So ... our actions do belie our values and our environment can influence our moral development. Then why do you (Jim) seem to declare that no one should worry about the actions of a professional (and some would say 'model' over the last decade) franchise? If you're simply saying that it hasn't impacted your moral development ... fine. Say that. I work with teens on a daily basis and see the effect that large & small segments of popular culture has many, if not all, of the kids I see. It is incorrect to make a blanket statement to say that no one's moral development can be harmed by cheating -- and cheat is what the Pats did (however small of an infraction you may see it as).
-
So ... we can agree to disagree. I believe that my morality is revealed through what I do & that my environment can help or hurt my moral development ... and others (some in this thread?) believe that our decisions are independent of our true values and are based in a moral vacuum -- not influenced by what we see or hear ...
Do I have that right?

Comparing this non-issue to the baseball steroid scandal is a pretty wide stretch. A large degree of the outcry caused by steroid use in baseball is due to the very statistical nature of the game. Purists hold sacred the hallowed numbers in the record books, and no other sport enjoys that almost reverent statistical condition.
I suppose the Patriots "cheating" would be akin to Derek Jeter taking first base after pretending that he got hit when he really didn't. Pressing a competitive advantage, with an uncertain degree of ethicalness.
While they violated the NFL policies with regard to video taping, the reason that they own the Bills year after year after year after year is because of better players, better coaching, and better execution. To suggest otherwise is a crybaby excuse, and just utterly reeks of jealousy and desperation.
I hate the Patriots, but I'm just calling it like it is to any outside observer except the bitter, butthurt Bills fan.
No they haven't. Nobody cares about this today, except for a small population of sore losers. Nobody will remember it in 20 years.
Funny thing about image ... is that it is relative to the sight of the one making the comment ... I should have added that it has tarnished it in my mind (but didn't think that to be necessary). I also concur that they have beat us, not by cheating, but by having superior players, coaching, etc. and at times us beating ourselves when their team stumbled (see last year). Has their cheating enhanced the matchups through the years? Maybe, possibly, probably ... we'll never know ... that's the other side of dishonesty ... you never know what you are getting. Is it the real deal? It is cheating? We don't know. In raising kids, dishonesty is the worst sin a child can commit against one's parents ... trust can be shattered (especially when it is a pattern of dishonesty) and take years to restore ... if ever.

You missed my point. I brought it up? Look at any post on here where the Pats are mentioned. Always the Pats*, Belicheat, etc. So now it's HGH? All lame excuses.
Face it. The Pats*[there, happy] owned the Bills in the 2000s, as the Bills owned Miami in the 90s, and Miami owned the Bills in the 70s. Better players, better organization? Hell no they where all on drugs and dealt from the bottom of the deck! The Bills could have won two Super Bowls if the Pats played by the rules! Really the whining on here over trivial incidents is embarrassing.
To a large extent, the Pats didn't need to cheat to beat Buffalo the last 10 years. They beat us ... we beat us. I don't blame the losing streak against the Patsies on their cheating ... but they have forever tarnished their image b/c they thumbed their noses at the authorities of the league. I remember most of the 70s ... I hate the Dolphins, but I respect that team that beat us 20 straight times. The Patsies are much of what I don't want my kids to be in growing up. This goes back to some of my most recent posts that I got hammered for. This is a sad commentary on our culture ... we are all about selfishness. Common courtesy is not all that common. Common courtesy plays by the rules because it is right. Our culture of selfishness finds any and all loopholes to jump through and then cheats as much as possible without getting caught.

Yet the best blitz pick up was done by Spiller. A GB LB tried to jump him, expecting Spiller simply cut-block. Spiller held his ground and gave TE the time he needed. Unfortunately Matthews blew thru the middle on that play for one of his three sacks ... but Spiller did his job
Spiller probably sat because he's a rookie facing a huge rush. Rookie RBs generally can't pick up a blitz or a rushing linebacker to save their lives, and so my guess is they sat him for more experienced backs that had a chance of blocking. If that is the case I understand the reasoning, but I think maybe he should have seen the field a bit more.
The other problem is that if you read the board here, fans are in no mood to be patient with a rookie RB. He's going to make mistakes, he's going to miss blocks, and he's going to dance around before hitting a hole because it worked for him in college. Like the rest of the team while the Bills are rebuilding, it will take time for him. But it seems as if idiot fans don't realize that, and are impatient.
The fact is fans MUST be patient with a new coach, new schemes, new GM, etc. As bad as the Bills have drafted over the past 10 years, we're going to have to go through this before it gets better. If you are a kitty and can't hack it, I suggest you stop watching for a year or two.

Again, I am beyond belief that being unselfish is something to be criticized.
Give me a break.
I love the idiots. I love the drunks. I love the passion. I love all of it. I have a kid and I'm always respectful and I still love it all. And all stadiums are the same.
If you want to raise your kids in a nice safe antiseptic bubble then keep them home. Or better yet, take them to see a high school football game and save a boatload of money and actually give them an experience they will probably appreciate a whole lot more.

Courtesy is defined as a courteous, respectful, or considerate act or expression. That's exactly what I'm advocating by you look out for other's interests first. You've apparently missed my point. You're criticizing me for calling us to be less selfish? By saying I should show courtesy?
This thread has spiraled out of control.
I was in the same section with Pollack. He was a few rows down so I missed him.
The problem is our culture. It it isn't Buffalo, it isn't the Bills.
Alcohol is celebrated and encouraged. Listen, I've been there and done that. I am not saying don't drink, but it shouldn't be your goal to make an ass out of yourself in public, then try to defend why you did it. That is not how productive members of society act. Period. You can black out and puke on yourself at a game, but you really can't defend that, or blame ten years of Bills football for it. That is a lack of class on your end, or indicative of problems with substance abuse.
I swear at plays I don't stand that and scream at other people or just go on profanity laced rants, but that still doesn't make it right. Every time I yell "Come the !@#$ on!!" or "Not this !@#$ing **** again!" "Throw the !@#$ing ball, what is this ****, you kitty?" I regret it. I need to work on it, but I am amiable to those that surround me.
The way it was put to me when I was kid, by my father, was "It's called courtesy." That was anytime I did anything borderline inconsiderate. It stuck. That's what parents do, they teach their kids things like that. If you are a parent that is an !@#$ fan, you need to justify that you aren't that bad, for what I don't know, so you teach your kid. Good job.
I went to the Titans game last year, and their fans gave me a little ****, I knew I deserved it, as I was in a Lynch jersey, but we laughed and talked football. It was a great experience.
I love the Ralph, but the fans that think they are owed something by the team, and that feel they have a right to act like that are sad. There's a lot of them, but I wouldn't say they are the majority.
I never thought I would be the guy that said use the number of the fan line, but I guess I never thought people would act like that in public. I thought they could separate a real life from the game they watch, but the booze blurs their lines. It probably ruins those same peoples' lives everyday, or close to it. Maybe try the fan line, and let the Nazis come escort them out. I wish the people could control themselves, but to subject kids that kind of crap in poor logic. The kids still have a chance, why let them see that ****? The idiot yelling at a woman in a wheel chair, and making racist comments, and passing out after puking on himself is already !@#$ed.
Rap on, brother. That's it. You have freedom of speech, yes you do, but do you have enough courtesy to realize that doesn't make it right to take away from others' experience so you can exercise your right?
-
Words like freedom & liberty actually mean nothing to you. I'm sure you'll try to deny it, but there was a time that your thoughts would be considered un-American. Now in our country, it's all about me, me, me. This attitude is what is taking our country down. It's not the economy, not taxes ... It's a me first, selfish, perverted view of liberty. Life is much better for everyone if you think of others before you consider your own desires. I still find it hard to believe that you admit that you're like this. I'd be embarrassed to admit something like that.
ATTENTION PARENTS: There is a VERY good chance you hear swears at a football game. If you are THAT worried about hearing swear words then stay the F home. I have a 10 yo and when I pull up to the stadium, I am ready for some cuss wordsm and we always come away with a few more in our vocab thn we left with. I KNOW this going in, and I made the choice to expose my precious angel to the harsh real world of grown ups swearing. REALLY...who do you people think you are? it is a GD football game. GROW UP. Little Johnny hears worse at his catholic school, get over it you puss.
If you are a Miami fan, and choose to show it then you are glutton for punishment, and I hope you like lots of nasty words and all the free beer coming your way. Jerseys dry fast and you wouldnt be covered in beer if you didnt wear yours. If you cant take it, then dont walk around with an orange target on your back. When I go down to Miami I DO wear my Bills jerseys...Annnd..wait for it....I EXPECT TO GET RAZZED (sometimes those big meanys even say the F word!!). I am a big boy and I dont cry and I am no worse off for it. There are NO BIGGER VJ FANS IN THE NFL than Dolphin fans. BOOO HOOO.

Cheap bastard. Didn't you see the free Tim Hortons coffee coupon that you actually can use on Monday for a change?
Everybody's alsways looking for a free lunch lol
oh ... the free lunch is at the Adams Mark Hotel ... because we scored 3 TDs. I got my free lunch ... I just wanted a burrito, too.

Yes...I'm not a huge Fitzpatrick fan...but the guy has more experience and got the most crucial snaps in the backup position over Brohm.
Fitzpatrick sealed his roster spot tonight as well as David Nelson, Reggie Corner, and Ellis Lankster.
That leaves Brohm out of the equation.
Reggie Corner got lucky on a play where he was 5 yards behind his cover ... he didn't do much to help his position. He was beat badly off the line.
-
I have to admit.... I'm not a huge Trent fan but I thought he looked pretty decent in the first half.(that is all I watched) Spiller was staring to scare me a bit but he figured it out. I am optimistic of this season. I think our Bills may show some promise...
"pretty decent", huh? I know you're not a Trent fan, but really? The only reason he didn't have another bomb to Evans this week is that LE didn't go hard off of the ball right from the start. If he didn't dog the first part of his pattern, it was another 70 yard TD. Even that "overthrow" was a beautiful pass ... and that was his worst pass of the night. Two of the other three incompletes were throwaways escaping a sack. Tonight was a very good night for Mr. Edwards.

Con
The only reason Reggie Corner got a pick 6 is because he was 5 yards behind the receiver and Palmer Pt. Deux missed the receiver by that much ... Corner was beaten badly on that play and got lucky. And that made it so the Bills stopped passing the ball, thus eliminating the Free Burrito coupon from Moe's in the GameDay program.

Most popular guy in town on a bad football team is usually the back-up. Sorry Fitz.
It doesn't take a bad football team for the backup QB to be the most popular ... there were times during the glory years that people were calling for Reich to start ... even in the playoffs ... "Kelly's been hurt, Reich has lead us to 3 straight wins, we should keep starting him even though Kelly is healthy again ..."
-
I think it means you are verrrrry high in negative suckitude which would be good i think.
negative exponents essentially make the result closer and closer to zero ...
x-2=1/x2
so ... I believe he's saying that you almost don't suck at all ...
-
Eliminate the mistakes ... cut Corner and relegate Moats to special teams ... those two cost us about 21 points(Corner allowed at least 2 scores on bad plays & missed the pick 6), 250 yards & lots of momentum all by themselves. Out of position and lunging at air all over the place ...

So, as a Christian, CJ would temper his feelings and comments to match the context in which he finds himself? Gee, that must make for interesting shifting points of view. God forbid [no pun intended] one should simply be a Christian and speak one's mind in every situation. I hope your comment isn't representative of Christian beliefs.
Speaking as a pastor ... Let's say ... I do not want to move to 'Nebraska' (for example), and I am free to say that I don't want to go there. If my denomination moved me there (as an assignment, out of my control) ... it would be rude to tell the parishioners there that I really didn't want to be there, so I would be quiet and be a good servant.
That being said ... expectations for a pastor & a football player are slightly different.

Buffalo hasn't developed a QB since 1986 (Jim Kelly). Todd Collins was quickly shown the door, Losman & Edwards have both been badly mismanaged, so let's see what Gailey can do with Edwards. If Edwards gets the nod as starter and can't get it done this year, then he'll be out of here at the end of the season.
I don't think the Bills really developed Kelly ... he arrived quite polished already. Did he improve in Buffalo? Yes ... but we didn't get him from being a college QB to a pro QB.
-
If we want to be picky about it ... Kelly had about 54 games in the USFL to season his pro game & make the transition from college ... that probably didn't hurt his entry in the NFL.
-
watching that highlight reel again ... Spiller makes the field look so much bigger b/c of the separation he got on almost every one of those plays. It looks like PeeWee football because there is so much room ...
I can't wait to see him for real in the NFL.

When's the last time Brett Favre went to mini-camp?
When's the last time Favre had made his decision whether or not to play this early in the offseason? He's kept his team in the dark regarding his playing every year since about '01

no one trades a reigning league MVP unless there's a problem ... that happened to Flutie ... TWICE ... once was midseason IIRC in a MVP season. He was a problem everywhere he went ... except in NE (the second time) because he was a novelty with his dropkick.
-
Man i just watched a Bills classic video on Rumblings & i don't care who you are or what you say Flutie was not only a winner with more heart than most but he was a Stud when it came to Q.B.
you forgot to put the "PI" in the middle of your description
-
I have no doubt he'll make some highlight video plays in his career. And I'll love every one of them.
But you can't convince me that he was the right pick at 9.
Put it another way. If, before the draft, you were told that we could have Chris Johnson (who everyone wants to compair spiller to) for our first round pick, knowing that Marshawn and Jackson would not be moved for picks during the draft, how many people would have been on board with that?
Not many. And he's proven what he can do on the field already.
I'll go on record saying that if Tennessee called and offered us Chris Johnson for our #1 ... I would take it in a heartbeat. Move Lynch now or later or never ... doesn't matter. If I was guaranteed to receive a young, highly productive player for a #1, I do it every time.
If we were hoping for a 2nd - 3rd for Lynch ... Johnson is worth at least a #1.
-
Why don't you just watch the video, that way you will know what you are talking about?
I don't need to watch the video to remember that play ... TT didn't throw Flutie under the bus, but let's ask who more likely botched the play:
1. the longtime Bill, running a play he'd been running for nearly a decade?
2. the shortime Bill, who showed everywhere he has ever been that it has to be all about him? There was a reason he was the CFL MVP 5 times, on THREE different teams. Twice his last season with a team was an MVP year. Hmmm ...
Getting really tired of this Pats* cheater stuff.

ESPN timeline of events of "Spygate"
"Mortensen also reports that Belichick has privately told Goodell he has been taping opponents' signals since he became the Pats' head coach in 2000."
then later (5 or so months after the original meeting between Belichick & Goodell) ...
"Asked twice how far back the Patriots began to tape their opponents' signals, Goodell doesn't give a specific answer. There is no mention from Goodell that the practice dated back to 2000."
Would have been a great time to say "Nope, this was an isolated incident based on a misunderstanding or misapplication of the rule" ... but there is no statement to that regard.
