Buddy put himself out to pasture after the draft, in which he stated many times publicly that he would leave after "getting his guy" at QB (EJ Manuel)
He did, but EJ and Cardale Jones means Whaley doesn't have a clue about qbs and is a bad GM.
-
Whaley is good at lb.
We'll get some fast fella later in the draft for cheap.
-
is this the epic greatness we get now that BBMB has been shut down?
sweet jesus
Epic greatness in shout mode, no less.

The trick would be for us to land both Mahomes & Williams!
Go Bills!!!!!
I have been trying to figure out how we could reasonably or even somewhat unreasonably pull off that trick.
I don't think it's possible unless Mahomes falls into the second. MW is going top fifteen and probably top ten.
If you trade back, you don't get him. You'd have to trade up to get Mahomes and I don't think we have the fire power.
I suspect Mahomes goes in the first. If you have to choose, I take the qb.
-
I think enthusiasm for Mahomes is more real than hype, but one can always speculate it is smoke this time of year.

More LaClickbait... please disregard.
The Whaley haters don't care.

I can tell you from my experience that every single athlete in the world's number 1 priority is taking care of their family. There is not a person in sports that goes to work for "the team" first. These guys make a lot of money in a short period of time. Their earning window is small.
You will occasionally see a well established guy with lots of money take a little less (for a year) to try to chase a championship. That is the exception and not the rule. A player needs to maximize his income and a team needs to set what they believe is a fair market value and stick to it. In no way will I ever criticize someone for trying to make more money. That is the EXACT same thing that all of us do in our jobs.
An athlete's career, if he's lucky, is the lifespan of a dog. I don't blame them for maximizing their earning potential, but I allow myself the irrational anger when it means they don't sign with the red, white, and blue.

they'd be fools to play Misi at Will. He's slower than Ragland. He played Sam mostly, and should stay there. And if they don't get a better option at Wlb,Kiko should move there, and either Timmons or draft pick should play middle. This is just opinion of course
If he signs with us?
Wlb Zach Brown
Mlb Preston Brown / Rookie (Jarrad Davis)
Slb Reggie Ragland
If he signs elsewhere. ..
Wlb First round draft choice
Mlb Preston Brown
Slb Reggie Ragland
Or finally. ..
Wlb Preston Brown
Mlb Reggie Ragland
Slb Zo Alexander
The last variation is the most likely. Ragland is definitely going to be the MIKE, even if Zach Brown is signed.

Want - Lattimore
Don't Want - Trubisky Fournette or Cook
Dark horse - Mahomes
Think - Lattimore
I'd be really surprised if Lattimore is available at #10.
-
Dbs and a lb, the worst. Have fun with that.
-
Yea. Should have just paid Gilmore.
The consensus on this board about him is wrong. He is really, really good.
I think he's quite good, too. At the price the Pats* paid, that's a lot of dough. Especially if McDermott's zone scheme doesn't require fellas on an island, so to speak. I just hope OBD doesn't feel compelled to take cb at #10 now.
-
He's a class fella. I will be rooting for him to play well.
-
That is one variable and IMO, certainly not close to the root of the roster mismanagement.
I think not focusing on the lines has been a bigger issue over the years, outside of course finding a franchise QB. Only elite QB's can mask a poor O-line and even then they can only do so much.
I do think o-line has been neglected, but right now outside of RT, we are pretty good. DL isn't bad either, though Kyle is long in the tooth.
-
Frustration is recycling cb when it isn't the way to build a winning team. A rookie contract is a lot cheaper than 65 million for five years; like nobody gets that?
Everybody gets that. Would Lattimore be an improvement on Gilmore? Probably. Will it set the team up for short term or long term success? Not really. As Fridge pointed out, we have tried this so many times, it's remarkable folks are still on-board with it.
The Taylor contract is a bridge qb contract. A bridge only makes sense if you have a developmental qb on your team. You don't sign a bridge qb to draft a qb at the end of the contract unless you have a day one starter in the draft. Unlikely Bills are going to get Darnold, folks. Then what?
Draft Mahomes and develop him. You can get a good db later in the draft.
-
Want: Mahomes or Watson
Don't want: Any cb other than Lattimore
Dark horse: John Ross
Think: a cb besides Lattimore
-
we have no 4th to trade
You're not correctly following his train of thought. He traded down in the second to get a late third or fourth.
If we were 11-5 we would lose our minds.
Qb is king, especially if we take last year playoffs into account.
Brady, Ryan, Rogers, Carr, Dak, Big Ben, Russ Wilson.
We will get one eventually
If you draft them, they will come.

He's a great talker. It's a perfect job for Rex.
Don't know how much he'll like all the adulation for the Pats* though.

Seeing this thread immediately had me thinking the worst regarding his past history with cancer. Can you update the vague title?
I concur. No bueno.
-
Great - believe that if you want - I guess. I would believe you if this was your first TT post about this stuff, but considering that I showed how many posts you started about TT (and it has been brought up in this thread also) and not one of them objective and not one of them did you even consider the fact that your own bias could influence what you see or believe. Even in this post - people talk about the fact that there were still a bunch of issues over the middle and you act like you have the definitive research. This is 2 years of this and you were incorrect last offseason and you were shown to be incorrect this offseason. His agent had feelers out to teams and then he "decides" to take a huge pay cut in bot money, guaranteed money, and years, but that was not because he heard his true value - it was because he is a great guy that loves Buffalo.
My mind is made up by what he does on the field and what the coaching staff and GM has stated he needs to improve on both last season and this season. He needs to improve - I am even open to believing that with a new and talented coaching staff - he can improve. I do not think he sucks - as I have stated many time - he was probably the best bet for this team for 2017, but not at the old contract - he just is not ever going to be a long term answer at the position and that is what we need to be successful. With the new contract it is fine and the Bills can move on after this year or next year.
You on the other hand start thread after thread after thread trying to justify why he is a starter and this load of diaper material about his improvements. He is a starter because of his athletic ability and the fact that he took a huge page cut. The rest of the stuff is just filler that you posted to try to make yourself feel better.
You can put the back-up qb in and do the victory formation on this dialogue.

had Gilly been worth what he was seeking, he would have been retained. he wasn't, so he wasn't. pretty simple really.
I understand why OBD let him walk. I'll be less understanding if they spend the #10 pick on cb.
-
Why do you think that Whaley and the McDermott staff were willing to let TT go unless he was willing to accept a substantial pay cut? From the organization's standpoint it certainly wasn't afraid to let him walk unless it's stringent financial conditions were met. Do you really believe that this franchise that hasn't had a legitimate franchise qb for over twenty years wouldn't be more accommodating to a qb that it believed had a long term future? Look at how TT's contract is structured. It is structured in such a way that the organization can walk away after one year with little residual cap repercussions. That doesn't demonstrate much confidence in a long term relationship.
The fastest way for a struggling franchise to make a quantum leap forward is to secure a franchise qb. The Raiders are good example of that point. It was a clown operation that was pervasively mocked until they selected a credible qb that we, by the way, bypassed. Of course the roster needed to be generally upgraded but the most important addition was Derek Carr, the qb.
The argument that the supporting cast has to be upgraded in order to mask the limitations of a qb is an argument in of itself that acknowledges that the qb is limited. How about turning that argument around and find a qb who can take advantage of the assets around him?
I am confident that the Bills are not going to use a high draft pick on a qb this year. That's what they do. And that is why they haven't had a franchise qb in over twenty years and why they have been out of the playoffs for 20 consecutive years (confidently counting the next few years of futility).
There are good qb prospects in this draft. None of them will be ready to play right away. That shouldn't be an excuse for not getting one of them on the roster sooner rather than later. For those people who salivate at the prospect of drafting a DB with our first round pick I want to point out that this woebegone franchise has done that on multiple occasions. They did it with Clements and Gilmore. As soon as their contract was up they let them walk because they weren't willing to pay the going rate for these caliber of players. The cycle of futility continues because the cycle of stupidity continues.
I usually don't quote longish comments, especially when it is two posts above.
This deserves the repeat. I hope, without much confidence, they are open to a qb early this year.

He was here a lot. His youngest child has some issues. The mother is still a student and won't move the kids around.
Thanks for this. Folks go off without knowing any details.

Which of my points was this in response to?
We can make the playoffs with Tyrod. I said that. The quickest route is improve the defense and run the ball well let Tyrod do what he has done the last 2 years.
What I am saying is that I don't necessarily want the quickest route. I want the sustainable route even if it means waiting another year or two and that means finding a franchise Quarterback. So the Bills better start taking QBs.
Yep, but you know what they will probably do? Take a cb to replace the first round cb they just let go.
LOL. Don't like your politics, but that's spot on funny.

So many to choose from.
Changes coming to Bills front office?

You missed my sarcasm. I was summarizing the views of those who don't give much or any credence to the Nix EJ connection. I think Whaley is a reasonably good GM.
