  1. I'd rather get rid of Kelsay and his 23 million dollar contract

Denney is very good against the run and knows how to use his size to his advantage. He bats a lot of passes down at the line with 6'7" frame.

I would try to move Kelsay at all costs. I don't think that is likely to happen if Maybin isn't in camp/under contract.

I think that this is the key. If Kelsay and Denney essentially provide the same thing, then cut the guy with the bigger salary. The Bills front office will be on board with this too.

All this being said, I think that Ellis will be the one to go. Just a hunch.

  2. Dick Jauron has been a head coach for all or part of 10 NFL seasons. That's a career for most coaches. His career record is 57 - 76. He has had 1 winning season and 9 losing seasons. He made the playoffs once and lost in the first round.

He is a loser, by definition.

I don't understand what magical evolution his supporters are waiting for. Chances are that if he does have a winning season, then that is the aberration not the 10 seasons before. It always amazes me how much having been a head coach before counts when teams are looking at HC candidates. It doesn't really seem to matter if you are successful or not... but I digress.

  3. I think the first move on injury is to move Butler to guard and Chambers in at RT. If Hangartner's the one to go out, maybe Levitre or Wood moves over to C.

I don't think so. The usual thinking is not to disrupt two positions due to an injury at one. If a guard is hurt, I think that McKinney or Chambers comes in to play guard. If it's the center, then Wood to center and McKinney/Chambers at guard. Based on his play last season, I think that Chambers is a decent backup at both guard and tackle. I don't know about McKinney. We'll have to see how he does if he ever gets in there in a real game.

  4. actually, I was watching walker very closely, and I really like the guy. But the holding he was doing in pass protection would never fly in a regular season game, and they couldn't run to that side of the line

Walker is not a strong run blocker. That's ok though. As long as he can protect Trent's blind side in the passing game the Bills can focus on running it between the tackles behind Levitre, Hamgartner and Wood. Overall, the running game may not be that strong though...

  5. Who is in your top 10? I assume you're talking all-time because he's easily #1 in the present nfl. Because I garauntee all of them had a hall of fame qb.

In the current league I would say

    1) Belichick

    2) Fisher

    3) Coughlin

    4) Tomlin

    5) Reid

A Hall of Fame QB certainly helps, but I can think of a few HOF coaches without HOF QBs:

    Joe Gibbs

    Bud Grant

    John Madden

    George Halas

    George Allen

Dick Vermeil (Warner has a chance though...)

  6. Very good defensive coach. Good organizer and decent leader. OK with cheating if it helps him win. Lucky to find a HOF QB, which turned his record around and probably made his career. On the other hand he knew what to do with Brady when he got him and allowed the offense to develop around him. He's definitely top 10 in today's game, not top ten all time though by any stretch.

  7. I will not go into the detail as a lot of other posters do but one thing is apparent.

The good - Trent looked awesome last night. He was very accurate and threw a lot of really nice passes. I also noticed the "clock in his head". During 7 on 7 if it took longer then a few seconds for a receiver to come open he would move around in the pocket.

The bad - Fitzpatrick, Hamdan, and Baker SUCK. It was painful to watch when they were in there. If Trent goes down we might as well switch to a wishbone offense because none of these guys have any business being on an NFL roster.

The offense seemed to being having its way with the defense last night. All four backs, Lynch, Jackson, Omon and Rhodes seemed to have nice lanes to run through. They all looked explosive.

Roscoe got a ton of looks last night and made one of the best catches I have ever seen on a deep ball. He was basically tackeled (pass interference) by Lankster on a 50 yd bomb and managed to haul it in.

One thing I found interesting during the tight end drills. Of all the tight ends, Derrick Fine seems to run the best routes. He has really good feet, has a very quick plant and an explosive cut. Shawn Nelson also got some looks with the first team.

Byrd and Youbooty did not play

Now you're making some sense! :o

  8. I Tivo'd the game and reran most of the plays repeatedly.

Nic Harris looked very good. So did Ashlee Palmer and Marcus Buggs for the most part. All three of them had one bad pursuit angle each but that'll happen to every linebacker at least once a game. When guys like Spencer Johnson and other DL are being blown out of the play it makes it very hard on the linebackers.

Ellison does have competition but unfortunately he's probably leading the derby right now because he knows the defense so well. Basically with Ellison he'll hurt you physically. With the young guys, they'll hurt you mentally right now.

I noticed that Harris wasn't getting great depth on his zone drops but that may be because he was spying on Vince Young quite a bit. I loved when we drafted Harris and think he'll be an excellent player in time. It may be that the coaching staff starts giving him more reps to see if they can speed up his development.

Another young defender who looked good was Derrick Jones, the recently signed DT. He's big and athletic and aside from Marcus Stroud, he's the only DT on the Bills who can say this. He was also very quick off the ball.

Yup. He needs to see some action against some better players, but he beat up on the 3rd stringers...

  9. And Trent? I will help ya Magox...

Trent Good (in short wide open throws)

Trent Bad throwing down field - He makes another bad decision throwing down field. The OL allowing pressure up the middle is irrelevant on the play, it was a very bad decision as he threw into triple coverage...the ball should never had been thrown there on that play regardless of the protection.

Its only the first preseason game, and prior to that play Trent looked good and confident...however, how many terrible decisions like this can his ego take is my question. Can he play through it? Last year once his struggles got worse he clearly lost some swagger and confidence. There is plenty of time to get it together, but once again I wonder if he is capable of reading the D fast enough and effectively as he really struggled with that all season last year...

Exactly my thoughts in watching that play. I know that it's a lot easier to relax and make good decisions when you're not worried about the pass rush, but realistically that's not going to be the case this year. If Edwards is going to have a good year he's going to have to make good, quick decisions in the face of some pressure. It wouldn't hurt if he developed a little more mobility inside the pocket either.

  10. Listen, I'm not some huge Parrish fan, but that play he made last night was sick. On a 2nd & 4 type of play, throwing a screen in his direction is a no brainer. Then once in a while have Trent pump one deep.

And while I have no tangible evidence to back this up, Roscoe Parrish on a GOOD offense with GOOD gameplanning could be a 50-60 catch/year game breaker. Give him a QB like Manning or Brees or a creative OC and he could be electric. Unfortunately our squad is retarded and will never figure this out.

Totally agree. Cut Evans too and find out what Bucky Brooks is up to. And get Bruce back on the d-line.

Don't joke. Even at his age, I'll bet that Bruce would be an upgrade in obvious passing situations...

  11. Not me. The coaches think Ellison can be really good too. I want to see it on the field.

Exactly. Everybody is really good, shows a lot of promise or is underrated... until the Bills waive them. Forget the non sense that the coach's are feeding the press and fans. Look at when they play and their performance on the field. At this point, Bell is not even the backup tackle.

  12. You guys aren't going to like this, but....

2009 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.

    Grade: 72 | Key

    Alert: None

Comment: Kelsay has been a mainstay on the Bills' defense since his second season in the league in 2004. Kelsay is somewhat undersized but is a high energy player with good athleticism and instincts. He has great initial quickness to gain leverage early in the play with speed to close and run down plays along the line of scrimmage. He finds the level of the ball well to read and react to get to the pile. He has active hands to control blockers and is able to separate effectively to maintain gap responsibility. Kelsay isn't a naturally powerful defender but can set the edge effectively with technique, athleticism and effort. He runs well showing excellent range for his position. Kelsay is a solid pass rusher but has never been a big producer in this area.

    28th overall

I actually agree with all of this except the "solid pass rusher" part. Anyone who thinks that hasn't been watching. Against the run, however, he is solid. Not dominant, but solid. If we could replace him in passing situations with a pass rushing specialist (like Maybin), then we might have a RDE combo worth something.

  13. Why do so many people seem to think that Walker belongs at RT? Is it because he is too slow to play LT? Walker looked like a strong pass blocker last year (for a RT) but his run blocking was not great. You could see that by how little confidence the Bills had in running to the right last year and Kugler confirmed it in an interview recently: "... I think he's suited for left," Kugler said. "He is a talented pass protector. He knows he has to improve on some things in the run game ...." (http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/676853.html)

A good pass blocker and mediocre run blocker doesn't sound like a RT to me. He's one of the Bills best 5 lineman so he will play somewhere for now, but I'd say that he needs to try and make the transition to LT if he want's to stick around here long term.

Butler still has a lot to prove, but I'm kind of excited about him and Wood on the right side as a run blocking tandem.

  14. I think people mean backup center who could play guard too. For most of the year, Fowler was the starting center. and when he didn't start, it was cause he was hurt

Not that it matters, but Fowler lost his starting job to Duke Preston (what does that tell you!). Preston took over when Fowler got hurt and kept starting at C the rest of the season even when Fowler was healthy. In the second game against NE when Butler was hurt, I assumed that the Bills would play Fowler at C and Preston at G as they had done earlier in the year, but instead they kept Preston at C and started Chambers at G even though he had never played G before. That's when I knew that Fowler had fallen off the depth chart.

  15. Walker is obviously not going to make it at LT long term, partly because of his attitude, but I didn't see him dominate at RT last year the way some people are saying. He was a strong pass blocker, but the Bills had almost no confidence in the right side of their line in the running game. Everything went behind Peters and Dockery... even though they weren't really producing. I spent a lot of last year wondering about this and then I read an interview with a Bills coach (I believe Kugler) saying that Walker has a lot of work to do on his run blocking.

I have a feeling that Walker is not moving back to RT under any circumstances. If the Bills were really happy with him at RT then they would've left him there and used a different approach at LT. I think that it's LT or bust for him with the Bills.
