Is this 1986 again?

I do want to preface my comments with the statement that I truly appreciated the Bill Polian era, and we probably would still be a competitive team to this day, but when you look at Polian's body of work, it's hard not to question what does he seem to lack in order to win a SuperBowl, or even further, field a team that can win in the post season deep, or be the dominant team in the post season?

I ask this strictly because if it weren't for Rex Grossman, Polian's SuperBowl teams would be 0-6. The Colts have been outplayed by Pittsburgh and New England at times in the playoffs and regular season that really make you think that there has to be something to this theory I have that Bill Polian is great at getting you there, but not dancing with you.

I know the man-love in Bill country will disagree with my theory in a landslide manner, but when you have QB's like Jim Kelly, Peyton Manning, and even Frank Reich, and all the Hall of famers he dug up on offense for these teams, maybe, just maybe we as a team would have only been in for more heartache.

It's time to look at his leaving in a different light and put it behind us as a franchise. Maybe we're actually better off. I honestly think this team will be.

An interesting angle actually. The Super Bowl teams were known as offensive powerhouses, but on defense they were average with Walt Corey's bend-but-don't-break philosophy. Once Polian left, we ended the 90s with the #1 ranked defense, but an offense led by Rob Johnson and Antowain Smith. Those teams didn't even reach the Super Bowl. Indy's always had a weak defense to go with their killer offense.

Yes, exactly... it's uncanny how these teams both have mid to bottom end defenses, and a top notch pass rusher. I loved what he did here, but I have to hope there's someone capable of more.

I feel really good about this team. For the first time in a LONG time i actually feel that the offense will, you know, actually convert on a 3rd down from time to time...

Fitz is the Man, he's tough, smart and is getting better and better all the time...He's the reason the o-line is playing great by the way and what would be a better story than an underdog like fitz playing for an underdog city/team like buffalo and winning the super bowl, kinda like drew breez did it last year..

I BILLIEVE BABY!!!! GO BILLS!!!

In those formative years we were also losing games at the end, losing games by a touchdown or less. We turned the corner when we started to win the 1-3 point games, Marv and the Bills (and the fans) made Orchard park a miserable place to play for an opposing team.

I am far from a Mr. Sunshine, but I do see some similarities with the mid to late 80's teams (with the exception of a big name QB signing and being escorted through the city like an arriving head of state).

Now if only we had a Smith and Talley to go along with it..

We've been over this before - its 1984 again, not 1986!

this season in no way comes close to the 1984 season. That team was brutal in every sense of the word, and in most cases completely un-watchable with absolutely nothing to root for. They were so devoid of talent that year, you could actually hear them suck out loud.

And this year is so different? OK, maybe its 1985.

The Bills went 4-12. Jim Kelly's rookie year. Levy joins the Bills as coach halfway through the season. 1987 they went 7-9. 1988 they go to the AFC championship.

Chan has been here from the start of the season and Fitz isn't a rookie but the Bills might be on a similar track. Let's hope.

I guess you haven't actually watched the games...sober, anyway.

I have watched the games, as much as I can stomach, anyway. I have also watched the standings. Neither leads me to believe the Bills are headed towards 4 straight super bowls. Churn out a couple 2-14 seasons and do a good job of drafting and we look just like 1984, though. Whether it's Polian's version of 1984 or Orwell's remains to be seen.

Okey dokey. Your opinion is duly noted.

So just so I understand...you are saying this Bills team has shown nothing to you that it's heading in a better direction? Nothing? Not one thing? That 2 wins is 2 wins is 2 wins?

Kelly threw an INT to Shane Matthews Sr. on the following play. I wonder how many people felt Kelly wasn't "franchise QB" material after that?

That I cannot answer, but if TSW had been around back then, I'm sure there'd have been a faction of whiners complaining that losing a playoff game is not good enough, and that Kelly is nothing more than a one-season USFL wonder and career NFL backup.

Only a Superbowl win will do, they would whine, and we should have lost EVERY game that season so we could get the #1 overall pick and draft Jeff George! B-)
