It's a failure if your team doesn't win the Superbowl because that's the ultimate goal. If the Bills go out and win a playoff game but don't make it to the AFC Championship game, that will indeed be disappointing but I think it would still show that this team is getting better and better and in contention.

I'm still a bit skeptical of Daboll. We have no way to know if he is good. We have blamed the offensive shortcomings on a lack of talent and on Josh Allen developing, but even if that is true (and I believe that is), Daboll could still be mediocre. We have the talent now and if Allen is ready to take the next step, it could still be Daboll that holds the offense back. But this season will hopefully help us understand if he is the answer.

Yes I do. Ask me anything.

Alright, are they going to allow fans into the football games in the fall?  The reason I ask is I was a longtime season ticket holder who dropped his seats 5 years ago & I purchased 4 season tickets this Feb for the upcoming season & I am pretty excited about it.  I even bought a new portable weber grill to bring to the tailgates.  So any insight would be appreciated.

Also, are they ever going to open the DMV up sometime this summer.  Reason being my son is 16 & the plan was for him to get his license so he could drive the drunk old man(me) home from the games this fall.

So any insight would be appreciated.

And yet we haven't won the division or even a playoff game for decades.

So no, I disagree. The first step should be winning the division and a playoff game and then we go from there. Obviously the Superbowl is always the goal, but can we realistically expect this team who hasn't won a playoff game to go all the way to the Superbowl?

Anyone who thinks we have a Superbowl caliber team right now is wrong.

You got all the answers don't ya?

for the record, my name is just a pun on Bennett and sea biscuit.  I was young but I remember him being slightly overrated.  Very good but should have been great especially playing with Bruce.  My young mind remembers that our defense was soft and should have been much better with the players we had.

Yeah Bennett wasn't overrated, at least on the Bills.  The year Smith was out most of the year was imho Bennett's best year.  They basically let him freelance that year & just told him to go after the ball.  He was unbelievable in some of the games.  I thought he was pretty good and definitely wall of fame material, at least on the field.

Combining the prospect of a limited season due to COVID, the fact that nearly 1/3 of the Bills games are primetime (or likely to be flexed there) and that even many of the Bills 1pm or 4pm games will be the "national" broadcast...is there any sense in paying DirectTV for Bills games for those of us out of market?

I'm thinking I won't be getting it for the first time in almost 20 years.

You should give them a call middle of August and see if they will throw it in for free.  They maybe a bit more flexible this year due to a lot of people's economic hardship.

Don’t cry too hard that was a work trip so I didn’t have to pay for it ?. It’s pretty brutal though. It’s cheaper to sit down and play while getting a comp drink than it is to go to the bar and order. Whatever you lose at the table is is a better investment ??

Yeah I was there for the super bowl in Feb and the prices for food and drink are sky high now, at least on the strip.  I usually hang out in the sports book, & probably bet about $2 grand worth of basketball games on that Saturday and my friends and I got enough drink tickets to drink for free all day but they made you work for it & that was at Harrah's SB, where they probably have the most lenient drink policy of any sports book on the strip.  I did stop up that Sat to their food court, brought back 3 slices of pizza & an order of nachos, total price tag $49.  Good thing for me I am usually on a liquid diet when I head to Vegas.  I still love it though but miss the days where they would comp everything for a light weight bettor like myself.  It will be interesting to see if they go thru a price reform trying to get the strip back to where it was pre Covid days.

Generally when you give percentages you want them to equal 100%.  My guess at this point is the season will start on time without crowds.  Maybe by the time the 2nd half of the season starts they'll do a lottery system or something and fill 25% of the stadium requiring every 4th seat or so.

Guys there are plenty of other posts where you could give your opinion on what type of season we are looking at.  This post is a tradition here at TBD.  Rich sends down the countdown as soon as the schedule comes out.  It gives everybody something to look forward to.   Not everybody shares your gloom and doom predictions.

If the Bills had to limit capacity to 20K I hope they start with the 20K who have had seasons tickets the longest.  Add a rule that the account holder must be one of the people using the tickets and check ID at the gate.  That shouldn't add much time to entry if only 20K were going.

Offer that deal to the oldest 20K accounts and then see how many opt in.

People who have stuck with the team the longest should have first dibs over someone who picked up seasons recently.  A split might work too, 15K based on seniority 5K based on a lottery.

Not much point selling individual games at this point.

Part of the lure of going to the bills game is getting the game day atmosphere.  Tailgating with friends, grilling out, as one article mentioned describing Orchard Park on gameday, "a high school football setting on steroids."  If they take the tailgate, take away 50K people in the stands you basically got the atmosphere of a poorly attended preseason game.  If that is the case I will gladly volunteer to have my tickets credited to next year & watch the games on TV.

If the season does have a delayed start then that will make those playoff games at New Era in February an adventure trying to stay warm. Maybe have to snowmobile it to the game as well.

Not if it was this year, Jan/Feb we got hardly any snow & temps were above average.  In fact this weekend we are supposed to get a polar vortex which they said will be the first of the season, which unbelievable we are in May.

Employees are unfortunately the ones who are hurt when something like this happens. If for some reason my company lost billions we would not get a pay raise or lose money on our next contact. I work for the 3rd largest energy supplier in the world so I hope that doesn’t happen.

If your company loss billions, my guess is you would be out of a job.

With that being said, I didn't think the number would be that high (3.2 billion) with no fans in the stands, at the end of the day it may not be possible but my guess is the NFL is going to do everything they can to make sure fans are in the stands this fall.  The NFL is a cash cow but $3.2 billion is a hard number to swallow even for them.

There hasn't been a first wave in most areas.  I said before if you take NYC/NJ/Conn region out of the mix, the number then become more manaegeable and a bit easier to swallow.  Although, any death is tragic, certainly in this case

One of the NFL scheduling guys was on WGR a couple weeks ago and said the Bills were the #1 most requested team for prime time games by the tv stations. They looked at the ratings for the Thanksgiving and Pats Saturday night games and see the Bills as the hottest ticket.

That said, I personally am not a fan of getting the Prime Time games since I'm an old fogey. I'll take 16 games at 1pm Sunday please.

But I expect the Bills to get at least 3 Prime Time games.

I am with you on that they get at least 3 Prime Time Games.   I like the 1 pm games too but don't mind a night game or two sprinkled in.

If I may quibble, I believe he said they were starting to get requests for them where they never did in the past. Let's be honest the big draws on the games you mentioned were the Cowboys and Patriots.

I think the Steeler Game was very highly rated also.

Regardless of the other things you mention, the curve hasn't been flattened. The US just had the deadliest day yet..

This is what I mean about spreading misinformation.  Your wrong.  This is a paragraph from an article on some states opening:

The moves come as the daily death toll across the U.S. dropped four days in a row for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic erupted earlier this year. The 1,313 new deaths Sunday followed 1,426 deaths Saturday, 1,947 on Friday, and 2,029 on Thursday.

Survivors guilt is a real thing.

I think the opposite will happen. THE NFL will want higher faster revenues.

The Bills are towards the bottom of the list.

S*** or get off the pot scenario coming, IMO

Yeah I really doubt anything gets built in any state particularly in NY though in the next 5 years or so.  They said yesterday that NYS is facing a 16 billion dollar tax revenue gap this year due to the lockdown & expect it to go as high as 60 Billion gap within the next 5 years.  That is some hefty lifting.  There will be no public funds for stadiums in the foreseeable future

I just did some reading on the 1968 Hong Hong flu . 100,000 dead in the US alone. No quarantine no social distancing. Just recommendation to wash hands. I’m not saying precautions don’t need to be taken, but this was poorly managed, too many with an agenda without science...

This Virus has taken on whole different life of it's own.  I often wonder if this hit in the late 80s, without social media would all this be going on.  Michigan had a protest yesterday with guys having guns over there shoulder with masks on.  If you didn't know anybody you would think the Michigan courthouse was in Beirut or a city similar.  Scary times and it is only a matter of time before one of these protest get out of hand and shots are fired.

College and Pro both have their charms, which is why I like both.

Pro is watching the best football players in the world.  But with this comes the downside that most outcomes are predictable

College on the other hand, with the exception of the CFP contenders, is alot more unpredictable.  I can sit and watch two teams I know nothing about nor care about the outcome, like Arizona vs Washington St and it will interest me more than watching the Arizona Cardinals vs Seattle Seahawks

I don't think pro football is predictable at all anymore at least from a gambler's perspective.  It is kind of become like the NBA where weird sh*t at the end of games cost gamblers on their bets.

I prefer college football much more,  but I have a bit different perspective since I bet a lot of the games.  I love college football Saturdays & would truly miss it if it did not happen this fall.  I still stand by my perspective that CF doesn't work without fans & if they don't allow fans they should just cancel the whole thing.  I will say I am more excited about the Bills this year then I have been in a long time.  Not having fans at the game would ruin that for me too.

Well they have really scared you into submission. Be a good little sheep and stay home and hope for a government hand out. If numbers are going up it’s because testing is increasing. Overall deaths are declining except for the phony crediting every death to Covid it would be a lot lower. The death rate isn’t even close to what the scare mongers said it was going to be. We have destroyed our economy on bad advice and a poor plan from people who are clueless.
The politicians who are trying to re open the economy realize we don’t of the money to do this any longer, the damage done to our children’s economic future will be lasting as it is. People are hurting and need to return to work. Hospitals are empty and worker’s are getting laid  off, some hospitals will have trouble re opening. The whole country wasn’t miss managed like New York, and thank goodness for that, it’s time to re open... Not even the NFL will escape the financial implications of this shutdown.

Excellent post, well done sir.  30 million people on unemployment and the number is going up.  It is amazing that the sheep think we could keep going on this shutdown forever.  Simply mind boggling how clueless people are & willing to just go along with whatever main street media & the government tells you.

Where are these antibody test results that have revealed that published?  Source please?

What I've seen, is a small study in NYS that indicated that NYC may have 21% infection rate.  Outside of NYC/LI region, 3.6% were positive.  So while overall, the state had an average of 14% positive, it's sort of a "statistically, the duck is dead" result, right, where the average isn't terrifically meaningful?  If you live in NYC, Good for You; if you live Upstate, better not count on that 14% immunity.

There's a Santa Clara study that concluded 2.5%-4.2% were infected (the actual rate of positives was 1.5%, and their correction methods are subject to criticism)

There's an LA study of 800 people that concluded 2.8-5.6% were infected (they extrapolated to 8 million people, big jump) - average of 4% positive
There's a Miami study I haven't had a chance to dig into yet that the newspaper reporting says 6%.

I'm not aware of any study showing 15-20% of the population is infected, so kindly share your source and I will break out the tea and cookies to entertain it.  But Herd immunity requires 50-60% immunity for an R0 of 2-3, so even 15-20% is a long way short.

Oh, and there's a study (linked in the Covid-19 facts thread) saying that very few of these antibody tests are accurate - they have many, many more false positives than the test developers claim.

ON that death rate thing:  I've said it before, I'll say it again: we don't know the death rate and can't calculate it yet (as well as untested cases, there are also uncounted excess deaths).  What we DO know is in 4 different countries, in cities where this disease spread unchecked before lockdown, it completely overwhelmed the health care system.  It did this in Wuhan.  It did this in Italy.  It did this in Spain.  And it did this in NYC until lockdown, then it only totally overwhelmed the pre-existing capacity.

Whether the death rate is ultimately 5%, or 0.5%, or 0.05%, it's the high morbity (number of people sick enough to require hospital care) and the duration of care they require that make covid-19 problematic.

My best hope is that one or more of the clinical trials of therapeutics will yield a reasonably effective treatment to keep the health care system functional, able to treat and discharge patients.

An actual detailed, effective plan to protect the health of vulnerable people would also be great, but I just hear empty words so far.

I think we could both agree this has become a very political virus.  In that I mean political parties are in disagreement over solutions/actions to take against this virus.  You act like you are the final word on this virus and anybody that post something positive is automatically wrong.  You do back up your statements with articles, so I give you credit there but....there is so many media outlets with hidden agendas in concerns to this virus that if you look hard enough you will find something to back up your theories.  It is a bit disingenuous if you ask me.

On Good Morning America today they said the MLB is planning on playing games by the 4th of July & plan on playing 100 games in Major League Stadiums.  It will start with no fans & they hope to have fans in the stands by September.  In a different report they said a vaccine which shows great promise could be now ready by September.  Whether this pans out or not who knows.  But it is something to hold on hope for.

My guess is, and it is only a guess is that if it means having fans in the stands the NFL will delay the season by a month into October, same with College Football.  I have said it before, but football, especially college football with there is so much at stake on ticket revenue & money to be made for gameday Saturdays in college towns all over the country does not work without the fans.

Why is this pick so difficult for so man to understand.  He's not done, but he's pretty close.  Why not draft his replacement now? Isn't that the smarter way to do it?

This is exactly right.  The Pack are being proactive with their QB situation the same way when they drafted Rodgers.  Unless injury, Love won't see the field until year 3.  He is a project.  Rodgers cap ramifications if the Pack decided to get rid of Rodgers these next two years is huge.  My guess is AR has two more years in GB & I doubt he helps Love much, kind of the same way Favre really didn't help him.

The only option i see is playing with no fans and isolating the players and staff together. Even as Covid-19 starts to drop, it is suppose to spike back up in the fall. If a fan gets sick at a game and dies. The NFL and team will be sued. It will not get back till normal until a vaccine. Which best case scenario we will have by late 2020, early 2021.

Well if that is the only option you see, it should make it a done deal.  People are tired of being isolated.  Now Cuomo is saying they believe at least 2 million New Yorkers have already been effected with this virus which would leave the death rate % in NY at .009%.  They also think similar numbers are in Cali, which would even make their death rate lower than NY.  Hopefully things will be opening up & that includes sporting events.  At least that is what I am hoping.

  22. That is a weird mixed emotional night for me to remember.  A lot of things in play that night, Columbus day weekend, first home Monday night game in over a decade, the weather was mid summer weather as it heated up to 80 degrees that day.  I remember taking the day off, going golfing in the morning, getting back taking a quick nap & then we headed up to the stadium.  It was an epic tailgating night for all the reasons I mentioned above plus we had like 20 guys at our tailgate that night.  The game was a weird one, we had 2 pick sixes, kickoff return, but for some reason I never felt we were going to win the game.  I remember thinking when they missed the 2 point conversion to tie that now the pokes are going to get the onside kick and sure enough they did.  I remember the final fg kick to win it, my friend said right before the first kick "no worries this guy hasn't kicked a 50 yard fg in his whole college career."  Then he went on to boom two kicks that would of been good from 70 yards out.  Even though the Bills weren't going anywhere that year(I think they were 2-4 going into the game) this one hurt.  I remember getting home pretty late, going on the back patio and having a beer, my wife came down from our bedroom and said "I don't know why you put yourself through this every year"
