  1. you are so right - I grew up in Buffalo and have lived in a detroit suburb since I went to U of M in ann arbor in 1990. these people think detroit is rosy but in buffalo there is more snow and beer is onlu $12 for a 30 pack (consumers beverages) vs here it is $18 plus they play football here in a dome like a bunch of wussbags - I go home every year for a december game in the snow - you should listen to a wings game and hear them whine about having only a $75million payroll when the sabres is $27million and the next day the tigers broadcast whines about Yankees having a $200million payroll buying all the best players - bunch of maroons no doubt

Yeah, I went to UM, too. I can tell you from experience that the only reason anyone goes to Detroit is when there's a football, baseball, or hockey game going on. They probably think it's hot stuff because everytime they've been there, there's been football, so logically...

  2. Engineers took a look at the roof Saturday and estimated the outside portion alone will take about $50 million. Add that to what it will take to put in new turf, replace at least half the seats, get the smell out of there, and fix all the water damage, which is quite substantial, and you are talking about way more money than New Orleans residents will be willing to pay. Remember, the team is only still there (pre-Katrina) because the city and state kicked in a ton of cash. Now, the state and city have a whole lot of more important things to pay for.

I spoke with several N.O. residents and they said there has been a strong movement for a while to get rid of the Superdome anyway.

But aren't stadiums usually insured for something like this?

  3. Sorry if posted.  I was watching Cold Pizza and ESPN was reporting that there are meeting being held this week to KEEP the team in San Antonio.

Id hate to see it.  Would just further kill the hearts of their die hard fans going through loss right now.  But NFL does not care about the people who buy tickets.  On the other end.  I dont see that city ever returning to normal.

Maybe the wrong time to post this, but the Saints aren't exactly known for their die-hard fans. They're more known for fans whjo wear bags over their heads. They'd be crushed if anything happened to their beloved LSU Tigers.

Just asking, what does the name Saints have to do with NO? And what does hornets have to do with Charlotte?

  4. I know soe people are being tongue-in-cheek in this post, but the sad truth is that pre-hurricane, the situation for the hundreds of thousands of poor, nearly all-black people of New Orleans was as bad if not worse than those in Detroit, and the Mardi Gras-celebration side of the city just masked that. At least Detroit has some Fortune 500 companies to speak of.

  5. I found it curious that Jones used the example of Paul Brown Stadium and naming rights to demonstrate that not all owners try to maximize revenue. Don't they play in plain old Texas Stadium, or did I miss a corporate renaming?

One thing that should be noted, though, is that Jones and the other big-market owners are just fighting for the status quo, not to take money away from small markets. And I do like some version of McNair's (the guy in Houston) plan, where building a new stadium, which boosts league revenue, can be deducted from their revenue sharing pool. I think baseball already has this system.

  6. I think when cuts are made his number will get changed.  I think the league only lets receivers wear numbers that low during preseason because there aren't enough numbers available in the normal WR range and there are extra numbers available down in the QB range.

I think Keyshawn was 19. Does the NFL have rules on numbers?

  7. The cheapest ticket for a "Gold" game is $40. That's still too much for the average fan. The cheapest for a "Value" game is $17. That's probably against a team like Carolina or Florida on a Monday night in November. What the Sabres are basically saying is that if you have money, you can see a good matchup. If you don't have money, you can still see a game but don't expect much. Real nice. What a great way to bring back the fans. The Sabres average ticket price should be $30 to cover a $24 million payroll. It's not about the fans and it's never been about the fans. It's about making money. They are all full of crap when they say it's about bringing the fans back.

How is it that someone can go see a Bills-Patriots game or a Bills-Dolphins game for less than it costs to see a Sabres-Leafs game?

And why is it that you go to work every day?

  8. I just graduated Michigan. Living in Ypsi is a good idea if you have a car. If you want to stay within walking distance, look claser to Main St. or further down State St. Basically, the farther from campus, the cheaper it will be. Oh, and don't look southeast of campus. It's ridiculously expensive.

  9. The point really is:  Who knows?  We sure don't.  Personally, I hope you're dead wrong.  :)

Had a similiar conversation with a crackwagon fan yesterday who was waxing ad nauseum about some publication rating the Cowboys as having the best draft.  I told him to talk to me about it in three years when the real results are actually known.  Of course, he didn't actually know Vinny wasn't going to be the starter, either.

Hey, Kiper, the hair of ESPN, was the only one who liked the Parrish pick at the time, calling it a steal. Why should he retract now?

  10. Actually the whole TO trade situation was complicated. TO's contract with San Francisco had reached its end, allowing him to become a free agent. TO wanted to go to Philly. Except that his agent didn't file the paperwork for free agency on time, so San Fran traded him to Baltimore. It turned out, however, that there was a clause in TO's contract which stipulated a later deadline for the paperwork to be filed by. TO's agent did meet this later deadline, so according to that clause, TO could become a free agent after all, and go to Philly. The whole situation went to arbitration, involving the claims of Philly, Baltimore, San Fran, and TO. They reached a compromise, with Philly getting the rights to TO. In exchange, Philly had to send a second rounder to San Fran, and a fifth to Baltimore.

Yes, but remember when the thinking was that Owens was available for a trade? What was the highest offer then? A second by Baltimore, I think. Definitely not two firsts, though.

  11. TO is worth 2 1st round picks.

Simon is worth 1 1st round pick.

    thats 3 1st rounders.

henry, is worth a 2nd (IMO)

moulds is worth maybe a 3rd, (based on age and years remaining)

    our 2nd is a 2nd.

so does two 2nd rounders and a 3rd rounder = three 1st rounders????

    no

    duh...

    336081[/snapback]

Wasn't TO traded for a 5th last year? So, a first and a fifth for two seconds and a third? Yes. And before you argue worth, there's no better proof than what actually happened. I kinda like this idea. TO may have a big mouth, but he never takes plays off, ala Deion Sanders or Donovan McNabb.

  12. Is America really that trustworthy at this point? We did invade because of WMD's that didn't exist. I could see some Iraqi people not trusting American statements that they're there to liberate and not to get oil.

And before we get into a spitting contest, Joe, let me say that it's worthwhile to try to understand what the Iraqi people are thinking without necessarily agreeing with them, and it can't hurt to understand.

  13. Because they see the Iraqi police force and government as pawns of the American occupiers and traitors to the concept of Iraqi independence. They don't trust American promises to leave the country once an Iraqi security force is established. They see them as scabs crossing the picket lines.

  14. Hey guys,

Just hunting for a little free advice. Since I'm going to be living in NYC this fall near my dad, I want to get us Bills season tickets. I was wondering what other expenses go along with the tickets, i.e. compulsory preseaon tickets, or is it straight-up ticket prices. Anyone subscribers out there know? Also, where do you recommend buying tickets? I've been to the stadium about a half a dozen times before, all in the upper deck or end zone 200-level, but I'm wondering what you think is the best value. Also, since we probably won't be able to drive up for all the games, maybe just five or six, which tickets are the easiest to resell? Thanks for the help. My dad has been waiting 45 years to get this season ticket, so I want to make this work for him.
