  1. Inept FO? If the Bills had a new HC, new GM and new QB who took them immediately to 2 playoff seasons, this place would explode with delight.

And of course, when another team does better due diligence before making a pick that turns out well, it is simply due to "luck", whereas the Bills poor choices could never be predicted beforehand.

The opportunity to draft a player like Luck is an historical opportunity. A team has to be in the right place at the right time to draft a player like him. I don't think due diligence had anything to do with drafting Luck. It was a no-brainer.

Former Colts HC Jim Caldwell was 24-8 with Peyton Manning and 2-14 without him. The only difference was the QB. Suddenly the organization that was good became horrible because of the loss of one player.

There's a lot of legitimate reason to believe that the Colts success is mostly attributable to having the first pick overall in a draft which had a once-in-a-generation QB prospect. The Richardson trade, the Sheppard/Hughes trade… there's lots of reasons to believe that they have a very average football department.

  2. The Colts had the advantage of drafting one of the best QB prospects in recent memory. Luck's ability makes up for a lot of other drafting mistakes. The Bills don't have that type of guy at QB at the moment. The Colts haven't had to go through much of a learning curve with Luck, which makes the rest of the team building process a lot easier.

The Bills had that same luxury once they brought in Jim Kelly.

The point being is that, IMO, the QB position is by far the most important on any team. Get that one right, and building the rest of the team is a lot easier. It's not for lack of trying with the Bills. It's lack of ability on the part of the scouting department and management. Let's hope they got it right with EJ, because if they didn't, they'll be starting all over again.

    It's also luck and circumstances.

The Bills botched in passing Wilson and Kaepernick no doubt in my mind.

I suppose they could have traded up from #3 (Dareus) had Carolina been willing to trade down. Then we could have drafted Cam Newton.

But you have to be lucky (or intentionally bad) to even have an opportunity to draft Elway, Manning, Luck.

There is truly an element of luck in getting a franchise QB, which is partly why most NFL teams don't have one.

  3. That's a very interesting article.

    Thanks for posting.

In fairness to Talleywhacker, his offensive line was horrible and his receivers were average at best.

The amazing thing about Andrew Luck is that he has transcended the marginal talent around him.

Kapernick and Russell Wilson are very lucky to have landed on talent-stacked teams.

Luck had no such luck. It was amazing to see him initially hurt by the loss of Reggie Wayne and then work through that to develop a rapport with Brazill and Rogers.

Luck appears to be one of those very rare QBs who truly makes those around him better.

Back on topic, Watkins is one of several players I'd love at #9.

  4. Most likely. I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to find a way to get more Buffalo based fans to the game.

It wouldn't shock me if they end up giving season ticket holders a significant discount for these games in the future. They had to give tickets out to people on the streets at the last minute just to make the vendors happy.

    A refreshingly different take.

  5. Answer to what? Their starter this year under Kelly was Vick. Why did matter who was down the depth chart? That's like Bills fans starting the season being "impatient" with Thad or Tuel.

And as soon as Foles came in, there was nothing to be impatient about--he lit up the league.

MAkes no sense. I pointed that out to the other guy and his reply is now, essentially, "Ok never minf that, just don't talk about Foles and EJ anymore".

My point, poorly made was that fans don't have patience with young QBs.

When the Eagles came out 1-3 in their first 4 games, the Philly fans didn't believe that the answer to the team's QB problems was Nick Foles based on his rookie season.

That started to change once Foles started playing but then he laid an egg against Dallas and the doubters came out of the woodwork again.

  6. Also, why were the Philly fans "impatient" with Foles, when he was backing up Vick? Makes no sense--who gets "impatient" with a guy standing on the sidelines with a baseball cap on?

That sounds kind of ridiculous. Maybe they were "impatient" for Foles to take over for the awful Mike Vick. Because as soon as Foles came in, he was lighting it up for the rest of the year, so what on earth were they complaining about?

They were impatient because Foles played 7 games as a rookie, starting 6 of them and because the team also drafted Matt Barkley.

In spite of having a very good rookie year, very few Philly fans believed that Foles was the answer.

    Go figure.

  7. So you believe that because they're down to their 3rd string running back, that a 20-10 pass-run ratio when up 28 points is on the the D coordinators?

Edit: I do agree the D was awful. But that's why they were the 24th ranked D in the regular season.

Just pointing out the irony of blaming offensive playcalling in a game where they scored 44 points.

But I agree that the playcalling was a factor in the loss.

  8. So no one who got "dunked on" spilled their own beverage that they were holding? Highly doubt it.

And again, when physical contact is made, that is a BIG deal.

Yep. Once you violate a person's personal space and make physical contact, it crosses a line. The fact that it was an edited videotape which showed only what the videomaker wanted us to see doesn't mean that the immature practice didn't escalate into some bad feelings. They just didn't show us those instances.

It would never get that far. By the time you started drinking beers and started a hand-warming fire in a trash can I think they would ask you to leave.

BTW, you notice they didn't dunk on any grumpy looking old dudes.

And as Jeff pointed out upthread, the videomakers chose easy marks to dunk on.

  9. I don't care about his first 5 games. The Seattle coaching staff quickly made up their collective mind about Wilson. They were decisive and they were right.

The Seattle coaching staff stuck with Wilson and modified things to help him succeed, that's for sure. By midseason he was playing very well.

Like many I was very pro-Wilson before the draft. To those saying he was too short we pointed out that Wisconsin had the tallest O-line in college football (average 6'6") and that his yards per attempt and yards per completion were very high meaning he had zero problems seeing downfield.

Here's the thing no one has mentioned in this thread:

Wilson walked into a great situation. Seattle was a playoff caliber team with gobs of talent on the O-line, at running back, and on defense.

What Luck has done is much more impressive in that the talent level in Indy is much lower than it was/is in Seattle, IMO.

What you're missing is that they did do something, they addressed the QB issue last draft. Now, you may not like how they addressed it but to say they're sitting on their hands is nonsense.

Of course, if by "do something" you mean make a ridiculous trade for a very, very questionable QB then I hope they do nothing in that regards.

    This is true.

Jim would be more accurate to say that the Bills pooped and he doesn't like the poop.

Or to mix metaphors, the Bills have already delivered the baby and left the delivery room.

Many think it's an ugly baby, some don't.

    But the baby's been delivered.

  10. I was at the '93 Jets game and remember watching HBO's "This Week in the NFL" later that week and it opened the game's highlights with Marv and Jets coach Bruce Coslett talking at midfield before the game.

Marv: "It's brutal today, I don't think we'll have many people here."

Coslett: "I just looked out at your parking lot, it's packed!"

    Marv: "These people are amazing..."

I also remember on Christmas Eve the Bills put out a call to come clear the stadium for $5/hour I believe and many showed up...and more then a few were not dressed for the weather. Seeing this, Marv went into the locker room and grabbed hats, gloves and other gear to give to the folks clearing the snow. In my view, Marv made the Hall of Fame on that day.

I remember the occasional cattle calls for snow shovelers at the stadium. Anyone shoveling would get to attend the game as an extra bonus.

    Nice anecdotes.

  11. I think the issue is that most of us would not be happy with the majority of guys on that list. You're actually making a very strong case for drafting another QB early. Other than Luck, Stafford, and I'll go so far as to say Newton after this year, who among them are unquestioned franchise QBs? You could even question Stafford b/c despite gaudy stats he hasn't been able to get a team stacked with talent over the hump. Sam Bradford is a big ?, Tannyhill looks promising but I don't think anyone's ready to annoint him the next big star. RG3 looked great as a rookie but since hurting his knee (sound familiar) he's a shell of his former self and may or may not ever regain that form. Locker's starting to show some promise but has trouble staying healthy. The rest of the guys on that list are disappointments at best.

To recap, there are only 2-3 guys on that list that fans can look at right now and definitively say we've got our guy. That being the case, it seems prudent to pluck a new guy from the pack and get him in the system rather than waiting 2-3 years to find out whether you got Newton or Ponder.

While I'm a believer in EJ, there's no guarantee he'll become a premier QB, especially if he can't shake the injury bug.

Therefore as I've posted before I'm not against drafting another QB.

Rookie QBs typically play poorly and it's hard to tell what you have for 2-3 seasons.

I think it would be unconventional but justifiable to double-down on the position.

  12. People are up in arms over letting Rogers go. What did he have like 1 catch yesterday. I mean no one said the kid wasn't talented. However, it takes much more than that to make it in this league. I have no problems with the Bills cutting him. He is young and immature a kid who needs to do some growing up. Hopefully, he makes it because he can really become a good player.

If he follows in the footsteps of Da'Rick Rogers, Colt Lyeral will be playing for the Colts at this time next year.

He'll make one circus catch in the wild card round and there will be a 38 page thread on him.

    :)

Oh, and the Bills will have fired their tight ends coach at the end of next season.

  13. what did washington really give up ?

this years #2 overall draft choice will cost $5.5/yr for 4 years....all guaranteed.

the redskins can go out and sign a Free Agent for $5.5/yr for 4 years or any other amount they choose. they didn't loose the cap space. just the right to take a gamble on an expensive rookie.

    manny lawson $3.1 mil/yr

    jerry hughes $1.1 mil/yr

    FWIW, four premium picks:

"Redskins acquired the pick by giving the Rams four high-value draft picks over three years: their No. 6 overall pick in 2012, their second-round pick in 2012, and their first-round picks in 2013 and 2014."

  14. "There are plenty of franchises who have never had 1 QB as good as either of those guys."

    Montana and Young

    Staubach and Aikman

    Favre and Starr

    Brady and Bledsoe

    Bradshaw and Roethlisberger

    Marino and Griese

    LOL Elway and Manning

    Not bad.

How about the other 25 teams?
