I actually have to disagree. While there may not be great mainstream musicians anymore, there are definitely amazing musicians out there. Ayreon (check out "The Human Equation" - there's all sorts of amazing instrucments in there, plus a great story to boot), Dream Theater (John Petrucci is one of the best guitarists out there), Trans Siberian Orchestra, etc, plus tons that I have probably never heard of before. It's not in the mainstream but it's there if you look for it. CW

Actually, I don't think that's the case. Shows on Broadway sell regardless; they may sell more Soundtracks, perhaps (although who would want that over the original, I don't know...). I think Grease is doing it because they take something that would cost them money (a casting call), and are instead MAKING money off of it. It's still smart business, but in a different way than Idol. All of this is my opinion, as I have no stats to back it up, but it seems to make sense.

I haven't seen too much of her (didn't know who she was until Greg the Bunny), but I've seen a few of her sketches and they're pretty funny. There's one, and I don't know what it's called, but she's singing and basically making fun of EVERYONE (Jews, gays, blacks, etc), and then she says something offensive about blacks right in front of these two big black guys and they glare at her, and she cowers back. I don't remember how it ended, but I thought it was fantastic. My wife didn't like it at all. To each their own. CW

Public service announcement: Just a warning that there's a new virus/worm being sent out via Instant Messanger. It'll be a message from someone you know saying something like, "Oh my god, check out this link!!!!" It generally contains expletives as well. The website they want to click is something like www-microsoftliveupdate-biz and spawns up a couple of other sites as well. From what I understand, you'll get at on of porn on your desktop (some people here might not mind that ), but we're not sure what the payload of the actual infection is yet (nor are the anti-virus companies, as of a few hours ago). I know it affects Windows Messagner - not sure what other IM software it will attack. I have no specific links, I'm just relaying what we found at our company this afternoon. CW

I've never worked for a company like that... Must be nice! We've actually lost two staff members since I started this job a year ago (one quit and wasn't replaced, and the other moved into another group and wasn't replaced). We're REALLY thin right now, so we'll see what happens in the next few months. Not that it really matters that much, as I'm going to be making the move into IT security in the not-so-distance future. I already have my CISSP and I'm getting trained in Forensics next month, so who knows how long I'll be at my current place. If anyone knows of any security jobs, PM me CW

I know you were, it just sucks because there's plenty of people who actually DO feel that what you posted is true because they don't see the time that goes into it. We estimated that we've spent around 1200 HOURS* fixing this stupid DST issue, and all of that's been in the last 2+ months. There's 8 of us in the group, but that's still an extra 20 hours/week on top of our regular work. It wouldn't be so bad if there was a benefit to this new DST, but I just don't see one.... * Part of it is that our company has no automated tools, and has a ton of legacy crap that needs to be tossed out and replaced with newer hardware/software but since that costs money, nobody wants to sign the checks to do it. No reason we should be running production on SunOS 2.5 or SCO boxes from 1995.

So you're the defacto IT person, and they always come running to you when ther's a payroll problem. That proves my point
-
If I could build the environment myself, you're right. But when you inherit crap from other people and aren't given the resources to fix it the right way.... Sorry, touchy subject, as I just spent 30+ hours fixing a mail relaying environment that had been overworked for so long and finally tipped over. We've been telling them for awhile that they need to upgrade hardware (because they built it with shoestring and bubblegum....), but nobody listens until it breaks. Combine that with all the after-hours DST crap (that I predict will have NO tangible benefit to the country). I'm sure there's plenty of other IT people here that feel the same way.

I've never seen a payroll person work a 34 hour shift to fix a problem. In fact, if there's a payroll problem, guess who usually gets called in? Yup, IT folks. CW

Touche. Yeah, I thought about that too after he posted

Ummm, if I couldn't remember three, you can infer that I COULD remember 47.... Did you have one of those anti-homework schools?

You must be infatuated with me or something, because you post the same tripe on almost every post I make. Do I need to get a restraining order against you?

All BUT three states.

I feel no pity for you, as I'll lose the entire night of sleep babysitting servers, making sure our infrastructure doesn't have any problems. Thank your IT folks Monday mornig (or Tuesday, if they're not in on Monday...), as there was a *LOT* of behind-the-scenes work done to make sure this change is executed relatively smoothly. CW

I'm with you, I'd do it as well. I learned from the article not to eat anything for a couple of days beforehand though....
