NFL Games will be longer this season

The problem is you might take away a big play. WR running open? Throw the flag on the play before.

Big plays don't happen that often - and it would likely happen *because* the offense is rushing to get the next play in and the defense isn't ready or deployed for it. Most of the time, the offense does a quick run or a QB sneak just to get the play in, anyway. If you take this rule away, you won't see this type of big play. I'd be willing to take the chance of losing a big play.

Besides, this is all to get the calls right. It would just be the Bills' luck to have the Patriots get away with a play and score on the next one - the officials can easily review the previous play and set the clock to where it should have been.

The whole thing works if they have a replay official in the booth that does the review. If the Ref on the field has to wait for the specific footage to be cued up, run over to a designated replay camera and then come out to announce something.... it'll be horribly slow and inefficient. As with most things, the idea itself isn't necessarily bad, but the execution could make it bad.

They already do. There's one at every game. If I'm correct, the replay official literally looks at every play. It's only within the last 2 minutes of each half that he notifies the on-field referee that a play needs to be reviewed. Otherwise, it's up to the coaches to challenge.

One would hope that they would do the same thing for every score - review it quickly and only notify the referee if there's something amiss.

This is a non-issue. All obvious scores will be reviewed quickly with likely no added time. Close calls will add the same time they do now if a coach's challenge is used--except coaches won't have to waste a challenge on a blown call.

The article already says there will be a booth ref who will notify the ref on the field whether to kick the PAT or come in for a review.
