  1. Sooo lets waste our top ten pick on a guy who has character issues and is going to miss the first 4-6 games? pass

Uh, who cares about the first 4-6 games of the 2010 season...what difference does that make in regards to the value of our top 10 pick on someone who may or may not be a good NFL player? If we traded for Ben it wouldnt be for only the 2010 season, so I fail to see the relevance of of his suspension in regards to the value of our #9 pick...

Oh, and further more, that rookie we take at say #9 most likely has a minimal impact in those 4 to 6 weeks anyway as they are adjusting to the NFL...if we took someone like Claussen he may not even see the field in those weeks...

  2. Jason Taylor has signed for two years with the New York Jets. Another good signing for the division rival Jets. Coupled with the Pats signing Torry Holt today, the Bills just keep falling farther and farther out of any dream for competing in the division. Seems like every other day, someone from the AFC East, besides Buffalo makes a good signing improving themselves. Gonna be a long year for the Buffalo faithful.

Everyone needs to relax...2010 isnt, nor was it ever inteded to be, a return to glory. Its a year for a new staff to come in and put their stamp on this team and build a foundation with the young players we have and the ones we are about to draft. Its the year to start the development of guys like Nelson, Maybin, Brohm, Hardy, Johnson, our rookies from this draft, etc...

I am not concerned about Taylor who will be done in a year or two, just about the same time our guys will be hitting their stride in development. Let these other guys sign these aging Vets like Taylor, Holt, LT, etc for a run at the SB the next 2 seasons while we build our foundation to be a leader of this division over the next 10 years.

  3. I'd have to completely disagree with your notion its more important to be athletic at the NT position than at Quarterback.

Let me elaborate more clearly on what I meant...

A QB doesnt have to be fast or even nimble to be mobile in the pocket (See Kurt Warner, Brady, Montanna, etc, etc). For example, Brady had literally one of the worst combines (some say the worst) in terms of athleticism in the history of the combine. However, Brady is considered one of the most mobile pocket passers in the NFL, in fact Ron Jaworski did a whole piece about this on Brady for ESPN. The reason is because of Bradys instincts, pocket preseence, and his footwork in the pocket allow him to side step the pressure and step up and make the throws.

A NT on the other hand needs to be able to get out his stance fast, he needs to be able to shed blocks, shuffle around the line, beat the OL to the point of engadgement, etc. Their effectiveness has a lot to do with strength and athleticism where a QB can be good and even Elite if he is intelligent, has good touch on the ball, accurate, etc. In other words, its much tougher IMHO for a NT to over come these short comings than say a QB who can make up for a lack of athleticism with a number other intangibles...

  4. This is not a concern for me. In the NFL, 60% of all plays from scrimmage are passing plays. My instinct differs from yours. I believe his best days are ahead of him as far as weight and discipline. We'll see.

I do have to say that I am concerned about his mediocre initial quickness (which I just found out about, via this thread). At the Pro level, these guys fire off the ball and with their explosion, and pad level, once they get the defender going in a direction, it's all over for that play.

I don't care how much anyone weighs, all these guys are strong enough to capitalize on the initial advantage once they seize it. All these O-linemen can pull/push a truck. If Cody's going to get consistently beaten to the punch, that is a concern, in my book.

Still he was a monster in college. I don't really know what the outcome of this is going to be but it sure will be interesting.

Pretty much exactly what I was thinking when I read this report on him...if he cant move well or get off the ball quickly then thats going to be an issue at the next level in my opinnion.

When you factor in how many DT's become busts at the next level, this report isnt really reassuring of his potential. Not to mention his questionable motivation given the poor shape he keeps himself in...

  5. You guys miss the key point of the post I originally put up from roto world where they referenced him as a big fat blob who cant move and then went on to reference him as a media creation.

Of course 40 times are not the most important part for a NT, however, he scored poorly in almost every category in regards to movement and quickness and that could be a problem at the next level.

  6. From roto...

Based on forty-yard dash time, Terrence Cody will become the slowest defensive tackle to be drafted in the last 20 years this week.

Cody's 5.66 forty time is rivaled only by former seventh-rounder Corey Swinson (5.62 in 1985), fifth-rounder Tim Roberts (5.51 in 1992), and 2009 Patriots second-round pick Ron Brace (5.51). "This guy doesn't have any first-step quickness," observed a scout of Cody. "He's a big, fat blob," added one NFC personnel man. "He's a big media creation. He cannot move at all."

Not too flatering...this doesnt mean he cant over come this, I mean Tom Brady had one of the worst combines ever in terms of athleticism. However, Cody's position is quite a bit more affected by athleticism, or lack there of. I have not been high on him at all thus far, and this sure didnt do a whole lot to change my mind...

  7. First of all, I pay zero attention to peoples opinions that don't have to be held accountable for their suggestions or ideas. Second, I don't even follow your logic anyway. I am talking top available playmakers in the eyes of the FO, what 1st hand knowledge do you have of Haden anyway? This team needs best player available. I have doubts about the entire team until they "show me the baby".

Um, did you read what I wrote? Because that is exactly what I said in regards to the no one knows who the FO ranks as their best player available...

And I will make any wager you want that if Joe Haden is there at 9 that we WONT take him...we dont need him at all and it would be fan base suicide by the FO...

And your last statement makes no sense...you doubt the whole team until they show you the baby? So you are saying you blatantly ignore talent and circumstance and favor stat sheets...another Madden junkie

  8. I must be missing something on having to get a LT in the #9 spot. At our draft position we should get the BEST at a given position. Getting the 3rd or 4th best tackle with that pick does not add up for me. This team is short on playmakers at all positions. Until this team is a bonafide playoff monster, all positions should be open for a transition. If we get too many great players at a given position then you can move a guy for draft picks, but that is certainly not our problem now.

Well for starters, the "best" prospect at another position may not be a better player than the 3rd best prospect at another...

Secondly, the best prospect at the other position may not be from a position we need...for instance, there is no way we take Joe Haden at #9 if he is still there even though he could be the highest rated prospect on the board at #9 (if Cle doesnt take him).

Thirdly, every team ranks players based on their own evaluation...so just because Mel Kiper says he is the best at his position doesn't mean the team feels the same way...

  9. Okung

    Davis

    Trent

    Bulaga

    Next 2

    Brown

    Campbell

I would have a hard time drafting Davis at 9 over Trent because of the risk, but I actually think he is more talented, and rivals Okung on talent. That being said, I think all 3 are still pretty close on talent level still...

  10. I know there has been talks of Albert Haynesworth being on the trade block. Wouldn't it be smart for the Bills to go after him? Not sure what it would take to get him away from Washington but the idea of Haynesworth in a Bills uniform seems pretty awesome. A good trade may be Stroud and a 2nd round pick. Thoughts??

Been discussed several times aleady on this board...

    1. He wants out of Was because he does not want to play in a 3 -4 which is what we now play.

    2. Was has emphatically denied shopping him...so who really knows what his availability is.

  11. You have to quit drinking the cool aid that comes with every new coach and new GM. Take a good look at the film. We stunk last year. The defense stuck last year. The Pass D stats were simply an aberration due to the lousy play of the run D. When teams needed to pass on us they did and did it easily. Usually they did not have to.

The Defense switch does not play to our strengths, Stroud, Mitchell, Maybin, Williams, Kelsay are all in unfamiliar positions. How you can say we are better for it is bizarre. Poz was not a very good MLB maybe he will as one of two ILB. We are woefully prepared for this D from a personnel standpoint. We have two average free agents that played this D before. That is it.

Henne was steady but not spectacular. He is young and improving, no one is calling him a bust. He is their starter for 2010. No big question mark about that. Who is our starter? Big question marks about that. TE, everyone is calling him a bust. Brohm, bust in GB, can he play? who knows. Ryan - gimme a break, will never be more than marginal. He looks like a thin Alex Van Pelt. Nice guy, smart, but average at the game.

Why do you insist on comparing our QB situation to Mia in order to defend Henne? I never once made a comparison, so what does that have to do with anything I said? Henne is still very unproven and inconsistent. Does he have promise...sure...but he isnt even in the top 20 of the best starters in this league at this point. Can he be, sure, but he isnt yet and until he can prove to be a consistent and solid QB then Mia is going to struggle.

And this D does suit us well. It suits our secondary well, our LB's well, and more importantly players like Maybin and Schobel will have a real opporunity to pressure the QB more in this style than before. Not to mention A. Davis is pretty good player who will have a big impact on this team. Our run D should be better as a result of this change. Our secondary is one of the best in the NFL whether you want to believe it or not.

QB is a big question mark on this team for sure, but we still dont know what Brohm can do (he is far from a bust...cant call a 2nd year QB who has not even had a chance to play yet a bust just becuase in his rookie year another rookie QB adjusted faster the speed of the game), we dont know if we will get Vick or Campbell (2 guys we have reported interest in), we dont know if we will draft Claussen, McCoy, etc...so it may not be settled as of today, but honestly it may not be as bad as you think come week 1 at QB.

  12. As you say, we won 6 games last year despite the fact that we sucked. We should have won 2 but some other teams also suck as bad as we do. Don't compare us to teams that suck and and say because we suck less than they do that there is progress.

In 2010 we will not win a divisional game for the second time in three seasons unless we get very lucky.

MIAMI HAS MAJOR QB QUESTIONS?!?!?! No we have major QB questions. We have a 1/2 talent from Harvard or Yale. Another guy that lost out to a 7th round pick and a California nutty bar that even TO had pity for and did not b!tch a lot at him. No team has a bigger QB question than we do.

Our defense last year sucked and it will suck this year. This years D will play an entirely new scheme primarily comprised of players that fit the old D scheme that they sucked at and not the new scheme. Then the pass D numbers were skewed because the run D was the worst in the league. This D on paper looks atrocious.

I guess you didnt watch last season because we should have won 5 other games with even average QB play. Our D had the 2nd rated pass D last year despite being ravaged by injuries and its best playmaker not getting on the field full time in the first part of the season (Byrd).

The switch plays to the strenghts of our team too on D...

You didnt provide a single point to your rebuttal about Miami having big question marks other than to bash our own QB's. I didnt say we had a better QB situation, but the fact remains, Miami has big question marks at QB still as Henne has been less than stellar. That comment has ZERO to do with our QB's so why you even bother going there is beyond me. Henne has potential, but he isnt there yet...So, my point was before we start annoiting Miami a power lets see what Henne can do first.

We were this supposed up and coming sleeper team 2 years ago because Trent was supposed to be blossoming. Well guess what, Trent blew and still blows and we still suck because of it. So until Henne can make blossom into a better QB, Mia will still struggle, so the jury is still out on them.

  13. Actually, I think 1st rounder, plus Lee Evans is something the Steelers might give a sniff. They'd probably still want something else (like a future 2nd round pick). Since they dumped Santonio Holmes, they need a top line receiver. Evans in Pittsburgh would be a good fit.

What? You think they would want more than a 1st and Evans? You must be a Trent supporter if you think Evans has such little value because Evans only issue has been Trent Edwards and the rest of the bumbs passing the ball.

First off, we would be stupid to trade for Ben and include Lee...Ben throwing to Lee would make Lee a top 10 producing WR. Who would catch the ball here without Lee? Secondly, if we traded a 1st, Lee and a future 2nd round pick it would rank right up there with that stupid trade by Dallas to get Roy.

  14. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/...e-is-available/

If it could happen would you guys want to?

Here is the issue: Who does this make sense for? White isnt the scat back type Gailey is looking for, so doesnt make sense to us. Not to mention, Whites value is less than Lynchs value who can potentially fetch a 3rd or maybe a 2nd rounder while White will likely be moved for a 5th, 4th at best.

Titans are looking to trade them because they are set at RB already, so why trade him for another RB who is one mistake away from a half season suspension and all kinds of off field baggage?

I am all for trade talk, but this one just doesnt add up for me...

  15. Except we are not going to trade Lynch. None of the rumors concerning his trade are coming from OBD. Just a bunch of senseless speculation.

I assume you are referring to the comments by Nix, but if you look at the thread on that you will see that taking anything a GM says at this point before the draft is foolish. He is not going to say they are desperate to move him when they are trying to hold on to what little leverage they have to get any real value for him.

  16. With all of the upgrades on paper that our division rivals are making, things are starting to look rough for the Bills this upcoming year. So lets say the Bills have an absolutely perfect draft (for argument's sake, in everyones opinion). And lets say they somehow fill all possible needs via draft and draft day trades. How do we finish this year in our division?

Its not that simple...an A+ draft doesnt mean those guys will reach their full potential their rookie years. Last years draft was easily and A considering we got 4 starters out of the first 5 picks, and Maybin looks like he will be a starter at a position much better suited for him this year. Add to it that Byrd is Pro Bowl potential and Nelson should be a much bigger factor in the passing game this year and it looks to be like an A+ on its own.

Now, if we go out and have another A+ draft, that doesnt mean that all of these guys in this draft will be starting day 1 or really show their impact early in the season.

So, even if we do have an A+ draft, that doesnt really mean we will see a huge difference in the standings this year. It will really set us up for a big 2011, especially if previous drafted young guys like Maybin, Hardy, Johnson, Nelson, and Brohm (not drafted by us, but was a 2nd rounder 2 years ago) can come in and make an impact this year to go with it.

  17. I hope we keep Lynch. I just don't think he will bring much in return compared to his value to this team, but if he is traded Brown would be worth a shot. Injuries would be a concern, but if the price is right,he may be a nice fit. If not,I would love to see the Buffalo take Brandon Minor in the later rounds.

Sounds like Brown could be had for a 4th or 5th according to that report. So if Lynch does go as speculated, then grabbing a guy like Brown with such a low pick would be worth the risk to me too. Especially since we already have Jackson to split the load with.

  18. Lynch and a sixth for Scheffler if Scheffler is considered an above average blocking TE. I'm not sure he is.

Do people even think about these trade ideas before they post them? I doubt it...how does this make sense for either team?

    1. Den - They already have Moreno, so what value are they getting here? A guy at a position they already have talent at and a 6th rounder for a pretty good TE?

    2. Buf - What value are we getting? We lose a guy who could fetch us a valuable pick in this draft like a 3rd or 2nd potentially or be good player for us if we keep him. What do we gain? An injury prone player at a position that we already have a very promising young guy at.

How does this make any sense for either team? Even if we didnt give them Lynch and instead just traded draft picks (which would make much more sense for Den), how does that help this team? We need those picks to fill holes, not to acquire average players at positions that already have young up and coming players at them. Scheffler is a decent recieving threat, but isnt dominant or a good blocker, not to mention injury prone. For me, Nelson has way more upside as a playmaker on this offense.

  19. I am normally a very optimistic person. Especially when it comes to the Bills. However, knowing how many holes need to be filled on this team, I am concerned. Can we fill some in the draft? Yes. Should the Bills make relatively cheap moves in FA to get veteran talent or do they carry on with the trend of signing guys from other teams practice squads?

Sorry, I just think that moves can be made. If we're hoping everything can be fixed via the draft.... sorry I'm not buying it. To me that means a couple more years out.

Here is what you are missing though, we dont TRULY know what holes need to be addressed as we already have young guys at some of the apparent holes you are referring to. We have too many young unproven players with potential to really understand what holes we have. Guys like Brohm, Hardy, Johnson, Maybin, Nelson, Bell, etc. So its not relying on only the draft, its also about developing our guys hopefully under a potentially better coaching staff and schemes.

And we are a couple of years out, but thats the point and thats the plan. With a new staff and FO they are going to need to find out whats already on this team before they can understand what moves need to be made. 2010 is the year to answer questions, not return to glory. Find out what we truly have in our young inexperienced guys, draft well, and start building this team to be a real contender over the next couple of seasons.

  20. I keep seeing all over the place people saying we need to trade Lynch for a 2nd round pick. Never going to happen. Santonio Holmes showed what the market will pay for trouble makers (and Holmes is WAY more proven than Lynch is), so the Bills would be wise to keep him on the team as a 2nd RB or be willing to part with him for nearly nothing.

I wouldnt call Holmes more proven than Lynch...

More importantly, why is anyone actually taking what GM's pubicly say with any seriousness? Look at some implications...

    1. If we want Spiller at #9, why would we tip our hand or show any desperation to trade Lynch? If someone else wants Spiller, then that puts pressure on them to trade ahead of us.

    2. If we are going to trade Lynch, we need to hold to what little leverage we can. Looking to dump him kills what little leverage we have in any negotiation considering he has had off field issues, wants out, and we already have Jackson.

    3. If we try and trade him and dont find a taker willing to give us enough value back to make sense, then we have to deal with him still being on the team. So of course our GM is still going to be saying things like this publicly in case we dont move him since we are not so desperate to get rid of him that we would just dump him for nothing.

I mean come on people, anything any team or GM says this close to the draft is about as reliable as a rumor that sites "sources deep within" on these boards...
