  1. He was suspended because he took money from an agent.

If Luck is available, they should draft him without hesitation. If they decide to draft defense, they should draft MARCELL DAREUS from Alabama. He is already playing in a pro-style defense, instead of not playing at all. He can stuff the run and rush the passer, both qualities the Bills desperately need.

However, you might be right because this team needs another sophmore player who can't play the run who has a lot of upside even though he has a small resume, and he has questionable judgement to boot.

  2. I think that the other thing that the Colts have had going for them has been consistency. The Bills have also drafted the same position multiple times, and have had to completely rebuild their rosters because of philosophy chances.

I also think that the multi-head GM and Marv Levy experiment were big mistakes. Hopefully, Nix will provide the direction to rebuild this team.

Ralph Wilson has been part of the problem, not because he doesn't spend enough money, but because this team has been mis-managed. The biggest mistakes have been the personel decisions much higher in the organization then the first round draft choices. If the organization has the correct General Manager, who can get the correct coach, the individual draft choices and misses will have a far less detrimental affect on the organization as a whole. One can see the same draft misses with the Patriots as well. Also, it wasn't just Polian, but the slide in the organization can be seen at the time that Butler was forced out.

The big question is whether Nix is a competent GM. So far, he seems the be doing well; however, it will be this off season when the Bills have to make a series of personel decisions such as defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator, quarterback, offensive line, linebacker.

  3. Takeo Spikes is playing well for San Francisco. I remember the Bills releasing him because of an injury. I'm sure he would be a valuable addition. The biggest questions I would have are:

    1) Can he come back?

    2) What kind of player will he be?

    3) What are the chances of him getting injured in the future? Is he now injury prone?

    4) How much will he cost?

    5) Who else could we use that money on?

    6) Who will we replace?

    7) Can the Bills sign him for longer than this year, after he has healed?

    8) Will this be a short-term deal so he can heal and go somewhere he would prefer?

    9) What will be the strategy to determine if he will be in the long term plans if they sign him?

Yes, there are a lot of questions, and I'm not sure this is exhaustive.

  4. I wish someone in buffalo's org was this overrated at drafting first round talent.

I would have to say the Bill Polian seems to be doing just fine comparatively. It is very normal to have a couple of busts or players, but his ten year track record is getting more talent at lower draft positions. Wow, it's been a while since the Bills drafted a pro-bowler in the first round, especially one that doesn't have character issues.

  5. If Luck is available, they should get him. I'm not sold on Locker, maybe because of the Nebraska game.

I like Marcell Dareus. I think Alabama plays a pro-style 3-4, so I think he could step right in. I do not want the Bills to draft Quinn. It will be way to high. I don't think he will be Maybin 2.0, but Marshawn Lynch 2.0.

As far as best player available, do the Bills select A.J. Green WR, Patrick Peterson CB, or Prince Amukamara CB?

It doesn't seem that there are any highly rated offensive linemen, and outside linebackers can be found at the end of the first round and start of the second.

Another thought in the second round as far as best player available, should the Bills draft Stefen Wisniewski?

  6. In my mind, the Bills needs are the following:

Defensive Coordinator. I know they have an issue with personel, but I do not think it is all personel.

Quarterback: Fitz is looking good, but if the Bills can get a hall of famer, well do what you gotta do.

Right Tackle: This is a major weakness.

Outside Linebackers: There is no pass rush. Maybin is looking like a bust.

Left Tackle: At the very least they need depth.

    Inside Linebackers: They need playmakers.

With that in mind, if Luck come out they should grab him. Otherwise, I think they should select Marcell Dareus. They need help. I think the defensive line is serviceable, but they should reach for need so high in the first round. They need playmakers.

With the second selection, they should select Joseph Barksdale, OT from LSU. Or they could go Akeem Ayers from UCLA at outside linebacker if he is available. I think they should get the linebackers in the second and third rounds since this is a good area to get quality starters. I absolutely want them to avoid Robert Quinn, who seems like another Marshawn Lynch to me, and I do not care about his talent level.

Steven Friday in the third, another rush outside linebacker. Then use the two fourth round picks on TE and OT.

I would be very happy if they focused on defense, then selected the quarterback in two years, since it is much easier to develop a quarterback when there is a quality team around him.

  7. Isn't it funny that in pre-season we thought that it would be offense that would struggle and the defense that looked pretty good.

On the other hand, the Bills do not have the 3-4 linebackers. I also think that the players are not used to playing in a 3-4 so they are making mistakes, being out of position. If Fitz and the offensive line keep improving, the Bills could select in the draft:

    1st: Marcell Dareus, DE

    2nd: Akeem Ayers, OLB

    3rd: Steven Friday, OLB

That would change the personality of the defense pretty quickly.

  8. If they could hire Wade as the defensive coordinator, I think they should. He was a good coach with the Bills, especially considering who they have had since then. The defense was one of the best when he was around. It would definitely be an improvement.

I don't think it would happen, but it would not be a bad hire.

  9. The one piece of the equation that people are missing is the availability of a franchise quarterback in the draft.

The biggest mistake that the Bills made when drafting JP Losman was selecting Lee Evans first. The Bills had the opportunity to draft one of three franchise quarterbacks. They could have traded up, which is what the Giants did, and what they did later in the draft.

If there is a franchise quarterback the Bills should go after him, otherwise any other position would be better. It is too early in the process, but the Bills definitely need to draft a quarterback.

I'm glad that the Bills selected CJ Spiller because there wasn't a franchise quarterback they could have had, and I'm really glad that they finally didn't reach for a player who had been moving up mock drafts in a position of need, like JP Losman, Eric Flowers, and Arron Maybin, or a player of questionable character in a position of need, Marshawn Lynch, James Hardy, etc. (Marv didn't you say you were going to take character into account, this part really bothered me because it was something they were not going to do!)

The Bills need help at quarterback, offensive line, and linebacker. As long as they do not select another cornerback or running back, or do not make the same mistakes about reaching for a position of need, I will be happy.

  10. I think the Bills need to keep drafting quarterbacks until they find a franchise quarterback. That is the one lesson I took away from San Diego. Sure, they missed on Leaf, but they drafted Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers. Keep going until you get the quarterback. They have the longest careers, and they have the most important position.

  11. Know the Bills luck, Luck will stay in college for another year. I'm not sold on Locker because he should be winning more games. If he is so good, why is his team bad?

The Bills should definitely select a quarterback if one is available. I think that it is hard to trade out of the 1st pick, especially if there isn't a clear pick. I think they can get a tackle in the beginning of the second round. I would like them to stock up on draft picks because it gives them more chances to get lucky, which is what they need because they draft so poorly.

Oh, did you see the tackle Luck made, it was awesome.

  12. I would worry about Locker because his team isn't winning. I just think he could be a Ryan Leaf kind of guy. I would like to see him be able to lead his team to victory. Now, if the Bills select him in the second round, maybe. On the other hand, the Bills need to get the best quarterback that they can. Luck looked really good in the game against Oregon, but here again, I don't know, it's the scouts jobs to know. I just would like them to bring in someone with a winning attitude, and I don't know how they do that with someone who doesn't win.

  13. Is it just me or does he sound like Ross Perot?

Everything that he said makes sense and was honest. There is a lot of work to do. They are building through the draft, and I think that they had in mind all along that if Trent didn't work out that they would draft a quarterback next year. I'm sure they wanted to see whether they could coach Trent up because he has looked good in spurts, but he just doesn't have the confidence anymore.

I'm not sure that they received any good offers for Marshawn before since people thought they would cut him because of the off the field stuff.

I'm curious to see how much rope they give Maybin. He is definitely a project, and he was a mistake to draft where they did. For a fifth rounder, maybe, but with all the other people available, he was a classic draft mistake. They were thinking he would turn into Jevon Kerse, which he didn't.

It will take time, and I have more confidence since they have a real GM now, but we'll see.

  14. Their schedule is a lot harder than it used to be. Miami, NE, and NY are all better, and the other teams that the Bills will have to play are better.

The Bills are rebuilding again. They are not going to sign short-term help to win games, since it would hurt their draft status. They gave Trent a chance, but he could cut it so the team is tanking the season. The players know it after Trent was cut. The rest of the season is going to be pre-season so Chan can get his guys.

Bill Parcells was 3-13 with Brunner at quarterback his first year with the Giants.

He was 5-11 his first year with the Patriots.

He was 9-7 his first year with the Jets, after they went 1-15 with Kotite.

He was 10-6 his first year with Dallas.

He was 11-5 his first year with Miami. (If you count his time as a GM).

I think it is going to take time. Parcells definitely had a easier time as his reputation grew, and just as importantly, he was able to poach his old teams for players. I think the collective bargaining situation hurt the free agency market.

Personally, I think it is difficult for the Bills to get big name coaches because it is a small city in decline, and the team can move at any time since the owner is so old without a succession plan in place. He is a lot better than the prior coaches. (I'm glad to see Greg Williams is doing well).

Wish I had answers, but he just cut the starting quarterback, and people thought the offense would improve. Folks, we are officially in rebuilding mode, once again. Has it been three years?

  15. I don't think it would work, they got a lot of traction out of the option. It seemed a lot like the wildcat. Oregon looked really good, but I honestly couldn't tell who might make it in the NFL. I guess the running back, but he seemed more like a 3rd down running back like Meggat. Luck looked good. I'm probably going to be watching more Stanford football then Bills future. Thinking of next year.

  16. I'm not sure that the Bills are trying to win this year. I know his production has gone down in NE, and he is probably asking for too much money. However, he would be an improvement over Kelsey, since he can actually play outside linebacker. I just think that the Bills are winning to have a bad year so that they can draft a quarterback.

  17. I don't understand the animosity toward Kelsey and Stroud. The team needs to find replacements before they release the players. Would the team be better off with Adielous Thomas? What kind of contract would they have to give him? Are they keeping Kelsey because they plan on drafting OLB's next year so why not keep him, give him a chance to play LB since he is an undersized DE?

Stroud was considered one of the best DT in the league. He has been enthusiastic about moving to DE. He played well in pre-season, and it is a position that doesn't get big numbers. I don't understand the hate.

  18. What I'm hearing in the difference between the quotes is that the Jets have had more success in the short period of time that he's been with the organization, of which he has contributed only slightly. (see all the threads about his numbers last year).

On the other hand, Edwards has been involved with an organization which has been struggling to say the least. I don't think the Bills have been horrible in the same sense as Detroit, but you can definitely hear it in the quote. It just re-affirms my belief that he's lost some confidence. Chan has got to commit to the run. If they are stacking the box, play-action. This is not a team that will beat anybody playing one-dimensional football out the shot-gun.

If the Bills are going to have any chance at all this season, Chan has got to do a better job managing the quarterback position. At the end of the day, who cares what they say at the press conference. I think Trent could have gone off on the play calling and the offensive line, but that is better off handled behind closed doors, so he tried to say something that sounds innocuous.
