Henry worst case scenario

If we don't get Henry traded before the start of the regular season, does anyone believe he will actually sit? His choices are incredibily limited. If he doesn't he still has a year left on his contract. If he sits our best hope is a 6th round draft choice next year.

I hope he doesn't sit. This is getting ugly.

He can't sit. He has to show up for at least the last 6 games of the season or else he still owes us a year.

If TH sits a year, he is a damn fool! He doesn't hurt the team one bit, but he flushes his own career down the toilet.

He will play, and he will play well when called upon. And he will be out the door with an FA contract when the season is done. And the Bills get a compensatory pick that will probably be better than what was offered for TH in trade. And that's fine.

THE BILLS WILL NOT BE GIVEN A COMPENSATORY PICK FOR LOSING HENRY .

Like other teams in the league their losses and gains for '06 due to free agency. Yje formula is a black box for the public which will be determined by a committee of NFL and NFLPA representatives as part of an agreement to cushion the transition caused by the creation of the collective bargaining agreement which did not exist when the contracts were originally signed.

A decision was made to award teams compensation for this transition, but the system was set up so that though originally they gave teams 1st rounders for the best players lost the compensation has been ratcheted down so that a 3rd rounders are occaisionally the value given out.

If a team benefits from signing FAs without having to give up compensation for those players (as we did receiving Spikes, Fletcher, Posey, Adams with no loss of players for us) this can cancel out the loss of players without compensation that year (Winfield and Jennings for example left us with no compensation received).

At most Henry will be factored into a total picture of FAs lost and gained in 06 and we may get nothing or we may get awarded some draft pick based for the most part on the contract he signs with his new team to determine his value.

This compensation will come from the NFL in terms of awarding additional second day picks and will not be from the team who gets him in direct payment for the level of value assigned to him by his new bosses.

The worst case Henry scenario is probably something like this...

Willis pops a ganube in training camp and has to sit on the sideline all year with a poultice on his pecker.

MM turns to TH who turns in a HOF season - rushes for 2,800 yards including a 451yd. monster against NewenGland and a 7 thouchdown effort in the season finale. The Bills go 14-2 to pull DonnaHo's career pct. up to .500 here at Buff and they get a first round bye in the playoffs.

Fast forward to the week after the Superbowl (I'm not telling you who wins) and Henry and his agent are in TD's office talking contract. Willis and his agent Rosencrans hold a press conference to publicly demand a trade.

Henry gets a new deal and then has to renegotiate with TD before the start of training camp 'cause he's run out of cash from buying iPods for his 14 year-old girlfriends.

And if he only shows up for the last 6 he better stay on the straight and narrow and not get suspended for a game or more, else he is ours for yet another year.

couple things:

i don't recall them ever handing out 1st round picks as compensation -- do you recall any examples?

jennings did not leave us with no compensation received -- the compensation for 2005 off-season losses will not be doled out until the 2006 off-season.....as it sits now, we have lost williams and jennings and gained holcomb and anderson (gandy will weigh into this as well if he receives significant playing time, as would any other free agent acquistion the bills sign between now and the end of the season)........but jennings, as a stand along, should net us a 3rd........williams the same.......if holcomb doesn't play and anderson starts 16 games we are looking at a 3rd and a 2nd day pick when viewed overall......this is the very, very small plus to the lack of free activety this off-season......

if we do receive a compensatory pick for henry it will not be until 2007 -- that's a long time to wait for value, especially considering it will likely be a 2nd day choice.....
