  1. I think, since he is under contract, he would be on waivers. If we claim him, he has to come here, right?

You know, this isn't my strong suit, but I found this explanation:

    http://www.ninersnation.com/2010/9/3/1666936/waiver-wire-explained-also-pup-ir

Jean-Gilles was drafted in 2006. He needs 4 accrued seasons to be a free agent rather than go through waivers

But... according to http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/J/JeanMa20.htm he first played in 2007, and only 4 games

I think you need 6 games to count as an accrued season?

So maybe he could be claimed off waivers?

My understanding is off waivers the team with the worst record gets him (if multiple teams claim) and yeah, he can go to that team or quit football.

  2. They did not get the Stacy Andrews trade in to the league before 6 so they cut Jean-Gilles and want to resign him tomorrow.

Buffalo should do a waiver claim or sign him to a long term deal today. Very good interior OL

I'm not as up as I could be on all this waiver vs. release stuff, but as a 4 year vet does a waiver claim even apply here?

We can try to sign him if we really want to, we have to persuade him we're better for him than Philly

    Good luck with that

  3. I am surprised a little, but I think they can pick up players of the same quality as the ones they let go at those two positions. Defensive backs are a deep area on this team. Some of those cut offensive lineman are going to be on the practice squad. I wonder if they might be able to deal one of those defensive backs.

I had that thought too, that some of the choices may have been made with a deal discussion in mind.

  4. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100902

    Ouch!

We've already seen during pre-season what happens when Edwards has both time and playcalling behind him... he looks solid to me. Lets hope the regular season proves Mr. Simmons wrong. :)

Given the amount of criticism Edwards has taken from B'lo fans, if he reads this stuff he must be shaking his head about fans in "deep denial" who think he could be good. "where are these fans and could they put something on youtube or come to training camp and cheer?"

My concern is whether the playcalling and the OL will work together enough to let him be good (if he can be) this year.

When Matt Cassel looked like the second coming of Joe Montana in NE in 2008 then utterly ordinary for KC in 2009,

anyone with remaining doubts outta have "got religion" that the coaching and the other 10 on the field make a huge diff to the QB play.

Of course there is the vexing question of how much Gailey had to do with the Chief's meh offense in 2009.

"Show me the Baby, and the Baby is Winning"

  5.

    Thanks Gangsta Kitty.

The fine print was confusing to me - the played 9 regular games or been on the regular squad a whole season.

I knew it was not only rookies but didn't get the criteria for a vet.

    Now I get:

Brohm is eligible despite being on the 53 man roster and playing at the end of last season b'cause he hasn't played in 9 games or been carried a whole season yet.

Lankster was on the regular squad all last season, Youboty is a vet. So neither is eligible for PS.

Ditto Chad Simpson, as a vet picked up from Indy not eligible for PS.

Bottom line, Brown's list that both of us linked to on PS eligibility is just that, a list of who could be put on the PS, not a clue to the team's thinking.

    And Simpson is already gone.

Gonna be interesting to see what else falls out, especially if we can pick up some decent OL and LB other teams might drop.

I hope it's not all "Friends and Family", Foschi may have played for Gailey but he looked bad last week.

  6. http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/09/04/practice-squad-eligibility/

Can anyone explain the rules on practice squad eligibility? I never tried to figure it out b4

Kinda strange list to me in a few places - Spiller and Bell listed at RB along with "Whodat?" Anderson

On O would this mean Chad Simpson and Hardy made the roster or that they are O-u-t?

    Ditto on Lankster and Youboty?

If matched against the Depth chart is this a clue to how many at each position Bills are thinking of keeping, or is it a red herring

  7. I was watching last night when Chris Brown broke down last year's standings. Fins 7-9, Jets 9-7, Pats 10-6. Where's the dominant team? We were 6-10, a couple plays from being right in the thick of it, and we're improved. It's not like we're trying to catch up with the 16-0 Pats of a few years back.

Every time anybody discusses the AFC East, they talk about the Fins, Pats, and Jets. We are a total afterthought. Looking at last year's standings, it just doesn't make any sense. We were one game from being tied with Miami. Had we won that first game against New England and all other games played out the same, we'd have been tied with Miami, and both the Jets and Pats would've been 9-7. Two games difference.

There is no respect for this team. I can't wait till the opener. Really.

You make a number of valid points. I rolfed when I saw that "sleeper" prediction article about Miami as a "perennial playoff contender" because in the last three years they went 1-15, playoffs next year, 7-9 last year and the Browns making a significant upgrade in quarterback.

So I agree with you, the media is just over the top ignorant in disrespecting the Bills, ignoring or minimizing any talent they acquire (Spiller!) and ignoring last year's strengths. 'Cuz with other teams, they are writing about last year's strengths, except for Buffalo and we did have some strengths on 2ndary and special teams.

But you know, when the Bills were going to Superbowls every year, it was the same deal. Especially St Louis. I loathe and despise several StL sportswriters because of how mindlessly bashing they were of the Bills in those years, and when the Greatest Show on Turf went bankrupt quickly, I will confess I laughed at the wailing. If a sportswriter did some homework he could have looked at injuries to the OL and personnel changes and seen Trouble Ahead and commented intelligently.

I think our own GM Nix said it best, though. "Don't tell me about the labor pains, show me the baby....We've got to show you the baby, and the baby is winning"

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/31/gailey-wants-to-show-bills-fans-the-baby/

**** the media. Just win, Baby!

  8. To all of the posters who endlessly whine about how the Bills get no respect from the national media and are ignored in discussions of the AFC East:

They are ignored for good reason. They are irrelevant in every sense of the word. Perpetually mediocre, overwhelmingly boring, and completely devoid of any superstar, recognizable, or even interesting players.

(...) Because we have a coach nobody knew was still looking for work and a stable of boring, bottom-of-the-league quarterbacks.

The Bills might not finish last in the AFC East, but it isn't the media pundits' fault for the Bills irrelevance and mediocrity - that was and is firmly established at the top.

Wow, I think you need to be a little more mindlessly negative and critical of our team.

I don't think you've really articulated your feelings sufficiently in the absence of any offered examples or basis for your opinions.

Fortunately, you have plenty of role models in the media so I'm certain you will excel in time.

  9. ENJOY EVERYONE! As promised to all!

Buffalo Bills vs Detroit Lions http://atdhe.net/22917/watch-buffalo-bills-vs-detroit-lions

OK, last time it was vShare plugin required. I downloaded.

Put a toolbar on Firefox which Firefox wouldn't let it make visible, and tried to change my homepage to Bling.

Now it is saying Veetle player required.

I appreciate the streams, but is this going to be asking me to install a different piece of software I have to investigate/vet/figure out what it did every week?

    Please comment/explain.

    Thanks!

  10. I'm not trying to be facetious here, but I'm genuinely curious about the perceived strengths/weaknesses of our division foes amongst Bills fans. Some are obvious (of course the Patriots are head and shoulders above us in the passing game, and the Jets have the league's best overall defense).

One thing that they all have that we don't (yet) is what I might call, a culture of winning.

    What is that?

Dunno exactly. Extra focus and consistent execution?

The habit to keep giving it one's all, even if the team is down, because one trusts that one's coaches have a plan that gives a chance to come back if the team executes?

Trust that one's teammates will keep giving it all?

Habits of hard work and then harder work?

Competitive fire? "Just give me the d*** ball!"

I dunno what it is exactly. I just know I didn't see it from the Bills last year and I was worried about it the first preseason game.

  11. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5516884

First off, must you wear your "bling" to practice or even in a game? I remember in High School we were not allowed to wear anything at all! This guy is wearing an earing to practice that is worth more than many households annual income. What a d-bag and I am glad he lost it. I just can't resist the LOLz.

Man, you have a low bar for d-bag-hood. What words do you save for people who rob banks or kick puppies or stuff?

If I were him, I'd be making reeeeeeeal nice to all the grounds keepers, dropping the big hint that Xmas would come early to anyone who found the thing and gave it back.

  12. Hmmm.....If this ex-player has the correct birthday (6/13/46) listed in his profile, I have some questions. Nobody on the Bills roster between 1967-1972 was born on that day. Nobody on the 1967 team was born in 1946. If you assume that only the birth year is right in the profile, three players played from 1968-1972 with the Bills and were also born in 1946. So, either this person is (A) full of it or (B)got their birthday wrong in their profile and didn't know what year they started with the Bills when they posted their farewell. Just for fun, the Bills went 17- 64- 3 between 1967-1972 including two 1 win seasons (1-12-1 in 1968 and 1-13 in 1971).

Personally I wouldn't post my correct birthdate in a public forum.

So if you want to play "guess the player" I would go with the years

    Just sayin'

  13. This is not a knock against the board, actually its the opposite.....wonderful place to hang out.

I am going to tell you a little secret but this will change your attitude about your threads and comments!

    Are you ready?

I played for the Buffalo Bills 1967-1972. I read your comments and I now understand the fans better. Just a little warning here!

The players do frequent the message boards, and they do care what you write and yes I personally know 1 former player that posts here!!! Yep, it is true! If you investigate, you could easily figure it out! I did ! I PMed the guy and we now chat from time to time!

So why leave the board now? No player or former player is interested reading garbage about why a player should be waived or why he is overpaid. These are proud, proud former star college football players. The career is short, the physical burden is high and the players are just people. We all have emotions and nobody enjoys bashing! The Buffalo fans are the best but by far the most frustrated.

I will stop by from time to time and read some topics but my responding days are over.

    -DIEHARD 1967

Hmmmmm now I will put on my thinking cap. Those were the years when I learned to love football, watching with my grandfather every Sunday.

    Bills of course whenever possible.

Your profile says from 2008. Gotta ask: Why leave now?

This has been a tough board on some of the players for years. "Waive" or "overpaid" have been voiced for years.

Road rash making for sensitive skin just now?

Can I offer you some Nu-skin, or a bunch of gauze pads and Kling? I like silvadene myself but polysporin is popular.

I hear trash talked about my industry every day of the week (I work in R&D for a major pharmaceutical company).

I can weigh the worth of the comments according to the speaker's knowledge. Sometimes they speak some truth, sometimes "truth hurts"

Generally, you have to respect someone before their opinion matters.

Why is it different for a player?

You can call me overpaid if you like at a fraction of NFL base. Won't upset me.

Relative to a firefighter, an EMT or a teacher, it's totally true in my opinion!!!!

Those are people who put it out there, risk their lives, and the typical pay isn't much. Or a teacher. Or even a doctor.

Relative to the human worth and impact some professions have every professional athlete can be called "overpaid"

Hey, one of the projects I'm working on (if successful) will fill an unmet need to cure a debilitating disease.

Am I underpaid, relative to someone who just plays a game?

It's a free market. There's an old cartoon:

"Why do scientists get paid a pittance while professional baseball players earn millions?"

"Would you pay $50 to watch a scientist at work?"

    "OK, I get your point"

It is what it is, and I'll miss your posts.

If you feel different after a while, we'll leave a key under the mat for you.

  14. Chris Brown already announced this on his Fan Friday blog.

You didn't complete the quote. He announced that Brown will be the 3rd QB. Either they'll only keep 2 QBs on the active roster and Brown will be 3rd on the ps, or they'll keep 3 QBs on the active roster and Brown will be the third. Either way, Brohm or Fitzy are getting cut.

    Linky?

    The quote I saw was

"Bills GM Buddy Nix in a recent interview on the Shredd and Ragan show (103.3 The Edge) up here in Buffalo confirmed that they’re only keeping three. My feeling is that Brian Brohm and Ryan Fitzpatrick are likely the two QBs fighting for the one remaining spot. Brown will be the third QB, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be on the 53-man squad."

This quote seems rather less definitive, Nix says they are keeping three, it is Chris Browns opinion that Fitz and Brohm are the two duking it out and that Brown will be on the 53 man squad.

Not that his opinion isn't worth listening to, but he ain't Chan or Nix.

Personally I think they'll keep Brohm and Fitz and put Brown on the practice squad. I think there are going to be NFL-experienced QB and higher-round draft picks

tossed onto practice squads all over the country. We may be starting to respect Nix and Gailey, but to the rest of the country they're still a joke so I think a

7th-rounder they pick is relatively safe.

  15. I think you are probably onto something:

    http://forums.buyscripts.in/template-modifications/2584-offer-your-own-toolbar-your-site-make-money.html

    and

    http://buyscripts.in/make-money.html

I simply won't install this sort of stuff. I just don't trust it. I'll live with replays on NFL.com rather than compromise the security of my computer.

That's absolutely your choice not to install, and understandable.

Before installing I googled vshare and checked it out the sites offering it with McAfee. I saw no red flags or negative reviews.

I considered it an acceptable risk based on the data. Scans afterwards showed no problem (oh, and I found the toolbar. it appears innocuous)

As far as I can tell on the scripts/menus thing, the idea is to advertise to make money. Many of my favorite blogs do this. Alert the media.

I think they might make about enough to pay for the webhosting, but if the blogger makes a little $$ it really doesn't bother me, provided it doesn't start with the annoying popups.

Discloser: I am NOT associated with the vshare guy in any way, I just don't want to see a pig pile of negativity on someone providing a service some of us value.

  16. What is the deal with the vshare toolbar? Are you getting paid to force people to install it?

and I'm very serious about the question.

Not everyone is literate in these matters. If you're really just doing this to make a buck on our community - then no thank you. Providing a service is one thing, but taking advantage of people is another. So, until we get a satisfactory response on the nature of that toolbar then your link will be removed.

What vshare toolbar? I use Firefox as a browser. No toolbar installed that I can see. How do I check for this?

I really appreciated the feed, worked like a charm and good quality.

  17. Let me say that I miss Bobby April right now. Bruce DeHaven and his coverage unit is absolutely terrible. Just wanted to vent.

Other than that - Trent looked great yesterday!

I feel your pain, I was covering my eyes myself

This may be one area where it's legitimately hard to judge from preseason.

Reason: coach wants to focus on evaluation 2nd and 3rd stringers playing O and D.

special teams get the dregs, esp. on coverage

Give ST a few weeks to gel with a reasonably firm roster during the season b4 you despair

  18. Some ideas:

    CJ Thriller

CJ "The End Zone Filler" Spiller

    CJ "Defense Killer" Spiller

    CJ "Blood" Spiller

    What's yours?

    Don't want a nickname.

Just want a toast: "It's Spiller Time!" and hope that is 'nuff said

Sort of like Bruce Smith in the old days. He didn't need no stinkin' nickname. It was just...."BRUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!"

  19. simmer down john boy

every preseason, without fail, all across the nation, football fans either book their sb plane tickets or cry into their wheaties

    and for what? for nuthin

cuz after decades of watching the nfl i have learned on thing: preseason means nothing

oh fans will come in here and offer all kinds of rationalizations why this time it means something. dont listen. it means nothing

no. thing. nah. ting. nada. zilch. zippo. antidisestablishmentarianism

you may now return to your regularly scheduled gushing

Hmmmm, don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.

Are you trying to insinuate or imply that preseason doesn't mean anything? *g*

I think preseason usually means something, but what it means isn't as simple as looking at the W and L because of the starters playing limited time.

That may be what you're saying? For example, it clearly means nothing that the Bills won easily last night

When Palmer and the first string O were playing 1st Q, the Bengals roared unimpeded down the field and their punter was observed collecting cobwebs.

If that O stayed in, I hope we would have made adjustments on D (I think we did), but it's a cinch to think the score would have differed.

So the "something" the preseason means last night to Cincy is their starting O appears to be in full working order and their backup Q is competent.

The "something" the preseason means to our D is -- where did the pass coverage go? We used to have some, last year?

Either coverages were being blown all over the field, or the coaches need to return to the chalkboard for better schemes.

Give the DL better cleats so they can follow the receivers or something or at least take away their "twitter" accounts.

Let's just say "Mr Freeze" got thawed.

Last year the preseason to us meant our OL sucked and couldn't adjust, and our O was impotent - I would say that conclusion was proven correct, wouldn't you?

This year the preseason indications are that our OL/playcalling can make adjustments and it appears possible we will field a competent NFL-caliber offense.

This is good news that Bills games may have a >50% chance of at least being fun to watch again.

Our run D also looked promising for improvement. I liked Andra Davis when he was in.

Anyway, I can't agree that preseason means nothing.

Preseason W and L on the other hand, got to agree they don't mean much.

  20. So true. Not the popular thing to say around here, but Jackson should be the one that's traded, not Lynch. The money is right for willing partners and he's more attractive because he's not one strike from a suspension. Plus, when people take off their rose colored sunglasses, it's evident Lynch is just a better player.

    It wasn't evident last year.

He may have the potential to be a better player. I'm from Missouri, Show Me
