This. I'm done throwing seasons away in the name of "development."

Yep! And while the last 14 years aren't EJs fault, and I don't hold the last 14 years against him, we have to good of a team to throw away in the name of EJs development.

Now, that last paragraph is NOT bashing EJ. If you're upset about it then go back and read it. I'm not saying EJ sucks. I'm saying if he struggles..."if"...

  2. I voted until he struggles but I don't like this poll or any poll. It's a sliding scale thing... If it's clear that we just simply have the WORST QB in the NFL and he is scared and can't hit the broad side of a barn then pull him. If he's having ups and downs then don't...

Maybe a better way to look at it is, 'do we no matter what let this season ride on the development of EJ Manuel.' And the answer to that is no.

Can you please tell me how much he will suck. Your constant "he sucks" posts are really good and add to the conversation.

No, I'm not going to tell you how EJ sucks. I do doubt EJs ability to develop into a quality starting QB but that has nothing to do with my post... You basically suggested that every bad practice and preseason was a result of a predetermined strategy to lull the Bears asleep. That's kinda crazy man.

And just because I don't think EJ is good and you do doesn't mean we can't be cool. I may disagree with you but it is possible to say 'I see your point, but I disagree.'

  4. When you compare what EJ did last year, with less weapons compares to what he is did in the pre-season its hard to believe that this pre-season was anything more than a throw away. During the week, you heard how great he looks in practice with expanded playbooks...but got into a game in look horrible, when he wasnt even horrible last season....he only really had 1 terrible game ..and 1 poor game when he was healthy. I believe all the check down passes, generic passes are a hoax to lure the Bears to sleep.

    Seriously?

I've got to say The_Dude that I am pretty impressed. You've been given a pretty hard time in this thread(by myself and others), and it seems you have not only maintained civility and composure, but have come to understand the root of the problems, and adapted to it.

Changing from a "EJ will never be good!" stance to one of "I don't believe EJ will ever be good, but I hope I'm wrong" really makes a hell of a difference to cordial discussions.

I know it's a bit belated but.....welcome to the board.

We all love this team. That leads to spirited debate which can lead to 'will you don't think what I think so you suck!' which is never cool.

As far as the EJ argument goes I also think we're both tired of it. We've seen EJs stats compared with everybody from Manning to Gabbert and skewed to support each sides argument. We're all tired of it and it's time for it to play out!

Thanks for the compliment though, I always try to keep things civil.

I have to question your assertion based Orton's career numbers that are very similar to EJ's rookie year.

I understand. And let's be clear, there's no problem with disagreeing. So here's what I'll say, when I watch EJ I'm not impressed, in fact I'm frequently disappointed. When I watch Orton I see an efficient QB. That's a qualitative analysis from my perspective. I understand the stats muddy that but that's still how I see it.

  7.

One more identified anti-EJ Crusader who I'd love to hear back up the assertions with some factual analysis to support the conclusion. Onward Soldier!

I've watched him since college and I've never been impressed. I could be wrong. I'm not going to get in a debate about it because there's no point. Starting Sunday things will start getting clearer. And if I'm wrong, I'll gladly admit I'm wrong. But I do think Orton is far superior to EJ. Ortons nowhere near the physical specimen EJ is but I believe him to be the better QB. Hope that helps.

  8. EJ will have his chance to answer the bell. I'm eager to see how he does.

That said it appears I'm being labeled an "EJ hater" which is accurate and unfair. I'm not impressed with EJ and wasn't a fan of his coming out. EJ has ALWAYS frustrated me back to college. He has all the talent but he has never put it together. Never ever. He'll have good games and others that just leave you wondering how he's starting. This is not just about last season, it goes back to FSU.

Also, I've always been a big fan of Ortons. I seriously have. I was a fan of his since his Chicago days. I feel that he's the better QB.

None of my feelings make me a bad fan.

Nonetheless I feel there's merit to things I've suggested the Doug's are thinking. I can't prove them and it's like just my opinion man.

And I'd like to end on this... I think with adequate QB play and abounding the injury bug we can be a playoff team. I do not see EJ as a QB capable of getting a team into the playoffs. I could be wrong. Let's see.

  9.

A team that feels they will be a playoff calibre team that has horrendous backups will pay $5 mil for the only decent backup available(who is also one of the best backups in the league). If the backup needs to come in at any point, it means that the playoff chances for the team are not thrown away. That is worth $5M.

No QB who is looking to be the starter would settle for $5M/year. Even Kolb would have gotten $8M+ had he ended up becoming the starter.

It seems to me that you suffer from confirmation bias on this. The Bills had no realistic backup QB. In any normal season this would be a problem, but with what appears to be a very good team about to take the field for the first time in a decade, they needed a good backup QB......so they got one(and had to overpay for one).

Sure, there is a chance that EJ regresses to worse play than last season.....but do you honestly think that the Bill's FO is thinking that a likely scenario? Do you honestly think that they further thought that Orton would be good enough to be the starter needed to get them to the playoffs? If EJ falters long term this season(benched or injured), it will be devastating to not only our playoff hopes but also to Whaley & Marrone's job security.

First, I felt the backup spot should have been addressed much earlier in the offseason.

Second, I do not believe EJ Manuel is a starting caliber QB in this league. Now let's move on past that.

Marrone often spoke about wanting more production out of Tuel and Lewis. I would hear this and think 'Tuels giving you about the same production as EJ' and so if that's the case (and that's how I perceive it to be and I understand if you don't) then Marrone must not be thrilled with EJ. And why would he be? Underwhelming is aword you could use to describe EJs off season.

So,the Doug's realized that EJ could blow up I'm their faces and if they don't win this year they're gone...a new owner won't retain a losing coach or GM. So the Doug's said who is the best veteran option on the market and Orton was their guy.

I believe the plan is to start EJ, and rapidly get Orton ready because the odds of us getting out to a bad start is pretty likely.

  10. Before watching lions game i thought like a lot of fans here (not that much), that Ej is holding us back. But after watching 1st q vs lions, it doesn't look like that at all. He was not perfect. But damn, give the guy some help!

Pocket collapsed real quick on his 2 allowed sacks.

Fred Jackson dropped an easy one. He got up pissed off. He knew he effed up. That would have been a first instead of a punt.

    R. Woods dropped another one, that while not perfect, was very catchable. That would have been a first, instead of a punt.

Lets not talk about the negative plays of the rbs that are bringing the 3rd and long situations. Dude I thought we had great rbs.... wthell!

Anyway this is not all on ej. Yeah the slant pass to sammy was not good, but it wasn't intercepted either. It was batted down by Sammy.

Do u guys see what I see? Or im just on blind ej affection?

We went through this with Trent.

'Trent doesn't have time, it's the line.' So we spent a bunch of money on Dockery and improving the line.

    Then it was:

'The receivers aren't getting open! Trent is perfect!' So we brought in TO and still Trent couldn't find open receivers.

Could EJs line play better? Absolutely. But we have a good offense aside from EJ.

Tom Brady would swap his offense for EJs in a second and we all know it.

If EJ can't make this offense work, and I don't believe he can, then I believe EJ just can't be made to work.

It's great to be big and fast but as a QB it's mandatory to be accurate and able to diagnose a defense and the last two areas are clearly EJs Achilles heel.

  11.

    Yep.

Not going back there. They've really cracked down. I wonder if it has something to do with the organization. I remember WYO once saying a previous GM wanted the board shut down. Donahoe, I think.

I remember that too. Kinda weird how the main board just "disappeared."
