  1. I know this play has been somewhat discussed on this board, but I wanted to bring up another point. During this weeks press conferences both Juaron and Trent discussed that they practice this situation during the week with 15 seconds on the clock. What they apparently didn't account for was that a defense can stall the play a little and make it difficult to run the special teams out on the field. What was more upsetting however was the entire mindset of the play (and this is the main reason I can't take another year of the Bufalo Bills led by Dick Juaron).

Down 3-0 the Bills were absolutely content to attempt to tie the game rather than take a chance for the lead with a touchdown. With :22 seconds left on the clock the Bills should have thrown one ball into the endzone. If it is caught we take the lead, if not you take your field goal. Yes, it was into the wind, but so what, Cassel and the Pats threw several key passes into the wind the very next quarter.

Trent's reasoning for not throwing a pass in that situation was for two reasons. The first was that the weather conditions were too difficult (once again see the Patriots touchdown drive in the 3rd quarter). The second reason was that if you take a sack you run the risk of the clock running out. This comment was the most bothering to me. Juaron's scared and non-aggressive mentality has trickled down to the starting QB. Tell me how running a blast up the middle is any different than taking a sack with no timeouts left. I'm willing (and so should the coach) to risk a sack for the sake of making an attempt to take the lead and consequently the momentum going into the half. Like others have pointed out, Dick Juaron is totally content with keeping a game close rather than thinking score, score, score.

I know now the game and season is over so many don't care. However, this play was yet another example of how this team is thoroughly outcoached and unprepared week in and week out. The game was an embarrassment to all Bills fan.

To me, that play should be reason #1232345 why DJ should be fired. Inexcusable. Winning coaches NEVER make mistakes like that. There are simply way too many blunders from this coaching staff; it's just unacceptable.

  2. This is the priority I give to the positions we need to improve. This isn't necessarily the order I think we should draft..b/c it depends on FA.

    1. DE

    2. TE

    3. C

    4. LB

    5. DT

    6. WR

    7. DB

My dream draft for the first 3 picks would be as follows:

    1. Michael Johnson - DE - I know a lot of people would probably prefer Orakpo, but quite frankly, I just don't see him being there when we draft. I personally think that Johnson (I've watched GT quite a lot) has arguably the most tools/raw talent of any DE in this draft. He's a FREAK...he actually reminds me a bit of Kearse (in terms of build/wingspan)...his only drawback in my opinion is the fact that he's still kinda raw. But hey, look at Ware, he didn't come into the league and dominate from the beginning..he had a bit of a learning curve and now he's a complete beast. Johnson is a freakishly good talent/athlete, and when was the last time the bills had someone like that?

    2. Chase Coffman - TE - To me it's simple: This damn team has been playing with one less player on offense since Metzelaars played here. This difficiency HAS TO END THIS OFFSEASON. A solid TE is one of the most important pieces/safety nets for a developing QB. Coffman is a high motor guy, with very good size, EXTREMELY good hands, and a never say die attitude. There's a chance that he could still be there for us in the 2nd round. We would need to take him there - no questions asked.

    3. Antoine Caldwell - C - This guy has anchored the Crimson Tide's OL during his entire collegiate career. He's smart, he's quick, and pretty damn athletic for an OL. I even think he earned his degree in 3 years or something like that - I'd have to look that one up. He doesn't come with as many bells and whistles as say a Mack or Unger, but he could very well make it into the 3rd round. If he's there when we draft in the 3rd, we should def. snatch him up.

I need time to think of the remaining 4 picks.

Hopefully the Bills can at LEAST land a solid veteran LB in FA to replace Ellison, b/c he simply has no business starting. I wouldn't expect the bills to make a big splash in FA - as usual. If the Bills are incapable of even getting a veteran starting LB in FA, then the 3 guys above will have to change imo (ie draft a LB with our 2nd pick).

Oh ya, and for those of you who are calling for Unger or Mack as our first pick in the draft (which I personally think is ludicrous to draft a C in the first round--but that's another topic I'd happily participate in), just a word of caution: Name me the top defenses that Mack and Unger have faced during their collegiate careers on a weekly basis? While not taking anything away from them, the Pac-10 isn't really known for their stout defensive lineman. Just something to consider, that's all.

Caldwell has faced some of the top defenses in college football year after year and held his own most of the time.

  3. It has to be a DE unless a top 2 OT falls to them...I'm going to go with Maybin out of Penn State. If he has a strong showing against USC, I think he has a legit shot of being a top 15 pick. I hear a lot of people saying Orakpo, but I don't have too much confidence in Texas players (i.e. Mike Williams (ouch!), Chris Simms, Cedric Benson, Ricky Williams, etc.)

Which player and position would you choose? Obviously, workouts and medical reports we don't have access to, but what do you think and why. Bonus points for strong arguments for what players and position you would take on the 2nd and 3rd round.

  4. Provide me a single game where Dick Jauron, in his tenure here, has outcoached the opposing team's coach.

Just one game. On the other hand, I can provide at least 5 games just THIS season where DJ was the one that was outcoached.

    Please.

I like DJ the person. I don't like DJ the coach.

    He needs to be fired.

Bring in Steve Spagnola or Fassel or Cowher or even Mariucci.

Ralph needs to move here, and move quickly.

If DJ was playing for his coaching life this past sunday, then he failed MISERABLY. He should've been fired right after that horrid run that we did to end the first half. Typical DJ, and typical buffalo.

  5. My car is worth more than the average home in Buffalo, so as per where I am and who I talk to is really different than who you do. People give me information all the time and as you see in my little pick, I shake hands with our crew on occasion. You can tear me a new one but as of now DJ looks to be gone. Will cooler heads prevail and DJ / Ralph sleep on it and come to an arrangement where some of the staff gets axed / moved and DJ stays on, well that's another story.

Ralph likes DJ and thinks of him as a Marv type Ivy leaguer. The problem I see is that without a Polian type upstairs, the talent we field is good for nothing and DJ is working with 2nd tier talent in general. Half of the people we fielded today wouldn't start on a majority of the NFL teams, so what makes them good enough for us. Dallas has the exact opposite problem we do, all the talent and clueless coaching.

I love people like you. "Shaking hands with our crew"; knowing people on the "inside"; driving cars "worth more than the average home in Buffalo"; yet, still relegated to posting on a messageboard on a Sunday night, and providing vague "insider" information that essentially tells us nothing that my dog doesn't already know.

Lets analyze exactly what you just said:

"You can tear me a new one but as of now DJ looks to be gone. Will cooler heads prevail and DJ / Ralph sleep on it and come to an arrangement where some of the staff gets axed / moved and DJ stays on, well that's another story."

In that phrase, you essentially gave us 0 information. Great job guy. I envy your knowledge.

  6. This is how scary our Offense was this year (and not scary-good):

    1. Seattle - 30th Defense in the league.

    2. Jax - 12th Defense in the league.

    3. Oak. - 27th Defense in the league.

    4. St. Louis - 29th Defense in the league.

    5. Arizona - 19th Defense in the league.

    6. San Diego - 24th Defense in the league.

    7. Miami (2x's) - 15th Defense in the league.

    8. Jets (2x's) - 17th Defense in the league.

    9. Patsies (2x's) - 10th Defense in the league.

    10. Cleveland - 26th Defense in the league.

    11. Chiefs - 31st Defense in the league.

    12. San Fran - 16th Defense in the league.

    13. Denver - 28th Defense in the league.

We played ONE team this year that had a defense that was in the top 10 and that was NE, who are 10th. In those two games, we scored a combined 10 points while being shut out at HOME. Folks, this offense went beyond simply being horrible - it was perhaps the worst in the NFL (considering the competition we played).

To me, our offseason "musts" are clear: Draft/Sign a pass-rushing DE, and then every other single major move should be concentrated on offense.

The horseshit of an offense we witnessed this year must be addressed this offseason.

  7. Except for criticizing Edwards' use of gloves, your points are pretty much correct. I couldn't care less about gloves; even Brady used to wear them. If the guy feels more comfortable wearing them, so be it.

Forget about gloves, how about Edwards just sucking as usual against a good defense?

  8. 2006 #29 NY Jets Center Nick Mangold

2005 #26 Seahawks Center Chris Spencer

2003 #21 Browns Center Jeff Faine

Yeah, I personally have never heard of taking a center in the first. Unheard of.

Yes, it's unusual. It usually requires a team with a crying need for a center and for one center to be rated well above the rest, the kind of player that doesn't come around very often.

Hey, wait a minute, that's the situation with the Bills this year!! Center is a desperate need, and Mack is rated well above any other center in this year's draft and going back several years as well.

Don't accuse people who want Mack of ignorance. We just disagree with you. At severe risk of repeating myself on one thread, we need a BIG OLE CENTER, not an economy model. The DTs in the division are big and very physical. The problem with Fowler isn't that his technique isn't good or that he isn't fast enough or smart enough. It's that he consistently gets blown up and pushed into the backfield by guys who weigh between 30 and 70 pounds more than he does. Drafting a second or third rounder would net us a 290 pounder who has the same deficits that Fowler has.

There are only two centers in the draft who are good centers who also weigh 320, and they are Mack and Luigs. And both will probably be gone by our second round pick.

Hey Thurman. I hear ya that we need a Center. But go around the league, and you'll quickly see how only a handful of teams' dominant offensive lineman were ever drafted in the first round. It is well known that dominant offensive lineman can be found in rounds 1-7.

    Dolphins have two

Dallas Cowboys have two first round picks on their offensive line

Giants, with the best O-line in football, have zero. And two of the five were undrafted.

The Patriots have 1 first rounder, and he was drafted with the final pick of the first round.

    Chargers have zero.

    The Steelers have zero.

    The Panthers have two.

    Titans have zero

    The Broncos have zero.

    The Ravens have two.

    The Vikings have two.

    The Cardinals have one.

Out of all the teams I just listed. None of them have a Center that was drafted in the first round. Quite frankly, for the bills to take one in the first would be a wasted pick. Other than a stud LT or RT, there are few times where an Olineman warrants a first round pick.

  9. He made a decent tackle other then that outta position 90% of the time......dude gets faked out on everything. Cant contain outside. He missed a tackle that went for an additional 10 yards........Denney sucks!

Kelsay and Denney would be OK backups..giving Schobel and Orakpo/Johnson a breather.

  10. Chambers held his own, against a pretty mediocre line...good game for him though. Whatever the Bills are lacking on the OL in their starters, they seem to be able to develop some depth...

Also underrated, the Bills secondary. I know, they gave up 359 yards, or whatever, but with the lack of pass rush, and crummy play of the linebackers, the game was on their shoulders, for the most part...Whitner, McKelvin, Corner, Scott and, (especially) McGee all had some huge plays to help ice the win for the Bills.

I agree completely, this was probably one of the best games for our DB's this season. Many tipped balls, solid coverage in critical situations, and two turnovers (well, Mitchell got that INT technically). Today, bend but don't break actually worked b/c denver should've scored much more than they did.

Witnessing today's game, I hope everyone can see why in my other post and many other individuals on this board are advocating the absolute NEED of a pass rushig DE in the draft. You simply can't run a cover/tampa 2 defense w/o a pass rush--well, technically you can't be effective with any kind of defense with no pass rush, but it's even more critical when you're playing zone. We weren't able to sack Cutler with a 4 man rush once in this game...we didn't even come close. Truly pathetic. Johnson or Orakpo in the first round..i don't want to hear anything else.

I think a reason why our DB's made more plays than usual today is b/c we were playing man quite a lot in certain situations. Thoughts?

  11. My Dad came up this idea while we watching football today.

He thinks that the Pats* will Franchise Matt Cassell during the offseason.

He then thinks that both Cassell AND Tom Brady will be on the Trading block and whichever QB gets the best offer will be traded.

My brother thinks that nobody is buying Cassell, and therefore that this cannot happen because the Pats* can't afford to pay Cassell that kind of money to do nothing. The rebuttle here is that the Pats* are really trying to move Brady for a rediculous offer i.e. 1st rd Pick for the next couple of years plus a premium player and probably some middle round picks too.

I think (and my Dad) that Belicheat is crazy enough to do it (trade brady) and thinks he can plug anybody into his system and get success. Cassel has won 10 games and has the pats* on the verge of a playoff trip when everyone counted them out. He has had back to back 400 yard games this year and he threw for 345 in the snow today. Somebody would make an offer for Cassel as well IMO. Plus the pats* have pulled of trades like this before (Deion Branch comes to mind)

Is Belicheat that arrogant and heartless to sell Brady after all that they have accomplished together?

    Thoughts?

Listen, I hate Brady with the best of them. But if I were a pats fan, let me see Cassell produce in the playoffs and in the super bowl to the level that Brady has before we trade him away.

If someone is going to offer 3 1st round picks or whatever kind of absurd package, then the Pats would almost have to consider that deal.

As a Bills fan, I would sacrifice our 3 next 1st round picks for a P. Manning or Brady. Instant playoffs for the next 5 years.

  12. Chambers. Maybe I missed one, but I didn't see him beaten at all tonight. I truly thought that Peters being out was going to be a disaster for Edwards this game. While at the beginning the O-line struggled with the blitz packages, I didn't see any of the sacks attributed to Chambers.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Regardless, big kudos to Chambers for stepping in there!

  13. I agree Bills, but can I add to the list.......

Lindell.....he's shaken off the bad games and had a nice game today. If he dont make those kicks we simply dont win the game.

McKelvin......kid gives us field position without getting the ball on kickoffs.

Last but not least Fred Jackson......great insurance when Lynch is down. Pound for pound Jackson is as good as Lynch.

McKelvin has been one of teh few bright spots for us this year. He's def. developing into a star player all-around. It's a shame that INT didn't count

As for Fred Jackson, he's turning into one of my favorite players on the team mainly b/c of his history and how hard he's had to work to get here.

  14. 1) Trent Edwards isn't a bust yet, we learned he is a much better QB than JP. He shouldn't be anointed yet, but good to see he still COULD be our future QB.

    2) WE WON A F-ING COLD WEATHER GAME!!!!! Maybe some of these guys can play in the cold. Guess we'll see next week though.

Ya, winning this game in such frigid conditions, and on the road certainly showed me a lot about Edwards. Def. some kudos to him.

  15. You're a disgrace. You root for the team to win, whether it matters or not.

Can't speak for that guy, but I'm def. rooting for the bills to win. However, I'm also being realistic. After that horrible game last week vs. the Jets, traveling on the road, in 10 degree weather?:

    Denver - 37

    Bills - 10

    Book it.

  16. I'd like to see the Bills give Steve Johnson a real shot at the #2 receiver spot starting with these last two games. Throw him the rock and see what he can do.

i'm interested as well, however, did you see that reverse last week? He looked pretty darn slow. Def. want to see more though.
