With he Golden Globes being handed out this weekend, all of the potential Oscar nominated films being released right up to the end of December, most of them in limited engagements, over the next couple of weeks these films will slowly open nationwide. As that happens the studios know that this is the time to quietly release the terrible films they have on hand, hoping to make some money, since January is traditionally a low box office making time of the year for new releases. Leading the charge in search of box office gold is the comedy "Bride Wars". Kate Hudson & Anne Hathaway star as two best friends who become rivals when a clerical error results in their respective weddings being held at the same place ... on the same day. Bad reviews will not matter as the premise, two big female leads, and catchy title, will bring in millions of gal pals for the film. With Christmas over, people who are tired of cheery ideas can look forward to some horror. A total of four horror movies comes out in this month alone. The vampire vs. werewolf saga continues with "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans". This prequel is an origins story centered on the centuries-old feud between the race of aristocratic vampires and their onetime slaves, the Lycans. Rhona Mitra, Michael Sheen & Bill Nighy star. Continuing the re-makes of slasher films, comes "My Bloody Valentine:3-D". Tom returns to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine's night massacre that claimed the lives of 22 people. And when another horrific event occurs soon after Tom's appearance, he finds himself suspected of the deadly acts. Jensen Ackles, Jaime King & Kerr Smith star. If you are wondering why a Valentine's Day movie is being released now, it's beacuse Friday the 13th has laid claim to that weekend. In "The Uninvited", After her mother's death and her subsequent hospital stay, Anna Rydell returns home to be with her sister and her father, who has become engaged to Rachel, her mother's former nurse. During her first night back, Anna is visited by her mother's ghost, who reveals that the new woman in her father's life is not who she pretends to be, leading to a fateful confrontation between the women of the house. Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, Elizabeth Banks & David Straithairn star. Finally in "The Unborn", Haunted by strange dreams and recurring ghostly visions, Casey Beldon turns to a spiritual advisor for help. Odette Yustman, Gary Oldman & Cam Gigandet star. Brendan Fraser stars in the long delayed "Inkheart", where a young girl discovers her father has an amazing talent to bring characters out of their books and must try to stop a freed villain from destroying them all, with the help of her father, her aunt, and a storybook's hero. Renee Zellweger stars in "New in Town", As a Miami-based consultant who is shipped out to small-town Minnesota for her newest project: supervising the restructuring of a local manufacturing plant. In "Killshot", A botched scam sends an old-school hitman and a young stick-up kid on a mission to find and kill an innocent couple in order to protect their identities. Mickey Rourke, Thomas Jane, Diane Lane & Joseph Gordon-Levitt star. In "Taken", A former spy relies on his old skills to save his daughter, who was kidnapped by slave traders during her vacation in Paris. Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace & Famke Janssen star. "Notorious", Is a chronicle of Christopher Wallace's rise from the streets of Brooklyn to become Notorious B.I.G., one of biggest and best rappers of the 1990s, under the tutelage of mentor/producer Sean Combs. Jamal Woolard, Anthony Mackie & Derek Luke star. In "Hotel For Dogs", Orphaned teens Andi and Bruce are sent to live with their aunt, which is just fine with the kids until they meet a stray dog who needs their help. Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin & Lisa Kudrow star. Kevin James is "Paul Blart: Mall Cop", When a shopping mall is overtaken by a gang of organized crooks, it's up to the a mild-mannered security guard to save the day. In "Not Easily Broken", A car accident and shifting affections test the bond between a married couple. Morris Chestnut stars. That's becasue I put Gran Torino in my December Movies post on Independent movies. And yes, I saw it today and it was a very good movie. The Poojer Posted January 11, 2009 Share Posted January 11, 2009 not sure if you brought this indy to the attention when it was released, but i am getting ready to watch "Man on Wire" a documentary about phillipe pettit(?) the guy that walked the tight rope between the twin towers of the world trade center in the early 70's. came highly recommended. The 2008 Golden Palm winner from Cannes, "The Class", gets it's USA release. Teacher and novelist François Bégaudeau plays a version of himself as he negotiates a year with his racially mixed students from a tough Parisian neighborhood. What do you get when you have Vikings, Aliens and a Dragon? You get "Outlander". During the reign of the Vikings, Kainan (Caviezel), a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry. James Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Ron Perlman, John Hurt & Jack Huston star. In the thriller "Donkey Punch", A botched sex act turns a hedonistic Mediterranean cruise into a deadly fight for survival when two girl friends face off against the group of boys who invited them aboard their luxury yacht. Warner Bros. goes Bollywood with "Chandni Chowk to China", about an Indian cook traveling across China is mistaken by villagers as the reincarnation of an ancient peasant warrior, and as he heads to their homeland for a princely reception, he learns he has been chosen to help the village fight a notorious smuggler. I like Jensen Ackles from Supernatural, and I never saw the original movie from the 80's. Maybe I'll check it out. yeah it is what it is. Acting was pretty good. Had Ted Aitkens(Halloween series) in it as the cop. Kinda brought back memories of the 80s. I wouldn't say it was really scary, just over the top gore taking advantage of the 3d format.
