In the recent past the FO has used Free Agency to fill holes prior to the draft and then pick BPA.  But this year could the FO be delaying their last move until after the draft (vet CB)?  This year it might be advantageous to wait until after the draft to fill the vet CB spot.  Several reasons for it.

Unusual amount of quality CBs still on the market.  Gilmore/Fuller/Haden/Callahan/Nelson/Rhodes.

There may be a price break after the draft.   The vet CBs will face a demand dropoff by the 5-10 teams that draft CBs in the first 2 rounds.

The Bills draft could affect the type of vet CB they want - for instance, if the draft falls such that BPA in round 1 is a CB, ie Booth, then maybe FO will put in less money to fill the vet CB slot.  Get a $1-2M CB - ie old Sherman, or the oft injured B Callahan, with the intent of quickly moving Booth into the spot.  If the draft goes a different direction the FO pays more for a Nelson/Fuller/Rhodes type.

They could still draft BPA (in premium position of need) and fill in the remaining CB spot at a price point that may differ according to the selections from the draft.

This could very well be the case and if so, then they could go with BPA (among their targeted positions) and fill the CB gap afterwards.   No matter how you slice it, the Bills will definitely get a FA CB, it's just a matter of whether it will be a value FA CB or a higher FA CB.

So you can only fill a need with a first round pick?  Sorry. Not buying it. If there isn’t a corner worth a first round pick, do you still take one?

I really can’t stand this argument. Crowder and Howard are on cheap one year deals. There is NOTHING there that should preclude them from taking a WR if there is one they like.

I don’t agree with you or anyone on corner in round 1. You can’t reach for need and I think Beane likes Jackson a lot. We can get a pretty good corner in the mid rounds.

That's not what I said, reread it.

  3. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of getting a WR with the first pick but with the Diggs deal and the glaring hole at CB, I believe the odds of a CB with the 1st pick are rising, unless they get a quality FA CB.  If that happens I could see the Bills drafting CB with either a 2nd-4th round picks and wouldn’t be surprised if they chose two.

If they get a value FA CB to compete for a spot then I think they go 1st round CB.

There are a lot of good WR’s that I believe will be able to contribute that could be had with 2nd/3rd round picks.   I could see Beane holding off until then to get one of those guys.

Alec Pearce is a guy I think could be a real steal.

Well his value is as high as it's ever going to be. Package him, our first and next year's second to get to 7 with the Giants and just draft Hamilton if he's on the board that late. I'm a Poyer fan, but I can't stand people who negotiate in public. Diggs kept quiet and got paid. The only thing bush is doing is turning fans against her husband.

I would not be happy if we did this

They’d get by with a middling defense without Jordan Poyer by stacking the offense and giving Allen more playmakers.

This is not a zero-sum proposition, taking away from one side of the ball definitely hurts, look at the Super Bowl, it wasn't a shootout, defense was involved.  Or look at what the Bengals did to the Chiefs.

I like the idea of stacking Allen with weapons but Poyer and Hyde are the quarterbacks of this defense and personally I wouldn't want to disrupt that.

I don't see the Bills getting rid of any vets that were integral to their success over the past two years.  If they are going all out for the Super Bowl, you don't create holes getting rid of veterans and then have to replace them with unknowns in the draft.   Poyer is counting almost $11M against the Cap this season.  It would not surprise me if the Bills extended him a year or two with a signing bonus to spread that out, like they did for Hyde.

I think so too.  Poyer was critical to the teams efforts, he's a leader and a director of the defense.  I don't think we rock the boat for the this upcoming year.

  7. Initially it was reported as 4 year $104 Million then later on as a 4 year $96 Million extension with incentives.

I'm guessing the difference between the early morning report and what we are now hearing are the incentives?

Either way, relative to the Hopkins, Hill and Adams contract we got a real home town discount, specially when you consider that the contract increase doesn't really increase for a couple years out.

What a great deal and I think at the end of the day, Diggs wanted to do everything he reasonably could to remain a Bill and play with Josh Allen.

If they trade up for a LBer, gotta think Edmunds doesn’t get a second contract.

That would have to be the case, but as ScottLaw mentioned, I wouldn't be too thrilled with the pick, At least not of the idea of doing so.

Did he mention if we're talking trade-up in RD1, or just trade-up in general?

  9. I was listening to Sirius XM NFL radio this weekend and Zig Fracassi one of the hosts of this particular show seemed pretty certain that the Bills were going to try to trade up to get a player.  He stated that his source hasn't let him down before.   When the other co host pressed him on who it could be, he implied that it could even come from a position that is not viewed as a need such as a LB.

    Just thought that I'd share.

  10. Beane was absolutely right to let him walk at that time.   Gilmore didn’t want to be here which is not what the team was looking for at the time, he was going to get paid elite dollars which the Bills at the time didn’t want to spend because they were not contending and they wanted a fresh start with players who would have full buy in.

Now that 5 years have gone by, the culture is secure with the team, and now Gilmore may have a different view of the team, not to mention he probably will be a lot cheaper and can possibly be had on a short-term contract, the timing and situation is different and could be had.

  11. Was his personality kinda crappy?  Yep

Did he appear to be aloof at times?  Yep

Was he a top 5 Cb in the league at his peak?  Yep

He would be a huge upgrade and would undoubtedly improve our odds of winning it all.

With that said, I don't see how the Bills will be able to match whatever the top bidder can offer and I'm not so sure he would take a discount to be on a Super Bowl contender.

  12. Josh should definitely run less in the regular season and do whatever it takes in the post season.

His regular season running should consist of scrambles which typically on scrambles you take big hits.  The called runs should be only in crucial game impacting situations and inside the 5 yard line.

He is too much of a weapon to abandon his unique running qualities when the team needs it most.

Love WR Khalil Shakir from Boise State, feel like he’s vastly underrated with all the receivers in the draft but think he’s gonna be special.  Also live down here in Florida and seen S Markquese Bell from Florida A&M play and he was all over the field making plays.

Yes Khalil Shakir can play on the boundaries but also in the slot.   I think the slot is where he will be most effective.  Seems to really have a knack for driving the ball upfield right after he makes the catch.  Could be Crowder or McKenzie’s eventual replacement.  I like him a lot.

I also really like Alec Pierce.  Definitely a boundary guy, has great size 6’3 213lbs.   Phenomenal speed 4.33 40.  Great hands, smooth effortless runner who is deceptively really fast.  Intelligent route runner.  Had 8 TD’s this past year.    I think he could end up being a 3rd steal.   Will definitely help stretch the field.

Allen might have one of the greatest work ethics I've ever seen in a football player. Who else even compares? Bruce Smith? I know he famously stayed in game shape year round.

He’s dedicated to his craft, no doubt.  However, he hasn’t been a fitness freak or for that matter that dedicated to having a great diet.    Allen has alluded to this and it looks like something that he is considering in regards to having a well-balanced diet and O believe he said he was considering a full time chef to help him with these goals.

I think he needs to do this soon if he wants to extend his career, Brady did it and I think it would be smart of Allen to emulate it as well.

I actually think one of his biggest issues is not putting enough air under the ball on the deep shots. Specifically the sideline Go Route.  He throws these low angle ropes and if hes off on trajectory it sails 10 yards over the WRs head.  Meanwhile you watch a guy like Russel Wilson drop moonballs over the WRs shoulder and into a basket.  The moonshot gives the WR a chance to adjust speed and track the ball to be the in the right place at the right time.  Allen does well in deep passes like a Post where there is an X axis component but he has missed some huge opportunities on the vertical routes.

He continues to improve in ball placement on the shorter routes and is vastly improved at protecting the football on these passes, protecting his WRs, and giving them a chance at some YAC.

Right, I do think he needs to put more air on the long balls even though he has become relatively accurate.  I'm more referring to some of the post routes, I remember seeing quite a few that were thrown high BUT CAUGHT and in a few instances outright overthrown that led to interceptions, even though I think a couple of them there were miscommunications between the receiver and Josh.

  16. I hope and suspect it's true that he is refining his game.  The past two years Palmer and Allen both pointed out in interviews what Josh had worked on the, the season before last it was the deep ball and this past year it was a specific slant pattern.   The breakdown will be interesting to read.

In my view the area he needs the most improvement on is that he sometimes tends to throw the ball a bit high.  Often times they are still successful plays but it impedes on the receiver being able to get additional YAC and in worst case they are overthrown and the ball is picked off.   I think there is something in his mechanics still that are producing some of these high throws.

I'm being nit picky because his overall game is already elite but there are still areas of improvement.

  17. Many ways to analyze this:

Who are the potential players that could be moved?

Diggs- Probably at most fetches a mid first rounder (low likelihood due to the Bills chances at winning it all and they could hold off another year before they make the move)

Edmunds- Probably fetches a low to mid 2nd round value (low to mid likelihood, He probably isn’t worth what he will command on the open market, this would be the year to trade to get some value for him, however trading him does create a hole and it could be difficult to replace with similar level of play)

Poyer - probably fetches an early 3rd value ( Likelihood low, he’s a team veteran and popular with the team and the trade value won’t most likely net a suitable replacement)

Motor - probably fetches a mid 3rd to early 4th round value ( likelihood is low to mid.  If they love one of the top two backs in the draft and they think they need it to move up a couple spots it could make sense, but without replacing him I don’t see it)

Epenesa - Probably fetches a mid 5th to 6th round pick (likelihood is mid, DE room is getting crowded, his production wouldn’t be missed, but he wouldn’t net much of a difference in terms of moving up for a 1st rounder)

Moss - Probably fetches a 6th rounder ( Likelihood is mid to high, can easily replace his production but his net value wouldn’t assist with moving up with a 1st round selection.)

There was a lot of hand-wringing over Beane not tendering Bates at the 2nd round, $3.986M level.  He tenders him at that, it's a 1-year deal and the Bills go through this all over again next year, likely losing him because they can't tender/match.  For about $250K more a year (than the 2nd round tender) and $1M more total, he got him locked-up for 3 additional years.  He played this perfectly.

I think it will end up being better because I believe that abates will be the long-term answer but I also believe that Beane would have liked to have seen him play more before committing to this sort of contract.

Both things can be true at the same time.
