  1. He was the best athlete coming out of college in '06. Freakish strength and speed for a big man. The boards loved him. Oh if only he was still on the board when the Bills picked 8th, they all said. Every mock draft had him in the top 5. The 49ers bit, and drafted him with the number 6 pick of the draft. What's he done so far to deserve that draft position? He's averaged bout 30 catches and 3 TD's. a year in almost 3 full seasons. The Bills almost get that much out of Royal.

But take a look at these offensive linemen that were drafted after Davis in the first two rounds in '06:

#23- Davin Joseph-G Starts for the Bucs.

#29- Nick Mangold-C Starts for the Jets.

#50- Marcus McNeill-LT Starts for the Chargers.

#55- Andrew Whitworth-LG Starts for the Bengals.

#59- Jeremy Trueblood-RT Starts for the Bucs.

My point is very simple. Offensive linemen that get drafted in the first two rounds usually end up starting in the NFL. Buffalo has ignored the offensive line in the first two rounds since they struck out with Mike Williams in 2002. This franchise needs to build a new foundation. Three of the four best centers could all still be on the board when the Bills draft in the second round. If they ignore them, and draft the hot-shot tight end or another position, no way will the other three best centers still be there when the Bills' third round pick comes along. You see that is the key. Draft your offensive linemen in the first two rounds, and he will most likely start very quickly and be an impact player for you within a year or two.

How many of the pats' o-lineman were drafted in the 1st round? Giants?

And as for your quote above, you can substitute any position into that sentence. Because almost ANY players that get drafted first two rounds "usually end up starting in the NFL."

  2. I think you're pretty off on most of this stuff. But welcome to the boards.

    1. Warner will resign in 'zona.

    2. Puz stays in the middle. He's good there and changing positions on him is not an idea I like. Forget Crowder, I'll be looking for the Bills to take a hard run a Vilma. He's a beast outside and would fortify our LB corps.

    As for the draft

    1. I'm way to scared to draft Johnson. He's a freak athlete but he wasn't even a starter last year. He has bust written all over him. And he plays for GT, not exactly a powerhouse. And yes I know Calvin Johnson came outta GT. Orakpo is a better choice, he's a polished senior, won a bunch of awards, plays for Texas, and has through the roof athletic ability too. He's a safer pick too. I want a guy who is NFL ready and can come in and compete and start right away. Johnson is a project.

    2. The draft doesn't look to have many top flight DEs. And if there isn't any value at all when we draft I'd love to see us go TE and draft Jermain Gresham. At 6'6" 260lbs and Oklahoma's leading receiver it's hard to argue with his caliber. He's just what we need.

Obviously a C is a must. So is LB depth. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Bills brought in someone to play FS because at this point it looks like Ko is not gonna do it and Scott is a good backup, but that's it. We need a rangy FS who can cover tons of ground and be a ballhawk, permitting Whitner to play closer to the line, where he's far more effective, keeping him in his natural SS spot instead of all the movin around they do to him. The lack of good FS play has hurt Whitner all year long.

Good post. However, despite not starting in 07, he still led the team in QB hurries and was ranked 7th in the ACC in forced fumbles. Fact is, whenever he did go into the game, he produced SOMETHING.

He's certainly raw, but in terms of being a pure pass rusher, I don't think there's anyone any better than him in this draft at DE. I guess that's his downfall at times as well, b/c he just pins his ears back like my dog and goes after the ball. I'm big on him personally nevertheless. <_<

  3. JP was/is a good guy, just not good at what he's being paid to do. QB! While some are arguing why did we keep him this year as a #2 , he could have demanded a release and/or trade, but again he was willing to play out his contract.

In fairness, he did play well enough last year to justify bringing him back as the #2. Many here argued he should have been starting when TE struggled. But what he has done this year on the field, I don't think even the biggest JP critique(sp) could have imagined him playing as bad as he has. I wouldn't surprise me to see him out of football next year. Though there was room for Rob Johnson, so anything is possible

Ya, he's definitely taken a step back which is concerning. However, he's still relatively young, and I'm sure he'll make it on with some team somewhere as a #2 and perhaps even compete for a starting job somewhere. JP will be just fine considering he's making millions regardless.

  4. I guess I didn't look at it that way. Thanks for clarifying for me.

No problem, I highly doubt that he was referring to what JP actually did on the field.

Despite JP's horrible play, he has been a model citizen in buffalo and very interactive within the community-- that's what Evans was getting at with his quote.

  5. Quote from Lee Evans -

"I definitely feel bad for him. I just hope that where ever he goes, things work out a little differently," Evans said. "It's a bad way to leave a town that you've done so much for."

What, exactly, has he done that's been "so" positive for this town?

He's volunteered in tons of community development programs and worked with various charities; more than most players do.

Do you follow this team at all?

  6. You are just as bad as the Bills last 3 GM's: Donahoe, Levy & (Wilson/Modrak/Guy/Brandon/Jauron)! The 3 centers on your roster currently are Mel Fowler, Duke Preston & Christian Gaddis. Yet you would ignore the very best center/guard available in the first or second rounds. You will wait until round 3 to draft your center. I don't care about "reaching" in a draft. When there is a quality OFFENSIVE LINEMEN rated first or second rounder, you damn well better draft him. I have not even bothered to look at any '09 draft boards or even know who Caldwell is or where he's ranked. But it is time for Buffalo to draft the best center on the entire draft board with their number one pick of the '09 draft - be it 8 through 13, and I don't care if Mel Kiper thinks Brandon is an idiot for "reaching."

You say this Michael Johnson DE is another beast? So what! Your center handles the football every offensive play, and the Bills have not had an NFL caliber center since Kent Hull retired in 1996!!

I'm sorry bro, but if you don't even know who Caldwell is, don't take the time to sit there and lecture me about what we should/shouldn't do in the draft. Educate yourself first, then talk. Or here's a thought - watch some college football, instead of "googling" other people's mock drafts.

As for your input, thanks but no thanks.

  7. I hereby unilaterally elect bobonators to be GM and VP of football operations.

I think landing Warner would be incredibly difficult, but if there is a way I'm all for it. I also like the idea of actually drafting a FB. I'm tired of having a rarely used FB who seems like some guy we just picked up off the street. If there's a Tony Richardson or Lorenzo Neal type of guy out there, I'm all for landing him.

LOL..thanks. I think McCall would be a much better addition over anything we have now. It's been YEARS since our RB's had a solid blocker leading the way.

  8. I'd expect Caldwell to go in the 2nd round. He's an AP 1st Team All American who's going to the Sr. Bowl, so his stock is going to go up.

And for the record, McCall is considered by many to be the best blocking TE in the draft. At Alabama, he was more of an H-back type, like Schouman. He was probably the most underappreciated piece of the puzzle that made Bama so successful on the ground this year.

Ya, McCall has def. been great...how high do you see him going? I can't see him going any higher than the 5th round or so..and hopefully we'd be able to snag him.

  9. i thnk jon kittna will be released by detroit, he's not a big name and not really that great but he's certainly an upgrade over jp and hasenough experience to tutor trent and maybe win a couple games if, i mean when trent goes down.

the one FA i really want is Matt Birk but that's a pipe dream, Kellen Winslow is a big time talent but he's always hurt and kind of a jerk off. I think we will have to draft a guy like Coffman or Travis Beckum and start them immedietely b/c there isnt a lot out there TE-wise. As far as WRs i think we'll be the same; i'm a big Reed fan but he's best in the slot. i think Roscoe isnt really up to being a significant contributor at WR, but i like what i've seen of Steve Johnson and he's one of the few reasons i'm going to watch these last 2 games. Hardy sucks, but he'll be given some time.

If Kitna is released, I'd definitely be up for bringing him in here. He's been around enough to be a very solid backup, and yet he hasn't been successful enough (imo) for him to demand a starter's position, thereby removing any potential controversy with Edwards/Kitna. I'd totally be down for Kitna.

  10. They are probably high on Fine due to the research before the draft and how has played in peseason/camps etc. What body of work does schouman have over Fine? He appeared in only 1 game last year. Has Schouman ever played a full game without getting injured. Fine looks to be getting more opportunities than Schouman the past couple of weeks.

I do agree with you that we need to bring in a high quality TE this year. I don't really like him personally but what about Kellen Winslow? he might be available in a trade.

Schouman and Fine to me are interchangeable and one isn't any more of an impact player than the other. As for Kellen Winslow, I'm not sure. He's ovbiously got talent, but you know how this organization is with "high character" guys, something Winslow might lack. I would stay away from him. If we were to take a chance on a questionable character like Kellen, I would rather have him be a "sure thing" on the field. He hasn't proven that yet imo.

  11. While the blanket statement "the defense is better than the offense" may be correct, you have to look at specifici facets of the game when it comes to the draft. By far, our weakest phase is pass rushing, so we should draft a DE. To me, it's as simple as that.

I agree completely with this post. :bag:

  12. I know DE, DT, OLB are all big needs, but let's face it, offense is what is holding us back big time. And on the offenseive side, the problem i think is down to 2 spots, C & TE. There are 2 very good centers, and 2 very good tall pass-catching tightends. I really think we need to go that route in the 1st round. Preferably a TE as that will help trent out incredibly. Center could be adressed in free agency hopefully. And OLB, DT can alwys be picked up in the 3rd, 4th, 5th. DOn't forget we get Bowen back next year, and i still have high hopes for him.

So my draft plans would be

    TE

    DE

    OLB

    DT

    C

    G

    Wr

What C would solve our problem via FA though? The only stud that's available is Birk, and i don't think he's going anywhere. (I could be missing someone)

I agree with TE being a priority, but just not enough of a priority to surpass the lack of pass rush.

IMO, we're one Center away from completing the offensive line...and one solid pass rusher from completing the Defensive line (assuming that Schobel can continue to produce) though we still need more depth at DT.

I'm not sure about our LB's...seeing Mitchell beat by a FB this past week made me want to vomit. Poz has been very average, and Ellison can't/shouldn't start.

We're either going to have to get a DE (ala Peppers) or LB (dansby, peterson, crowder) via FA...b/c we won't be able to fill everything through the draft.

Being that I don't expect us to get a guy like peppers, I think we're going to have to draft a DE with our first pick, hopefully go TE with our second, go Center with our third and we can get a LB and and an "ok" DT in FA.

  13. totally agree, we have no shot a Warner. Arizona would be crazy to let him walk. There is a chance we could get Karlos Dansby or Julius Peppers though. Getting aanother pass rusher might be the easiest way to improve our defense. As far as Poz, I think he played well enough as an OLB in college but he's too slow to do that in the pros. I wouldn't mind seeing the Bills try to get a free agent WR with size. Who knows if Hardy is a bust or not (too early to tell IMO) but it coudln't hurt to give our QBs another WR just to be safe.....

Ya, i realize Warner probably won't happen. Any thoughts on what veteran QB to bring in though (w/o trading for one).

Ya, Dansby would be a solid pickup as well.

There aren't too many big WR's that are FA's though. What would you guys feel about Henderson from the saints? He's got big-play potential. Only 5-11 though I think...so he would be like a Lee Evans or Reed.

That's why I think we really need a TE. If we're going to have small WR's..then we need a big target at TE to go to in the red zone. Hardy hasn't shown anything and now with this injury he might not even play next year, or if he does, who knows how long it'll take him to get back to 100%.

  14. If, and thats a big if still, Warner plays next year it will ONLY be in Arizona. He is not even worth discussing. We have about as much chance of getting Brady.

Two, the Bills staff are said to be pretty high on Derek Fine, so I dont see them using a high pick on a TE...not saying they shouldnt, just dont see it happening. I think Fine has shown some potential and I hope they get him some more playing time down the stretch here to see what he can do.

Three, I think Poz would be worse on the outside. He is better suited to play MLB to me. I dont think he has the speed to as effective on the outside...just my opinnion though.

I most likely agree with you with Warner, however that's who I would still target..depite the fact that it probably will not happen. I really don't knoww what veteran QB to bring in here. Batch? Grossman (is he any different than JP?)...the pickings look pretty slim. Maybe just go with Hamden and get a Boller type QB and hope for the best.

With respect to Derek Fine, they're pretty high on him? Based on what body of work exactly? His 5 or so catches for his career? Give me a break. (not meant towards you). It's about time this team got serious about the TE position b/c we're essentially playing every game with one man less on offense. Is it any surprise that we've been so pathetic in the red zone for the past 2-3 years? It shouldn't be.

Derek Fine would be perfect on this team..as the second or third TE behind Schouman.

As for Poz..didn't he play outside linebacker in college for a while? Poz would be an upgrade over Ellison though, that's for sure.

  15. 1. Sign Warner at QB. He still can throw the ball productively, and he can tutor Edwards. He wouldn't be here more than 2 years anyway. If we can't sign Warner, no biggie..I don't mind giving Edwards a shot again next year, but we def. need a veteran backup.

    2. Sign Channing Crowder and put him at MLB; move Paul P. to the outside.

Those would be the main FA's the bills should sign.

    Draft:

    1. Michael Johnson--DE. Beast mode part II

    2. Chase Coffman--TE. This offense and our QB's finally need a reliable TE. At 6'6, he would also be an instant redzone threat. He could very well be here for us when we pick in the 2nd. GET HIM.

    3. Antoine Caldwell--C

    4. Dorrell Scott--DT

    5. Worrell Williams--MLB

    6. Travis McCall--FB

    7. Whatever.

    Scott/KO Whitner

    Mitchell/ Crowder/ Paul P.

    Mcgee Schobel/Williams/Stroud/Johnson Greer

    Evans Peters/Dockery/Caldwell/Butler/Walker/Coffman Reed

    Warner

    McCall

    Lynch

    Done. ;)

  16. man...everybody's shooting down my trade scenario...look, I'm not one to trade down myself...I would rather get the best player at the spot we are in...I was just giving an option to all thos ppl who want to take a center in round 1...I do not believe the Bills will take a center in the top 15 picks...especialy when theres like 5 really good centers coming out this year...maybe more if underclassmen come out aswell...the word "reach" is over-used and its crap...every single player taken in the draft is a reach...every single player taken in draft is good/great in college but who knows what they will do in NFL...the way I like to see the draft is to just take the best player in the "most needed position/needed position"on your team at the time of your pick...I do not comprehend the word "reach"(ie: Whitner), but I do comprehend the word "Bust"(ie: McCargo, Williams, Losman)...I just happen to feel that in round 2 Luigs or Caldwell will be there to take at pick #44..and to honest, I think Buffalo will be picking top 10 this year...the good thing about picking top 10 is every round(except round 1) you can find earlier round talent that slipped thru...picking at #40 is like a late 1st round pick, your 3rd round pick is like a late 2nd round talent and so on.

    ;)

  17. actually..if Bills pick 8-12 Id like to see them trade down to like 20-25 and get an extra #2 and/or #3...use 1st round on Mack and use 2 #2's on DE and OLB..then go 3-TE, 3-DT, 4-CB, 5-OG, 6-QB, 7-whocares

right now Bills are sitting at pick 12..i can see 49ers and chargers winning 1 more atleast and Buffalo loseing rest of season...this would put Bills at about pick 8-10

    1-lions 0-14

    2-chiefs 2-12

    2-rams 2-12

    4-bengals 2-11-1

    5-seahawks 3-11

    5-raiders 3-11

    7-browns 4-10

    8-49ers 5-9

    8-packers 5-9

    8-jax 5-9

    11-chargers 6-8

    12-bills 6-8

    13-saints 7-7

    13-redskins 7-7

    13-texans 7-7

    16-arizona 8-6

    16-bears 8-6

    16-broncos 8-6

    19-philly 8-5-1

    20-atl 9-5

    20-bucs 9-5

    20-vikings 9-5

    20-dallas 9-5

    20-ravens 9-5

    20-miami 9-5

    20-ne* 9-5

    20-jets 9-5

    28-colts 10-4

    29-panthers 11-3

    29-nyg 11-3

    29-pitt 11-3

    32-tenn 12-2

I'm sorry man, but the thought of trading down disgusts me. We really don't need that much depth on this team...we've been accumulating depth for years now. WE NEED PLAYMAKERS!
