  1. The Bills can't go the way the Packers have gone with selling shares of the team obviously but if they are renovating the stadium it would be cool if they could steal another of the Packers' ideas (I have no idea if other teams do this or not) and sell bricks and tiles for fans to dedicate to friends and family and personalize the stadium. The Packers charge $75 and up. It's not going to pay for the new stadium by itself but with so many displaced Buffalonians around the country it could be a good source of revenue for the team if they do it right.

  2. Thank you for the common sense. If they are offering him 6 million a year, why send the mixed message that he is worth 9 million a year. The reality is that the franchise tag on receivers will be significantly more than that. Also, Johnson's camp needs to be wary of the situation Whitner found himself in by overestimating his market value at the time versus what the Bills offered him.

I don't think Johnson and Whitner are at all comparable. Whitner was an average player coming off a big contract probably looking for a raise. Johnson has outplayed his current deal and won't have any trouble getting a big raise somewhere.

  3. 19(?) players had 1000 yards this year: you might he overrating that benchmark.

Maybe but the Bills haven't had a receiver with back to back 1000 yard receiving years since...ever. Which doesn't mean that there haven't been better receivers here but I'm also not acting like that's easily replaced. And how many of those 19 1000 yard receivers are UFAs this year? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I count 5 (Wallace, Welker, Colston, V.Jackson, Johnson). http://www.kffl.com/static/nfl/features/freeagents/fa.php?option=WR&y=2012

And of those 5 Johnson is the youngest at 25.

    Wallace is a RFA.

  4. Who is gonna pay huge money to a guy who's known as much if not more for his antics than his on-field play? Bills know him best. Hard to think a team that doesn't know him as well is gonna take that chance. The guy made the league minimum his 1st 4 years. Doubt he's gonna turn down $9 million to hold out and hope someone gives up draft compensation and a lucrative long-term contract.

I think you underestimate his worth on the open market. He has put up solid numbers the last few years -- 82 and 76 yards receiving the last two years, back to back 1000 yards receiving, and 17 TDs? For this team? He proved he can do more than compete with the best DBs in the game. Somebody will pay him. Probably a lot or at least more than the Bills would be willing to spend. And everything he's said about dropping the celebrations, getting rid of his online t-shirt sales, etc. has been to sell the idea that he will be a more mature player wherever he ends up.

  5. Stevie has repeatedly and publicly stated he wants to remain in Buffalo. Chan and Nix have said that Stevie is a guy they want to have on their team. What makes you think he won't be back?

What other teams with notable free agents have resigned them to new contracts already?

I just think they waited too long. At this point he knows he is going to get paid no matter where he goes. He is about to get his first big contract of his career and he'll have the ability to pick where he wants to play. As a 7th round pick and former practice squad player I think that's huge. He has had a chance to think about being able to play for another team (maybe a team that has made the playoffs during his adult life). I get that there haven't been a ton of players being re-signed by their teams recently but I just feel like the time to re-sign Johnson passed a long time ago. I like Johnson but I don't think he's any more loyal than any other professional athlete and I think if he gets the opportunity to go he'll take it without looking back and would be justified in doing it.

  6. I'm assuming you meant Moats and Batten. In what way would it be a good thing for them? Seems to me that they're position-less in a 43, don't have the necessary skill sets for either DE or OLB. Defiantly not on an every down basis. Perhaps Moats could stick as a pass rush specialist.

    Wasn't Moats a 4-3 DE in College?

  7. Sanders & Catavolos are damn good coaches!! They s/b retained.

So many seem to be on Catavolos. The DB's aren't the problem. Covering receivers for 5 minutes is. There is no pass rush - take care of that and the DBs/Catavolos will look like all-pros / a genius.

My problem with the DBs was that so often they were right on a WR but when the ball came they never turned around to look for it and were either beaten or took a PI penalty. It wasn't just one or two guys either.

  8. What is the scenario where spending an additional $20 million in salary earns the team more than $20 million in additional profits?

Maybe attendence increases 13,000 a game. That's about an additional 100,000 tickets sold. $2 million in profit? $4 million at the most. So where does the other $16 million come from? Luxury boxes from all the Fortune 500 companies in Buffalo? Selling an extra million jerseys? I just don't think there is alot of room for revenue growth.

If the Bills paid to be a contender every year they could raise ticket prices, raise the prices for the suites and luxury boxes and people would buy them. They would also sell a lot more merchandise. They probably wouldn't even have to spend up to the salary cap. Not every team that makes the playoffs spends to the salary cap. They could also sell the naming rights to the stadium but they could do that now and don't. Maybe all of that wouldn't add up $20 million in profit but a lot of owners would be ok with less profit (not even losing money -- just less profit) in order to win a championship.
