Observations: Texans 23 - Bills 17

By Joe Buscaglia

They came, they saw and they almost conquered.

In a cruel twist of fate at the beginning of the second half, the Buffalo Bills saw their 3-1 start evaporate as quickly as it took the 289-pound J.J. Watt to run the ball 80 yards for a touchdown. With so many opportunities to put the Houston Texans away, the Bills have no one to blame but themselves for poor execution on Sunday.

The Bills lost to Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Texans 23-17, and at the same time, painted an even bigger bullseye on their young quarterback — the same one that drew a multitude of criticism after his performance in Week Three. Where did it go wrong?

Some observations from the game:

The Bottom Line On EJ Manuel: God gave EJ Manuel outstanding football and athletic skills. But God didn't give EJ Manuel competitive desire or ambition. EJ Manuel would rather be alone in a quiet library reading a book than playing football.

Time to move on to Orton which will improve things...for about two weeks.

This is an overstatement and not even close to being the truth.

When the Buffalo Bills fail to gain a first down, EJ Manuel leaves the field with a look of relief on his face. I've noticed this a lot. The guy just has no competitive instinct.

"Leopards do not change their spots."

This post is nothing more than pure silliness.

Chandler says EJ made some great throws. Hmmm. He made some routine throws that any competent QB is expected to make. Nothing brilliant, nothing really difficult. He missed a LOT of other routine throws that any competent QB is expected to make. Just as bad, he didn't even see wide open receivers that even one of his overthrown softie passes could have gotten to.

@ChrisBrownBills

Jackson says now isn’t time for sweeping change http://wp.me/plmrg-aAj

No it's not. It's better to wait until the team is 2-5, and Manuel continues to suck, before "sweeping changes" are made. Come on Fred!!! You've been here long enough to have witnessed this boatload of crap before (practically every season)- you should be leading the charge for some semblance of change. If the change is nothing more than benching a QB who lacks b@lls for the veteran backup- what's wrong with that?

Even if his true feelings are the opposite, there's no way he says anything to the contrary in public.

@ChrisTrapasso

On re-watch, Cyril Richardson played as expected. Power run-blocker. Adequate anchor. Whiffed on few speed rushes. Played Watt decently well

In his 1st NFL start, #Bills LG Cyril Richardson was an upgrade over previous/injured starter Chris Williams. Stronger. More balanced/aware.

Re-watched EJManuel's game-ending INT. Pears got completely ruined by Watt. Woods was held all the way downfield. Fortunate ruling for HOU.

Throw may have sailed b/c EJ was hit by Watt at the release. But illegal hands downfield def could have been called. Refs will miss some.

Despite the "OMG SEASON'S OVER" takes, following a 6-pt road loss, #Bills are 2-2 with chance to be 1st in the AFC East after MNF tonight.

Texans 23, Bills 17: http://www.cbssports...-loss-to-giants

BUF.png D

EJ Manuel threw an 80-yard touchdown pass with nine minutes left in the game. If Manuel hadn't thrown that touchdown pass, here are what his stats would've been: 20 of 43 for 145 yards, 1 TD, 2 inteceptions. Those are ugly numbers. The Bills offense played an ugly game. The season could get ugly if Manuel doesn't get things figured out soon.

HOU.png B

Arian Foster only ran for 6 yards and Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two interceptions, but the Texans were still able to win BECAUSE OF JJ WATT. Watt had an 80-yard pick-six, becoming only the second player since 1970 to have a pick-six and offensive TD catch in the same season. Kicker Randy Bullock was also big for the Texans, hitting field goals from 41, 55 and 50 yards.

let me guess written by Pete Prisco?

Knowing PP picked the Bills to win ...... now he's just acting out.

The BUF.png D had a chance to win the game.. really what does it say for Houston? Not a lot.

Curious grading to be sure. The Texans are a very mediocre 3-1 football team.
