Eager to hear from McDermott today. Hopefully we can get some clarify on the injury front, good or bad. Will Spencer Brown or Terrel Bernard go to IR? Will Kincaid get a practice in? Curtis Samuel?

They need to get Brown on the short term IR and see if maybe PRP could help heal the labrum enough for the playoffs.  My non Doctor (but I could call myself somekind of a cool Dr name on social media) @$$ feels he should get surgery on the labrum the week after we finish the season. Get on that ASAP so he can rehab as fast as possible

Could the addition of Cooks be too little, too late, maybe about four years too late? Yes. That was my immediate reaction, and I doubt I was alone during the past 12 hours. I woke up this morning actively hunting for reasons this could work, trying to drag myself out of the “our front office is operating with a Magic 8-Ball and this roster is a resource-allocation dumpster fire” mindset. Honestly, I’ve been in such an NFL funk I’m barely even pretending to be excited about the rest of the season.

So why not at least attempt to convince ourselves something good could come from this? At least until they inevitably prove they have absolutely no idea how to use him. I’m shoving every memory of Hines and Hardy into the mental junk drawer where I keep stuff I don’t want to talk about.

Here’s today’s episode of “Delusional Positivity I’m Forcing on Myself”:

maybe Brandin Cooks can be this team’s James Lofton.

Yes, I know, the ’80s NFL was a different sport entirely. Just roll with it. We’re in survival mode.

On the surface, by the numbers (before joining the Bills):

James Lofton arrived in Buffalo in 1989 at age 33.

    11,085 yards

    Five 1,000-yard seasons

    54 TDs

And averaging an absurd 18.3 yards per catch

Then in 1991, at 35 (and 36), he had a straight up resurgence: another 1,000-yard season, 8 TDs, a Pro Bowl (back when that actually meant something), and most importantly he helped ignite the Super Bowl run.

Brandin Cooks arrives here at 32.

    9,687 yards

    Six 1,000-yard seasons

    60 TDs

A career 13.3 yards per catch (and yes, we’re all collectively pretending this year’s 8.7 doesn’t exist)

I’m digging deep here. I fully admit I have absolutely no clue who the Andre Reed equivalent is supposed to be, please don’t ask, it’ll collapse the whole house of optimism I’m building. But hey, could he also help propel this team into the big game? Stranger things have happened. Probably. Maybe. Don’t fact-check me.

If you squint hard enough, and I mean squint like you’re trying to read directions on something you're trying to air fry at 46 years of age, there are some parallels. And at this point, a little delusional hope is all we’ve got.

So with that, I give thanks to Brandon Beane for the next 96 hours of optimism. It may be borrowed, delusional, and doomed, but hey, why shouldn’t Bills fans get a little joy before reality smacks us again?  We're rooting for you Brandin!

Let's go...never mind (I don't want this moved to the political section)

    1. No Jim Kelly and the K Gun offense that pushed the ball down the field.

    2. No Andre Reed.

    But Kudos on the positivity!!

    My Guess:

    Palmer

    Shakir

    Cooks

    Davis

    Shavers

Shavers takes a step back and is more WR5/ST’s

Keon, Gameday Inactive, or if they think he’s salvageable, actually try to move him around

    Samuel, IR

    Moore, Cut

Then Moore added to the PS.

As @Kirby Jackson posted in another thread.

You don’t win because of the gap between Dawson Knox and Quentin Morris. You win because of the gap between George Pickens and Elijah Moore (or even Josh Palmer). Maybe that’s a good way of putting it. The Bills would rather have Knox and Palmer than Pickens and Morris. If you give them 4 players they’ll take the 2nd and 3rd best over the 1st and 4th. I just don’t think that’s a championship plan. That’s how Carolina was built too. They were both fortunate to get MVP QBs. You never trade a dollar for 4 quarters. Beane would trade 10 dollars for 40 quarters if offered.

A fuller roster of B to D level talent isn't winning you a Super Bowl.

But they did it in Carolina so they are hell bent to do it here, even though its failing miserably.

And if McConkey was such a great outside WR, you would think LA would line him up there and show he could be the next Diggs. But they don't, I wonder why? Cuz he ain't an outside WR. PERIOD!!!

Bull $##@  but I'm done with you.

Palmer was one of the 5 best WRs in the off-season. I'm sick of people commenting on McConkey because he doesn't give us the outside WR we lack.  60% of his snaps are in the slot in LA. What WR got moved at the trade deadline. Jakobi Meyers wooo another slot WR.

I dont care what the Chargers do with him.  Im sick of fans spewing slot WR when he is the same height, weight as Diggs but faster and played better competition in College.

No he's being a good GM trying to improve his roster based on what's available and at value he willing to take on.

No he put us in this position because of his inability to evaluate WR's AND his damn ego.  We shouldnt' even be here.  Coleman should be McConkey at the minimum and even with out that, he should have addressed WR in the offseason or at the trade deadline.

  8. 3 minutes ago, Kelly to Allen said:

    True

But I also think it's a good sign that beane doesn't care about looking bad, but is doing whatever to get better regardless of ego

That's an extremely valuable character trait in management

Beane needs to go this offseason, that said this is nothing more than him trying to save his own Arse somehow.  Address WR in the damn offseason or go ahead and  trade away our 2026 1st for a good, established WR. God knows Beane is gonna screw up whatever 1st round pick we have this next year, and he sure as hell won't draft a WR worth a damn.

We need to put to rest the combination of the name "Brady" and the phrase "scheme him open." If Cooks doesn't get open in the mesh concept, he can join Palmer, Moore, Coleman, and Shavers. In Brady's scheme, wide receivers come to die.

It frustrates the hell outta me

  10. Am I glad we got him? Yeah, he helps. But as others have said, will Brady actually use him and scheme him open

AND... can he escape the mystery injury that seems to happen to moat new FA's we sign?

Get him and a healthy Hardman and Healthy Kincaid and we MIGHT have something

    52 minutes ago, SCBills said:

Didn’t think they’d get him with the Rams  as the other team involved.

It’s very clearly worth the move and he gives us another potentially competent WR on the outside.

Palmer, Davis, Cooks and Shakir at least gives me some hope if they can gel with JA down the stretch.

Get Hardman healthy and that's another one

No, I’ve seen people right here suggesting/proposing him, which strengthens my point that there is a lot of nonsense here.  There are no slam dunks as options, just some more attractive than others.

I’m not here to defend McD and Beane. I’m as frustrated as the next guy. I just see people wanting to change for the sake of change, and that sounds emotional and immature to me. Even the “good options” are not sure things, but people here like to think the grass is always greener. I’m not tied to any one person or thing on the Bills, so if and when change happens I’ll see how I feel at that time.

I’m not sure what they should do, and I freely admit that. I do know that a lot will depend on how the rest of the season goes, so I’ll just wait and see before forming an opinion. We have rallied from 6-6 in the past, so at least we know it could get exciting.

And that is your prerogative. I fully grant you that. I’m going to live my life my way, and I don’t want to feel dirty over a football team. That’s just not worth it to me personally.

Understand and I respect your opinion.

Gruden or another Rex type of candidate would make me put my fandom on hold. This will be unpopular, but I don’t hate what the Bills are doing as much as some of the fans who just look for things to B^&%* about. While we have some intelligent and informed people here, I don’t think the average Bills fan is half as smart as he thinks he is. Look around.

This may be even more unpopular, but I wouldn’t care if Gruden lucked into another SB ring with any team. I’d rather be without a ring than have him as our coach. I think I just may have different values and sense of what is important than some people here. I won’t sell my soul for them to win a trophy. It’s fine if others want to feel differently, that’s just me. I’m not telling anyone else how to think or feel.

And that is why we dont have championships.  I would rather have a pure a hole as a HC and a Lombardi in the trophy case

What do Bills scouts get paid for? Do they keep coming back to meetings saying “nope, we looked all over and didn’t see anything good, but just wait until the draft — we’ve cherry picked the very best underwhelming set of dlinemen. Just go with our old players til then. Can we go home now?”

I mean this is something well beyond a bad cliche at this point. How can Beane as a grown man look himself in the mirror and not see this as utterly ridiculous?

How do you not know they have beem repeatedly over ruled

No, you're thinking with your feelings. Manning and Elway didn't win until they got a new head coach. Stafford didn't win until he went to the Rams. Those are the two ways Allen can win, because it's not happening with McDermott. That is abundantly clear at this point.

💯.   At some point its got to be realized a change has to be made.

The reason you use mesh is it sets open window reads and they're all really rapid.  So you know - this guy uncovers first, then this guy, then finally that guy - and this guy over here is the hot.

But if none of them uncover in rhythm (because the opponent knows you're running mesh) - they know once you move off read 1, you don't have time to go back to read 1, so i no longer have to cover him, then you end up with these busted plays where no one is open.  There's plenty of ways to beat man coverage beyond mesh or rub routes.

The challenge with the construction of these plays is always going to be proper diagnosis of coverage, identifying when players will uncover, and knowing when you have to get the ball out.  Plus route running will help, but it's more of an issue of timing.  When you run a timing based offense the ball goes to the same place at the same time.   If you're running double moves to shake tight man coverage, that takes more time regardless of how fast you are.

Part of the challenge buffalo is running into on a lot of scramble drills also reflects on the route's they're running.  They run too close together so buying time doesn't create space since there will be multiple defenders in the area of bunched receivers.

End of the day - if they're getting home with 4 THAT consistently, you have to change your approach.

And quit being so damn predictable

Steelers loss to the Bears means they have to win at hime verses the Bills. Which means they will want it more. Which means they will have more energy and be more physical than the Bills who don’t seem to get up for games. Which means the Bills will lose.

They will want it more and we aren't good on the road under McDermott.

Ill guess and say on defense they will jam our WR's at the LOS and blitz. Just guessing though...

  17. 18 minutes ago, Bruffalo said:

That assumes you trust the organization to make changes, or at least make them effectively.

I don't see Beane or McD going anywhere realistically. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we miss the playoffs, end up with a pick in the upper teens, and we take a will linebacker.

    Sadly you are right.
