  1. I guess San Fran is getting excited about Manning. I am so glad that the Bills signed Mario. I really believe that it will be like the year that Brees and Culpepper. I know it is a win now league, but the team that wins the bidding war for Manning is going to get the winners curse. Even Polian on the NFL network stated, that the problem is that it takes so much money to pay Manning that the team cannot pay other talented players. Polian also said that it was worth it because Manning makes the rest of the team better, but I'm not sure how long that will last.

  2. I think the biggest reason it didn't work and the core reason that the Bills have struggled for the last ten years is that it takes time to accumulate the talent to play the different schemes. The Patriots and Steelers developed their teams over time and have had a lot of veteran players. The Bills have been in the habit of cleaning house.

It is also helpful when a team has a scheme that other teams do not use since there will be less competition for players. The Patriots had done a good job of finding players that fit their scheme without having to break the bank. Remember when the Patriots would sign people at the end of free agency for relatively small contracts? Of, course, they used three very high draft picks on defensive linemen, which was the foundation of the defense.

As far as 3-4 vs 4-3, I remember a lot of posters saying they preferred the 3-4 and happy Gailey made the change after Dick Juron. Now granted, Meatball has only gotten better and finding outside linebackers has been a problem.

I'm happy since the Bills are going in the right direction. I could not stand all the years where the only positive thing we could say was addition by subtraction.

  3. The Bills definitely need to find two pass rushers, either one in free agency and one in the draft, or two in the draft. I think drafting a pass rusher in the 1st round and another in the 2nd round would be a good idea.

The biggest lesson to learn from the Giants is not to make foolish decisions based on need. It is very important to get the best quality player at the place the team is selecting; otherwise, the team will be in purgatory of mediocrity. I wasn't that bothered by the CJ Spiller pick since he is a quality player.

There seems to be a lot of pass rusher in the draft this year, so the Bills may have gotten lucky. I would take Coples since he is the consensus top selection, and it really bothered me when the Bills tried to out-think everybody by selecting Maybin.

  4. So the Giants were brilliant because they selected JPP, but are they idiots because they selected Marvin Austin and Prince this year? Both of those guys have been injured. Heck, the Giants left tackle Beatty is always injured. They have a guard playing left tackle.

I'm happy with Nix as far as the draft. Maybe, Troupe will have injury problems, but that happens. The first year, they selected a lot of developmental players, kind of like JPP. After Green, they did a good job finding anyway to improve the offensive line. Sure there is more work to be done, but there is definite improvement.

I remember when everybody wanted the Bills to play a 3-4 because the Steelers and Patriots defenses were destroying teams. You can't fault Nix for drafting Maybin because he didn't, but I can fault him for letting him go for financial reasons instead of finding him a role as a role player. I'm also worried because last year Nix said that they wanted Whitner back, but the 49ers signed him to a very reasonable contract. Outside of not living up to unrealistic expectations, Whitner is a good player, and for the right price why not? I mean should Green Bay cut or not sign Hawk because Clay Mathews plays better? This makes me really nervous about Steve Johnson, one of only two true stars on offense. It would be like Carolina letting Steve Smith go, just bad.

I am happy that they seem to be going for the best player available instead of picking by need. I would rather have Spiller than Maybin, Whitner, JP Losman, Eric Flowers, McCargo, etc. The team should make sure the player is not a bust than worry about position. Anyway, Lynch was on his way out of town. The mistake was drafting him to begin with. Levy said they wanted character, then drafted Lynch, sheesh.

Merriman is stop-gap, so oh well. If the best player is a left tackle, then I would be fine, but to take Bulaga just because they need a tackle is the typical Buffalo Bills mistake, and I can't believe that there are fans on this board rooting for it. Ralph hasn't been cheap, his GMs have stunk since Butler left.

Lastly, I think the Bills might actually be a player in free agency now that the teams identity is coming together.

  5. I agree that the Bills made a big mistake with Losman. They should have traded up. I also believe that they shouldn't panic. I see progress with this team. I'm not sure why, but I am definitely tired of firing and hiring new coaches. I hate this constant rebuilding.

I would be very happy if the Bills draft a left tackle in this draft, let some of the young players develop, and draft a quarterback next year. This way the quarterback will have a decent team around him.

  6. It seems that everybody is assuming that the Bills will go back to a 4-3, but I'm not so sure.

I think the defense is a bigger issue than offense. I think Chan has done a good job of finding offensive players, especially along the offensive line. The depth is definitely better.

The biggest need on defense is at least one pass rusher. I think the Bills could also use a run stuffing NT. Troup has not developed and has been injured. I would like to see the Bills draft Courtney Upshaw in the first round and pickup Josh Chapman in round two or round three. The Bills could use another physical corner.

On offense, the Bills need another wide receiver. QB, TE, LT would be nice to have.

A Left Tackle would upgrade our offensive line to premier.

If the Bills are going to play 3-4, they will have to find a NT.

If the Bills are going to play 4-3, they will have to find DE. I think this will only happen if Coples falls to them. There are a lot more pass rushing OLB than DE.

I'm hoping they go defense heavy again; although, a first round LT would be nice since the team started falling apart when the OL started falling apart because of injuries.

  7. He outplayed Reves, so I think he deserves to be resigned. Besides Manning, who should the Bills give the money to? Or are you suggesting that Ralph keep the money?

Whitner was underpaid in SF. London Fletcher is underpaid. The Bills were under-compensated for Evans & Lynch. I guess it would be wonderful if the Bills could have the lowest payroll.

Actually, I really like the fact that the Bills have come from behind players who nobody expected to make it such as Fitz, Jackson, and Johnson. I hope they get paid, and I hope they stay will the Bills.

  8. I agree with a lot of posters who complain about the desire of the fans to cut players. It sometimes feels like they would like revenge on the players for not living up to expectations.

As far as cutting Merriman, isn't it possible that the Bills cut Maybin a little too soon. Maybin did not fit as an everydown, run stuffing linebacker, but he could have been used as pass rush specialist. Wouldn't that have helped the team more than having Spencer Johnon playing outside linebacker?

The Bill shouldn't cut anyone unless they have a replacement. I understand the team is rebuilding, but it is frustrating because we hear both the complaints about how the team was not able to fill all the holes in one draft and how they should cut every veteran player.

I agree with the statement about who cares about the cap space since the Bills have been basing all of their decision on cash to the cap. The Bills need two new outside linebackers, and Merriman can keep the spot warm until they find them.

  9. Is it just me or does Peter King's idea of the leagues idea of mixed feelings are that mixed:

When I've talked to owners and league officials about the Buffalo-Toronto thing, I sense there are three ways of thinking. One: When the team is owned by someone other than Ralph Wilson, the bottom-line people hope the team is moved to where it'll make more money. Two: Traditionalists hope the team can always have a footing in Buffalo, perhaps in the 5-3 split between Buffalo games and Toronto games. Three: Some owners would love to see an NFL franchise in Toronto. So my real sense is that the league has a lot of mixed feelings about what to do in Buffalo long-term.

    1. Move the team.

    2. Move the team partly to Toronto.

    3. Move the team completely to Toronto.

    MONDAY MORNING QB - TUESDAY

I think the owners would make the same mistake as baseball. Florida is growing, we should have teams there, even if no-one shows up or roots for the teams. Houston, Jacksonville, Carolina, etc. They stink.

The Bills need to win to get people excited about the team so they can't move the team like they couldn't move the Browns.

  10. I think it is great to get excited about 7th round players and undrafted free agents. Hopefully, he will keep working and keep his weight in check so he can make meaningful contributions to the team.

You know what I like about him is that unlike Mike Williams, who was also drafted for his size, Jasper appreciates the opporunity he has been given and is willing to work hard.

  11. I would like to see him standing next to Merriman. I thought he should have been an OLB in a 3-4 coming out, which is what will fit his body type. He has a lot of work to do, and it is up to the coaching staff to ensure he has the correct regiment to reach the muscle and weight that is expected.

I do not think that it is so much his weight, as it is technique. He has only one move which is easy for the offensive linemen to counter. This is what he need to work on.

I know that everybody is upset about the Bills selecting Maybin, but I think that was a good draft class because the other selections have all made majore contributions, and drafting is a crap shoot. We could be having the same coversations about Robert Ayers or Larry English. In hindsight they should have drafted Josh Freeman. Oh well, can't do anything about it, and at least, it got Dick Juron fired.

  12. Your bias is very evident, and you demonstrate a complete ignorance of economics. The agrument you are making is very similiar to the historical agruments against middlemen, which is not born out by reality.

First, if the players are what drive the sport without anything else, then why don't they just create their own league?

How about we fire management for all of airlines and let the pilots get all of the money and see how that works out?

You could have a free market if it were illegal for the players to unionize. Currently, they are still a union because you have union representatives suing in court. The idea that there is no union is more legalize then reality.

I like the comment about how you do not want the government to confiscate the money, but if the government doesn't get the money it isn't confiscation. Sure, eminant domain is confiscation if they give the land to another owner.

Green Bay is a corporation, not a public entity. The league prefers to have a single voice in its franchises. I like the Green Bay model because it is more responsive to the fans. Oh, the NFL is a loose franchise model, like Burger King and McDonalds.

I am absolutely convinced that the an owner run league will be more responsive to the fans than a player run league.

    1) Players are too defuse, the rich players will dominate and will have their narrow interests at heart.

    2) The players cannot come up with a vision of the NFL. You can see this in their statements, they do not want parity.

    3) The players will not be concerned about the quality on the field. Mike Williams will have more power to determine the direction of the franchise and there will be more Mike Williams.

I think that the NFL will be more like the NBA where players have a lot of power. There will be a few important teams and a lot of bad teams. I will be very depressed because the Jets will compete against the Patriots to play the Redskins, Giants or Cowboys in the Super Bowl, and the every good player the Bills are able to get will be signed by one of those teams once they are good. Oh, the only players the Bills will be able to get will be seventh round draft choices.

  13. It is certainly feesible that the Bills will be purchased and moved to Toronto. Whoever purchases the franchise will probably not use their own cash, they will finance the purchase. I think that it is too early to say what will happen because Ralph is still alive.

There are issues with moving the team to Toronto:

    1) Will the Buffalo fanbase support a Toronto team? Will the fan base support a foreign sports team? Will the new team need to find a new fanbase?

    2) Will the people in Toronto support an American football team? Will the new team have the same type of support as NBA team?

    3) Do the owners feel the new owner will fit in the existing owners? They will want someone who is willing to spend the money to increase fanbase.

    4) Political implications: Upstate is generally republican vs NYC which is Democratic so upstate becomes a swing vote for a lot of state-wide elections. If upstate keeps this role, the politicians will be deeply involved in keep the Bills in Buffalo, i.e. Chuck Shumer. If upstate loses this role, there will be less political influence in the sale of the Bills after Wilson's death.

Personally, I think the best solution is the move the team to Niagara Falls, and I think the state should subsidize it by the same amount as the Yankees Stadium and Citi (TARP) Field.

  14. The only positive that I can think of is how wonderful it will feel when the win a Super Bowl. The glory day Bills were great because of all the years of frustration. When the Saints won, it was especially wonderful because of all the years that they struggled.

I think the only other upside would be that they fired a lot of the people who were responsible for the losing organization. The Giants did it when they hired Bill Parcells, and I am hoping that Chan Gailey and Buddy Nix have the same effect. I will say one thing, I feel that real football people were brought in the run the organization, which hasn't been the case since Butler left for San Diego.

  15. Personally, I believe the Bills should draft a running back with their first pick in the draft on even years, and draft a cornerback with their first pick in the draft on odd years. During leap years, the Bills should trade their second, third, fourth and next year's first round draft picks to get a third round quarterback they can trade up in the first round to get.

  16. First, I really hope that Fitz has a career year and really become successful while playing for the Bills.

I'm not sold on Fitz because I remember being excited in the off-season for Trent & JP. Win a play-off game, and we'll talk. I am also not upset that the Bills did not draft a quarterback. I am really tired of the Bills over-paying, in draft picks, for quarterbacks.

If the team struggles this year, I think they will look to draft a quarterback next year. I really believe that teams have to draft quarterbacks high in the draft and hope it was a good year as well as put good players around them. I like the strategy the Bills are implementing in that they plan to build up the team to make it easier for a new quarterback. I've seen many bad teams draft quarterback and still stink because the team stinks.

The one big concern I have with Chan Gailey is Jay Fiedler.

  17. I think everybody is forgetting Antonio Coleman. OLB is set.

I also think that there was an additional element to the Merriman signing. He is very close to Maybin, and I believe that they signed him to be a mentor. If Merriman can't physically hold up, he might be able to make the investment in Maybin pan out.

I think they are thinking about getting as many irons in the fire as possible. Sure, it would be nice if they had enough high draft picks to get impact players, but there are a lot of holes, and this is not a one year turn-around.

It is not really fair to complain about the right tackle position since Brad Butler suddenly retired. Plus, I really don't think that Nix was trying to win this year. It was a rebuilding year, and I really believe they didn't play Spiller that much because they didn't want him to have a serious injury in a year that didn't really matter.
