We've been in the dark ages for some time by sticking with a film camera. Please hold your comments, as this regards my wife. I however, am open to whatever smartassinated comments that may come. And/but/now seriously, now that we're in the market to upgrade, anybody have any suggestions on what we should be looking out for. Planning to spent between $150-$250. If you're just finally switching to a digital camera now, any of the current cameras will be a significant upgrade to your current film camera. Best Buy has some nice cheap digital cameras on sale, some for under $100. I'd browse a few stores online, even maybe Amazon or eBay, they always have good deals. I bought a Kodak EasyShare 8.2 Megapixel camera a few years ago and I've had no problems with it so far. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They'll have user reviews and tons of information on the cameras and will help you to find just what you are looking for. And I did do a search on this board for other threads on digital cameras, but nothing came up. I'll, though, peruse the link provided by fezmid (thanks for that). A couple of things: -- Having just turned 46, am not much of a web shopper. I'm old-fashioned and like to have the thing I'm buying in hand. That said, I might head over to a local store, check out what I like and then go to the site's you suggested and do some price comparisons. So thanks for that. -- Looking for a versatile camera, that's good indoors and outdoors, used for a variety of things like Christmas with the family to vacationing on the beach. -- Also, not a big bells-and-whistles type guy. Something simple, though solid, is what I prefer. Need something that takes good pictures, is easy to handle, and the only real bell/whistle is one that has good zooming capabilities. I've seen some that can get in pretty tight from a couple of dozen yards away. -- As for size, something relatively sleek, that won't be too bulky while trudging around some foreign town on vacation. -- Finally, since this is our first digital, is there anything I should be looking out for in regards to hooking the thing up to our home computer. A remarkably handsome piece - stainless steel housing, flawless brushed paint finish, details. Small, but gives one the feeling of substance - not a thing "plastic-ey" about it. Most of my career has been in manufacturing. I can't comment about how long this thing will last, or if it will prove a reliable product, but IMO the designers and the manufacturing folks snuck one by the bean counters. http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default...+finepix+z100fd So far: .Full paper manual. An asset. Armed with a book in front of you, it's easy to flip pages, and figure things out. .The software is easy to use. D/L's are a snap. .It has a bunch of features comparable to a modern film SLR (it isn't an SLR)...ASA adjustment, exposure controls, f-stop and the like. I've just uses the "auto" and "macro" settings so far. .No viewfinder - a glass LCD screen. That's a new experience for me - and it does wash out in daylight, like it seems all such do. I bought a 4Gb SDHS card for something like 8 bucks...so I just shoot and shoot trusting that one will work. It tells me I'm good for 1500+ shots. Battery life - dunno. I charged it initially, and charged it again after 50 shots or so and a 5 minute movie trial, but I'd include 2 or so hours with it on, fooling around with it and figuring out this or that. Most of my exposure/developing skills have faded over the years, though. I still have a Canon A-1 with a brace of lenses and filters. I was very adept an using that, back when. B&W, exposure factors, field depth, developing, etc. Old skills now rusted... I can't recommend this Fuji product, or not recommend it, for functionality. Short time of usage. Still... if things get heated...a 5 1/2 oz, metal-framed thing. Close the hand on that, take a swing at an adversary - you will bust his jaw. I kid of course........ don't know if this board is ready for the opinions of a canadian-born sports writer who's read one too many -- or perhaps three two few -- hunter s. thompson screeds in his life and has a certain fascination for watching certain night-time politico hosts on two certain cable networks, as well as the very funny jon stewart. though your offer's tempting, i shall however respectfully decline invitation to jump into those waters because of numerous professional concerns in regards to the perception of bias and objectivity. i hope you understand. --- now, back to the topic at hand, have been told that i should avoid sony because of its propriety nature of products, meaning i'd be more or less forced to buy sony accessories to go with the sony camera. and from my preliminary scan, i'm leaning toward cannon or nikon. they seem to be the most reliable. likely to make selection memorial day weekend. otherwise, happy victoria day weekend to those back home. jw Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
