ExiledInIllinois
"Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on." -Joni Mitchell Hey Guys... Long time no loggy on. Hope that the season finds all in good health and warmth, "warmth of the heart" especially!... Here's an interesting phenomenon (or @ least I think so)... Now that Lake elevations are up to the highest they been to in 20 years... This is what 220 Tons of steel, in the form of a sector gate (giant door) does when the pressure of the head (difference between the two elevations of water at a navigation lock) is mixed with relatively warm water (32-33 degree F) temps and sub-zero air temps hovering in the -10 to -20 degree F range:
Marv's Neighbor
Just got back from a 7 day Danube River cruise. 12 locks, all up hill. Went on the Rhine last year, more locks, busier commercial traffic. Went in one where we were next to another ship. I swear there wasn't an arms length between the ship on one side and the wall of the lock on the other.
