  1. I think the bills will be fine with the wr group they have but this season feels much like the 2019 season setting up for a splash at the position next year. I do think this group has much more depth than we every have had

    2019 WR/TE group:

John brown (averaged 586 yards per season prior)

Cole Beasley (averaged 467 yards per season prior)

Mckenzie (averaged 98 yards per season prior)

    knox (Rookie)

    duke williams (Rookie)

robert foster (541 yards rookie season)

    2020:

diggs (averaged  924 for yards per season prior)

Beasley (averaged 506 for yards per season prior)

brown (averaged  715 for yards per season prior)

mckenzie (averaged 154 for yards per season prior)

    davis (Rookie)

    knox (388 yards rookie season)

    2024:

samuel (averaged  483 for yards per season prior)

shakir (averaged 386 for yards per season prior)

    kincaid (673 rookie season)

knox (averaged  393 for yards per season prior)

    coleman (Rookie)

MVS (averaged 525 for yards per season prior)

claypool (averaged 376 for yards per season prior)

Hollins (averaged 281 for yards per season prior)

#1 target of the last 10 Super Bowl participants:

    Travis Kelce

    Brandon Aiyuk

    Travis Kelce

    AJ Brown

    Cooper Kupp

    Ja'Marr Chase

    Mike Evans

    Travis Kelce

    Travis Kelce

    George Kittle

By the way those teams also all had a #2 passing target that was better than anyone on the Bills roster right now. Several of them had a better #3 passing target.

That's the caliber of talent we're talking about. Meanwhile on this board we're wondering if Khalil Shakir can be the #1. It's honestly a complete joke.

I never expected us to find a #1 caliber pass target right away after trading Diggs. I expected a step back. It is just frustrating that Beane didn't even really try. We added one WR in the draft and then signed a couple low-probability scratch offs in Claypool and Hamler, and the rest has been complementary or depth additions.

We have to hope Kincaid is ready to be a #1 pass target. That's probably our best hope. The next best hope is maybe... Claypool? I don't know. It's just not a good situation and we're likely to enter next offseason with the same questions that we entered this offseason with.

I am truly curious how you define number 1 wr. Is it tds, yards, targets, catches, position, or some combination of that?

If Kincaid has 90 catches is he a number 1?

If shakir has 1100 yards does that make him a number 1?

if Coleman has 10 td is he a number 1? What if he has had 75 catches for 950 yards and 8 tds this year. Do you consider him a number 1 going into next year?

  3. Last year our 4th/5th6th receicers combined for 26 catches for 236 yards.

the combination of Hollins, MVS, and Claypool, Hamler, or Cepheus is light years better than the back end of our roster last year. Any one of those guys could likely beat that number by themselves.

Yes Diggs and Davis are gone but towards the end of last year when we were winning those guys were not helping the team. Knox is back healthy, Kincaid is in year 2, and shakir is an emerging top slot wr

The NFL stands for Not For Long.

    1. Van Pran - 10 year plus career+
    2. Bishop - 10 year career.  Good safeties can easily play into their 30s

    3. Coleman - receivers seem to burn out in their early 30s. 7-8 years

    After those 3, it’s hard a gauge

    4. Carter - it will depend if he can develop into a starter. As a rotational player maybe 5-6 years, although Harrison Phillips is playing good ball since he left.

    5. Davis - He plays out his rookie deal and then maybe plays a year or two elsewhere.  Too much tread already off the tire.

    6. Solomon and Ulofoshio. Odds are they don’t even play out their rookie deals. Ulofoshio is older and Solomon small for his position.

    7.  Hardy. Feels like the Andy Isabella of CBs. Lots of years on practice squads.

    8. The two OTs. They won’t play a down in the NFL.

I think your logic here is pretty good. I think Solomon and Carter are the toughest to predict. The one I disagree in is hardy. I think he is the primary punter returner this year and a depth slot corner. In 2-3 years I could see him taking over the starting role from Johnson as he hits his 30s

  5. I thought it would be interesting to find out to see how everyone would rank who from this draft class will have the best Buffalo bills career. My list is below 1 being the best and 10 the worst.

    1. Bishop

    2. Van Pran Granger

    3. Coleman

    4. Davis

    5. Hardy

    6. Carter

    7. Solomon

    8. Ulofoshio

    9. Grable

    10. Clayton

  6. I think most of the roster is pretty much set but there will certainly be some interesting battles in camp at a few positions:

    Saftey- Lewis vs Hamlin

LB- Jones vs Spector vs Ulofoshio for 2 spots

    DE- Toohill vs Jonathan

Rb- Johnson’s vs Frank Gore Jr

OT- Collins vs Gramble vs Doyle vs Vandermark for 2 spots

    IOL- Anderson vs Clapp

WR- Hamler vs Shorter vs Isabella vs Shavers vs Cepheus for 2 spots

So 205 all purpose yards and 1 TD on 37 combined plays. That's 5.5 yards per touch.

Slightly better than Cook's 5.3 yards per play for the season. Also Cook averaged 1 TD per 49 plays.

So, there no drop off in production, but rather a slight improvement when Johnson got the ball vs Cook.

I like Ty Johnson as I said in my original post and I fully expect him to be RB3 however as you pointed out he only had 37 touches in 10 games. He was also on our practice squad for the first half of the season. I just don’t consider him a lock.

lol, not even close.  It will be 65 Cook/25 Johnson/10 Davis

I don’t know why everyone assumes Johnson is a lock. I think he is going to be in a competion with frank gore jr for the last running back spot. He likely makes it as the 3rd rb but he has always been a journeyman RB and although I liked what he did at the end of last season people act like he accomplished way more than he actually did.

    his stats:

    132 rushing yards, 0 TDs, 1 fumble

    72 receiving yards 1 td

  9. I’m just not seeing how everyone thinks this team is way worse than last year. In my eyes it has the potential to be better.

    QB- same but better depth

RB- I would argue better. Murray ran out of gas last year. You add a rookie with plenty of production and have johnson looked good when he got involved at end of last season.

TE- Same to better. Kincaid year 2 and Knox healthy.

OL- Likely slightly worse. I don’t expect too much of a drop off. Morse is a loss but Torrance will be year 2 and brown coming off his best season.  Depth should be much better.

WR- Worse, there is no debating losing diggs doesn’t make us worse. Worse. We don’t have that true number 1 proven guy but shakir keeps improving and Coleman, Samuel, Hollins is way way better than Davis, Sherfield and harty.

DL- Better. Yes we lost Floyd but you have Von a year removed from injury. Tohill is an upgrade to Shaq and we have a rookie coming in who had 16 sacks last year. I think it’s safe to assume he will be an upgrade over Jonathan who did nothing. At DT jones is back after missing most of last year. The 2 DT free agent signing and the rookie should be a big improvement over settle, phillips, and ford who were not good last year.

LB- Better. Milano is back, Bernard year 2. Young, athletic depth.

CB- I am going with same here. White has been MIA for over 2 years. We get Benford and Johnson back and we now have Douglass for a full year. Yea we lost Dane Jackson but I think getting Douglass for the offseason cancels that out. Will be nice to see Elam get more playtime he showed playmaking flashes when he was out there.

S- slightly worse. Losing poyer and Hyde is tough to replace. They were aging so their impact last season wasn’t what is once was but it’s still going to hurt. I really like Bishop but I just don’t think anyone can say we would be the same or better without those guys this year

Beane is drafting like he has a lifelong contract with the Bills. We have so much need and RB is not one.

how is rb not a need? We have James cook and Ty Johnson who is a journeyman type player. If cook went down you had Ty Johnson and literally nothing else

I hear you. I really do. I understand not drafting for need and picking the BPA. But what we have right now is not an NFL WR corp. They are all WR #3s at best. This is why I hated the idea of trading Diggs and replacing him in the draft because you never know how a draft board will fall and even if you get your guy there are no guarantees that you hit.  The Bills simply cannot go into the year with those as our WRs. They just can't.

Just curious what makes a wr a number 3 in your mind vs a number 1 or 2? Is it stats, size, speed?

I keep seeing people say we have a bunch of number 3 wr and I’m generally curious how they are classifying them.

I know Kincaid is a TE but he will likely have 85-90 catches for 1000 yards if he was a wr would you consider him a number 1?

  12. Personally I think the bills are still fine but they do need to double dip at WR.

The one name that is never brought up on this board but maybe should be more often is Justin Shorter. I personally don’t have much faith that he will be good but Beane and the coaching staff have been around him for a full year now. He wasn’t some undrafted free agent or 7th round pick. He was taken with the 15th pick in the 5th round.

    He is 6’ 4 and 229 lbs and runs a 4.55.

like I said I personally am not expecting much but maybe the bulls have seen enough in practice that they potentially see him as a guy that will get playtime this year. They did invest a decent asset in him

Some of us did not like the 2022 offseason at the time and it has proven to be pretty much an unmitigated disaster:

    Free Agent signings:

    Jordan Phillips - $5m

    Tim Settle - $9m

    Daquan Jones - $14m

    Von Miller - $120m

    Roger Saffold - $6.25m

    Ryan Bates - $17m

    OJ Howard - $3.5m

    Jameson Crowder - $2m

    Extension:

    Stefon Diggs - $96m

    First round pick:

    Kaiir Elam

I know he had some decent success with some of his later picks - Cook, Bernard, Benford - but it is by any standards a bit of a disaster of an offseason.

As far as the draft goes Elam was a major miss but overall I would consider that draft a success getting Cook, Bernard, and Benford, and Shakir.

As for the diggs extension he was producing at a high level and they paid him a market rate. If they would have an he would have walked or moved on then people would be upset they didn’t keep him. Yea it didn’t work out but overall at the time it seemed like a reasonable deal.

Von produced when he came in and looked exactly like the player we wanted. He got hurt that’s not in Beane’s control. Jones was a very good signing and crowder was worth a swing at that price.

Bates was also a fine signing you paid him about 4 million a year to compete as a starter and be a top back up plus got a 5th round pick for him. If you didn’t sign him you were getting nothing for him.

Beane has some hits and misses every year like any GM as others have mentioned. Anyone who thinks ever other gm hits on all their draft picks and free agents doesn’t follow other teams at all. If anything I get Beane’s draft production is better than most in the NFL.

Samuel and Davis are very different players.  Davis was trying to be that Boundary Guy and he really didn't get it done when asked to be that clever route runner over the middle.  Samuel had his best year, with Joe Brady, playing something like 70+% of his snaps from the slot.  I think a more realistic hope is that he'll be the Beasley replacement Crowder and McKenzie were supposed to be.

I really like how Shakir came on last year and how Kincaid looked as a rookie - so smooth!  But I think it's a long stretch to think Kincaid can replace Diggs.

But with all respect, here's the thing: I think this "Jenga Game" with WR where the Bills (not just you) look at WR and argue something like "Davis sure looked All World in the playoffs against the Colts in 2020 and against KC in 2021.  And McKenzie has been stuck behind Beasley on the depth chart, but he seized his opportunity and showed what he could do against NWE and earlier against the Dolphins.   So we don't need to "splash" in FA or in the draft this year.

We project from what guys can do in an occasional game or while the D is focused on someone else.  The Bills seem to do this, too.

It doesn't necessarily work that way, though.

Not saying these guys are 1 to 1 replacements but I think they can replace the production those guys offered. I truly think Brady wants to get away from that 1a type receiver that we force the ball to and gets 160 targets. I could very well see the hall spread all over with maybe no one getting 1000 yards but 3-4 guys all getting around 50-70 catches for 900 yards.

I think people are getting caught up to much on what positioning these guys play (inside/outside) Samuel, Kincaid, and Shakir can line up anywhere. Cook can split out wide and Knox is pretty versatile too. For red zone your have Knox, Kincaid and Hollins who are all big targets.

I think what got us into trouble in the first half of last year was trying to force it to diggs. In the second half when diggs really didn’t look like a number 1 and they were spreading the ball around diggs, Kincaid, and Shakir all had similar numbers

The only number that matters is the score at the end. There are 53 guys that contribute to that. Since you asked here is the oh so important 2023 receiving stats.
    Diggs  107rec  1183yds  8td

    Davis    45rec   746yds  7td

    Kincaid  73rec   673yds  2td

    Shakir    39rec   611yds   2td

    Cook      44rec   445yds  4td

Pick and choose games all you want. The fact is the Bills are weaker on the fire power end of things without Diggs.

Diggs is great no doubt but just looking at this Samuel should be able to put up Davis numbers pretty easily. I think kincaid could end up being close to Diggs numbers last year (maybe 90 catches for 1000). Shakir should be able to replicate Kincaid numbers from last year so you need a rookie to replace shakir’s 39 catches and 600 yards. Not really all that crazy.

Going to struggle this year. Rookie WRs take time and Samuel isn’t a #1

I am not predicting shakir will become a number 1 but once Brady took over he had more production than diggs on less targets. Both are 5th round picks with very similair combine numbers. I could very easily see shakir getting 70-80 catches for 1000-1100 yards with more targets.

Samuel will see a fair share of targets and I expect he will be more productive than Davis was

Kincaid will also see more targets and I think Knox will be utilized more this year now that he is healthy.

The bills offense struggled when we tried to force the ball to diggs. I think they will be much more productive spreading it around and having 4-5 wr in the 50-70 catch range for 700-1000 than 1 guy getting the bill of the targets

  17. It’s super annoying to have to subscribe to a bunch of different services but at the same time it’s $6. You can watch the game then cancel and you still have access for the next 30 days to watch movies and shows.

Once again it’s $6 for 4 hours of entertainment. You can’t do anything for $6, going to a move cost 3x that, going to grab fast food costs 2x that, going out to a bar cost a minimum that.

For years people said let me just buy the games I want to watch and not pay for the nfl ticket. Well here you go this is that

Well they’ll draft 2 guys there. If you’re that concerned about the age of our 5th and 6th DTs (being under 31), advocate for Ankou and our 6th round pick over Williams.

Ankou will be 30 in June so he is also not young. I like the move. DT generally take some time to develop. Draft 1 if he beats this guy out for the 4th spot awesome Williams can be the 5th DT if he doesn’t at least you got a guy with starting experience. Ankou can go on the practice squad again and be available if there are injuries
