  1. I think saying ANY rookie sucks, based on his rookie year, is a premature judgment. Plenty of rookies haven't panned out right away, but later turned out to be OK, I admit, Kujo has been a giant disappointment, though. But you said two out of the three rookie OLs sucked. And so far Richardson hasn't looked great, but he was a 5th rounder. Just saying keep it in perspective.

Yes fair. But asking for perspective on a message board may be wishful thinking!

  2. Isn't it a bit early to conclude these rookies suck? They are rookies, after all. Kujo certainly didn't perform to expectations. OTOH, I'd say Richardson performed about the way you would expect a 5th round rookie to perform on an otherwise weak offensive line. Dunno if he will pan out, but I'm not one to write off guys in their first year. Perhaps you are.

Richardson played poorly. He is not good but he is a rookie. You should expect your picks in rounds 1-3 to start or factor heavily in a rotation. The fact the we spent a 2nd rd pick on a guy who is consistently a healthy scratch and can't even get on the active roster as a backup means he's awful. We have the worst starting Guards in the league, you mean to tell me our second rounder can't outperform these scrubs in practice? Cause if he can't, then yes he sucks.

  3. Usually by now I've put a bunch of time in looking through college prospects and trying to get excited about the upcoming year. I have not looked at a single thing this year. Barring a shakeup in the FO or coaching staff, I probably will skip the draft and offseason stuff for the first time ever. This coaching staff is incompetent and Cujo as our 2nd rd bust pick just shows me how poor our talent evaluation is.

  4. How would you suggest scheming around an OL that can't open running lanes and can't pass block? I think that they've tried getting the ball out of Orton's hands quickly, but folks complain that they "never go deep". Unfortunately, the OL hasn't held up in pass protection long enough to go deep. I think that they've tried screens, but OL blocking for the WR/RB on those has been poor. They've tried running the ball inside and wide, both without a lot of effectiveness.

The poor pass protection means that opposing DBs can play tight to the line not needing to fear getting beat deep. This also further clogs running lanes for a team that can't create holes to begin with.

Offensive scheming requires at least *some* kind of strength to play to.

I really think that they knew that they needed OL help last offseason. Unfortunately, either Kuandjo and Richardson are not yet ready or they misfired on those picks. I give them credit that they knew what needed help, but the reinforcements didn't work out. After watching Cyril Richardson be abused during Senior Bowl practices, it isn't surprising that he wasn't a help this year. Kuandjo was a bigger let down. I know that I thought that he would help when they drafted him, but the preseason showed that he couldn't play at the NFL level - at least not yet.

Just wrong. There is plenty you can do to cover for a weak line. You can run bubble screens, you can throw quick crossing routes, you can chip with TE's and HBs on passing plays. You want to see how NOT to draw up a passing scheme? Watch how your boy Hackett left Henderson alone out on an island with Tuck ALL day in Oakland and made no adjustments to help his rookie RT while he was getting taken to the woodshed. How can you not draw up a blocking scheme all season that allows us to run the ball efficiently. I'm serious, watch the playacting and see how most of our running plays are the exact same play. The offense is TERRIBLE: we can't run and we can't pass. OC NEEDS to go.

We drafted 3 O-linemen and 2 of them absolutely suck. That's poor talent scouting there.

  5. So many games this year the Bills D dominated the first half and presented the offense with great field position over and over(KC and Houston for example). A good QB would put those games a way with 3 or 4 first half TDs. But instead we get FG's(Carpenter offensive MVP) and turnovers. I know Houston was on EJ, but we have been lacking that knockout punch from our QB

Dude not even lacking just the KO punch. Orson KILLS drives by taking sacks unnecessarily. We had an INT IN FG range and he took us out of it singlehandedly. He's captain check-down with terrible pocket presence.

  6. Forget the hard time beating elite QBs argument: our games vs KC and Miami make me worry we can't beat a decent team who can put up more than 17 points on us. Seriously, a TD in each half and a random FG shouldn't be asking a lot of an offense and we haven't even been able to put these numbers up in several very winnable games. Those two losses likely keep us out of the playoffs.

  7. I truly hope the Bills defense does replicate what the Rams and Seahawks were able to do. However, the Bills defense has played two upper tier QBs this year: Tom Brady and Phillip Rivers. They went a combined 45-62 (72%) for 617 yards, 6 TDs, no interceptions, and a QB rating of over 135. We lost those games by a combined score of 59-32...and both games were at home. I don't say this to be negative or to say that there is no way the Bills can beat Denver. My point is that great QBs typically make plays and that tremendous defensive performances against them, such as the ones cited, are rare.

I believe the key for the Bills to beat a team with an upper tier QB is for their offense to step up its game and help the defense by playing consistent, putting together time consuming drives, scoring touchdowns in the red zone, and not turning the ball over. If they do that, then the defense does not have to have one of those rare performances - just a very solid one. This defense is very, very good. But, to beat a team like Denver (not to mention Green Bay and New England), then the offense is going to have to play far better than they did earlier this year against San Diego and New England.

Agreed, we've been pretty poor against good competition

  8. What special insight would Schwartz have that other divisional DCs didn't have? He just had better players, just like he does now. He has no magic...

The Seahawks had never played Manning under Pete Carroll, yet they were able to figure out how to ruin Manning pretty quickly.

This seems shortsighted. Obviously familiarity and a measure of success show you how someone reacts in different situations. Where does the OP say Schwartz is better situated to understand Manning than anyone else? Cause I don't see it.
