  1. QB - we need a veteran backup to help mentor trent and be there if there is an injury b/c i dont want handman to be my #2

    RB - good here

FB - Macantyre isn't cutting it

WR - Not the best in the league but i think were good if hardy and johnson can contribute next year

TE - We need a receving tight end tht can make plays... we are probably bottom 5 in the league in TE production

OLine - Everything is good except for center... preston and fowler suck

DLine - we need an atheltic fast pass rushing defensive end... whether we obtain one from the draft or FAs, we need one bad

LB - with crowell not coming back and ellison being a ghost out there, we need a OLB tht can play with poz and mitchel

CB - when greer and youboty come back next year, and leodis having a year under his belt, we will be pretty good

S - whitner is good but we need someone to be a ball hawk and simpson just looks lost out there... i liked him as a rookie but he just seems to keep getting worse... hopefully he will return to his former self next year or maybe Wilson or Scott will start

ST - great except for Lindell.... his stats are good but since MNF and tht 49ers game, he hasn't been the same

Coaching - I am not in love with Dick but i dont think we could get anything better thts out there right now

So in conclusion we need some more pieces to the puzzle in this order

    1)DE

    2)TE

    3)C

    4)OLB

    5)QB (Veteran)

    6)FB

I like your list, although I would bump Center ahead of Tight End as I think D. Fine has some potential. Now the QB is one of debate, I am just not as optimistic as I once was on Trent due to his fragile body and psyche. If we could trade for McNabb, this team would be vastly improved. Although, with the Iggles making a playoff run, he may become less and less available next year.

I think DE, is a priority to replace Kelsay and Denney on the end (keep Kelsay as he plays hard and wouldnt be a bad back up, but dump Denney).

Center and LB are both a pressing need...could go either way with which is more important.

Tight End is something of an unknown really as we stubbornly stuck with Royal so long. I hope Fine gets more opportunity these last two games to show us he can be our guy next year so that will be one less area we need to improve. If not, I am hoping we go after a Coffman in the draft.

  2. Thanks. If you want, I can give you my address so you can come over and kick me in the balls in person.

Hahahaha...sorry man, I was just laughing actually when you made your post because I had been sitting here reflecting on all these posts today of bring in this guy and that guy and thinking, man we had a butt load of talent back then and never won the big one.

Then I saw your post...it was not meant to kick you in the balls, just mean to be humorous.

  3. Am I the only one that sees a problem with an offense that is designed to let blitzers come untouched to young, inexperienced QBs?

The topic title on this bugs me...it implies Peters is on the block which he clearly isnt...

Can you change the title to be a more accurate reflection of what this truly is...a posters personal view not a topic of any substance down at Bills Headquarters...

Maybe - "Do you think the Bills might consider trading Peters"

  4. Watching the Colts steal yet another one (they're like the anti-Bills), I couldn't help fantasizing...

Just imagine if the Bills had a Jeff Saturday instead of Presler and Fowton and a Dwight Freeney instead of the sackless millionaires Denney and Kelsey. Oh man, this team's win total just doubled. Throw in Reggie Wayne and we're Super Bowl contenders.

Sorry, I know that's not realistic, relevant or productive, but dreams are all I have left. Thank you for listening.

Oh what if we had a Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith, Andre Reed, and Thurman Thomas...oh man, we would win so many Super Bowls...

Oh wait we did and got ZERO...

  5. So You're saying we should stick with a losing head coach in Jauron instead of attempting the risk to hire someone who might be just as bad as Jauron, but also might end up being a good hire?

    I'm confused.

Not sure who this question is directed to, but I will answer it...

I dont think we should stick with DJ, but I strongly feel this team needs a PROVEN winner who KNOWS how to win games. We have a young team that doesnt know how to win. The last thing we need is another young guy who has to learn on the job just like our players.

We are young, but in this era of free agency the window of opportunity to win is about 3 years. We dont have time to develop a coach while trying to develop our team. If we had a veteran team that need a spark, then maybe, but we dont. We have a young team that just doesnt know how to win.

A coach needs to be able know how to motivate his team, adjust in game, game plan to beat the other team, make personnel decisions, evaluate talent, play to a players strengths, manage a game, manage the game clock, be able to make smart decisions at key points in the game, know when to be aggressive or conservative, etc, etc, etc.

Coordinators just dont have that kind of experience. Does it mean every one is going to fall flat on their face, not at all. But it does mean the odds are stacked against them. And with a young promising team we need someone to show them how to win, to be able to OUR COACH our opponent, and a coordinator with no real COACHING experience has a far less chance of being effective.

For every great HC transition from coordinator there are 10 total failures. You dont hear about them as they are quickly forgotten, so it seems coordinators have more success than they really do. Not to mention, their success as a coordinator often proves to be based on the personnel the HC on their existing teams built for them and not so much on their ability to lead a team.

  6. I have one more quick question in regards to Trent. How come no one wants to argue or acknoweldge that he comes recommended by Bill Walsh? Does anyone else on this team have that? And why can't we add that to Trent's resume when Bill Walsh is one of the greatest minds in football? We have to know he sees things a little bit different than us.

I grew up in Nor California where everyone is a Niner fan. Do you really want me to make you a list of all the draft picks Bill Walsh missed on? I love Walsh even though I hate the Niners, and I think he is one of the greatest football coaches and minds in history...

That being said, I can assure you there are plenty of players he was high on that didnt pan out...why you may ask...because player evaluation is not in any way easy or an exact science. People like Walsh show the ability to find great talent, but doesnt mean every guy they tab is gonna be great.

He was REALLY high on J.J. Stokes...do you remember him? Heck, you may not even know who he is becuase he was such a bust. Walsh said he saw a lot Jerry Rice in him and they traded up to get him to be the heir apparent tp Rice. He had the chance to play with supreme coaching and learn from what is considered the greatest WR of all time and yet the kid was a complete bust.

Even the great ones can be wrong...

  7. It's a damn good thing the Steelers did not go with your small thinking after Bill Cowher left.

Are you trying to say Tomlin is a great coach? Do you watch the games or just look at the record in the newspaper? He made bone head decisions that lost him a game this year, and then duplicated them and put his team in a position to lose again because of them against Dallas until Romo bailed him out with that INT he threw. He has done things like this several times last year and this year...

Truth about this guy is that his winning is hiding all his failures in his decisons. He is not winning based on coaching, he actually makes quite a bit of mistakes, but the IMMENSE talent on that team overcomes the mistakes. That is essentially the same team that won the Super Bowl with an even MORE experienced QB now, its no shock they still win.

One of my best friends is a die hard Steeler fan and he and a bunch of other Steeler fans usually watch the games at the bar we go to on Sundays to watch football. They are not sold on Tomlin and think his inexperience often hurts them. They love his fire and passion, but are not too high on him as a coach.

So, I say for the 10th time, why is this guy so highly regarded? Even announcers call him out in games for making dumb decisions...

  8. My plan........

First and foremost, cut the dead weight on the team. Denney, Kelsay most overrated highest paid DE's in the game right now, they are not worth what they are getting. Get impact players on the DL, someone who can get to the pass rusher man to man blocking. I get tired getting to the QB with blitzes only....I wouldnt mind getting Julius Peppers on one side and either Schobel or draft Brian Orakpo. Find a way to get Albert Haynesworth via FA.....I wouldnt be opposed to going after a solid LB in the draft either.....

On offense, clearly the QB spot is till a huge question mark......well that question mark can be fixed if McNabb is on the market, if not Kurt Warner has clearly showed he can still play football and would come much at a more reasonable price, McNabb may cost us draft picks......im not a fan of that unless we could steel him away.....

Pending on the QB situatuion......will determine what type WR we need.....call me crazy but we need another skilled WR that has the ability Lee Evans has, this offense needs another WR that takes heat away from Evans, who that WR is im not 100% sure. I do see some guys that might be on the trading blocks.....Chad Johnson being one, Maybe TJ whosyourmama? Thats the type WR im speaking about, and if Anquan Boldin is out there for trade or whatever reason, GET HIM!!!!! NOWAY a defense can double cover one man if Evans & Boldin are on the field......Id also look to be drafting a TE, Chase Coffman comes to mind, but not sure where hes slated to go in the draft.....but we need that TE who can stretch the field and make big plays as well.....we dont have a TE for that......

So my theory of getting to the SB is Finding ways to get another quality DT, possibly LB, draft either LB or DE.......on offense if McNabb is out there for a reasonable deal grab him, Warner is an option, Boldin is unhappy in AZ, never know what CJ will do or TJ for that matter.......

The thing is we have the cap room to make moves like this.....the even bigger question is how to get talent here, and folks thats up to PR department to do, Russ Brandon has his handsfull.......

3 quality moves at QB, DL, WR would make this team stout, and a very well thought out plan for the draft would help.

It dont have to be the players I mentioned but they have to be the same quality players, some one whos been there done that so to speak.......

And yes........currently this team has talent to win......I do think they need a boost at certain spots to get them to the next level....They better get it and get it fast cause Tom Brady is back next year and we couldnt win or even make the playoffs without him in the division, I highly doubt we make a push with him back with the pats......unless major changes happen at those postions we are not looking good.....

I dont call it rebuilding either, I call it retooling.......

    Great if it could happen...but...

Warner - 0% chance he plays anywhere other than AZ and already has said IF he plays next year it will ONLY be in AZ. So he retires or stays there.

Peppers - 95% chance he resigns in Carolina, and if not, teams more attractive than us will be offering as much money if not more, so odds of him landing here are .01%

Haynesworth - See Peppers above (although, he may be more likely than Peppers to leave his team, but not by much)

McNabb - Love this idea, and he very well could be obtainable and woudl be a great fit, however, if he leads the Eagles to the playoffs this year, especially deep, then I just dont think Philly moves him and turns their focus on acquiring Boldin or Housh.

Boldin - Stays in AZ or goes to Philly who has major interest in him.

Housh - Used to a smaller market and the cold, may see potential here, and if Philly was to land Boldin we might have a better shot at landing this guy. Any available WR I think chooses Philly and playing with McNabb and Westbrook first before considering us, so if Housh signs in Philly then maybe we have shot at Boldin.

We dont need DT, we need DE. Stroud and Co. were much better with Schobel in the game. We need help at DE and LB and you will see we have a pretty darn good interior line. LB and DE play are major factors in what the interior line can do. This is not a need for us.

  9. None of the QB's you are comparing Trent with were INJURY PRONE which Trent IS. Even if he were to develop & play great HE CAN"T stay on the field. Over the years there have been a number of players that COULD have been GREAT if they weren't ALWAYS injured. If you want to compare Trent, you need to compare him to the likes of Bobby Douglas not HOF players like Bradshaw & the others who were RARELY injured.

I know its off topic, but I personally think Bradshaw might be the most over rated QB of all time...not saying he wasnt good, but he is really over rated. That was considered by most the greatest D of all time coupled with one of the greatest running games of all time. He was the Trent Dilfer of his day...just dont screw up and we win...he didnt have to win many games for them.

Still, in his defense, you have to be good still to do that, but he gets listed as one of the greatest ever which is why I think he is over rated. He didnt win those Super Bowls for them, that D and run game did most the work.

  10. ...remember when we were 5-1....

lol...I remember posting a post that said I was worried about making the playoffs when were 5-1 and said that our schedule is not nearly as easy as the posters say since Mia, Jets, and NE were all starting to play good at that time and didnt look like easy wins to me.

Of course, at that time I was mostly concerned with out O Line play as to why we would struggle because Lynch hadnt really had a big game yet, and Trent was stinking the joint when teams like Oakland and St Louis were getting penetration at the line.

  11. I think phypon's line

shows that he knows that it would not get to the point of fans making football decisions(which I agree would be catastrophic).

The goal was to make a change for the good in Buffalo, which it might do.

And this is just my take, but just because the NFL is against the GB model does not in any way mean that it is a bad one. It just means that the rest of the owners see it as some sort of threat to their own pocketbooks.

I didnt say the way GB is run is viewed as bad...I said it adds to how far fetched this original post was because its impossible to happen per the NFL's stance on it and just another reason why I put a  as just my oringal response which started these lines of posting...

  12. The issue I have is that a lot of people are ASSUMING Trent will turn out to be the Akili Smiths, Ryan Leafs, Andre Wares, Todd Marinovichs, Heath Shulers, Cade McNowns, etc, etc, etc as you say. How, with what we have seen in his good and bad, can you make that judgement yet. I don't think one can.

True...but here is my issue with Trent, who I was high on coming into the year and even bought his jersey and still wear it every Sunday.

His comeback wins were a little over rated. When you comeback and win, it over shadows the struggles earlier in the game. 2 of those comeback wins he was bailed out by amazing plays by other players. If we lose those games, people start talking about how Trent stuggled most of the game instead of how he led the game winning drive. Even the Hardy catch was in my mind a lucky break as Hardy has shown to drop a lot of easeier passes and that pass was not a great pass, Hardy just made a great play.

Still, something has to be said for making the comeback and getting us the win, but if you look at his overall body of work in those games, they were mostly marginal and against HORRID defenses and teams. Against Oakland he was terrible when pressured and it wasnt until Oakland stopped bringing as much pressure that he started to move the ball. In fact its also why he struggled against St. Louis too...

So, fast forward to post concussion. He not only continues to be marginal (exception KC) but also begins to just stink it up with turnovers, bad decisions, and a complete lack of confidence. Now, I am FINE with a young QB being marginal and stuggling as it is to be expected.

My REAL issue comes down to this...

He regressed even more when faced with pressure and adversity then became so gun shy that when we gave him tons of time to throw he still couldnt let the ball go, even when replays showed WR's open. The TRUE GREATS you listed above kept slinging the ball when they struggled...they kept pressing on and played through it. I did not see that from Trent.

So now we have a guy who has proven physically FRAGILE at every level of football he has played now showing he may potentially also have a FRAGILE mind set and ego. Thats not good when his biggest selling point was his alleged poise and confidence.

I want the kid to turn it around, but he has shown me something that really concerns me and something not a lot of players overcome...I hope hes the exception.

  13. The original post was a crazy idea, but it wasn't a stupid one.

To say that fans don't know football is dumb. Most uf us played football at one time, and not just at the high school level either. It's not rocket science.

Also, the people of Green Bay, Wisconsin seem to be doing okay running their team.

Because you understand the rules of football as a player (I played football and started through college on a top 10 ranked team) doesnt mean you "KNOW" football from a decision making side, understanding the COMPLEX rules of the salary cap, identifying talent (not just watching a few highlights on ESPN), understanding the immensly complicated schemes and systems to maximize your players talents, etc, etc.

Very DISTINCT difference between knowing the rules of football and truly understanding football. I personally would NOT ever make the claim to know all the eseential ends and outs about running a football team, and I assure you I know quite a bit about football.

Second, GB is such a poor example to go to. Do you even understand how that works up there or just making assumptions? The fans dont pick the coach as the idea presented in the original post suggest we do by raising our own money and picking the guy, so how this is a comparison is beyond me. Second, to add to how far fetched this original post is, if you truly understood what was going on in GB you would also know that NFL is dead set against what GB has ever being duplicated again for another NFL team...

    So thats a double :rolleyes:B-)

I am assuming your point here is (as you didnt mention one) that these QB's stunk in their first 2 years and then became great and that you are implying TE could do the same...

This argument is old and tired for one and completely biased. For every one of the HOF caliber players you list here, I can list 100 Akili Smiths, Ryan Leafs, Andre Wares, Todd Marinovichs, Heath Shulers, Cade McNowns, etc, etc, etc...that stunk or struggled early in their career and NEVER got better.

So these comparisons are such lousy points and only paint a tiny piece of a picture. By this Logic we should keep JP Losman as he has the best season betwen him and TE under his belt and has NEVER had 2 FULL years to start full time, let alone play consistently in the same system, so he still could turn out to be the next Steve Young by this logic.

  15. Ithink almost everyone who responded to this post does not understand what I am saying. Let me try to clarify- I'm not saying the Bills should trade Peters this offseason, even though he will undoubtedly hold out again and the team will suffer for it. I'm not saying it would be ideal for the Bills to trade Peters at all. All I'm saying is the Bills FO has shown in the past that they are willing to let great players walk rather than pay them what they demand in free agency and if that is the case, if the options are let Peters go for nothing or trade him and get a couple of day one draft picks for him, the choice is clear. Does anyone disagree with that?

I know we would all like to keep our great players but the fact is Mr. Wilson is a cheapskate who won't pay for real talent and I could see him letting Peters walk instead of paying top dollar to keep him. (even though he will overpay mediocre players like Schobel and Kelsay). That is all I'm trying to say.

There is a very distinct difference in retaining players and grossly over paying players to stay. We let players like Clements (thank god) walk in FA because he wanted an ABSURD amount of money and was not WORTH what he wanted. Look at the SF defense...are they really much better off after giving him what was the biggest contract in history for a defensive player?

That doesnt make us cheap, that makes us smart.

  16. Ask yourself why other teams have had good luck hiring coordinators around the league. Miami, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Atlanta, etc. To me, the damning evidence of the lack of luck we've had hiring these new coaches is solely on our incompetent front office.

First off, take Pitt off your list. Tomlin keeps making coaching blunders (even cost them a win and almost another one against Dallas by repeating the mistake until Romo bailed him out). He wins because of talent on that team...that team is essentially the same team that won the Super Bowl just 3 years ago.

For every succesful coordinator hire there are many more flounders. Mularkey and Williams were going to be hired by someone those years we hired them as they were both hot coordinators. So who ever hired them was going to have a big miss at the HC position. The problem is, most people remember the successes but forget about the tons of misses.

  17. I want them to reflect the personality of their head coach. That will show that they respect the HC and want to follow his lead. I don't see how this could go wrong.

What we need is some swagger. I dont want to see us too reliant on any one thing. We need to be a threat in the passing game, not just a ram it down your throat running team IMHO. Sure, I want to be able to run it down the throats of teams, but we have to a QB we can lean on when the running game isnt there.

We just need some toughness and swagger to our team. Teams need to know they better bring their A game when they face the Bills...

  18. Not really. From what you've posted here, rather than saying that the idea will never work because of blah blah blah, you've gone and turned into something completely different.

Hey, if you think the idea is ridiculous (and I know it is a stretch), you could have said why. From your responses, it is not clear that you even understand the idea.

oh geezus...fine you want a real answer, here it is...

FANS DO NOT KNOW FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They think they do because they get to make their decisions after the fact and they play fantasy football so they think they are geniuses...truth is, most the crap they whine about are things they supported at the time they happen. They flip flop more than a presidential candidate, and thats just the blunt truth.

I remember being on here and most were pumped up when we hired Mularkey for instance, or when we drafted Mike Williams...(I dont need 10 posters saying "not me" as I know not 100% or people support every decision...quite frankly, some people are just liars too, but the overall consensus was in support of these moves). Then when they dont work our fans rip these moves apart and are critical as if they would have known better, even people who originally supported the move...come on, not realistic. If all the fans on these team boards were such football genuises they wouldnt be on these boards, they would be working in a front office some where.

So putting control in the fans hands would be the dumbest mistake ever made...just the truth. Throw in the fact that its hard enough to get 2 people to agree on something, but now you have hundreds or even thousands trying to agree on a coach...then add how completely far fetched and unrealistic this idea is to actually happen, and you sir earned the emoticon I gave...

Another example...all these fans on here whining that Ralph is cheap and doesnt pay players because thats the envogue thing to say. Truth is, anyone who has any real football sense and truly follows this team will clearly see Ralph has been spending his money, and big bucks I might add, on players to bring in and to retain players. But as a fan, they dont look at it from a football stance, they look at it as "I am butt hurt we are not in the playoffs so I am going to spout off anything just to rant".

    1. Our Oline was horrendous, he paid top dollar to bring in Dockery (who was a big signing) and Walker. Our O Line now is light years from where it was.

    2. He payed up and kept Evans with a hugh contract.

    3. He retained Schobel, Kelsay and Denney for big contracts

    4. Traded for Stroud (who doesnt have a small contract)

    5. Traded up in to first round (three times) to get players we wanted knowing it would cost us more money...

    6. Brought key players like Mitchell

    7. And so on and so on...

Fans spout off at the mouth based on emotion, they make decisions based on emotion....you cant do that when you are making decisions for a team. And all that is fine, thats what fans do, but it has no place in any place of power.

BOTTOM LINE: YOU CAN NOT LET THE INMATES RUN THE ASYLUM!

  19. Want to show me you are serious Ralph?

    Julius Peppers or Albert Haynesworth

Its not that simple...they have to choose us over the other teams also opening up the checkbook for them...

Peppers is almost a certain lock to resign in Carolina, and Haynesworth likely resigns in Tenn or goes to a more another team offering as much money as we would that is more attractive...

  20. We should try to do something that will go down in history. It will show how much Bills fans want a winning team and want the team to stay in Buffalo.

We start a web presence and pool of the PR resources we can through fans from the fan base. We get as many fans as possible to show support at the web site so we can see what kind of numbers (in terms of fans willing to contribute) we are dealing with to see if we could realistically raise the necessary funds. We set the site up as a pledge based system.

We have a poll set up for a larger handful of available coaches and perform voting to narrow it down to only a few coaches and then more down to two coaches.

We would need to have someone that somehow has access to talk to the agents of the coaches so that we know the availability of the candidates and price points. Of course, with this much publicity we can have an effect on the price point.

Let's say we come up with a contract that stipulates a one year contract with incentives and such. This way, we only pay for one year and if it is a success, One Bills Drive picks up the tab from there.

In other words, let's go over the front office's head. Let's show them that we don't want to have one pulled over on us by their marketing tactics. We will not only show them that we are loyal and savvy fan base, but also that the fans and the team are interconnected.

We go over the administrations head and hire the coach ourselves. Even if we do not make it that far, it will certainly drum up a ton of publicity and perhaps influence keeping the Bills in place and perhaps even influence FO changes.

    Thoughts?
