Why are people acting like this guy is anything more than depth and special teams?

Our depth guys always end up playing.  Because the NFL is the injury league.  And last year our special teams sucked.  (Good to see Neal was finally cut. Did he make more then half a dozen good plays in his career w the Bills?)

And if this guy can make some plays when called upon at LB.  And maybe be good on ST, then its a strong signing.

    Beane ain't signing scrubs.

This is the only thing that's a little suspect.

He is about Ronnie Lott's size.  And I remember Lott to be amazing.

Matakevich can't play NFL LB.  He might hot be able to play High School LB.  And Klein moves like George Blanda in his later years.  Guy was starting and calling D signals for a team that had just played in the Super Bowl.  I doubt he sucks.  And is probably pretty decent given the numbers he had last year.  Our LB's are always getting injured.  Welcome Nick Morrow.  Lets get you that Super Bowl ring you've been longing for!!

The NFL is just a different class of people. Sorry.

Remember Zac Stacy? And the home video of him slamming his girlfriend into the wall and then onto their baby's stroller? Then he fled the jurisdiction? He got six months in jail for a beating that could have easily killed her.

I saw that video.  That was awful.  Just a bad guy.  Hopefully bad ***** happens to him for the rest of his miserable life..

  4. Floyd was invisible at the end of last season.

I don’t think the Bills had any interest in resigning him.

AJ still has great upside.  What are the numbers on his contract?

Numbers may confirm or change my opinion, but I’m glad we’re staying young and not spending heavy on an aging pass rusher.

Von, Rousseau, AJE, KJ is a room we can roll with if we spend/draft elsewhere.

Still need one more guy SC because Von is no sure thing.  But I like resigning AJ a lot. He should be just coming into his prime.

Jags got better we got worse with thus move

They were a mess at the end of last season.  Not worried about the Jags.  That being said, good for Morse.  Real solid player and a real good leader.  Best of luck.  But won't mind seeing Trevor boy get his assed kick all season long..

lol paranoid ? The thread was about the media coverage and I gave my take, of course there’s a difference between the average football fans take on the Bills and the media take, that’s the point.

If the media were telling the story of an underachieving playoff team due to it’s overrated head coach and lack of elite level talent and bad luck, then most average fans wouldn’t bat an eye or even notice. Having the media talking about Allen’s inability to beat Mahomes on almost every Bills segment is nauseating.

The Bills are in this position to get piled on because they are a contender, so I get why, I’d just like to see more in depth reality as to the reasons why and not just Allen can’t beat Mahomes.

Thanks for explaining yourself.  Narrowing it down to the media always saying "why can't Allen beat Mahomes" makes more sense.  That is always the simplistic and lazy version of things.  Its a team game, way more then individual.  So there can be a lot more reasons then QB 1 beating QB 2.  But most in the national media just go for the easy take, and don't dig real deep.

    It's an interesting post.

I would have Diggs and Cook included in your elites for Buffalo. Douglas is right on the cusp of elite too.

After that, the OP premise is correct with many good players like Dawkins, Kincaid, Oliver, and Douglas. Benford and Bernard look well on their way to being very good just need a bigger sample size.

Of course we lack an elite HC.

But though I refuse to call Beane a genius, he probably is a top 5 and therefore elite GM

One last point, an elite QB probably makes up for 5-10 other elite guys.

No way Diggs is elite anymore.  I would take good and occasionally very good for the next 2 years and be ecstatic.  And that is the best ending that is ever happening for his career w the Buffalo Bills

Douglas was a great pickup last year.  He is tough smart. a leader.  Just a dam good defensive back.

So is he literally counting for $1.2M against the cap for the Steelers, is it really that simple?

If so what a deal for Pittsburgh.....yes he's washed but he's still 10x better than Pickett

Wilson is a cancer.  And he really isn’t very good anymore.

Lol right I mean he'll be 28 before this seasons over

He's just not very good and never has been

He has been decent at times.  Tough player.  Good teammate.  Seems to get nicked up a good bit.  Mediocre hands-can’t seem to catch the low passes very well.  And isn’t winning a lot of jump ball type throws because he isn’t super athletic.  Not a high ceiling player but doesn’t suck.  But certainly seems overpaid for his production.

Kincaid on the other hand can dominate and be a beast every week if he gets a little stronger and we make him a focal point of the offense which I think we will do.

probably not agreeing on terms at the moment is my read.

So Dawkins is currently 15th in AAV at $14.575M.  Next year is his last on his current deal.  What do people see for his extension, years, guaranteed and AAV?  I think his agent will be looking to get him to top 5 given his string of Pro Bowl's, that would put him around $20M AAV.    Unless he is willing to sign for something closer to where he is now, I am not doing a new deal with him but he is tough, he has missed one game in 7 years but you dont pay for the past, you pay for the future.  What are people willing to sign up for?   I think I would let this year play out unless he was willing to take less than he is reasonably able to demand.

    https://overthecap.com/position/left-tackle

Dion has been a good solid (but not great) player for us.  He still gets beat at times and starts getting grabby.  A good leader also.  But not a generational talent.  He is certainly not top 5 at his position.  If we were not going to pay Morse 8 mill this year, I can not imagine Beane paying Dawkins $20 mill going forward.  But I don’t make those decisions for the team.

Maybe Van De Mark can play LT.  Or we draft one next year w a high pick.

Or Dawkins takes a reasonable extension so he can finish his career w the Bills.

Who do you think was better John Fina or Dion Dawkins?

I would have no problem with the constant reminders of Bills playoff failures if they reported the reasoning truthfully, but they do not.

It feels like the Bills are the only team fuc*ing things up every season if you listen to the media, the rest of the teams who either don’t make the playoffs, don’t win their division or lose in the playoffs are just given a free reset by the media and treated as though their failures didn’t happen or don’t matter.

If you didn’t actually watch the league and just watched the media coverage, you’d come away thinking the Bills are a mediocre loser franchise. I’m guessing the media outlets and pundits are aware the mafia engagement rises with negativity and the rest of the leagues fan bases love to hear how this dominant franchise with it’s elite QB haven’t won anything and most likely won’t in the future, it’s a win win for the media.

Wow you sure sound paranoid.  I follow the Bills religiously   And I try and stay on top of the rest of the NFL as much as I can.  Who is bashing the Bills?  We have done well the past 6-7 years.  Have a great QB.  And an overall exciting team.  And a great fan base. But we haven’t played in the Super Bowl.  And our head coach is a pretty bland guy. And KC has won 3.  And played in 4 in the past 5 years.  So of course they will get props.  Colin Cowherd always give us props.  And so do many others who aren’t just fixated on black QB’s.

I just worry about what the team is doing to improve in the offseason and how we are building our team.  Also what other teams are doing.  Because I just love the NFL. And like to be in the know.  I don’t listen to all the jibber jabber because I don’t think it matters.

There are 31 other teams in the NFL. And we’ll over 100 D1 college teams.  I like to talk w fans from other teams than nine. (Bills and Michigan Wolverines) and get their take on things.  Most respect the Bills and the Wolverines, as they should.  So I don’t know where all this paranoia is coming from.  When we win the Super Bowl we will be the king of the castle.  And that is how it should be.

Eh there's a fair number of good ones.  Plus the older players can hang around at the position a bit longer.  In the younger group you have bates, hamilton, winfield, holland, hufunga.  In the older group its guys like simmons, mathieu, minkah, budda, derwin, etc.

Those guys are good players, but not overly special.  Except for probably Hamilton.  The guys in the post you responded to were all HOF or border line HOF players.  The game has changed where big hits are not what safety's do anymore.  They basically are zone corners covering the deep part of the field.  Defense has basically become a D Line and 7 guys between 190-225 pounds running around trying to be disruptive.  They all seem pretty interchangeable except for a few special guys who can play boundary corner and cover the games best WR's one on one.  The perfect example of that was the  Cowboys defense.  That did not work out so well against the Bills, or the Packers in the playoffs.

Think about this.  The Bills play little Taron Johnson as a hybrid LB at times.  That would never have happened years ago.  Very interesting.

Do we have any appetite to sign Gilmore?  Could maybe get him on a modest 1 year deal to return to Buff to try and win another Super Bowl prior to retirement.

He was terrible for the Cowboys at the end of last season.  He had nothing left against Green Bay in the playoffs.

All these cold responses I think are missing the point.

I expected all of these moves, I felt they all needed to happen, so no surprise here from me and no disagreement with any of the moves.  But that that still doesn't mean its not sad to see the door close on their careers here, especially given how important they were to the team and locker room.

So I don't know...maybe save the harsh "good" to see them go comments for another thread.  Cuz I think the sentiment here is that while its the right move, its a bit of a bummer these guys time in Buffalo is done overall as they were huge parts of the team and community for long periods of time.  Talking about several fan favorites too.

I don't really see the point to celebrate or mock their departure...myself, I find myself just appreciating their time here and wishing them well where ever they go or do next.

No one is mocking anything Alpha.  Tre’s time came and went due to injury.  He hasn’t really been a major part of the team in over 2 seasons.  He had a great start to his career.  But the second part was all injury.

Poyer was a stud who brought his best every week.  I loved his game.  But he lost a a step or two.  Time to go.  That’s pro sports.  Real good guy and a good leader.  But we need better then Poyer could give anymore.

Morse was a war horse.  Old school tough player.  Great leader also.  But he was expensive and we had to make the move.  A very good player and much respected.

But you can’t look back.  We need to be better next season. I think Beane today is laying the groundwork for that.  And that’s what really matters.

FWIW I still wear my Bruce Paup jersey sometimes for big games. But I am not sad he is long gone from the team.  That’s sports.  Hopefully full of good memories.  And love the players while they wear your team’s colors.

i do miss Wayne Gretzky playing still.  But he is a special case.

Who loses playing time if they bring Jerry in and draft a speedster? I want Shakir out there and jeudy won't be cheap.

Diggs wasn't playing 90-100% of snaps this past year.  There is plenty of footballs for everyone.  And I like Shakir also.  But nothing wrong with having at least 4 good WR's.

Never wanted Payton. Not even as the McDermott hater that I am. But blaming Payton for all the moves the GM made is pretty ridiculous. Now, with that being said I give more blame to McDermott in this case because he was the first hired of our HC and GM. He recommended the GM. It has been proven that he reports directly to Pegula. He clearly has more say and weight than other imo. At least in this teams history of HCs.

on another note, it was absolutely stupid for the broncos previous staff to even trade for Wilson in the first place. Giving up as much as they did was crazy. And giving him a new contract even more crazy. Wilson is a head case. He’s an egotistical brat that cries like a baby when he doesn’t get his way. The douche insisted he had his own office in the stadium or offices. Way to alienate yourself from the team. Acting like you’re better than everyone else. That’ll make your OLmen really want to block for you. Payton did what he had to do to cut out the cancer and get rid of it before it spread. It wasn’t his idea to bring Russ in and he was only dealing with it as he could at the time. I’m assuming things came to a head and he had no other choice but to cut the best.

With all that said I’d still rather have McDermott than Payton. But that doesn’t mean I want McDermott. Comparing the 2 are like apples to nutty buttys. Mmmm. Nutty Buddys

Great post about Wilson.  Agree completely.  He really could be done at this point.

Seattle just took Denver to the woodshed on that trade.  Pete Carroll is still laughing about it.

That was Dave Shula. Mike Shula is the guy who bombed at Alabama before Saban.

Thanks for that tidbit.  I remember Mike too. The younger Shulas did not quite follow well in their Dad's footsteps.  Maybe they should have worked at his steak houses in S. Florida instead..

Huh, interesting. Wonder what one does to get fired from this rather low level position?

Was Mike Shula the Shula who coached the Bengals into the abyss in the 90's after Sam Wyche left?

That guys record was absolutely terrible.

  20. 4 minutes ago, WhitewalkerInPhilly said:

The answer is obvious: the Russ' contact post cut means they are getting hammered on the cap. Wilson alone will be $35 M this year and $50 M next, simply to not have him on the team anymore. Combined with not having a QB they have a massive millstone around their necks until 2026. A prudent thing to do would be to make cap room and ship off vets with expiring contracts for draft picks.

The problem with the Bills moving on it is that these players, while good, aren't a perfect fit for our needs and cap situation. Jeudy, while a great player, is more of the role that the Bills have for Shakir. Sutton has a $12 M base salary for the next two years that the Bills would be on the hook for.

I am sure we could make good use of Jerry Jeudy as a starting WR with Josh Allen.  If a guy can run fast, run good routes and has solid hands, he can play for us regardless of who else we have.

That's like saying we can't have more then one Stefan Diggs.  LOL

The NFL comp pick formula is very dumb in my opinion but the Bills at the very least got the third for Edmonds

I am pumped about the 3rd round pick for Edmunds.  The best value we got since we drafted him was the 3rd round comp pick for letting him go.  I knew there had to be something good about over drafting Tremaine Edmunds in 2018.  Thank god Beane and the Bills moved on.  Terrell Bernard is such a better fit for our defense.

He was excellent.  Mortenson and NFL Football were just synonymous with each other.  Sad to see how sick he looked in his later years.  But the guy kept doing what he loved until the end.  That is awesome in itself.  God bless him and his loved ones.

It's a video of "Brutal Hits". So, they are targeting big hits, which are obviously going to have penalty implications for today's game.

But if you sit down and watch a game from back then, you'll have maybe a few hits that would be penalties today, but not really that many.

Go on You Tube and watch the season recap of the 1970 or 1971 NFL season.  It was unbelievably brutal the hits that were being put on QB's back then.  And the tenor of the video was how positive this was.  And that the fans were loving the game more and more.  Interesting to see how the game has changed.  I started watching in the early to mid 70's when I was a youngster, and the game certainly has changed.  It was good then.  And it is still good now.  It was just glamorized back then as a gladiator sport of violence physicality and intimidation.  With the Raiders and Steelers symbolizing that.  The Vikings and Rams were also considered very physical teams back then.  But the same can be said about hockey as well.  Completely different game today then 50 years ago.  And life in general from 50+ years ago til now has evolved the same way.  Watch videos of protests in the 60's and 70's.  The cops used to beat the tar out of protestors with impunity.  Now they tiptoe around afraid to do much of anything.  You decide which was a better way.
