1. good info, although in today's NFL players are expected to contribute more, sooner.  i think marv would have a tough time, as he's still used to the "old school" way of building a roster.  nowadays, if you wait 3 years to get a significant contribution out of a player, all you're doing is developing him for someone else's roster.

i think the bills' scouts did a great job w/ the UDFAs, from what i've read.  i won't be surprised if a couple of these guys (gause, leonhard, gudmundsen) make the final roster.

Lothar, insightful post. I agree, the Bills have done a good job locating and signing UDFA's, but keep in mind, the Bills have only had 12 draft picks in the past two years, two on defense. Since the average team has 8+ picks every year, the Bills have

    1. more need for UDFA's

    2. more opportunity to offer them.

Gause wasn't a great find - everyone knew he was out there, and he even got offers - I think the story said Baltimore and Philly gave him contracts (sorry, forgot link location), but they both took DL's on the first day. Gause knew that and knew he only has to beat out Constantin Ritzmann, himself a UDFA, to make the roster. Once we build more depth and acquire more draft picks (I think we'll get one next year for Henry and comps for Jonas and Big Pat), expect the UDFA's making the team to decline.

  2. After the upcoming season

From my understanding the reason would be that if the Bills franchise Clements then sign him to a long term deal they would not be able to use the franchise tag  again on another player for the life of the Clements contract.

The Bills would likely want to franchise McGahee 3 years from now.

If the Bills transition Clements then they could match any offer he receives from any other team & still Franchise Mcgahee in 3 years.

Unless the Bills decide to franchise & Clements & trade him or franchise him & keep him for 1 season I think the Bills would more likely transition tag him.

Didn't the Bills sign McGahee to a 4-year-deal? Anyone have contract details?

  3. What is your problem with TD.  I read you constantly complaining about his performance as GM.

Please remember that when TD took over the Bills were capped out and personnel deficient.  This roster has been rid of cap mismanagement issues, rebuilt with excellents players on offense, defense and made the moves to make the special teams, once a laughing stock into the best in football.

Plus, the Bledsoe move generated fan excitement and put butts in the seat and generated more revenue flow.

So, it would be great if you simply shut-up and stop you complaining.

The way I remember it, Butler's team was 8-8 the year he got canned, and that was only because half the defense (Cowart, Rogers, Carpenter, Winfield) went down with injuries in a game at Tampa Bay, when we were 7-4. The year before, we were 11-5, our best record in the decade since the Superbowl years, and a forward lateral away from a serious Superbowl run. We were in a bad cap situation, but Butler had dealt with worse.

And for the next person who asks why someone doesn't like TD, it's this simple. Four years, no playoffs. I could've and you could've and everyone else on TSW could've done just as well, even better. I'm not saying he won't make it this year, and I have hogh hopes for this year's team, but Donahoe's leash is getting shorter all the time.

  4. The TD bashers are people that only understand instant gratification- something that usually hurts you long term, but these people dont understand what the words LONG TERM mean!!! Hopefully they apply to Donahoe's stay w/the Bills!!!

    317915

Oh, silly Adam. Four years without playoffs, that's what I call long term. And that's also why I'm a proud Donahoe basher. The botched Henry trade is just a drop in the bucket.

  5. Is it possible you're all viewing this completely wrong? There have been numerous posts saying that Henry is worth more than a 4th - look at Feeley and Lamont Gordon - then why couldn't Donahoe get more, if he's so shrewd? Forget Donahoe's ego and all that, a decent GM would've pulled off the trade because he knows how to market players, not just stick to his word. And for those who trust in Donahoe, when are we going to make the playoffs?

  6. Why would we trade into the first round when everyone is trying to get out?

I'm not that big on targeting on specific guy and selling the farm for him. More often than not that backfires.

Supply and demand. if everyone is looking to get out, it's cheaper to get in.

But I agree with your second point. The one player I can think of the TD traded up to get was Ryan Denney, not a great success.

  7. Hey Mark,

This is only if you have a lot of time, but how many players does Ourlands rate as 1st rouders? 2nd rounders? 3rd rounders? Are they one of the publications that give 50 players 1st round grades when only 32 could possibly earn them? Or are there 32 1st rounders (not necessarily whom they believe will be drafted in the first round though, due to need considerations)?

  8. I went to the Amerks game at HSBC Arena last weekend.  Miller played a very inconsistent game...great saves mixed with a very weak goal that gave the Leafs a brief 3rd period lead (Vanek eventually scored two late goals to give Rochester the win).

It looks like Miller, and the rest of the team, may be tiring down the stretch...

    What is an Amerk?

  9. Jones' measurables are nice but the guy needs to learn to become a receiver. I suspect he'll be taken in the early part of Round 4 by a team like Chicago who is desperate for WR and/or TE help. Personally I don't see him making an impact until his 3rd year in the league if he puts in a strong effort to play WR or TE in the NFL. As a rookie I'd see him as a Butch Rolle type at best.

You mean just when we'll need someone to step in for Moulds?

  10. You have to realize... the media...and guys like Mark Gaughn feel a need to always be right and make themselves look good... at the expense of other folks...

case in point, a quote from his article....

True... but the way he writes it ..."gave it away last year to acquire quarterback J.P. Losman", although true, implies that the Bills may be a little hap hazzard in how they acquire peronnel...

If Gaughn could leave his feelings and emotion out of this, he might have found that a more accurate way to state this is...

lhe Bills will not be making a pick in the first-round of the April 23 NFL draft because they elected to select their 2005 1st round pick last year to select quarterback J.P. Losman".  This is, in effect, what they did... they gave up a #2 and #4 in the process..

Gaughn is not alone... he's just another example of lazy bastard journalists who only like to pur their spin and stojan in print.  if he wasn't so godamn lazy, he would research a topic  thoroughly and report the facts... but, I guess after all... it is an editorial and its his opinion...  so what, he till took the easy way out!!

    294795

Aren't you being a bit harsh? You accuse him of not researching the facts, but the only fault you find is poor word choice. This is exactly the kind of story you'd hope the Mrs. reads to have an idea what's happening in the upcoming football season. As someone who works for a major newspaper in one of the nation's largest, most competitive markets, it makes perfect sense to me.

  11. Who would waste a second round pick on a friggin kicker? That's crazy. I can't think of any highly drafted kicker besides Janukowski who actually worked out well for the team that drafted him.

The need is obviously o-line. Unless there is a tremendous run on guards and centers in the first round, we should be picking there. Either that or a cornerback. Knowing TD, he'll probably draft a QB and end up looking smart.

    RTB

    288381

I can't think of another kicker drafted that high besides Janikowski, at least in the last decade. Plus, isn't there spposed to be enough guard depth to snatch one in the third rond?
