The US has just deployed an AC-130 gunship to the region.

A monster firepower machine.

It has plenty of loiter time, plenty of guns, plenty of sensors, and usually operates at night.

Not a survivable situation for a boat driver.

Interesting from the logistics side.

From the legal side: I took the Law of the Sea class many moons ago, so I'm not exactly up to speed on this.

My understanding: we're talking about non-flag vessels in international waters. The law is murky here about what we can do. I'm not saying we can't legally do this, but I would like to see the legal theory tightened up here. There may be grounds for seizing the vessel; I'm not sure what grounds would lead to destroying the vessel, particularly if no warning is given.

Here's a good summary from a maritime lawyer.

I understand they're basing this on a quasi-terrorism ground, but international law is actually a thing too.

What would you call it

I certainly wouldn't call it a war.

If the US waged "war" against Venezuela, it would be far more dramatic.
