Did anyone notice on the bullet overthrow on the left sideline, that if the first receiver didn't hit the ball with his hand, the ball might have been a perfect strike to Benjamin?  I wonder if that was his intended target?  Maybe someone will have a clip of that throw?  Just an observation.

When I watch it again in slo-mo, it looks like 1st Bills receiver doesn't touch it. It looks like the second Bengals defender tips it just before it gets to Benjamin.

  2. I love Josh but Peterman has earned the right to start. Josh just admitted that he had some difficulty diagnosing the defense as the play clock was winding down. Also said he could be quicker getting into and out of the huddle. I think we go with Peterman due to his mental edge over Allen at this stage. I like everything about Peterman except his out throws to the far sideline. I think Dabol can manage that though with play design. Allen's time will come when he is ready.

I like analytics and was against drafting Josh Allen.  The analytics were clear his poor statistical performance against week competition predicted a poor success rate.  His inaccuracy was sure to doom him at the next level.  I bought into it and wanted analytics darling Baker Mayfield.

But the problem with these types of statistical analysis is that it is hard to translate them to individual case by case scenarios. When you get to the individual player there are various idiosyncrasies of their story experience and their career that may produce a result that is statistically improbable on the whole but entirely likely on the individual case.  For instance if a player put together a great college carrier but they struggle with addiction, injury or laziness they individually are far more likely to fail. The prime example of this would be Ryan Leaf, analytics would say he was as likely to succeed as Joe Flacco was but Leaf's individual laziness, bad attitude and addiction issues meant that he was always going to fail.

In his limited preseason game time Allen is demonstrating the opposite of the example above, instead of showing how analytics overvalue some players he is showing how analytics can undervalue one. The issue at hand is coaching, Josh was under-coached throughout his time in football. He attended few QB camps went to a Small time High school, then a small time college. The overwhelming number of QB prospects, especially top prospects went to those QB camps, focused on football in highschool and went to a program far bigger than Wyoming. In other words the concept of having already received top flight coaching is inadvertently baked into the analytics. A player who has not received good coaching naturally has more to learn than a [player who has.

Josh Allen has made huge strides (pun intended) when it comes to his footwork, which has improved his accuracy which was the prime concern about his game. Despite the fact that we are in preseason it is easy to see how his footwork is far better than before the off season. If this improvement continues Josh will be the biggest example yet of how the individual circumstances of a player can be missed by  statistical analysis.

If Josh continues to improve, I think your analysis is right on. Statistics describe or predict features of populations but within each population there is individual variation and outliers - on each side of the average. Hopefully JA will prove to be one of these outliers on the good side. Stats can accurately describe or predict most, but not all individuals.

  4. Going into the season, I was concerned that they did not have the coaches on staff to develop a rookie QB as well as a 2nd year QB. The good play of JA & NP so far has given me some confidence that our coaches are effectively teaching the position. Allen & Peterman are both much improved from their versions last year. Hopefully the trend continues upward.

  5. Go watch the "Every throw from JA" in the Panthers game again. At which point in the video clip is his throw unacceptably inaccurate? On one play it looked like a possible miscommunication with him and Ray Ray. Other than that, I don't see it. I see more WOW plays than poor plays.

In the end, like Rc2 said, its about making plays. It looks to me like he definitely can do that. We'll see in the future.

The crazy thing about this whole Allen story is, Firebough knew what they had in Allen and they couldn’t give him away. He fell into Wyoming’s lap after their first choice got a P5  offer. Everybody crapped all over him the second Mel Kiper mentioned his name. The thought was he could never succeed in the NFL because he didn’t play for a power conference. Wyoming knew what they had though. The Bills fans now see what he is and can become but most people still think he is trash. He’s just going to have to prove himself once again. The kid has not been handed an ounce of credit besides from his coaches, his teammates, and his teams fans who will look past some coachable flaws.

I had never been a Bills fan before the draft, but I am a huge Josh Allen fan and am now a Bills fan because he was my guy at Wyoming. The way JA plays will win you over. He’s going to make dumb mistakes and at times you’re just going to say “what the hell was that” but you’ll use that same phrase when he does something no other person can physically do. I created an account here at TBD right after the draft and it has been funny to see how the tides are shifting from negative JA to I NEED more JA in my life. If he doesn’t start week one, then his last preseason game will be the last time you see one of his “you’ve got to be shi++ing me, that’s not even possible” plays while listening to the media and everybody else bag on him being a bust, all the while knowing you NEED more JA in your life. Just know, JA has been hearing all the hate and he has a fire in his belly that will not let him fail. Soon enough everyone will know too and you will be able to say, “ I told you so”.

Welcome to Bills Nation. Glad to have you on the wagon train. I'm thrilled we were able to move up in the draft to get JA. He is raw but the talent cannot be denied. His throws are going to be on the weekly NFL highlight reels. This is a QB driven league. The big time QBs and their teams are promoted by the league. He can make crazy good throws and he's going to be fun to watch. Other rookie Qbs may have better completion %, but they don't make the throws JA makes.

  7. I've been a Bills fan for over 30 years. Personally, I don't get the fascination with the whole Mafia thing. It sounds like a bunch of drunks puffing their chests out trying to act like tough guys. I wish Josh would stop mentioning them like they define the fan base. Why would anyone want to glorify a criminal organization?
