Two games do not decide how good your (or anyone else's) offense or defense is, as we've seen so many times in the past. Pretty much. To my eye, the Bills are much improved in this area compared to the last two years. Also New England is an excellent running team (7th last year) and Carolina was 9th in rushing last year and 3rd in rushing the year before. Though, we change where guys line up quite a bit, so I'm not really sure what to make of it. I can deal with 3.96, 4.2 and 3.0, but the 7.16 and 6.25 are inexcusable. Having broke down carries for each team and the NFL as a whole many times for a football game I was working on, its pretty normal...vast majority of attempts are runs between the guards for every team Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

For example the #1 ranked defense Seattle has played 101 defensive plays and the Bills have played 165 and the yards per play are actually close at 4.5 to 4.6. Fair but this is why the offense must improve third down efficiency. Also if the Bills can manage to get a decent lead in games it takes the run somewhat out of the oppositions toolbox. Orton's Arm Posted September 19, 2013 Share Posted September 19, 2013 At the end of the day we would all agree that what matters is W-L's. Still, it is nice to see that the Bills team statistics are climbing as compared to previous years. A concern behind the numbers is that the defense ranks 30th against the run. It is puzzling to me with the talent on the Bills line why for so long they have been poor against the run. Pettine will solve this I'm sure. The D is also not helped by the fact that the offense has had too many short drives and lower than desired time of possession. We have a shot at the top 10 in all areas this year. The NFL generally bases these stats on yards gained, or yards allowed, over the course of a game. Due to the Bills' no-huddle offense, there will be more plays per game than would have been the case had they huddled. Artificially boosting the number of plays per game makes the offense look better than it should, and the defense look worse than it should. At this point, I believe that the defense is the stronger of the two units; and that this strength would be apparent in the rankings if it wasn't for the no huddle.
