OT- Why launch the shuttle on the 13th??
TheMadCap replied to buffalo mike's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well, I think that some of the CAIB recommendations are impossible to implement. For example recommendation R3.2-1, is to "Initiate an aggressive program to eliminate all External Tank Thermal Protection System debris-shedding at the source with particular emphasis on the region where the bipod struts attach to the External Tank"... Of course it will always be inherently dangerous for manned space flight. Which is why until they have a clear, worthwhile mission to undertake, they shouldn't be taking the risks. Especially not on a design that is outdated, and fundementally flawed to begin with... -

NASA hasn't even finished upgrading the items that the CAIB recommended yet. In fact, they probably never will since it would cost too much and would be nearly impossible to prevent all the foam from comming off the tank. That POS has loooong outlived its usefulness... -

I'd prefer you over O'keefe any day of the week. By the way, what is your opinion of R. Zubrin's plan? Other that the obvious, that it is not redundant enough...

Moon-based Cape Canaveral launch proposals are a waste of time, if your goal is to reach Mars, which in my opinion, is the only worthwhile endeavor for NASA's manned space program. Any rocket that you launch to Mars from the Moon has to come from Earth first, so send it there directly. You would save fuel that way. The other main problem is that the moon does not have the significant atmosphere necessary to use an aerobraking maneuvor. You can also forget about parachute decent as is done currently on Mars. You could, I suppose, use a lunar base as a training facility, but why? We can do it on Earth as substaintialy reduced cost....

I've actually heard alot about this type of thing lately, not too farfeched of an idea actually. If you already don't know about it, check some of these topics on this forum Tom, I think you would enjoy it.. http://www.newmars.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi

There isn't really anything on the moon that we can't get on Earth for much, much cheaper. I think the cost of setting up a mine or something there would take it years to get the money back out of. One of the main points of the Mars Direct plan, which I tend to agree with, is that if you are going to go ahead and get out of Earth's gravity, then go ahead and go to Mars, there doesn't need to be another stop off at the moon. You are correct, it would be easier to get back off the moon than Earth, but why not just go the whole way while you have the rocket up there already?

Tom, I set em up, you knock em down. Couldn't have said it better myself. You are exactly right about this. The sad part is that NASA used those two programs to justify themselves and thier big time budget. No shuttle, no ISS, no big $$$$... What irks me most about NASA's view about the future of man spaced flight is that they want to go to the moon before Mars. Why? Can anyone give me a good reason why we should waste our time on the moon. We've been there and already seen there is NOTHING there that would make it economically worthwhile. And all the projections I have seen for a manned Mars mission include a huge Battlestar Galactica class vessel, taking all fuel for the return trip with them. I would like to see them offer to use the Mars Semi-direct approach myself, but that would mean less budget money for them...

I'd like to see NASA cut the worthless flying death trap program (aka the shuttle) and the even more worthless ISS and use the difference to fund more unmanned probes, which they have a better sucess rate at anyways. The shuttle is necessary for the ISS and vice versa. They are useless...

While I agree that Roger Water's MENTAL state really began to spiral out of control around the time of the Wall, that was in no way the beginning of any bad feelings between the band members. Go and watch some of the studio footage from the sessions for Dark Side of the Moon and you will see they were at each other's throats even then! One lasting image in that vein was when David was trying to do the solo for Eclipse, and Roger keeps stopping the track to yell at him for allegedly missing notes. Sounded fine to me. P.S. You can see the said footage on the Live at Pompeii video... -
Gooooood luck with all that pal. He'll be lucky if the judge doesn't fall off his chair laughing....

I believe that NASA plans on a relaunch of it's flying death trap in the comming months...

Unfortunately, I agree with you. Pink Floyd has proven that they don't need Roger Waters to sell out stadiums. They are fine without him, however much you and I want it to happen. I also agree that the coverage by both VH1 and MTV were the absolute worst thing I have ever had to watch. I was at my girlfriend's parent's house and they only have dialup, which made internet impossible for me. A typical segment would be for the peanut gallery to talk to someone in the crowd (oh boy, let's get the 15 year old perspective), then show a thirty second clip of a band, and cut away. They also did a fair amount of showing the stage for the last 12 seconds of each act's performance. Pitifull....
