Mike Williams' cap number

from this mornings buffalo news:

"The Bills will save $2 million against this year's salary cap sometime in July by spreading out $3 million in roster bonuses Mike Williams is scheduled to get this summer. That will put his cap figure at $7.46 million and provide a cap cushion. It doesn't look like a more extensive reworking of his contract will happen this year."

good to finally see some news on this.........draft picks will eat up a large chunk of that extra cash, but with guys like verba and law still available it's nice to know the bills have room to operate if they want to address an area of need.......

even if no one else gets added or extended the cap room can always be carried over to future years.........

 I've always been under the impression that there's a built-in allotment for signing draft picks (and even then, only a 1st or 2nd rounder would be high enough to count toward the cap), and that unused cap space cannot be transferred to use down the line. You use it that year or lose it.

It'd be nice if this is creating some room to sign Clements (tho it's virtually guaranteed that he's going to test the waters) or lock up McGee.

Is this the final year of his contract?

No. According to Billsdaily's front office info, MW signed a 6-year/$38M contract in 2002.

Signed through the 2007 season.

According to the NFL Players Association web-site his base salaries are

2005 $4 M

2006 $5 M

2007 $5 M

The cap hits including bonuses are all in $9-10 M range--the announced restructuring gets this years figure down to $7 M but puts 2006 and 2007 in the $10 M range.

He could be the best right tackle in history and probably not justify the cap hit. The expectation when drafted was that he would be a premier LT which would put him about average elite salary and bonus wise. With the free agents we have coming up the next two years-we need to figure out what do with this during off-season 06. A lot will be decided based on his performance in year 2 under McNally.

This is what happens when #4 overall draft choices don't progress as planned. This is why, in addition to the implied bad record, that I hate being at the top of the draft...a lot more guys don't meet the expectations of the huge salary than do. They don't suck all the time--but they have to be a superstar to justify the cap hit. Give me an Eric Moulds or Nate Clements anytime--drafted in the 20's and become top shelf with fairly reasonable rookie contracts earning their big pay day later rather than the top 5 which get their big paychecks right away.

Bills | Williams Tweaks His Contract

Sun, 26 Jun 2005 09:15:05 -0700

Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports the Buffalo Bills did some tweaking to OT Mike D. Williams' contract. The team will save $2 million against this year's salary cap sometime in July by spreading out $3 million in roster bonuses he was scheduled to get this summer. That will put his cap figure at $7.46 million and provide a cap cushion. It doesn't look like a more extensive reworking of his contract will happen this year.

IMO this is decent, but not great news. This seems like the LEAST amount of restructuring that they could've done (well, besides none). I wonder if they were wary of giving Used-to-be-Fat Mike an extension, waiting instead to see how he plays this year. He came on toward the second half last year - perhaps they want him to show he can keep it up. It's a risk, in my view.
