This is the Season we Should Have Expected

Recommended Posts

Preseason projection from Nate Silver's 538 site:

"ELO" rating: 15th among the 32 teams

Other than Houston, all AFC playoff teams rated higher than the Bills

Post-Week 15:

ELO rating: 15th among the 32 teams

All AFC playoff teams rate higher than the Bills

Every season has its flukes. We all know the defense was far worse than expected, the offense considerably better. Rex Ryan has delivered completely predictable results in a very unexpected manner. The idea was that somehow he could have brought Rex Magic to Buffalo (I'm not sure what the origins of the notion that he has some kind of magic are) to make the team overperform expectations. Like all sorts of magical thinking, this was proven to be false.

Rex Ryan didn't help things. He didn't hurt a whole lot either. This is an average team, like all average teams with certain areas of strength and certain glaring weaknesses. Another change in coaching staff won't bring magically better results either.

Or to paraphrase another coach: We are who we thought we were ...

Very true. The expectations to win immediately by fans were too high for this team in its first year.

They should gel in the 2nd year with more experience learning the new system.

Sick of hearing about learning new systems. Football is not complicated.
