it is not Gailey's decision.

That reminds me, I meant to post Gailey's Monday interview: http://www.buffalobills.com/media-center/videos/Chan-Gailey-Monday-Update/0b36204a-30ee-4bfd-a434-31e6a52c3b81.

Upon hearing Chan speak (talks about him near the end), I'm convinced that Roscoe is very much in his plans.

  5. You may be right.

Everyone who is all upset over Thigpen's preseason needs to remember that he had no pre-preseason with the Bills due to the lockout. He's only been with the team a few weeks.

Also, they should go back to the late 1980s before Frank Reich played in a real game. He looked horrible in preseason & was so bad the Bills left him unprotected in Plan B free agency before the 1989 season & nobody wanted to sign him.

Until the backup QB plays with & against starters, his performance in preseason games can't properly be evaluated by fans. Fortunately, the coaches see these guys every day and have a lot more information in evaluating players. That's one reason that you can't use preseason performances to latch onto a guy or write him off because there's so much more going on that we never will see.

That's an excellent point about Reich. I think thigpen is a fine backup who, with more practice time, can step in and give us a chance if need be. I liked the way he played on the chiefs in 08, he's got some gumption.

  6. I've never heard one expert or true NFL fan say Drew Brees "sucked" at any point in his career. They challenged his height & his arm strength at the NFL level, but nobody ever claimed he sucked.

I've lived on the central coast for Brees' whole career. There were a significant amount of fans and local commentators that, if I recall correctly, were very much of the opinion that he sucked. It was cool that he eventually proved them wrong, when he came together for the chargers that team was dangerous...
