Plus Oats now has a strong emotional tie to the Buffalo community as well, shorty after Oats took the job with UB his wife, Crystal, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.  She underwent a bone marrow transplant and six rounds of chemotherapy at Roswell.

Here is a possibly telling answer to an interview question last year about his immediate future with UB:

Did your wife’s battle with cancer affect your career and outlook on life?

Crystal was diagnosed with double hit lymphoma in the fall of 2015. It changed my perspective on many things. For much of my career, I’ve spent way too much time only on basketball, sometimes to the detriment of my relationship with my wife and family. When you’re staring death in the face, you start to evaluate what is really important in your life. And then you try to make adjustments.

The time I give my family is a whole lot more balanced now than it was three years ago. You can always watch another game tape, but at the end of the day, you’re going to win and lose games based on how your players play. It’s better to realize the importance of balance without a wake-up call, but sometimes you need it.

Maybe coaching at a smaller school affords him more time with family?  They also recently moved into a beautiful house on Grand Island.  And have 3 daughters who love living on GI.

"Crystal found her dream house," Oats said. "It's an unbelievable property. There's not much more that we'd want in a house than we got in this one."

They looked in Clarence, Williamsville and Amherst, but his kids wanted to stay on Grand Island, where they go to school. And when "this house popped up on the market, Crystal said it had everything we wanted," he said.

"After everything Crystal's been through these last few years, I was really happy she was able to find a dream house, and we could check just about every box we had," he said. "It's old, but we love old houses because they have character, with the original woodwork and all that. We're going to do a few things to kind of make it ours."

In the end, all this might not mean much as he could get an offer he just can't refuse.  But at least it's going to be a really difficult decision...

    GO UB!!!!

Anyone thinking about going to the MAC tournament in Cleveland?  I have wanted to go the best several years, but I think this may be the year I go.  Horns up!

    Refs were fine this game

The holding call on the Rams center was bad, negated a big play.  And no one would have said a word if the defenseless receiver flag wasn't thrown on NRC, maybe the right call by the letter of the law, but in reality a good football play.  Other than that, nothing worth noting...

Currently travelling well, though insomnia has kept me up tonite, find out test results tomorrow. Chemo not fun. Have been pretty positive, have had some slumps, lots of fatigue- way more than I ever thought. Any good news stories, some positives. Cheers.

Good Luck!  My Mother-in-law was diagnosed in late November.  They still have not been able to identify where it originated as it has spread throughout her body (although they believe it might be the lungs) , they have not identified the type or stage either.  It's been frustrating not knowing any details after almost 2 months.  She started a generic chemo a couple Friday's ago and has treatment scheduled for a spot on the brain this week.

I'd agree if they were unranked or had a crappy RPI.  This UB team already has several quality wins and if they only lose one in conference play they'll still be ranked.

I have no doubt they'll be a 5 or 6 seed in the NCAA tourney.

It's been 20 years, if there is a team that can break the drought, it should be this one.  But let's just hope they win the tourney...;)

Dating to 2000, the MAC has had 10 teams finish with an RPI ranking in the top 60 and not receive an at-large bid. Five of those teams were rated no worse than 46 — Kent State was 36th in 2000, Miami was 40th in 2005, Buffalo was 46th in 2005, Toledo was 36th in 2014, and Akron was 34th in 2016.

That was certainly a "statement" win by UB last night.

I'm not being glib -- will they lose again before the NCAA tourney?  I don't see anyone in the MAC truly challenging them.

Should they?   No.  They are by far the best team in the conference.  Will they?   I think they will.   When they struggle, they really struggle.  They will get some ugly wins, but I think they'll have at least have one bad loss.  Plus everyone will be gunning for them.  I just hope it doesn't come the tournament, I have no faith in the NCAA handing out an at large bid to a MAC team.

TT is all about Buffalo, great ambassador for the city.  Although he only goes to a handful of games, I'm pretty sure he has season tickets for the Sabres as well.

As for UB....WOW!  That was a statement to the MAC, get ready.  If this team is clicking, they can beat anyone.  Harris is a big key, he has struggled to start the season, nice to see him come up big.

Not trying to argue but their actions have been the opposite of everything you said so far in my opinion. This move reeks of desperation. I think this guy will be long gone before they get to training camp.

No argument here, I never mentioned anything about the move just the "good character" BS some believe "the process" is all about.

    The Kodi craze has peaked

For TV and movies, look at Titanium TV.

    For live sports, Reddit

Sanctuary is the only add-on I know of that still has plenty of feeds on Kodi.  Watching Ray Donovan currently with no issues.  But Tea TV and Titanium have many more users now, so better to go through one of those sites for content.

Does not seem to have McBeane type of character either.

Why do most think McDermott and Beane are looking for choir boys?  They don't care if guys have had trouble in the past, they are not just looking for "high character" Marv Levy guys, they are looking for team players.  If they think he will mesh in the locker room, they will give him a chance.  That doesn't mean they won't drop him off like a bad habit if he gets in trouble off the field, but "The process" is not about putting together a team of "good guys", it's about putting together a team.

A big reason for this is that elite schools recruit one-and-done players, while mid-majors develop four-year players. UB has a deep bench but most of them have been in the program a long time. Syracuse gets great players but they are gone sooner if they are NBA-caliber.

UB's hitting the juco's hard as well, a couple big contributors on the current roster.  Also have 2 pretty good players, sitting out this year due to transfer, that will come in as seniors next season.

    http://www.ubbulls.com/sports/mbkb/2018-19/releases/20180705mj3f8n

Oats and his staff have been fantastic at finding quality transfers to this point.

  11. “I thought they were tougher than us the last 10 minutes, especially.”

    “They’re faster, quicker, I think they’re stronger.”

    -Jim Boeheim

It’s a huge win for our program,” said UB coach Nate Oats. “We’ve got a little bit more depth, we’ve got a little bit more scoring – 1 through 7 – than they do.”

“No disrespect to their guys, but I think we do have better players,” said Oats, in his typical blunt, matter-of-fact fashion. “I told our team that. I told them going into this game, we’re the better team. I think we play harder. I think they’ve got a couple guys who are borderline pros. (Oshae) Brissett, obviously, is supposed to go in the first round after this year. (Tyus) Battle is really good. If you look at players 3 through 9, I think we’re better.”

“They play a small lineup but they rebound well out of it,” Boeheim said. “They’re older. Their defense is better this year by a lot. We scored 80 points against them last year.”

“I thought our defense and rebounding won the game,” Oats said. “We kind of won despite coaching, because I can never figure that zone out. We were awful against it. But to outrebound them by 13, and our defense the last 10 minutes of the game really locked them up.”

  12. Don't see anything wrong with what he said:

I’ve got to be smarter with the football,” Allen said. “I gave it away three times and I didn’t put us in great situations and great position. Coach (Sean) McDermott preaches ball security all the time, and there were a couple of plays where it just wasn’t the most important thing and it hurt us.”

He's not saying ball security is not important to him, he is saying his decision on a couple plays made it look as though it wasn't.  He is basically saying ball security is crucial and he made 3 really bad mistakes.

  13. The Hockey Fights Cancer night is such an emotional night.  I'll give credit to Marty and Duff for holding it together for the most part during their segments, especially the post game...

I was watching the NHL network and they showed the Risto goal with a pip of the guys watching live in studio and it was amazing.  The reaction was classic, have to see if I can find it.

Exciting game, exciting team, just fun to watch...House is rocking..As Shrader said, sit back and enjoy!

You missed the point of my original post. I simply made the point that I believed that they were ranked higher than they should be. I consider Columbus and Washington better teams. I'm not denigrating the Sabres or dismissing their current success. It's exciting and fun to watch. But I don't believe that they are better than Washington and Columbus. If you do then that's fine.

Trust me, I get the point.  I see more of the "pump the breaks" stuff regarding the Bills, strange as that may sound, but I get the point.  In a 7 game series against Washington or Columbus, they would most likely come up short.  But that's why ranking systems aren't anything to pay attention to,  they go by stats and record and not experience and grit.
