  1. Im sure they studied the possible events vs the cost and schedule of an indoor venue (both in place and downtown, and likely Amherst as well).

    It wasnt worth it

I dont think Buffalo the market is a big draw for large events that require a football stadium.  The downtown arena is adequate for 99% of possible events.  The indoor stadium space has become quite crowded and competitive.  Especially with Cleveland and Nashville joining the fray.

  2. Is Cleveland known as the city of triangles or something?

Did the designing firm of the stadium have some sort of bonus structure based on the number of triangles crobarred into the design?

In my opinion, the stadium is super ugly.  That triagular wall that just has that corporate logo on it is gross.  Reminds me of the giant pointless blue wall around the Sabres' arena.

  3. Lots of norris' points come on the pp.

I wish they sabres had someone coaching our special teams.  Appert really should be coaching Buff State or SUNY Oswego.  I don't expect the pp to be any more productive.  The sabres are treating the symptoms and not the problem.

Maybe you right but I think a tournament like this would do better than the All-Star game and skills competition that goes along with the All-Star weekend festivities.

I had some doubts, but this has been a smashing success for the NHL.  It has infiltrated the main stream.  Its great that fist fights were the backbone of that (and shows why Bettman has resisted out-lawing fighting).

Im one who doesnt mind the ASG for what it is.  Same goes with MLB too.  Some kind of international tournament seems like it should be a permanent replacement though, I agree.   With how this has gone its a no-brainer.  Its a good way to increase participation from 32 teams.  Also you get to host it in multiple venues.  Possibly even work a 4(5?)-way skills competition in there too.

Watching these 4 nations play one another has been fun and it's been successful for the NHL. I could see them making this a yearly event. Looking forward to USA vs Canada tomorrow night. Hoping USA wins but with all the injuries I think Canada takes it.

I strongly suspect that this will/would lose its lustre if it is a regular thing.  The US/Canada thing was a result of NHL players not being able to represent their countries in quite some time and a whole generation of stars at the ready.

There are international tournaments in the years to come, better tournaments that are more inclusive than just NHL players that make it better (Finland will be much stronger, as will Russia... well, Russia will be in the tournaments I think).  Plus you get some other nations like Slovakia.  We will have Olympics and World Cup.  This tournament will (rightly) seem like small potatoes after that and I can see a lot of players opting out.

This "Four Nations" thing wont nearly come close to re-creating what we have this year IMO.  It would need to change.

Playing the International card is something the NHL needed/needs to do though. The strong footing overseas is something unique to the sport that the other major NA sports don't have.  It brings out all sorts of possibilities.

  6. I wouldnt boo an anthem.  Just feels like bad mojo.

I honestly dont blame canadians for booing though to be honest.  The sitting president has recently stated that he wants to make their country the 51st state.  I would think we would be pretty pissed off too if the shoe was on the other foot.

They need to bring this kind of fire back. Lindy is definitely the coach that can do it. We just need to see it.

Lindy has always been a wimp.  Wimpy player and a wimpy coach with wimpy teams.  this is the outlier incident.

They keep turning crop after crop of highly regarded prospects into soft teams so I still feel the problems are obviously larger. Wish I could be a fly on the wall for a month in the building to get a better beat on just how bad it is and why. They don’t have serious people in charge at any key position.

Most of my life the Sabres put out a competitive team despite Buffalo not being a destination city, uncertainty at owner, threats of moving, not a lot of money, etc. They always had at least a few serious hockey people in place though…

I know when Pegula bought the team, he scrambled and read a bunch of books about hockey.  He also had a few conversations with Jim Devellano that have been cited (like in Nolan's book when he says that Pegula said something like "Jim Devellano once told me that if you are going to be bad, then be really bad).

I am convinced that he heard or read that toughness and fighting have no correlation to winning and success.  The organization as a whole have rejected tough play throughout his ownership, and that philosophy has been accelerated through the Botterill and now the Adams regimes.  To the defense of that, the rejection of toughness dates back into Regier's time.

While it is tough to pick out "toughness" in analytics and stats.  However, hockey can be a brutal and territorial game.  Teams enjoy the physical night off they get from the Sabres.  Every time the Sabres manage to crawl back in any sort of chase, and has a semi-important game, the opposition grinds them into dust.    If they ever did manage to qualify for the playoffs, Im not sure they physically survive into the 4th game to get swept.
