Great thread OP. Everything suggests the family has taken over and are setting the team up for sale. When they struggled to find a GM and HC not two years ago that was evidence enough to me that no one wanted to work for them. Given the prestige of being a NFL GM or HC, the only thing I conclude is that people know what's happening at OBD and avoid it like the plague. That is, unless you're desperate to get back into the NFL and don't mind a Jeff Littmann cutting your personnel budget and Jim Overdorf trading your players.
So what happens in 2013 when the deal sets a minimum personnel budget, effectively? Or do you think the people running the team have assumed they are done before then?
-
Maybe not in the NFL at large, but is there anyone on the team earning more than $3M who's not starting? That kind of money got Geoff Hangartener cut.
But he wasn't picked up by the current regime, Pears was.

I'll go first. In no particular order:
1) Don't feature a photo of Brian Moorman punting out of his own end zone on any marketing, advertising, or promotional items (like the Bills did last year).
Excellent suggestion.

I think that 6-3 loss to Cleveland, which would seriously make the top 10 worst list of games every played, has to be on the list. We got beat by a team that completed 2 of 17 passes. Really. The entire game was both teams failing to execute any football plays on almost every possession. It was not the most painful loss, but unfortunately our coach did not have the decency to quit at halftime. The entire staff should have been fired and most of the players replaced with street free agents, really.

I will root for the Bills in each remaining game. Otherwise, I think I am going to root for Denver in their non-Bills games; because I enjoy the talking heads being flustered by Tebow winning in spite of all their predictions. I want to see a GB-Denver Super Bowl, but my 2nd choice would probably be GB-NE with NE getting beat again. However, I will not root for NE in any game except against the Jets. I will root for the Jets to fail dismally in any way possible, although I will not wish anyone injuries.

Nobody says he's not talented. They just think he is ultimately not an NFL QB and that the odds are against his long-term success as a passer or in a run/option-centered system as the QB. Teams will figure him out eventually and his inability to pass - and not just throw - don't bode well for him. He's proving people wrong to an extent, so far, but I would take his defense over the Bills' right now, and that is a factor in his success. If teams were running up the score against the Broncos and they were forced to pass to stay in the game, he'd be sunk. Just sayin'.
35-32, seems like a moderately high scoring game...

Every time a team beats the Buffalo Bills, it reminds us of the wholesale slaughter of untold millions of American Bison. We are reliving an environmental catastrophe. How can they be so insensitive?
-
NOOOOOOOOO! It wasn't the celebration man...it was just you falling to the ground....
I believe if he fell to the ground on the Bills' sideline, that is acceptable; falling to the ground in the endzone is a 15 yard penalty. Isn't that the rule?

It seems many people are failing to realize he will get No. 1 money. If not from the Bills, then from somebody else. Deion Branch, Peerless Price, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Roy Williams, Bernard Berrian and a bevy of others that don't immediately come to mind were No. 2s who got paid like No. 1s. You're kidding yourselves if you think Johnson will stay in Buffalo and get paid like a second-tier player.
This is the key point. People can say "sign him for WR#2 money", but it takes both and offer and Stevie signing the contract to make that happen. So:
1) What do people think Stevie's market value is, if he becomes an unrestricted free agent able to solicit offers from any of 32 NFL teams? $ Per year and guaranteed money, excluding any fake years intended to be voided.
2) How much do you believe the Buffalo Bills should offer Stevie Johnson?
My opinions:
1) He can obtain somewhere around 5 years, $40 million but with only ~$15 million guaranteed. I am really unsure of his market value at this time however and the total value may be high.
2) The Bills should franchise him and take more time to decide, even though this will mean paying a high salary next year.
-
I believe his drop and showboating problems are likely to improve. On the plus side, he definitely showed an ability to get separation today. I would attempt to re-sign him, if the coaches agree with the idea that his problems are fixable.

Since some in the NFL will always endorse the "win at all costs" philosophy, Suh needs a 2-game suspension. On top of him costing his team a touchdown, that will make the point that these actions will not be allowed to help teams win. When you can't appeal to decency, deterrence is the only option. The precedent of a 5-game suspension applied to Haynesworth's stomp on a player's exposed face resulting in 30 stitches; despite Suh's attitude this incident cannot be penalized as severely as the Haynesworth situation, since it did not injure the player and was generally less likely to cause serious injury. 1 game suspension for Suh's actions and 1 for his denial/attitude should be fair. As with any other offense, if he continues to play in ways likely to injure other players, he should receive escalating fines and suspensions.

I never understood the timetable they set for themselves to give him a new deal. They went into the season paying him backup money and just as his value was at the up-most peak, you give him 60 Million without seeing how the entire season played out.
What would the market really have been after the season for him?? Higher than 60$ Mil for a career backup? Doubtful....
If he had played at his previous level, yes.
Regardless, if this article is accurate, they did not give him $60 million. So it is a lot easier to understand.

Fitz has not played well the last few weeks. Earlier in the year, he was playing better. It is not just the loss of other players, in several cases today he had sufficient time and an open receiver, and misfired on the pass. In many of these cases he looked like he was rushing the throw even though the pressure was not there yet. However - I am willing to cut him significant slack for today's game, because I believe the constant flow of bad snaps REALLY threw off his timing and poise. I cannot remember seeing such a bad performance by a center in my life. If Levitre was actually a center, I would call for him to be cut. Since he was never meant to be a center, I think he should be returned to play LG or at worst LT.

If you do resign him you bring up his history as far as staying healthy . Give him a contract that would be worth keeping him around , & unlike a lot of these contracts fill it with incentive clauses , all contracts should be FILLED with production or incentive clauses instead of guaranteed money .
The only way a contract should be guaranteed is if you have some one like Arron Rogers as your QB & he has done what he has done or a Tom Brady that's the only guaranteed contracts that should be given !!
This would make the Bills even MORE uncompetitive with respect to most free agents... and they say Ralph is cheap?
As far as Roscoe ... offer a 1 year deal, for a fair amount of money; he is not likely to attract that much interest on the market.
-
Can he snap the ball, rush the passer, or play WR or CB? If no, forget it.
-
I have not been impressed with Gailey, but what choice did he have but to throw the ball when they were down 21-0 before he got his headset working?
Since there was a lot of time left in the game, you don't think that you can score 24-28 points in 3 quarters with a lot of running mixed in (if you are having success running)? I think that when coaches give up on the run because they are behind early, they give away the game. Running also helps you keep the opposing offense (that you can't stop) off of the field. The chances of a fumble are relatively less than the chances of an interception. Now, if you are behind by 14 and it is halfway through the 3rd quarter, you'd better start moving. By the way - can't you hurry up after a rush play? Doesn't the clock stop after a rush out of bounds? What about the 3 timeouts he started the FIRST HALF with? Bad game management to go all pass-happy when you are down 21.
High draft pick here we come. Hopefully another complete draft of defensive players.
What's the CB crop look like?
-
Is it any consolation that FJ will be the league leader in rushing after today, unless AP goes over 122 (50/50)?
-
Could he drop more than Jones?
-
After reviewing the game film, the coaches should cut someone from the team in order to send a message. I'm not sure who, let the coaches decide based on who is not performing their assignments (going out of gaps, wrong place in zone, etc.) At least, send someone to the bench. The team needs to be shaken up.

I am rooting AGAINST the Jets, rather than FOR the Patriots.

That rationalization never gets old.
At Lollapalooza 2008, about 30 mins before RATM took the stage I watched some drunk turn around, whip it out, and start pissing all over the backs of some dude and his girlfriend who were sitting in the grass waiting for the show to start. The urine soaked guy got to his feet and and yelled "dude, you're pissing on me!" to which the drunk replied "IT'S A F#$%ING CONCERT!" and went about his business.
If someone were (unwisely) there with children, I guess that would be a teachable moment??

Speaking of bad behavior, does anyone remember the game where the Jets fans set fires in the stands on Monday Night football? There were also fights bordering on riots, and an inflatable pumpkin. I just looked it up and it was in 1988. I am not sure that it can be said that Bills fans are the worst, or that it has gotten much worse, when considering this kind of situation.

Structure a contract where the guarantees kick in at the beginning of 2012. Like this (for example):
2011: $1.5M signing bonus plus current salary.
2012: Roster bonus of $5M. If the roster bonus is paid, the 2013-2014 guarantees also kick in. 2012 salary of $3.5M, total $8.5M.
2013: Guaranteed $3.5M, total salary $7.5M
2014: Guaranteed $1.5M, total salary $6.5M
2015: $5M option year.
4 yr extension, ~$27M in new money ... but guarantees kick in only in 2012 with a total guarantee of $11.5M - and realistically he will probably not be picked up for the last $5M so it is $24M in new money. I think Fred cannot do much better than this with his contract situation and age and I am not sure the Bills will go this far. However, it will give him $1.5M in money this year, in case of devastating 2011 injury, while protecting the Bills for this year only. Given his performance it is very likely the Bills elect to keep him in 2012. This triggers a total of $10M in additional guaranteed money, plus if he plays 1 game $3.5M salary becomes guaranteed (by CBA) so $13.5M for playing game 1 of 2012 (payable over time). Everything beyond that is gravy.
If he hits the age wall or is injured prematurely, here are the scenarios (based on approx $2M salary in 2012 current contract):
Last year w/ Bills 2011: $1.5M in new money
Last year w/ Bills 2012: $13M in new money
Last year w/ Bills 2013: $17M in new money
Last year w/ Bills 2014: $22M in new money
Last year w/ Bills 2015: $27M in new money
Of course these figures could be adjusted either way depending on your preference, but I think this is the kind of structure that would give the Bills some benefit while also substantially raising Fred's salary when he is most valuable (now and 2012). He cannot get a contract that is equal to his free market value if he were an URFA this year, this is close and will send a positive message to the team.

It's actually kind of a wishy-washy comment. The person says they don't think he will take them where they want to go, but then states that the price was only going to go up so they understand the deal. So, in other words, this person is not really criticizing the contract, just betting that Fitz will not win the Super Bowl. Real strong stand there.

Also re-sign Rian Lindell.

Stevie Johnson: After the INT

I think that people who are in favor of not re-signing Stevie Johnson, should explain who they would like to sign to play receiver, what they will pay them, and what (if anything) they would spend any money saved on. As for "signing" SJ for $5-6 million a year, you can offer him that but you cannot sign him for that unless no other team offers him more. That's the reality.
