  1. I don't think we'd be getting all that excited had we just traded for Chad Henne. going by the numbers, they're not that far off. The one thing I will say that Cassel has going for him is that he has performed adequately on a team that actually has a plan. I will still say that the best shot this team has is with an improved EJ, but I'm not fanboy enough to bet on that scenario. Cassel is a better plan B than Kolb was.

  2. I liked (LOVED) our trade but to say we didn't need him... he is instantly one of the top 5 players on the Eagles. We can always use outstanding FB players. Hear ya.... but I think he would have played well this coming year in Red, White & Blue

really, its not like we traded Mario Haggan's busted ass to them or something. Alonso is an asset.
  3. Our defense was better without Kiko. I love the guy, but he is gone. He was an asset who was traded for one of the top running backs in the game.

It was only better because another pick was invested and panned out (Brown), and Bradham had a huge year of development. And another LB (Spikes) was brought in - he's gone. Let's not act like Kiko was holding the D back. If anything, it could have been even better with him.

  4. OMG! I'm agreeing with WEO.

Kiko was a good player who went from underrated to most overrated in franchise history. Normally if you lose a great player, your team suffers. Our defense got better.

Trent Edwards was the most overrated player in franchise history. Kiko was actually decent.

The defense got better because Bradham came into his own and Preston Brown was a strong addition. It's not like losing Kiko made the team better.

I remain on the fence because of the financials, not because of the players -- Shady is clearly the better one at present.

  5. still could, i suppose. this could be the "in case we miss out on the other FA option" insurance.

Right. I do wonder how much they want to invest in the position. Logistically speaking, I also don't know how the salary cap works if you've got two $5MM / year QBs and intend to cut one before the year opens. Can you carry an "over cap" roster into camp and trim it down by season's beginning, or do you always have to remain under?

One upshot: Bills will be paying Cassel less in 2015 than they would have paid Orton and less than what McCown got with Browns.

While true, they only control him for one year -- same as what would have happened with Orton, of course, unless he would have extended. They could have built in a little more cushion with a FA.

That said, this trade says to me that they hope EJ can win the job, and that if he doesn't, they're going to revisit their options in 2016.

  7. Alonso stopped shining after 5 games. And he was bad against the run.

He might be an awful at OLB but he is coming off a major injury. And as clueless as Rex is about offense, he is a genius in terms of defense.

Oh, I don't think he was a complete player in year one, but he made a lot of game-changing plays and I don't think that can be discounted. That said, you're right, on defense it is in Rex we trust, and I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that.

  8. I don't know how it could even be debated. It addressed an area of need, we have plenty of cap space so its a non-issue there and LeSean McCoy is one of the top RB's in the league. The defense was great without Alonso and will continue to be. Its a rough comparison, but look what Rex's Jets of 2009 and 2010 were able to do. The only negative about this is it basically is the end of Freddy which is tough, but he isn't the same player on the field he was 2-3 years ago. People seem to sweat Whaley but I think he's done a good job drafting and putting together personnel. I still think they should draft a RB if the right one is available in later rounds.

I think it can be debated. Alonso shined in Pettine's defense, which is closer to Rex's than to Schwartz's. He could have been useful. Also, Alonso is worlds cheaper than McCoy. We're paying McCoy a lot wile running back is generally a cheap and expendable position in today's NFL. McCoy has a lot of tread on the tires as well - most carries the past two years, and he is just a couple years short of the timeline where most RBs start to lose their edge.

At the end of the day if we get elite play from McCoy, nothing else matters. But I think it's worthy of debate.

  9. Out of curiosity, if Moore outplayed EJ in camp and pre-season would you still want him to be the back up?

I'd be happy to see them draft someone and have a true competition between him, EJ, and Moore, best man wins.

It wouldn't be anything fancy and it would still leave open the option for looking for something better for 2016. But I think we need to be realistic in our expectations unless some QB equivalent of this McCoy trade comes along.

Sanchez scares me because he will play just well enough before coughing the game up. Locker is EJ with another year of middling play under his belt. The other options are all pretty meh.

  10. I assume I should give the FO the benefit of the doubt, but right now it doesn't make sense to me. I think McCoy could add more this year, but he also brings a huge cap hit and a shorter career span.

    Nailed it.

For me it's about cost-production ratio. The monetary cost + losing Kiko means a lot of resources are invested in McCoy. Conversely, Kiko produces a LOT at a low cost. Now, if he doesn't come back fully from the injury, maybe that's a little bit different.

I don't understand, if they had the money, why they wouldn't throw it at Murray and keep Kiko. This seems at the very least to be a move that could have waited till FA opened, so they could test those waters.

  11.

Yes, but lets flesh it out. If all the QBs are currently backup-quality (and I agree), and we are chasing them / bringing them in, there's only 2 ways to go.

We are bringing them in to backup (so why would they leave their current cushy visor-wearing gigs?), or we are bringing them in to UPGRADE the QB position. Bringing them in to possibly start.

Which in all, suggests that Whaley/Rex dont believe EJ is the "starter" because it doesnt "feel" like they are chasing McCown et al to backup. They think that other teams' backups can start here.

So either you think we are bringing in backups, or we are bringing in potential starters. WHICH IS IT?

My main point is that I think Whaley/Rex are bringing in other teams' backups because they are BETTER than what we have. And yes, they have had time to fully evaluate the QB situation.

I have no idea how one can fully evaluate the situation without having been in any practice or gameday setting with the player. Rex and Roman haven't. You'd have to think he's worthless - i.e. cannot be a backup - to let him go right now. It's asinine considering where this team has found itself with regard to injuries and otherwise.

  12. I also want to point out that if indeed they cut EJ (and again, I have no reason to doubt that Leroi has heard this, and we know his info is sound), his cap hit balloons from $2.4M to $5.25M. I'm surprised that the team thinks so little of EJ that they're willing to take an additional $2.85M cap hit just to release him.

Doesn't mean it's not true; just means I'm surprised at how quickly they've soured on him.

That figure, coupled with the fact that there is nothing better on the roster is precisely why I doubt this.

  13.

No offense intended, but how do you know this? People in St Louis would have said pretty strongly that Warner was toast and he didn't look good for the Giants.

Do you know what went wrong for him? Cuz I think one has to know what was/is wrong to know this for sure?

Warner was definitely dealing with injuries with the Giants. Schaub looks to me to have seriously lost arm strength - which was never his strong suit - and it's compounded by a lack of confidence out there. If I were a betting man, I would not bet on the man.
