It's Miami Week

Another great email from one of our members reliving the best 10 Bills/Phins Victories, makes my blood BOIL towards the Dolphins. Can't wait to break out my "F### MIAMI" Tshirt this weekend:

My favs:

3. Bills 27, Dolphins 24- September 10th, 1989- Joe Robbie Stadium

The season opener that year, and Bills fans remember Jim Kelly diving

across the goal line on a quarterback sneak to win the game. An amazing

game, and one Kelly's all-time greatest moments as a Bill. I just wish he

would have remembered it as well as I did. You see, a few years ago, Jim

came out to Cradle Beach to talk to the kids as he did every summer.

Somehow, this game came up in conversation as we spoke. He told me it was

1991. I told him it was 1989. He laughed and said he was there, he

should know. I laughed too and told him again that it was 1989. He

disagreed, and then I rattled off the date, and how we won, and how I ran

into 8th grade the next day screaming about him and how he was my hero.

Then he looked scared. Then he left.

8. Bills 23, Dolphins 20- December 17th, 1995- Rich Stadium

The next two entries on this list occurred less than two weeks apart. The

Bills squished the Fish in a tight game, propelling the Bills to another

division title. Remember Steve Tasker in this game? The guy looked liked

Thurman’s step-brother, didn’t he? I mean, uh, in terms of talent?

Tasker ran up the middle all day on Miami, and Dolphins Defensive

Coordinator Tom Olivadotti and his hairy arms refused to adjust to what

the Bills offense was doing. The best part of this game though took place

towards the end, where all-time favorite Bill Carwell Gardner was ejected

for fighting with the ever-classy Bryan Cox. As Cox walked off the field,

he spat at Bills fans several times, and Bills fans responded in kind by

tossing beer and garbage back at Cox. After both men were escorted off

the field, Carwell attempted to get to the Miami locker room, looking to

dust up Cox some more. He never found him, and Bryan Cox, I hope you

thank God every day that Carwell never found you. His name was Carwell

Gardner. Even if I had never seen the man, he just sounds like someone

who could kill someone with his hands, am I right? Your name was Cox. I

won’t even make the joke.

My favorite Dolphins games....

December 23, 1990 - The Bills beat Miami 24-14 with Frank Reich running the ship, clinching their first AFC East title and home field throughout the playoffs.

January 12, 1991 - AFC Divisional Playoff.....they beat the trash-talking Fins 44-34, prompting Thurman Thomas to say during the postgame that they played pretty well and still got their a$$es kicked.

Here's mine, 'cause I was there!

1. Bills 34, Dolphins 31 OT- October 25th, 1987- Joe Robbie Stadium

1987 would mark the first time since 1966 that the Bills would

sweep the Dolphins, and the first game of that season series was a

memorable one. The Bills were down 21-0, but battled back and won the

game in OT on a Scott Norwood field goal.

IIRC Robb Riddick (one of my all-time favorite Bills) scored 3 or 4 touchdowns in this one

Too lazy to come up with specific dates, but here's my 2 favs:

'87 @ Miami. After a heart pounding, last minute, come from behind win vs. the Oilers at home, the players went on strike. After 3 weeks of scabball, the players returned and we were at the Fish. Down 21 -0 late in the second quarter, we got a Norwood feild goal just before half. Then in the second half, Kelly went into a zone playing his finest game yet as an NFLer. Rob Riddick and Chris Burkett were fantastic, but it was Kelly who cemented everyone's belief that he was 'the chosen one'. Marino threw a late TD to tie at the end of regulation, but we won the toss and Kelly rifled a couple great passes to Burkett to set up Norwood for our best/biggest victory since befoe the previous strike 4 years earlier.

'83 @ Miami. Joe Ferguson's last stand and Dan Marino's first NFL start. Marino showed the world what they were in for, for the next dozen years, throwing 3 TD passes, but Fergy play unconscious, throwing for a team record 5 Td's in a game that would also end with an overtime Field Goal for the Scarlett, Royal and White!

<edit> I see I was beaten to the punch

Nice list...but no Bills-Fish list is complete without the 1980 opener.

From his email...hahaha:

"Obviously I have left some other worthy games off of the list, but this is

what the committee and I came up with, and if you don’t like it, well,

feel free to start your own list. It’s Miami Week. Don’t push me.

And as if you needed further rage, Jimmy Johnson once stomped on a box of

Flutie Flakes after the Fish beat us in a playoff game. The same box of

cereal that was being sold to raise money for autism awareness and a

possible cure. Johnson thought this was something great. Class and

character disagreed with him."

I've had this clipping from the paper hanging on my fridge door since sometime in the mid 1990's. It's a letter to the sports editor written by one Brian ******** from Cheektowaga. It's titled "Dumping on the Dolphins". I hope the ladies and gents here like it as much as I do:

" As a longtime Bills follower, I

spent the past few months listen-

ing to national media people an-

nouncing the demise of the Bills.

It is true we are rebuilding, but it

is a wonder to be 8-4, despite in-

juries and inexperience.

I watched with great pleasure

the dismantling of Miami at home

by the 49ers. I now will enjoy writ-

ing the obituary for an organiza-

tion long overdue to receive it.

In 1985, Miami lost the AFC

Championship game.

In 1986, Miami finished 8-8 and

out of the playoffs.

In 1988, Miami finished 6-10 and

out of the playoffs.

In 1989 Miami gave up 69

points in two consecutive losses to

finish 8-8 and out of the playoffs.

In 1990 Miami wound up 12-4 but

lost to Buffalo in the playoffs

44-34, giving up 434 yards.

In 1991, Miami at 8-6 alowed

61 points in its final two losses to

finish out of the playoffs.

In 1992, Miami lost the AFC

Championship Game to Buffalo,

surrendering 358 yards and com-

mitting five turnovers.

In 1993, Miami entered Decem-

ber 9-2, and gave up 33 points per

game in five straight losses to miss

the playoffs.

In 1994, ahead 21-15 in an

AFC semifinal, Miami allowed San

diego to move 60 yards for the

winning touchdown.

I can't wait to see what hap-

pens this year. Despite spending

millions of dollars, this remains a

group of underachievers who fin-

ger point when faced with adversi-

ty and lack the fiber of a champi-

onship team. It amazes me to

watch probably the best coach of

all time tolerate selfishness and

lack of discipline and character."
