I agree, we'll still need to find a solid #2 reciever for 2009 or this offense will continue to sputter.
Demetrius Williams - End of Discussion

I do not know if he was a total bust here.
Noone & I mean noone can pick a candbar wrapper off the street like one Jonathan Paul Losman.
Paul Gaustad can... and while doing it he's still a productive member of a non-playoff caliber team.
-
Our team is the end of the line for WR's, name one that left Buffalo and had any level of success??
Moulds put up over 500 yards in Houston and over 300 in Tennessee.
Chris Walsh left after the 1993 season and continued to play in the league until 2002... (notice I said play)
Don Beebe had one good year of over 700 yards for Green Bay
Chris Burkett left in 1989 and had 5 productive seasons with the Jets
Bob Chandler put up 786 yards in 1981 for Oakland, and followed it with over 400 the next season.
Ahmad Rashad
Other than that it's pretty amazing how no WR has ever left here as anything more than a kick returner.

He's waiting to hear back from the Department of Environmental Conservation... I'm not sure if he's looking to clean up Brown Field Sites or just plant trees... his true passion in life.
Either way, I wish him well.

New owner, new front office, new coaches, new scouts, new players but the same old hard headed fans that stick with them through all the low quality crap they throw at us can stay.
Realistically - We would need to trade Lee Evans and use the extr 9 million to shore up our offensive live with legitimate NFL lineman. At least that way we run effectively and allow Edwards time to read the field. At best we're a mediocre offense at that point. Reed, Jackson, Roscoe and Hardy... that sounds about like Jacksonville WR core. Lynch and Freddy behind a real line could put up good numbers.
We'd need to catch lightning in a bottle and draft an absolute Rookie of the Year for our definsive line. Our defense would have to be the best in the league to make up for our weak offense.
Brady would need to bust his knee again.
-
What about seeing if Roscoe can throw a ball?
-
Ouch... that contract is terrible.
Coles and TJ must be happy.
-
Of which he played sparingly as a rush backer in Miami before they let him go. After recording 24.5 sacks 3 interceptions and 13 forced fumbles in his last 2 years. Put him in a front 7 with Seymour,Wilfork,Warren, Thomas,Mayo there is nothing "good" for us coming out of that.
You forgot Ray Lewis too.

Well, since that's about the Vet minimum, I suppose he took it all in stride...
That's what I was just going to say.
It seems like every post of mine comes back to Alex Smith tody. Fitzpatrick was the 14th rated QB in the 2005 draft class... by far the worst draft class I can remember.
QB's ranked higher going into the draft:
Aaron Rodgers, California
Alex Smith, Utah
Charlie Frye, Akron
Jason Campbell, Auburn
Kyle Orton, Purdue
Andrew Walter, Arizona St.
Adrian McPherson, Florida St.
David Greene, Georgia
Stefan LeFors, Louisville
Dan Orlovsky, Connecticut
Derek Anderson, Oregon St.
Gino Guidugli, Cincinnati
Jason White, Oklahoma
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Harvard
Not making that list, and selected just before Ryan Fitzpatrick......... Matt Cassel

alex smith
Alex Smith is the product of being the best QB in a terrible draft. Unfortunately SF needed a QB and had the #1 Pick. That was brutal year to have a #1 pick.
That said... Buffalo has drafted much better players (In my opinion), but the AFC East has been much more competitive than the NFC West in recent years.

Mike Nugent. Our problems would be solved if we'd have got him in the first.
2005 - I trade away Rounds 2, 3 and 5th to get another 1 in 2006
4th Round - Jason Brown over Duke Preston
This might be the worst draft class ever.
2006
1a) Cutler - Because Schaab turned out to be crap for us.
1b) Ngata
1c) taken from the trade of the 2005 picks D'Qwell Jackson
3) Owen Daniels
-
2004
1a) I liked the Evans Pick - Match him with Boldin and our offense is looking good
1b) Steven Jackson - bythis time Travis Henry was in trouble for woman problems
3) Matt Schaub - Drew is on the way out.
4) Will Allen - If not I go for depth at DE and take Jared Allen
-
Mentally Trapped in 1970, you lucky SOB.
Do we need to keep our same draft positions?
2003
1st) Eric Steinbach (Instead of Willis - Travis Henry worked just fine)
2nd) Anquan Boldin
3rd) Asante Samuel (He also was available with our 4th)
4th) Jarret Johnson DE - Because we didn't take Kelsay with our 2nd
Is this what you mean?

See Dante Hall's career stats for a prediction of Roscoe's future.
Now that we have Leodis returning too, Roscoe doesn't seem to be worth the contract. Without Leodis his value was argueable, because our offense needs every yard we can get.

agreed
Athletes typically file taxes in two states, if they reside in another state. Taxes get filed in the state of thier HOME games and where they reside the rest of the year.
As far as I know there are two ways that athletes can prorate the income. The first is to prorate it by number of games... If someobody lived in Florida in the offseason and played for the Bills, they'd file 7/16ths of their income in NY and 9/16ths in Florida. The other option to figure out "Duty Days". They figure out how many days their duties were required (traning camps, preseason, season, playoffs, etc) and how many of thier duty days were spent in NY. Then they prorate the income respectively.
Using the first method of "Games Played", it's to the players advantage that Buffalo plays one game in Toronto if they live in a state has lower income tax rates.
-
I'd do it for a 4th. 3rd is tough but arguable. A 2nd would be seriously overpaying.
Unless it's contingent upon a new mutli-year contract, there's no way the Bills can give more than a 3rd... and even that is pushing it for one year of his services.

I was going to start a new post but this seems like a good place to regurgitate this:
When it comes to signing free agents, it's about more than just the salary cap.
Besides the salary cap you have to take into account:
The Bills were 27th in team revenue at $206 million.
The Washington Redskins where 1st at $327 million.
That means that Washington's team revenue is 159% of Buffalo's.
The Bills were 28th in operating income at $12.4 million.
The Redskins were 1st at $58.1 million.
That means that Washington's operating income is 468% of Buffalo's.
People who want the Bills to spend more simply don't understand that it's about more than just the salary cap. You have to have the money and still be able to make a profit.
That's why I think they're dumping salaries... not necessarily to make a run, but to stay profitable in the current economy. Even with a payroll at 139 million, they only made a $12 million profit last year. Do you see attendence going up this season?... or do you see more sponsors? The best thing Ralph could do is sell the naming rights of the stadium to generate some extra income.

And you HONESTLY BELIEVE that Bryan Scott is better than Sean Jones? ..............................
How much is he asking for? Cleveland avoided tagging him, because the price tag would have been over 6 million. I know he's currently making over 2 million, but I think his asking price must be substantially more.
Scott is making less than one million this year... but he's not as good as Sean Jones.

Cutler didn't have Royal until this season so he doesn't count. Denver has been a 1 man show at WR with Marshall the last couple of years before this one. Scheffler also didn't emerge until this season so he doesn't count either. I think his TE was Putzier the first 2 years.
He had Javon Walker in 2006 along with Rod Smith. Marshall was the #3 and the TE was Scheffler.
2007 Javon Walker was injurred most of the year. The leading recievers were Marshall, Stokely, and Scheffler.
For what it's worth... 6.2 million buys Brandon Marshall's and Scheffler's current salaries plus an extra million.
-
The trade talks were in the context of a 3 way deal with Cassel going to Denver.
Josh McDaniels is the new head coach in Denver and was Cassel's quarterbacks coach since he came into the league. He must love Cassel. Also he's probably going to run a similar system as New England and thinks Cassel is a great fit.
Denver is still talking to Detroit about a possible two team trade...

I might be a homer but here are some stats...
Trent after 2 seasons (24 games)
643 Attempts
396 Completions
61.6%
4,329 Yards
6.7 Yards Per Attempt
18 TDs
18 INT
79.15 Rating
12 Wins - 12 Losses
Cutler after 2 seasons (21 games)
604 Attempts
378 Completions
62.6%
4498 Yards
7.4 Yards Per Attempt
28 TDs
19 INT
88.20 Rating
9 Wins - 12 Losses

Please remember that the Bills have to pay Edwards for the games that he is too hurt to play in.
6.2 million gets you a solid back up, a quality offensive lineman, and another reciever.
-
I like how Edwards is cool and calm. But I love the fire that Cutler can bring.
Should we factor in the 6.2 million dollar difference in price tag?
I'll take Edwards plus the money.
-
This ought to be a good debate. I would rather have Cutler because of the arm strength and ability alone. He makes mistakes at times, but what young QB doesn't? He reminds me of a young Brett Favre and would be the first legitimate franchise QB that we've had since Kelly. I don't think we can honestly say that Trent makes better decisions in game situations than Cutler. We know Cutler can play well in the Buffalo weather because he was good in Denver and would fit better with our #1, under contract for 5 more years, WR Lee Evans. I don't believe that Trent has a greater "upside" than Cutler. Just don't see it. That's just my 2 cents though.
I think they're pretty much washes...
Nearly identical QB ratings, yards per attempt and INTs per attempt. Cutler was sacked far less, despite attempting 300 more passes.
I'll wait to really bash on Edwards until after this season. He did look different after the concussion this season, but Cutler looked pretty sh------- two seasons ago playing with Diabetes. Lets see if Edwards can clear the cobwebs and step up this season.

My quick Travis Henry story...
I once heard that he was turned down for $10,000 credit from a furniture store while he was with the Bills due to bad credit and high child support payments. If I remember correctly, he made $750k that season.
